I love that you're planning to read more science fiction next year. My personal SFF tastes usually leaned more to scifi, but most of booktube leans towards fantasy. I am obsessed with the Expanse series so I really hope you enjoy it!
Been meaning to get to Red Rising and Scythe for ages. Very close to the top of my sci fi list. I enjoyed 'The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet' its nice. I know that sounds quite meek but spending time with that team feels nice and cosy ha.
Yeah, same! They have all been getting bumped down my TBR and I want to try them because I accumulated all of these sci-fi reads! I just have to make time for them in my TBR.
OMG you have listed so many of my favourite books here, plus I discovered a few new reads to add to my TBR as well! I absolutely adore the Red Rising series, Scythe and the Themis Files as well. Evelyn Hardcastle was so good omg!
Haha!!! I always read your reviews on Goodreads for books and we have so many of the same ones we want to check out!! I'm very excited for all of these!
Yassss, Red Rising! Highly highly recommend the audio books! The narrator has an Irish accent & does the best voices. I'm listening to the 2nd book now & I'm obsessed! 💖
I adored the Red Rising trilogy when I listened to the audiobooks at the start of this year! Iron Gold let me down a bit, I hope the next book in July brings my interest back up. But anyway! The trilogy was really fast paced and emotional and I hope you end up loving them too. 🙌🏻
Regarding John Scalzi, I discovered him with Redshirts a few years ago as I was skimming through Hugo award winners, and I loved it, it's very funny and meta even if I'm not that familiar with Star Trek. Then I read Lock in and I liked the mix of sci fi and police investigation, and I've been looking for similar stuff since then. I would say that since then it's my favourite sub-genre of sci-fi (investigation / police procedural). Earlier this year I bought the Old man's war books (took me until a few weeks ago to find The ghost brigades though, as I don't really buy online) and I was completely captivated. The "one book a day during my holiday" sort of captivated. I preferred the 4 first books as numbers 5 and 6 are more collections of short stories, although there is some continuity to it, but overall it's a pretty solid military sci fi series. And now The collapsing empire and its sequel are on my TBR list but I've fallen for The expanse in the meantime so it'll have to wait a little bit. Overall I'd say John Scalzi is one of my favourite sci-fi authors, and I would definitely say he's one of the most accessible ones out there at the moment, especially as a non native English speaker myself. Hope that helps and as this video was a while ago I hope reading The collapsing empire was a nice experience for you!
This is such a great list! Red Rising, Leviathan Wakes, Alex White, Becky Chambers- all good stuff. I would also suggest to try to find Sleeping Giants on audio from your library while you read it - the cast recording is great. I’ll be eager to see what you think!
I'm really interested to hear what you think of Red Rising. I disliked a lot of the tropes it used and I thought the plot was tenuous but really I could not stand the writing. But I know it's a widely love series so I'm looking forward to hearing your experience. I heard about Big Ship from Jes's channel too! I really liked the characters and I'm hoping to get to the second book in 2019. I've been wanting to expand my sci-fi horizons too. So many of these are also on my TBR like The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, Scythe, and Sleeping Giants!
Red Rising is a good gateway from Fantasy to Sci-Fi. That first book really reads like a fantasy, I think that is a great place for you to start. A Long Way To a Small Angry Planet is a really good character driven light Sci-Fi book. I really enjoyed Leviathan Wakes, and also the second book Caliban's War, I'm on the third book of that series. Loved The Collapsing Empire, John Scalzi is one of my favorite authors. You could start with The Collapsing Empire or Old Man's War, they are both great space operas and Scalzi has a humor to his writing that makes it very approachable. Redshirts is another great one of his. I've been meaning to get to The Three-Body Problem too, I have the whole trilogy. I read The Power earlier this year and really liked it. I really want to read Evelyn Hardcastle! Some great books on your list, look forward to hearing how you get on with them.
Yes!! Thank you!! That gives me hope because I want to build to some of those harder sci-fi picks (like The Three Body Problem!). Thanks for the suggestion on the reading order!
@@WhatCassRead ha...yeah...that 2nd job...I had that job for like 2 weeks...in the end, I wasn't getting any more hours with just first job so it wasn't worth it. It's just been a really slumpy year, I've been socializing with friends more, playing more video games and playing a lot of D&D. I've only managed to read 14 books. A lot of them were actually re-reads...and 4 of which I really wish I didn't bother with.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a great comedic sci-fy. Another one I enjoyed was a techno thriller from Michael Crichton called the Lost World. It’s the sequel to Jurassic Park. I thoroughly enjoyed both, but Lost World is what made me pick up more books from him.
I really want to start reading more Sci-Fi also. I didn't enjoy Red Rising as much as I wanted to. Long Way to A Small Angry Planet is on my January TBR. Now I'm excited to read Leviathan Wakes. Can't wait to hear your opinions of them!
I was also nervous about reading The Three Body Problem, as I'm not a huge hard-sci fi reader. However, I thought it was completely understandable and I enjoyed it! I did have to skim over some stuff about theoretical physics I knew I wasn't going to understand, but that did not diminish my enjoyment of the story overall or my understanding of the plot as a whole.
Scythe is so good! I can't wait for book 3. Also, I am going to get back into The Expanse series again after catching up with that TV show! I don't recall the space martial arts from that book that you mentioned but it is definitely not about space martial arts 😂 I remember reading an article about how the physics of space living and travel is pretty accurate in that series which is a must for me in Sci Fi! I also want to read a lot of these on your list 😂😁 I am also looking at reading Planetfall, Altered Carbon, and a bunch of YA Sci fi I've been hoarding 😁
I’m really interested to see what you think of Red Rising. So many people really love it, but I really struggled with it. I always value your opinions on things, so I’m excited for you to get to that one.
Thank you! That might be one of the ones I pick up soon since people have been telling me that as a fantasy reader it's easier to wrap my head around than some of the hard sci-fi! I'll keep you posted!!

I read the Expanse series several months ago, and really enjoyed the Martian Roberta Draper and the Earth Amos Burton characters. James S A Corey does a wonderful job developing their back stories.

Looks like a good list even if I personally don't even own most of those books. Just finished The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet myself and yeah it's a very character driven story that doesn't throw difficult concepts at you left and right so it definitely could be a good place to start. For recommendations outside of what you've got here for sci fi I always have to recommend some books published by Angry Robot. Hunger Makes The Wolf by Alex Wells which is a mix of space biker gang antics, fighting against the corporate overlords, and magic is probably the best book put out by them I've read and I don't remember it being super dense either. I also recently finished Necrotech by K. C. Alexander, another Angry Robot book, which is sort of a cyberpunk post apocalypse kind of thing where the main character has memory loss and that one in particular is way too in your face action packed to be mind numbing.
