  • I just got a Quarz 1x8 S-2 (кAврц 1x8C-2) Super 8 camera made in the USSR in the 1980's, and this is the footage from my first roll of film that I used to test the camera and just get a feel for how it all works.
    I've never worked with any sort of film before so this was really fun! The footage is pretty random because I wanted to try using the different settings in different situations. I'll try to make more artistic shots in the future, but this was really more to get a technical understanding of it all.
    The film was Kodak Vision3 Color Negative Film, Super 8 500T/7219.
    Everything was shot at 18fps.
    I purchased this camera from / k3super16
    Thank you Max!
    The footage you see was processed, scanned, and graded by Metropolis Post in New York City.

    Great job on this test. I get so sick of people shooting only dogs and cats on these film tests.

    Wonderful example to really push it all the way to the lowest light situation possible. It's great for an non-XL glass. Even for 500 ISO it is still surprisingly soft grain. And the Lens of these russian Windup Super8 cameras can really compete with the top-line Canons like the 1014XL. The great thing is the Quarz even has C-mount and if you unscrew the Zoom lens and remove the lens worked into the mount (this is a fixed focus lens that works even without the zoomlens attached to it) you can use any C-Mount lens on it.

    Thanks for sharing your night test. The least you can do is to turn the focus to infinity when shooting outdoors or always check your focus in the tele position and THEN shoot at your desired framing except you aim at out of focus effects.

    I'm completely surprised by the lack of grain! Looks incredible and clean! I just recently shot a couple cartridges of 500T which I exposed manually with a light meter, and it turned out very grainy. Did you do any sort of de-grain/noise in post?

    Fantastic footage! Very tight grain for 500ISO. Who is the pianist? Gorgeous solo jazz piano! Merry Christmas and a good 2023!

    I just got one of these in the mail today from the same guy. Do you know how the light meter works? Does the needle sim towards the corresponding f stop that you should set the camera to?

    Hi! Thanks for sharing! Did you try to use an internal auto-setting of exposition?

    • @johnwalbolt
      @johnwalbolt  3 года назад +3

      I used manual for everything. My light meter showed me that I needed an F stop around 1.8 to 1.6 most of the time, which is about as far as this camera goes.
      Around the 2 minute mark I started playing around with it more. At 2:18 you are basically watching me turn the f stop all the way down to 18, and then slowly open it up to the max of 1.8. All the lights are off except for an led panel blasting light at the headrest of a chair.
      I will test out automatic soon now that I have the correct batteries, and then eventually I'll likely make a video talking about what I learned from super 8 so far.

    Hello! Love your video!
    May I ask a question please?
    For night time, outdoor setting with Edison lightbulbs strings (36watt total) overhead, is 500T film the only way to go?
    Would 50D work at all? I brought a roll of 50D and wasn't expecting to have to shoot at night time.
    I should be able to add more light source - would that help at all?
    Thank you!!

    • @eye_f64
      @eye_f64 Год назад +1

      definitely, if light is limited. 50D or Ecktachrome if you have alot of light.

    Hello!
    I somewhat recently got one of these cameras and haven’t filmed anything yet. Do you have any tips on manually metering this camera? I know it has the exposure compensation wheel, but I’ve seen multiple people saying you can fully manually meter. I think I’m just a bit confused.
    Thanks for your time!

      @@johnwalbolt That's awesome to know :) I have the same camera and always wondered how it would affect the exposure so you can squeeze out a lot more light in darker indoor settings. Pretty awesome. A feature you often don't even find on most Super8 cameras.
