    I'm wondering if you can increase thrust with a laminar-flow pill-shaped negative end, a smaller and sharper version for the positive, and put a cowl over it.
    More to the point, Shape the positive end like a pinecone facing down and leave the negative end smooth. I'm curious how this could interact with the design.
    Edit: not a request, I'm just thinking out loud

    • @doggoluvr133
      @doggoluvr133 Год назад

      Laminar flow requires slow movement of the liquid, you can create aerodynamic parts but building for laminar flow would limit the maximum airflow and therefore thrust from the thruster

    See if possible to take those ion engines on the little boat and place them on the edge of a three arm windmill, of course you’ll have to work out some sort of contact band to facilitate spinning. Hook the power source to solar cell and see if it possible to make the work it provides into energy hope that makes sense and keep up the good work!

    This was way cool! But how is it gonna work in space if theres no air to move for thrust?

    • @MillersPlanetOne
      @MillersPlanetOne  5 лет назад +19

      Really good question! So in space they use xenon atoms, which stream out into space. The thrusters don’t necessarily need any air to push off of, they push off of the xenon atoms emitted.

      Sam, most satellite spacecraft that use ion thrusters usually carry a fuel supply on board the satellite for consumption.

    • @davemwangi05
      @davemwangi05 5 лет назад

      @@avionicstechshop7664 Would you consider the Xenon to be the fuel for the satellite? I don't think so. i think whatever generates the electricity is the fuel source.

    • @avionicstechshop7664
      @avionicstechshop7664 5 лет назад +3

      @@davemwangi05 Greetings, to answer your comment in reality the spacecraft will not operate if it runs out of propellant or power as the craft needs both to create ions. For a more complete understanding of how ion drives work search NASA'S website for Dawn spacecraft propulsion system. RUclips also has some excellent explainer videos on the topic. The comment section is not a good place to completely explain this topic.

    • @pratt123
      @pratt123 4 года назад +1

      Don't confuse the power of the thruster system with the propellant of the system. These are two distinct concepts that happen to be be the same substance in chemical rockets, as the power comes from the propellant itself as it combusts.
      In ion engines, the propellant is the xenon gas or other material that will have ions leaving the thruster into space. The power is either provided by batteries or solar panels.

    how is the electrical part made? what is your transformer? how do you generate the electricity to send to the ion thruster. is it battery or do you hook it up to the wall socket?

    • @MillersPlanetOne
      @MillersPlanetOne  4 года назад

      I think I passed AC (from the wall) through a CFL circuit, and sent that output to the primary of a flyback transformer. The output was around 30kv

  • @gorrium5027

    the vasimr engine your referring to is technically not an ion engine its a plasma engine " A plasma propulsion engine is a type of electric propulsion that generates thrust from a quasi-neutral plasma. This is in contrast to ion thruster engines, which generate thrust through extracting an ion current from plasma source, which is then accelerated to high velocities using grids/anodes. "

    • @nightowl104
      @nightowl104 4 года назад +1

      Do you know plasma engines in detail??? I am doing my MS research on them

    • @ozymandiasking173
      @ozymandiasking173 4 года назад

      @gorrium Lol thanks for clearing that up for everyone. I'm not familiar with the term 'quasi-neutral plasma' but if i had to guess i would think thats referring to plasma formed by AC current like, for example, what you would get with a tesla coil. Because the polarity of the charge keeps changing, i guess you could say the net charge is neutral. Assuming that is indeed what you mean, and Im not misunderstanding your terms, then by your own definition of an ion thruster, you would be incorrect in stating that this is not an ion thruster. The device featured in this video uses high voltage dc, thus the result is an ion propulsion and not 'quasi-neutral plasma'.

    Electrons aren't ripped from the air.
    Electricity is flow, just high frequency like water... The compression at the positive small end .... Causes sympathetic resonance with the environment, overcoming environmental ability for capacitance, releasing light.

    High voltage + high current= death
    You experience roughly 15,000 volts if you shuffle across your polyester carpet in wool socks on a cold, dry winter day and touch a metallic doorknob. Shocking (ha) but not deadly. Now 15,000 volts with a few amps will do you a real dirty.
