I'm a native and have lived here for all 52 years of my life. I have very low expectations for these kinds of videos. But I am SUPER impressed that this guy mentioned Charlie Barnett and Edward Hopper - those are things that most people do not know about the park.

Washington square park is one of my fave parks ..I’m a little bit disturbed to find out about the dead bodies ...Little tidbit for you ..Jane Fonda and Robert Redford made a movie called barefoot in the park(referring of course to Washington square park)..enjoyable and disturbing in its own right . I can see Tom as a younger Kunstler. I forgot his protege's name, but both presented the working class and those in need because of being side tracked by society. He should have his own law firm and find the best lawyers who thinks the working class should be represented. I love is tours and will miss them if he decided to move on, but he is brilliant and I think this touring is just a breather to get his destiny in tow.

I'm disappointed you didn't mention that Henry James, the novelist, also lived on that row and even wrote a short novel called "Washington Square", filmed as "The Heiress" with. I think, Olivia Dehavilland, Montgomery Clift, and Ralph Richardson in the late forties, if memory serves. Love your videos, by the way.

Hi Tom. I didn't know Albert Gallatin had anything to do with NYU. He is buried in Trinity Churchyard. He was an immigrant from Switzerland who settled in Western Pennsylvania at a place called New Geneva. He was one of the leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion. He was also Secretary of the Treasury and U.S. Ambassador to France. He was a Democratic-Republican, the origin of the Democratic Party. He died in 1849,

New York looks cool, I like old buildings. Do you ever go to the scary parts of New York? I read Patti Smith's book "Just Kids" It was excellent, have you ever thought about putting that in one of your tours? All the places she talked about were so cool, The Chelsea Hotel, Max's Kansas city club, CBGB,S, Coney Island, the places where her and Robert stayed. That would give you some street creds!
All those places are long gone.

Supposedly, Bob Dylan is smiling out the window, and in that square, their "breath comes out white clouds, mingles, and hangs in the air". Ring a bell? You offer us Washington's slaves, Bohemian insurrection, but no diamonds, no rust? I feel like I've already paid.
for many years i lived 3 blocks away on 9 street and Broadway this park is a great freek show in the summer

Tom - here is a book recommendation “never caught” about Martha fav slave Oney. When he made Philadelphia his home during time he was president there was a law in place within 6 months Slaves were to be given their free papers. One day Oney was complaining at age 22 and was asked If she had her free papers - she had no concept of “free papers” when asked if she had ever left Philadelphia- she replied “oh yes Mr Washington sends us back to the plantation every 5 months” !!!! Records show he enforced others followed law provided slaves with free papers within 6 months

Hey Tom just started watching your channel while I cook for my son. Will you be doing any video in the Bronx. The Bx Little Italy was cool but there is more.
Used to be a great place to score drugs back in the 90s. Lots of skaters there at the time before they moved to Union Sq and so did the drugs. Goodtimes
Some of Tom's facts are anything but true. For one there was a history of executions in the park the park. Thou there is a story that there were but two hangings in 1820. One being a Rose Butler who was accused of arson along with slaves. The reel cause being poorly maintained wooden chimneys in lower Manhattan's older structures. In 1643 the Dutch drove the Native inhabitants out of this narrow marshy valley that was known as Tobacco Field. Thru it ran the Minet stream which started in what is now Union Square park as a spring. The story goes that the generous Dutch occupier's gave the land to some of their slaves on condition of a percentage of their crop every year and their first born children. Later it was a potters field where in they believe over 20K are still interred in the park. Recently when infrastructure was being performed on the east side a vaulted tomb was exposed. So they were not all poor people interred there. When N.Y.U. first started construction they asked New York to supply prisoners to do the stone work where upon the mostly Italian immigrants living just south of the park vehemently protested causing the militia to be called out to occupy the park for several days. This was the first labor demonstration in the country. Some of the alumni are : Winslow Homer, Walt Whitman and Samuel Colt. Mark Twain who in the 1880's lived on 11th St. would frequent the park. The fountain was originally in Central Park and moved here after the Civil War. The park gained notoriety for the folk singing that went on mostly on weekends. Then in 1961 the city banned all music in the park excepting the classical concerts that were held in the fall months. The claim being that the residents west of the park were being disturbed by the noise. I believe it was because people of color were attracted by and joining in the music. We demonstrated where upon the police came down on us with their billy clubs. But, we persisted and to this day there is music and every summer a Krishna festival. On January 26 1917 during the Armory show of European art Marcel Duchamp a guest of some Village artists broke into the arch. After a party in the room above the arch they proceeded the roof shot off cap guns and declared "the republic of Greenwich Village". In the early '60's an x heavy weight fighter Big Bill Brown a.k.a. King Brown would sit astride the fountain with nothing but tight Bermuda shorts and 6'2" of black muscles reciting his street poetry, "My habit got long and my money got short". Other characters then were: Danny Fitzgerald who would later move to France and over the next half century busk all over Europe with his "Lost and Wandering Blues and Jazz" ensemble, while strumming on his washtub bass. In the Spring and Summer at sun rise with the park empty and the sparrows singing is, well you just have to experience it for your self. P.S., the statue of Washington, the statesman was posed for by Mr. Universe (those big caves) and sculpted by Alexander Calder the Father a son of the same name who created of the mobile.
