The Martian is one of my favorite books!! I loved the diary format and that he had to use his wits and some science to try and survive. I haven't pulled for a character as much as I did for Mark since reading it! Yay science fiction. I'm happy you made this video!
Leviathan Wakes and the rest of that series is one of my favorite Sci fi series. I also really like the classic Sci fi stories like 1984 and Brave new World.

I’m reading Children of Time right now and it’s fantastic. In short, a nano-virus is sent to a new planet with primates, with the intention of speeding up evolution from primate to Homo Sapien, and it ends up infecting an entirely different species. The story is two sided- from the perspective of humans going to this planet and the perspective of the species that now possess human intelligence and can contemplate its own existence. HIGHLY recommend it!!

Ooh, Children of Time was great, I dropped reading it for some reason though, it drags on a lot at the end.

From what you've recommended, you MUST read John Scalzi. He is such a great sci-fi writer, and his books are hilarious! My personal favorites are Redshirts and Lock In. And thanks for the new recs!

    Hey G!
thanks for all your recommendations! In your July Book Release Video you mentioned A long way to a small angry planet and I read the first chapter on Amazon. I bought it directly and finished it yesterday! I absolutely agree with you. The writing style and all the characters are brilliant! When I hadn't finished the first book, I already bought the second part and started it first day this morning =) Thanks a lot for your good recommendations!

I love sci-fi so much, so I understand yours passion and enthusiasm. My number one sci-fi series is The Expanse, I really really recommend these books (7 in total, I read only four so far), they're gorgeous, they are my holy grail, so you should try them. I love them so much and not so many people know about them and it makes me sad sometimes because the book one Leviathan Wakes blow me away. Did I write that I love that series?

If you enjoy the movie and the books of Hitchhiker's Guide, I highly recommend searching out the radio show if you haven't heard it. It's the original form, and it's a great way to experience the story. There's pretty much a Book entry in each episode.

  • @GBunnyG

I was trying to guess what book you were about to say by the little descriptions ahead of time. I knew Dark Matter's intro immediately. 😍
I have always been so picky about sci-fi, it's one of the genres where I don't trust recommended books unless the person has proven themselves. 😂 But I will say, you haven't steered me wrong on a sci-fi rec yet. I mean, Long Way to a Small Angry Planet? My babies?!?!
And The Martian is on my Newts TBR. I'm very excited.

I discovered that the way the story is written in The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy doesn't work for me when written, but the original radio play was amazing. I didn't enjoy the fifth book much, but 1-4 were a lot of fun

  • @fadingtwilight7682

Well you made me want to read them all haha. I am currently reading The long way to a small angry planet, though, and really liking it! It's slow but never feels slow, if you know what I mean.
The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is one of my all time favorites. I might pick up Sleeping giants next!
Also, I don't know if you have already done this, but I'd love to see your list of fantasy recommendations!

The Themis Files are spectacular, I'm currently reading Waking Gods on audio, I don't mind the young girl voice performed by an adult like you mentioned put you off, so far so good. I have the physical copy and the audiobook of Illuminae but haven't started it yet. Same with The Martian and A Long Way, I own them but haven't read them yet. Wow I need to catch up. Dark Matter sounds like something I will enjoy, but my owned tbr simply cannot grow any more at the moment.
For anyone interested in middle-grade sci-fi, I would recommend The Zanna Function by Daniel Wheatley. I also quite enjoyed Replica by Lauren Oliver, for YA fans.

And If u haven't already read them i recommend Asimov's foundation series and Baxter and Pratchett's the long earth series (and while on Pratchett - although its not sci-fi all discworld books are worth reading)
btw this video made me subscribe.

My favourite Sci-Fi last year was the third book of the Imperial Radch (Ancillary Mercy) by Ann Leckie. The series is absolutely great, it ends in such a perfect way that I get the urge to reread it when I talk about it. The first book does take a bit of getting used to (the narrator is non human and jumps between two timelines), but the pay off is amazing.
I had never heard of We are Legion We are Bob, but I'm intrigued!

I love Hitchhiker's. It is however hard to read for sci-fi newbies because Adams jumps around a little bit.
I fail to see how you find "The Martian" funny. Yes, there are funny moments but most of it is a see-spot-run look at the reality of a man stuck on Mars. That said though if you want true "Hard" sci-fi then "The Martian" is definitely for you.

G... I just literally put every single book you mentioned that wasn't already on my tbr... on my tbr on goodreads!!! Haha XD Because I really need more sci-fi in my life, especially in my bookshelf. These past few years I fell in love with the sci-fi genre but I more focused on movies than books so I don't know many books in that genre and I definitely want to change that. I'm still forever grateful for your recommendation for "The long way to a small angry planet" because especially for a character driven reader like me such books are just perfect! It's my favourite book atm and I'm already looking forward to read Becky Chambers' other books, even if I'm really kind of sad that there won't be all those lovely characters any more :( I love that crew so so much!
Thank you so so much for this awesome video and have an awesome day!

Love science-fiction? I have just read a new novel from a
new writer called Mark Hall. The book is called The Epsilon Syndrome. It's a
sci-fi thriller that’s a mash-up of Minority Report and Altered Carbon. It is
set in the future, where the FBI utilise DNA so their agents can alter their appearance
to look like crime-lords, allowing them to go undercover easier and break the
criminal syndicates from the inside. It's fast-paced, packed with conspiracy, with
fabulous dialogue, futuristic scenes, with geeky well-thought out technology
and has a wicked twist at the end. I recommend it and you can check out more on
    Facebook @EpsilonSyndrome

I don't really understand why 'Dark Matter' is so highly thought of. It's a good romp, and a pacey read; but the characters make some really daft decisions just to ginger up the plot, and there are so many far-fetched plot devices that it became too implausible for me to fully engage with. Good escapist fare, but nothing more than that as far as I could see.

    any non-American authors?

    • @BookRoast
      @BookRoast  5 лет назад +1

Heya! Actually most of these books are not written by American authors. Illiuminae is written by Australian authors, Sleeping Giants is by a Canadian, Hitchhikers guide series was written by a British author, same as Will Save the Galaxy for food. Bobiverse series is also written by a Canadian author.
I myself am Lithuanian and live in Scotland ✨ Hope that clarifies it a bit
