Alex Rudinger - Job For A Cowboy - "Unfurling A Darkened Gospel"

- In case you can't tell, I've been reliving my youth by periodically covering songs by some of my favorite extreme metal bands from the mid/late 2000's 😂😂😂. So in that spirit, here's a cover that I ALWAYS wanted to do - "Unfurling A Darkened Gospel" from 'Ruination' (2009), by Job For A Cowboy.
Always loved Jon Rice's playing on this album. Super tasty ideas (especially for Extreme Metal stuff!). Not to mention - the overall drum production RULES. It's modern, while still retaining an organic feel & sound. Definitely one of my favorite albums that Jason Suecof produced. So big shoutout to both of them for being SICK.
Lol, one time I was in the UK doing some Good Tiger shows & I saw a dude on the street that looked like Jon Rice. Turns out it was, so I invited him to come to our show that night (which he did). That's pretty much the whole story, but I always thought it was funny 😂. Small world!
Additional big shoutout to the ultimate homie from my Patreon who was able to provide me with album stems for a proper mix! As I've mentioned in the past, I pretty much never do covers unless I have mix stems. So if it weren't for him, this video wouldn't exist! You rule DOODE! & just to be safe, I did also text Jonny Davy to make sure it was cool if I used em' / did a cover. LOL. Feels weird to use album mix stems without asking. So thanks to him, TOO !!! Buncha sick fuggin' guys up in here.
& speaking of SICK guys / mixes, shoutout to Declan White for the mix here! Declan's been mixing all of my recent videos, & it RULES! Especially love his work on this one - there's a LOT of natural kick mic blended in with the sample from my 2Box, & you can actually hear dynamics throughout. Love that kinda thing for this style of drumming. Aside from the kick (which is a blend), everything else is natural / un-sampled (just heavily processed, obviously)!
At any rate, if you're looking for some QUALITY mix work, contact Declan via his website (!) -
www.declanwhite...
& as I mentioned in my last video, Declan also makes SICK snare drums! Using one of his snares here - Cusworth 14x7 3mm Cast Bronze w/ matching Cast Bronze hoops! Check em' out using the links below!

As always when using a boutique snare, outta respect to Tama I just gotta add this disclaimer: I do not officially endorse Cusworth - I am very much a PROUD #Tama Artist! I'm just also a nerd that loves trying stuff & has an addiction to purchasing snare drums 😂.

Glad someone has an HD playthrough of this on RUclips!
It’s HD currently, but every year from now, it’ll go down a grade of quality and yet remain the same.
You’re the goat 🐐
Hahah the legend himself!!!
Haha. I was wondering if Charn would comment on this. So sick.
Been watching yours for years waiting for an HD quality one and finally!!!
Having watched the Jon Rice studio video probably 1000 times this past decade, I feel qualified to say this cover RIPS
Charn has some big shoes to fill too
I can back this. I swear I amounted for half that videos views. This was the best cover yet. And I took years for that to happen. Also Alex’s Tom tone is so sick.
SAME
Man joins Whitechapel and still has time for covers? What a legend.
They still have lots of time until their show in December.
Their tour begins in February.
So then, what you think of David Diepold, playing for Obscura and Cognizance at the same time?
I think it’s safe to say: All this man does is drum and drink milk….and he’s all out of milk…
@@JGC1
Cognizance doesn’t tour.
its content for endorsement rules i guess
sick cover. Jon "charn" Rices writing style for this album though was unmatched. goat in my books
Also seeing Alex fucking rudinger play this and in some spots having to catch up shows how much a fucking beast charn is. No sleight to rudinger. Obviously. Goes without saying. Third time watching this cover already.
This is easily my favorite JFAC album, and Charn's drumming on it is just insane. What he chose to play had such a huge impact in terms of making a bunch of death metal riffs sound like more memorable parts. I still go back every now and then and watch that potatoe quality play through of this song he has up.
Nothing comes close to Sun Eater for me! (Albeit this album was phenomenal also)
Absolutely mind blowing!
the intro to March to Global Enslavement is on some Mars Volta shit
The drums are memorable from this album.
One of the very first videos that GOT ME INTO DRUMS was Jon Rice's playthrough of this song! I can't express my nostalgia
Dude same!
Funny how common this is haha
Ruination and Sun Eater are my favorite death metal albums of the last 20 years.
I listen to sun eater straight thru how it was written, masterpiece
Jon Rice.. Definitely one of the most underrated drummers. Now you're playing at my level
underrated by whom?
@@ism0477 everyone that doesnt know JFAC
Underrated? Lol well us musicians in the community definitely don't think that in the slightest..
“underrated” is not the same thing as unknown or less known!
no death metal fan that sees his video will think that he's underrated because it's obvious that he's top tier. If anything,
he is highly rated. By those who know him. of whom there are not many.
@@ism0477 I'd argue that he's still considered underrated, as is the band as a whole, because many in the death metal community _still_ to this day look down upon the band for their deathcore EP. They get written off by so many people without them even hearing them, and when they do listen, they still get unfairly treated (from firsthand experience of showing people how they progressed). They were never able to shake off that labeling, and that's what can often lead to them all being underrated, even as individuals.
My favourite drum track. Charn obviously owns this in my eyes but still incredible to watch anyone playing this song
Jon Rice is such an incredible drummer. This is the playthrough i needed to see. Amazing job
Craziest Alex alive. Continue covering our extreme metal bands of the 2000's bro... I feel you
A master playing a masterpiece.
This man blasts are SO tight, look at those stick heights! Unbelievable
This song forever is endless fckn fire!!🔥 and Charns drumming, unbelievable! Rüdy of course nailed it! Could watch this on loop for hours easily! Well, might be doing this exactly now haha
Love this Record!
Amazing amaaaaazing job as always
That snare... I don't think I've ever heard a more pleasing sound.
I love the anti trigger direction your playing is heading LOL. It just sounds soo much more natural, great job man.
Dude jon rice is such an underappeciated drummer, the entirety of demonocracy is a testament to that in my eyes, this albums too. To just be able to keep up with his stuff makes you extremely talented
WHO AND HOW!!!!! MY JAW HASNT BEEEN STRETCHED THIS LOW EVERRR!!!!
The Charn feels completely satisfy by this cover.
Is there anything he can't completely destroy? Love to see some Psycroptic!!
Fuck yeah like skin coffin
Extreme metal has evolved so much in so little time. ESPECIALLY in the area of percussion. We have a healthy community and this pleases me greatly. Thank you all!
Your past 3 uploads have all been some of my favourite songs and I just wanna say thank you so much
Unbelievably sick as always, Alex! The original drum video of this song (studio footage of Jon) is one of my earlier drumming memories, and a great one at that! Congratz on 100k Subs aswell, couldn't come soon enough!!!
Finally! We can watch it being played (properly) in more than one pixel!
This is the best drum sound I've heard out of any of your videos, by a country mile. That bronze snare is sounding pretty great, too
This album was about 10-15 years ahead of it's time, if you ask me. The second after popping this album into my CD player and hearing the first drum riff, I immediately got the stank face!
30 years back when I started listening to metal, I would have said this is so cool. Now I would only say Excellent Amazement!
You snare sound is freaking aweeeesoome. Perfect Snap. I'd KILL for that in an SD3 Pack
Awesome cover as always! But imagine to be Jon Rice and to create this drum parts damn!!
That Cusworth just slays so hard ! 🔥
Amazing playing as usual, Alex !
I've watched the vid of Charn playing this like 100 times.. now Alex busts this shit out. I love it. Love this channel. Love your work on Kin as well. Keep on crushing it brother
Damn this album is fucking amazing. Love that you covered this song. Straight classic.
Man I love your diversity Alex, you are a dedicated and talented musician, and your play-throughs kick ass \m/
one of my favorite drummers covering one of my favorite songs. wowee.
Another great exemple of Alex left/right hands fluidity. Simple amazing. When ur born to be a drummer.
What's amazing about Alex is how quickly he learns these songs and how proficient he is in playing them.
3:07 - 3:17
Ah finally, a section I'd be able to play!
man jon rice would be proud. haha this is sick man. do more jfac covers!!
I never cease to be in awe of your playing, Alex. Incredible! 🤘
Damn dude your kit sound extra sick lately. I've been playing for like 25+ years probably at this point and I wish I could afford such gear.
This was unbelievable. Awesome work Rüdi! Also, I still enjoy reading the description box. It warms my entrails like a nice dessert after a nice meal 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Awesome cover dude! I remember watching Jon Rice's cover of this song when I was 9 years old and was amazed LOL. I have not been on RUclips much since I joined the Army and once I saw that you did a cover of this song I Immedietly had to watch! Blast beats lookin smooth as butta! Hope to see you on the road with whitechappel soon!
One of my favourite drum compositions and rudi kills it 🤟🏻
Damn dude idk how I missed this one!! Great job 👍👍 This album is insane
Sssshhhhiiiitttttt
I remember seeing these guys local here in Phx. AZ opening up for all the death metal bands in the mid 2000s. They used to play the Metal Devastation festivals back in the day too. I didn't realize how good we had it here in Phx regarding metal but after 2 and a half decades of shows it was a great place to be a metal fan.
I just started diving back into JFAC's albums yesterday! 🤘
This was Sick!!! I've been waiting for you to drop a song from JFAC. I'd love to see you cover The Black Dahlia Murder. Any song off of any album.
Malenchantments of the necrosphere 🤘🏻
please, some black dahlie murder alex
@@UrethralCarnage yoooooooo that would be insane
Now he actually did it and it’s insane!
One of my favorite songs.. this was definitely a sing along .. you fucking crushed this ..
The best song for Job For a Cowboy! Congrats dude!
Dude, you are so damn ripping! That was so good! Also sound of the kit and the snare is insane! Thank you!!
Jon Rice is literally my favorite drummer. Worked nonstop with an impressive resume of bands after JFAC and his current band Uncle Acid is one of my favorite bands as well. Got to see his first performance with them at Desert Daze 2018 the footage of the show is on RUclips its quite the spectacle.
Absolute insanity. And congrats on 100k subscribers!
My first time hearing job for a cowboy. I cant even play drums i just love watching this man play
Rudi is so perfectionist that when he double bass, he leans forward so listen to his kick 🤣
Simply a beast 💪
Badass. You are unbelievable Alex. I hope every day for any blotted science cover. Woulld be a dream come true. Or a Spatik Ink cover. CONGRATS Dr Drums!! Your a beast. Naield that sh#t really hard.
Impressive Padawan, you are now the master! About sithed my pants.....lol
No triggers?! Absolutely mad. Beautiful cover
Woah! Blast from the past! I LOVE this song and i totally forgot.
Always amazing from you Alex. Nice one on reaching 100k subs well deserved mate
Liked the video before it even started because A) You're a beast and B) This song is amazing.
I just used this vid as a backing track and I must say, your playing was on point as always.
Took me 4 minutes and 7 seconds to realise I didn't breath, just too sick bro 👍🏼
Amazing! The best Drummer! Congratulatios from México City!!!
The natural bass drum sound is fuckin bad ass bruv!
U have a great sounding drums and u hit everything at the right volume....do more videos!
My favorite Job album. Wonderful as always, sir!
You are the man! What a drumming! 💪👍
Your drums sound amazing. Otherworldly playing as well
That snare sounds incredible 👍👍
Hell yeah! I could watch this all day!
holy shit! man you have incredible stamina throughout this too. wild
Perfect as always. You are insane brother.
I’ve been listening to this album so much recently, never clicked on a video so fast in my life
Just spot welded my jocks! Perfection.
He's ridiculously good.. so clean
I really love the Jon Rice video of this. Looks like he beats the shit out of the drums. Comparing stick height and stuf... this one also shreds.
He leans into those drums daring them to do the wrong thing… my man this is absolutely killer!!!
Long live the thirst and drive to elevate beyond other worldly...!!
I'd be surprised if the OG wasn't one of the most watched vids on youtube
I believe this was the album that took JFAC off the deathcore map & right onto the tech death map. Such a good album. This & Bearing the Serpent's Lamb are insane tracks.
They've never fully been off the deathcore map, sadly, in the sense that there are still many death metal fans who write their music off as shit because of who it is, calling them deathcore posers or whatever, even if they were enjoying the song before they knew who it was.
JFAC will never be rated appropriately, and that's probably why we haven't had more music in 8 years, despite Sun Eater being frankly phenomenal.
@@metalswifty23
Metal is filled to the brim with elitist dickheads. It's something that's almost exclusive to metal & core music communities. It's dumb. I was one when I used to play & listen to heavy music. Innovation was (& still is, I assume) nonexistent & the genre grew stale. I still listen to breakdown bands like Traitors when I need some energy or to shake the neighbors' subflooring.
@@metalswifty23so what do ya think of the new tune? An absolute return to form imo
Another hella good performance sir. Always a pleasure watching someone master their craft lol.
your snare is satisfying, great cover man i enjoyed it
Absolutely amazing 👏
I’d love to see a Slaughter to Prevail cover with those natty drum feels 🔥
That snare!! Awesome sound engineerin/mix too.
F-SOCIETY !!!! nice tee shirt , from "mr robot ? "
and amazing job :)
Ohhhhhh my god that snare. I was going strong on NNN but now...
Bruh. This is prolly my favorite Job For A Cowboy song, so I sorta have high expectations regarding covers. Alex, my guy, you fucking KILLED IT.
Was waiting for a proper modern cover of this track for a long time. Fucking wicked, dude! You're such a phenomenal drummer.
Alex you beast. This was perfect!
one of my favorite albums!
saw u play live with conquering dystopia, knew u were a legend ever since
100 out of 10
*Beyond flawless victory*
Who the hell gives this a thumbs down? Holy shit!!! Badass!!! Love all your work!
That snare is otherworldly
This man always do the job more than a cowboy.
Holy shit! If I ever am able to play this then it will be the pinnacle of my own drum journey. Congrats! you nailed it!
I’d love for you to do one of the songs from Sun Eater! Navene Koperweis was great on that album. I love you production and quality, audio and camera angles.
