    This was my father's first Zelda game. He is Colombian, and played this game with his brothers in Medellin. However, he had an English version of the game, and of course, he only knew Spanish. Given how important talking to NPC's is, they needed to translate it somehow, so here's what they did.
    He wrote down every text box on paper.
    He then handed it to his dad, who happened to be a principal for a school.
    The dad would then hand it to the English teacher, who would translate it in Spanish.
    The dad would then take the translations home so they could finish the game.
    As of today, he can finish this game in only a few hours. He's a master :)

    Ah yes, the game that has so much old game BS...
    I love this game, very close to my favorites, but the garbage it puts the players trough sometimes... mainly 4 times in particular:
    Walls, floors and secret areas that have no tell-tale signs, most being mandatory
    "See that random hole in the ground that looks like it will kill you? Jump there"
    The mirror quest
    Bagu's House
    And for the anecdote: I went on every tile in my first playthrough to find Bagu, and I do mean every tile.
    An encounter on the correct tile made me miss it.

      The purple slime in Saria tells you where to find Bagu, but you have to talk to it 4 times. No clue how anyone would know to do that considering barely any NPCs have more than one dialogue. Zelda 2 has a lot of charm as an emblem of the wild old days when you didn’t necessarily have to do anything very similar to the first game if your sequel. They took the same ideas and world of the first game, but didn’t feel obligated to take its mechanics, and it makes for a very unique and interesting experience that the series wouldn’t really do again.

    • @CamTheGalaxy
      @CamTheGalaxy 3 месяца назад +8

      Genuine question, do you not think the jump to the BOTW open world style wasn’t a similar jump to a new style, with disregard to many previous mechanics/established structure? I consider myself a bit of an outsider in understanding the older games and their flow from one to the next since I came in with BOTW, but as I’ve been watching my way through the old games the shift from Skyward to BOTW feels more and more stark

    • @gabrieldoon
      @gabrieldoon 3 месяца назад +13

      @@CamTheGalaxy BOTW is undeniably an innovator, but it had been decades since the series did something so drastic. LTTP and OOT established the 2d and 3d baselines, and the games didn't stray very far from them until BOTW. On the other hand there's Mario, who's had a bunch of super varied spinoffs over the years.

    • @CamTheGalaxy
      @CamTheGalaxy 3 месяца назад +4

      @@gabrieldoon Yeah that’s kinda what I’m saying, that BOTW actually had a very similar leap as Legend of Zelda to Zelda II. The only difference being that BOTW stuck the landing (and Zelda II probably only didn’t simply because it is so clearly a product of its time, like Linkus said it falls into that arcade early gaming energy of hard to be hard which when looked at next to the whole Zelda series, just sticks out like a sore thumb)

    • @user-be3qc7re9o
      @user-be3qc7re9o 2 месяца назад +1

      @CamTheGalaxy
      You also have to keep in mind that Zelda was always meant to encompass an "open world" philosophy that simply got lost starting with A Link To The Past.
      The reason why the series diverted into linearity in the first place was because it was simply much easier to develop a game that way when everything is in a straight path.
      BOTW was a first true attempt to go forward with that original design philosophy, so much so, that the prototype literally started out as a recreation of Zelda 1 with modern day mechanics.
      You can find the Zelda 1 Prototype the devs created on RUclips during the BOTW Game Conference.

    Play the fan remake ZIIAOL by Hoverbat, it makes the game SO much more fun and playable! There are NPCs at the towns that save your progress and set your respawn point, and if you die in a palace, you respawn at the start of the palace. Also he doubles the number of items in the game, and ALL of the new items are absolutely amazing! There's also dungeon maps which fill out as you go through the dungeon. There's also tons and tons of new content. Plus lots of other QoL changes.
    Oh and 1-UPs are permanent across game overs

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 2 месяца назад +6

      Yeah, I'd highly recommend Hoverbat's remake for someone who's never played Zelda 2 before. It does a pretty good job of balancing the quality of life improvements with additional challenges that make up for the reduced backtracking and less ways to cheese your way past some stuff. It's basically the same game in spirit, but with more tie-ins to the rest of the Zelda series. Feels roughly like the Final Fantasy GBA ports if I were to compare it to anything.

    Zelda II is probably in my top 3 for the series; it's for sure not great as the adventure game most people expect from the series, but on its own merit it has incredibly deep combat for how simplistic it is. It's super rough to play for the first time, but this is by far the game in the series I've replayed the most. I generally consider it more akin to a very primitive Dark Souls, at least in the sense that it's an action game with an extremely simple combat system with tons of depth in both execution and knowledge; I find that the Souls fans I've recommended it to tend to really take to it once they get past the obtuse "puzzles".

    • @cephelos1098
      @cephelos1098 3 месяца назад +10

      @@Smoove_J Deep doesn't mean complicated or hard to learn. You can do a lot with crouching jump slashes, but there's a lot of really interesting techniques that are way better in many situations, especially when compared to other NES games, and other Zelda games broadly. Few NES games have anything past "hit the enemy when they're next to you," and I can't think of any Zelda games that don't have an extremely low skill ceiling on their combat mechanics (which is by design, as from OoT on Zelda was decidedly about puzzle solving and not combat). I might be biased from playing this on hardware without save states, and from doing a fair bit of challenge running, but running in and doing crouching jump slashes isn't a silver bullet that blows the game right open, it's just a powerful tool in your kit.

      It would be like comparing tears of the kingdom to minish cap, Zelda II is closer to Totk in terms of experimenting with a different play style.
      Edit: The translations and dialogue however are atrocious.

    • @cephelos1098
      @cephelos1098 2 месяца назад

      @@Br0ken_Rob0ts Oh yeah, game is super rough. idr the name but there's a qol romhack that keeps as much of the core game unchanged while tuning a lot of the backtracking and the onerous parts. It's very hard, but never felt particularly unfair to me, because everything has a strategy. And the backtracking does suck, but it's honestly not too terrible for most of the game. I just finished a run of this on an og nes, had to pick between controller with either: sketchy B button, start/select require significant force, or sketchy d-pad.
    High-force start/sel was the pick to start off since you have limited magic, but by the time I had life, failing many sword strikes was less bad than missing one magic cast. Crippling your distance control was never an option.

    Just because Zelda 2 is the hardest game in the series doesn't make it bad, though certain sections are definitely cheap and rough around the edges. I think a largely combat-focused sidescrolling Zelda game makes for an interesting experiment. That said, this was never one of my favorites and I played little of it myself, preferring to watch my father replay it instead. God bless the Wii Virtual Console.

    Only people who say Zelda 2 is a bad game are those who have not played it fully.
    Also Manscaped is a scam, don´t trust those ads. They sell overpriced low-quality products that you can get cheaper and better from common stores. No sane man would take an electric razor to their nether regions.

    I think this game is one that Nintendo should've remade first, honestly, it's the one that needs it the most. Remove the frustrating things like the backtracking after deaths, and instant death pits. Make the pits work like they do in later Zeldas, where it saps a portion of your life bar but puts you at the start of the room instead. Also Link's sword range sucks, make it longer so you don't get hit trying to deal a hit on contact damage, lol.

    I can't beat this game without the easy mode mod.
    WHAT?! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SEE!? WHAT!? I DIED?! That happens a lot. That is not west! I was wondering where the palace theme was from when I heard it in Smash Bros Melee.
    I really hate Darknuts. They are a pain in the ass to fight. HOW MANY ARMS DOES HE HAVE!? HOW DOES HE SLASH OUT OF HIS PEE- I didn't notice extra arms. The last dungeon is a pain in the ass to get to but good luck actually reaching that point.
    DRACULA IS IN THIS GAME!? No Ganon is Dracula since blood on his ashes can revive him and he is weak to silver. What you saw was an Acheman.
    TOXIC BUBBLES!? I thought they were acid.
    I DON'T HAVE THE MAGIC! If I die, I have to go back through that cave. If you get the hammer you won't have to but that is even more of a pain to get. WHAAAAAAAT!? Be careful, some villagers will turn into bats. 12:41 Talking to this slime several times has him say something else. He gives you a clue that is not that useful.
    DUDE! HOW MANY CHUCHUS LIVE HERE?! That's not a Chuchu, that's a Bot (yes I'm serious.
    I'd be surprised if you weren't frustrated with this game. That's why I hate this game. And people think Elden Ring is hard. Isn't it? I don't know because I refuse to play Souls-like games. Lies of P gave me so much grief and brick walled me very early. I'm never playing a Souls game again (Rise of the Ronin doesn't count since it's not brutally hard).
    ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? You actually finished two dungeons. I couldn't do it. 18:23 Did you actually find that without a guide?
    I refuse to play Zelda 2 without save states because of how frustrating it is.
    WHAT IS THIS DOG FACE!? That is a Mau.

    I don't think this game is "bad," but I do think this game belongs in 2D Soulsborne genre.
    1:30 Presumably the correct translation would have been, "take the candle in the palace, THEN go west"
    3:15 >"I don't get the xp?"
    Much worse than that. (at 3:10 or 3:38, see upper-right corner of the screen)
    10:23 fun fact: JP version doesn't have "item get" animation. Whoever added it sure did a sloppy job.

    I’m playing Zelda II since it’s the one Zelda game I haven’t beaten alongside Phantom Hourglass (which I’m also working on, I’ve got one pure metal left before I get the phantom sword), I definitely think it’s underrated, but holy shit it is unforgiving, I had war flashbacks when I reached the second dungeon and saw those flying dragon(?) heads because of the Castlevania Medusa heads

    Zelda 2's biggest issue IMO is conveyance. Since the gameplay is broken up into 2D platforming and overworld exploration, they couldn't do the seamless, wordless, invisible guiding of the player Zelda 1 does quite as well. Like, it's there, but it's got the janky crutches of poorly translated NPC dialogue to prop it up and keep the player going the right way. Still a solid game, and even a solid Zelda game. It's just got some stiff competition from it's predecessor and descendants.

  • @GoeTeeks
    @GoeTeeks 3 месяца назад

    There is a difference between backtracking and runbacks. Zelda 2 has some bad runbacks, especially for Palace 2 or Death Mounting without the hammer, Palace 4 without the boots, Palace 6 isn't too bad, technically, and Palace 7 doesn't require a runback.

    After trying it this game is terrible. Not because its old but because its poorly designed. I played the original zelda 1986 a few years ago and loved playing it despite how old it was. The original was well designed for the most part. Zelda 2 is completely awful. No check points, except for the last dungeon, too many projectiles in levels and input reading enemys make for a terrible play experience.
