I have a friend who is big into sky diving. We were talking about it a while ago and he confessed that he had never packed a chute sober.
Probably safer to keep it that way at this point
I feel like you can dive drunk but you might wanna be as present and sober as possible while prepping your gear lol
Great video as always. Wanted to say thank you for making me aware of the hammerless hinge pin remover. I keep it in my pocket at all times, a few days ago we had a 45cm snow storm and i got a call from an elderly client that couldn't get out of the house for a medical appointment who's normal contractor hadn't showed up, called me, and i broke a shear pin on my snowblower on a newspaper thrown on the walkway. Halfway to my truck to find a hammer i said wait.... worked beautifully. Not its original intended purpose, but worked beautifully, saved me a bunch of time. Cheers, hope everyone is staying safe and taking care.
Many decades ago, I had a job that frequently took me to Prestwick, Scotland. I often stayed at the Piersland House Hotel, across the road from the Royal Troon Golf Course. Piersland House was a converted Manor House which belonged to Johnny Walker’s Great Grandfather, as I recall. Used to enjoy a dram of Black, until a Barman introduced me to Famous Grouse, a very common blended bar scotch there. I drink it to this day, when I can’t find the Tamdhu here. Another fine single malt, but tough to find, even in Scotland. Cheers!
Funny, I think of Famous Grouse as a "well, if that's all there is" scotch. I'm not really a scotch guy though (even though I'm the son of Scottish immigrants to Canada), I drink a lot more rum.
'Blue' is only 'cool' because people always associate cost to quality.
It wouldn't have been nice to see "red" picked out blind to see if it's as awful as our mind thinks it is.
(I hope there's enough alcohol in these to kill the omicron!)
Oh yeah, Tarah should have swapped one of the Blues for a Red when their eyes were closed to fuck with them. Woulda been black magic if they liked the Red.
Now, I'm a novice, but my favorite smoky whisky so far would HAVE to be Ardbeg An Oa. It fills the room with a smell like a wood fire that lingers for hours, which bears a lot of happy memories for me. Tend to keep some around for a drink when I need a bit of a pick me up.
When I worked in a liquor store a distributor told me that there is a platinum that's supposed to be the best jw ever made. He'd never seen it tho.
similar to Hennessy pure white, seen it overseas while in military, but havent found it here state side
Ah yes I've seen this in duty free shops sometimes, I think
I've seen the platinum many times at airports, never tried it. Same with the Hennessey 'Pure White' (which I currently have a bottle of) It's only for 'abroad' sales.
Didn’t platinum get replaced by the re release of the gold 18 year? I’ve had it , it’s alright
Legendary content yet again
I love blind tastings like this. My wife and I did a series of blind tasting all the bourbons we typically get. After a couple run-offs, we found what we thought was our favorite was actually our least favorite.
And now you have a new favorite.
Lol I suggested this test to you as a joke a while back
And my grandpa is Barack Obama
I think I might even remember that 👍🥃
Blue is so divisive you couldn't even agree with yourselves.
"a healthy pour, maybe half a bottle" ... I mean I agree with you, although shame about the bottle sizes.
i concur!
Great test, thank you all! No Green Label? I can't say you missed much, black is the best value of the range (imo) and the most distinctive.
Glad to see you back in front of the turntable! It's been too long.
7-8am video drop... Little early in the morning for scotch?
If you enjoy the smokey aroma of the Black then get yourself some Laphroaig because it’s that single malt’s addition to the JW blend that grants it this bouquet.
But as others comment, for me too there’s just something so familiar about Red. Seems exactly the sort of thing a film noir private eye would stash in his filing cabinet to add to his morning coffee. Johnnie Walker came close to going bust during the GFC very glad they didn’t. Can’t have been the only person for whom it proved the first introduction to Scotland’s water of life.
It's not Laphroaig, it's Caol Ila - the key reason being that Diageo owns both JW and Caol Ila, whilst Laphroaig is Beam Suntory.
The distilleries also have really different taste profiles, but noticing those characters within a blended whisky might be a real challenge to most (and definitely to me!).
@@TheEnglishRedneck45 I stand corrected, sir.
@@michaeljames4904 I vote this be the start of a new taste series - 5 different Islay whiskies on the Boozy Susan
I'm a professional bartender, and amateur drunken degenerate. I've had quite a few questionable things in my mouth over the years. That gross liquor you've had/heard of, I've probably had it. And I probably thought it was actually pretty good, or at least not that bad. I had one sip of Johnny Red, poured the glass down the sink, and gave away the bottle.
Ok, I have to ask. Have you ever tried any of the Costco Kirkland Scotch's? They have several (at least 3) to choose from.
their Speyside is great, honestly! and we also like their recent Bottled in Bond bourbon which is distilled by Barton.
Looking at the prior in sequence elements, you'll notice your bar for comparison to the two Blue samples was drastically different.
Reversing the order of tasting would likely have shown confusion for different ones.
You are on a roll
The biggest con in all Scottish history. Go for a good single malt and save yourself some money. A good well aged Glenmorangie is boss. Where’s the water? Separate to clear the pallet.
What I've found over the years is just drink what you like. Everyone's tastes are different, everyone's senses are different, you can have the same drinks on the same table and two different people will have two different opinions of them.... It doesn't make much sense to me to listen to anyone else but me when it comes to what booze I enjoy the taste of. If no one else likes it, awesome for me, because that means it SHOULD be cheaper, and few things are better than cheap booze you actually like.
What are good value whiskeys you would recommend to someone not willing or able to shell out a lot? I have two single malt scotches in the cabinet right now, but even at the slow rate I am drinking them they are starting to run low
there's a famous "best bourbons under $50" list that gets kicked around a lot. i think i even have an older version of it linked on my web site here... deviating.net/nom/low_cost_bourbons.xlsx
Green label should’ve been there. Good vid btw
My Daughter bought me the same Scotch mix pack for Christmas I'll have to cut into it now and do my own taste test
heeeeey Alyssa owns
For me Red is just inconsistent. Don't roll the dice, buy Black or Monkey Shoulder.
Heck yes to the Monkey Shoulder
I like the complexity in the double black too. Have you tried green?
I have to say I've had several _far_ worse blended scotches than JW Red, but I suppose it's a question of preference - or that DeviantOllam really hasn't ever dug into the bottom-shelf plastic bottle whixkies like I have. It is the _worst_ of the JW lineup, I'll give it that without any hesitation, and I've tasted most of the ones on this lineup at one point or another.
In fact, I have a pour of JW Red in front of me right now, so lemme give you some tasting notes:
On the nose, a hint of table varnish and a cloying sweet vanilla of a drop of custard that's dried onto the back-board of a kitchen, overlaid by a strong, almost cedary wooden scent.
At mouth, an almoust bourbony sweetness mixed with a bit of bog sweat and turpentine, turning into a rich bouquet of jock strap and paint thinner.
Evolving into a numbing sensation of having swallowed industrial wood pulp being dissolved in acids for making toilet paper.
I give it a solid 4/10, as I have tasted at least three ostensibly actually reputably produced whiskies that are way less pleasant to drink. Kippis!
Okay, but now I want to know what those three were 😅
Have you tried any danish whiskey like Stauning Whisky or Whisky from Trolden Destilleri & Bryghus ApS
Although I can taste the difference between blue, black , double black, green and blue… I enjoy red just as much if not more…
Really? So did Winston Churchill, allegedly. So you're in good company, it seems 😉
I actually love Johnnie Red but you have to realize that it took me until almost 15 years ago to even really start to like bourbon/whiskey at all, and when I was 19 my uncle let me try some HIGH end scotch(I don't know what it was and he died about 20 years ago so I can't ask) and I couldn't finish it; at that time I was mostly into tequila. Then one day in late 2019 I decided to try Johnnie Red and loved it. I have tried Black and I got a taster of Green but that's been as far as I've gone so far...
Deviant, I agree with almost everything you say but although JW Red is overpriced it is still an enjoyable drink.
i does satisfy me in the B.A.C. department... beyond that, i feel more testing is needed. ;-)
If you can get your hands on a bottle of Highland Park 18 year you won't look back at JW.
For a minute, I thought this was going to be like Penn and Teller. (No talking by second person). Anyway... Sooooo many things are all in our heads. I recently watched guitar hipsters bragging about how THEIR so and so brand was soooo much better with sounds and tones and feel, etc. Once they were blindfolded, shit went right out the window.
Indeed.... Alyssa took a few moments to be heard. :-) Also, i did not know about the guitar video. i LOVE when blind testing throws preconceived notions out the window!
Have you considered doing a coffee cupping like this?
Muff bomb sushi eating? I don't think RUclips allows muff bomb eating.
Ha
I've never liked Johnnie. Red makes me want to barf (because it tastes like vomit to me), I find Black less palatable than white label Jim Beam which is troubling because here in Australia it's double the price, Gold is acceptable but more expensive than my favourite bang-for-buck spirit which is Auchentoshan 12 year, Blue is HIDEOUSLY expensive here so I have only ever actually had two taste-tester half-shots of it, and neither ever made me want to buy a bottle because seriously, $240 for a blended scotch? Blantons Single Barrel Gold is $160.
Eh, you know what you like, but in most cases, I would take a water.
Alyssa Miller...?
As in Andrew Garfields GF..?
They don't look the same person..?
I was starting to wonder at the beginning if Alyssa was going to say anything. Ruder (and wrong) people might say you should stop waffling :p
JW Red tastes like motor oil mixed with acetone. JW Black is perfectly serviceable (I suppose my appreciation for it increased with Hitchens’ endorsement of it - ruclips.net/video/BP51NnoVErA/видео.html), but now I’m intrigued by the Double Matured, and certainly want to try that.
I started many moons ago with the red, no wonder I didn't like it. I was young and didn't know of other versions of JW at the time. 🙄 Noob, haha😆
Unless there is Islay or Jura on the label ,well life is too short for second best..
I think the reason why 2 and 6 tasted so different to you guys is because of what was leading before it. Possibly ruined your pallet
I prefer JW Swing
Mmmm Johnny walker blue
The blue is quite good but overpriced because of market oddness
@@DeviantOllam Yeah, I never understood that. Loving the content dude ✌🏻

I know that safety is always a priority in your neck of the woods, so I'm not worried for you, but sharing a glass with someone I'm not cohabitating with is anxiety inducing at this point. Even if it is "self-sterilizing".
