Dude that's a crazy story! Glad you kept your shit together and made it out. I fish a lot of rivers but have never put a knife on my pfd. Well, I'm putting one on it NOW!
NRS has updated the Pilot knife and is selling the old version at a discount. The knife now has an asymmetrical haft so you can tell without looking which blade side is sharp. The scabbard is also new, allowing more ways to release the knife.
Thanks for the review! Great story! Congrats on the whole breathing thing. It's a good warning to so many fisherman and boaters who aren't as prepared. As for the knife, I can't get over that clipping system. Even watching you, with all your practice, I worry, because you keep bringing your left hand up into the deployment and re-sheathing of your knife. Even when you don't use it, your left hand seems to want to be there. I'd want to be able to consistently do it one-handed from the position it sits on my jacket. Perhaps even practice with one hand then the other, but never both. I'm leaning more toward the Neko model, even if it is more likely to get lost. As for a titanium option, I just can't justify that price, even though I do fish almost exclusively in salt and brackish water. I'm just really careful about rinsing gear. But still consider these to be semi-disposable, considering the probability of loss, the lower corrosion resistance, and the difficulty in re-sharpening the factory serrations.
Thanks for sharing! Please consider moving your knife to a safer location though. If you ever find yourself taking a ducking and it becomes a survival situation, your knife as it is located can easily snag on the side of the boat as you struggle to get out of the water. I wear mine military style, high on one of the shoulder straps to prevent the possibility of it getting snagged as you try to haul yourself over the side of the boat. I attach using black zip ties. The white ones degrade quickly from the sun's rays! I'm a certified rescue diver and I hate seeing knives or any other equipment attached to the front of your PFD as it can snag at the worst times. Happy Paddling!...Eric
Man, I'm going to give you some advice, in your safety knife you should use an elastic band to hold it to the base, because it is easy to break it if you need it, but if by accident you drop it, it retains it.
Frightening moment. Good on you for keeping your cool. Knives very important in outdoor sports, and not for some macho reason, either. They are tools for safety. Scuba divers should carry knives for very same reasons.
I close my eyes and grab for the knife to see whats the natural position, best for me is handle down because of the way the knife releases with the two buttons, dont want to have to reposition the knife in your hand after unclipping it. 👍
@@spiltmilt I had mine like that at first but felt like it was just awkward to pull out that way. I just want that thing as easily accessible as possible.
Many thanks for this. I'm a swim-baiter and your video woke me up. I fish the heavy tackle you describe and will be adding a knife this spring.

Thanks for sharing. Situations go from OK to crisis in fractions of second - I've almost been a goner but saved by safety gear.
PFD, safety knife and rescue bag... all good ideas that just aren't that expensive relative to the cost of any entry level kayak. Great advice!

Appreciate your sober reminder of how quickly things can change and become life threatening!
Great video and safety tip. Glad you were able to free yourself.

Just started kayak fishing. Good info and advise . thanks.
I always keep a knife on my pfd. Never know when you need to quickly cut a line or anchor rope.

Self rescued many times with the knife in this position with no issues. I am happy where it is.
I have the copilot knife and it works great!

Off topic, but I see you have the predator seat on your 120 now.
Is it a big improvement? I know you didn't care for the original seat
Thanks!
It helped a little and its a better built chair but the bar still grinds in my lower back.
Thanks for the video. Does that knife float?
No it does not.
Which is the better way to position/ attach the Nrs knife on the pfd. Up or down?
I prefer point down but either works.

@@bearclaw2839 thanks for getting back to me. Much appreciated.
what inch belt can that be put on
You have that NRS badboy turned upside down.
I really don't think it matters which way it is oriented. It's clipped in.

I find this way to be most comfortable for me.
