  • Belle Hutt is 23, and suffers from severe narcolepsy. It’s a condition that causes her to fall asleep up to 15 times a day, as well as producing hallucinations. She now lives in Amsterdam with her boyfriend Maikel, and works as a personal trainer. Here, Belle talks about the origins of her narcolepsy, how other people have reacted to her condition, and how she’s adapted her life to accommodate it.

Well mate, if you stay up for almost 40hrs and are expected to function like a normal human being, you know, not falling asleep, paying attention and what not, I guess you cant help but die or kill for a proper nights rest. I remember one time i stayed awake for almost 70hrs. I drank so much coffee, so much Monster and ate like 25 cafeine pills a day just to not fall asleep. I needed to because i had a shitton of work to do that i fell behind, my finals were coming closer and I had an interview for an entry position.
The two most tortorous things are listenin to the most boring math lecture you can imagine and driving. Honestly, never been so scared to get in me car in me whole life, because sometimes you wouldnt fall asleep driving, just "waking up". You dont quite recognize your surroundings and stuff, like youve just been put into that situation where youre going 60mph down the road.
That said, I would die for a proper nights rest but I am also willing to die. its a win-win situation.

But then there’s plenty of black people who are rich like Will Smith and Denzel Washington, we are all born with are own challenges some more then others but if you want to make the most at of life you need to stop blaming other people and except what you have and don’t have and make a effort to get want you want, your not going to get far if you play a victim.

It’s cruel, and my dreams have been dashed, medical school was gone, certain relationships get ruined and some people even think you’re wasted or on drugs.

"Invisible" (they're not invisible, people just don't look close enough) illnesses suck. I feel you there.
I have quite a few chronic "invisible" illnesses and they're deliberating. I have chronic migraines (4-5 a week) and have had them since I was 2 - that's my "main" problem, and people still think I'm overreacting despite mothers who have given painful births stating that migraines are much worse.
And narcolepsy sucks. It's gross when your eyes start closing by themselves and you want to be awake; you want to live. You fight it, but you'll always end up laying down and giving in. It feels gross, and what's worse, is that the sleep is a temporary relief... so the thing you really don't want to do is the only thing that will make you feel better. That lack of power and the pure sensation that you're sleep deprived is nasty.
I hope you magically get better. Even if it's not possible I do wish that for you ❤️

I have narcolepsy without cataplexy, very similar to hers, however, she's lucky that naps make her feel awake temporarily again. For me, if I lay down for a nap, I'll easily sleep a few hours. Unmedicated, I can sleep up to 17-20 hours of a day, waking up periodically, say 5-8 times, but can only stay awake anywhere from 10 mins to maybe an hour. Basically when I sleep, my 'battery' doesn't recharge so the quality of my sleep is always poor no matter how much I sleep. I've tried everything, change in diet, etc. Minor improvements at most. I knew something was wrong when I was younger and someone said, "I got such a good night's sleep last night, I feel so refreshed and woke up ready to go and alive!" And I remember thinking, "That's possible? I wonder what that's like. I've never felt that."

      3) Also, how do you keep blood clots, skin infections, muscle atrophy and bone density loss at bay, if you are not subjecting your body to work against gravity and motion and moderate wear and tear, just like nature intended?
      4) What about obesity, blood-sugar metabolism related issues and other complications arising from this?
*"The hardest is not being able to spend time with my family. My husband and son are so good at helping me, but it is still very hard on them."*
Your own life is very hard, but thank you for recognizing that their lives are hard too - patients often times are sadly unable to see that caretakers' lives involve sacrifice for them.
My advice would be to use a major portion of your awake time eating, exercising, emptying bowels, bathing, skin care etc. with some conversations and hugs with husband and son, and asking your husband to give you deep tissue massages maybe 2-3 times a week to make some use your asleep time and to tell your husband and son that in order to compensate for reduced awake interaction with you, they can cuddle you every 2-3 days during your asleep time.

asdf asdf Honey it’s not that you mite get it more than likely you could have it but not diagnosed. Just an example. Or just by some twist of fate something happens in a persons life and it comes on that way. As a kid growing up I lived in a very abusive house. I would make myself go to sleep as a way of staying safe and not being accused of any mayhem. Cause the consequences meant a beating. After doing that for so long now my body responds to stress by physically and mentally become drained and I have to take a nap. Just being around my bipolar sister and hearing her endlessly talking about the past puts me in that state and I have to go down. Honey that’s just my road not act like a doctor or anything

In my last year of school I had an horrible ear inflammation that came out of nowhere and would not leave, even the slightest touch (or wind) made me cry in pain. I always sat next to a window and one teacher made me take of my hat and required me to keep the window next to me open for atleast 20 min. each lesson. I was not allowed to change seats either. Her talking about falling asleep in class and kids taking pics and making fun of her made me so grateful that I graduated before camera phones were a thing. I used to fall asleep in class all the time and kids were pretty mean about it. I now realize I had and still have sleep apnea, and that was very likely the cause, but no one wanted to look into that. They just assumed I was lazy or stayed up too late all the time.

    • @PFMediaServices

      It's such a double-edged sword, hey?
I thank you for sharing this line of thinking.
My response became a lot longer than I expected, so you're welcome to skip... but I'm glad to have written it and perhaps it will resonate with someone else. ✌️🍍
I've got a severe learning/developmental disability and chemical mood disorder that weren't diagnosed until my late teens; treatment didn't fully stabilize them for a long time after that.
Kids were merciless, toying with my social ineptitude. Teachers just thought I was dawdling or being lazy and held me to the same standard as other students. Family knew something was "off" but not what (they did consult doctors who waved away their concerns), and therefore couldn't provide support that would help me be more successful (though they loved me and did the best they could with what they had).
If the internet had been around when you and I were young, our parents would have been more likely to find the answers they were looking for and the resources we needed. It's crossed my mind many times how much less discouraging my path through life might have been, with an education properly fitted to my disability (but these are just musings, not a "what if" pity party).
At the same time, I have never thought about how our current technologies might have affected the social impact!
As adults we might now have the skills, strategies, and maturity to compensate for gaps in education methods, but I know that I'm as socially inept as I was through elementary school, and no special classes would have changed that in my childhood.
Today's technology would have been much harder for us to handle, able to spread the humiliation we already felt far beyond the contained spaces of our schools and neighborhoods.
The internet, social media, and our devices are gifts I dreamed of as a child - they allow me to learn more than I could ever focus on in a classroom, earn a living on my own terms, meet people who share my interests, ignore those who don't care about my perspective or feelings, and know that I'm not the only one whose brain works like this.
But as grateful as I am for these blessings, I'm absolutely certain that if they had emerged just a few years earlier, I'd be a much different, more wounded person today - if I was still here at all.
That's where my thoughts on this subject end, for now. It'll keep percolating at the back of my brain with other "things to ponder sometimes", and leave you with thanks, again, for providing this opportunity to see the sword's other edge.
Cheers, and all the best. 💪🍍

I had a friend in High School with this disease. In his senior year one year behind me he drove home from his girlfriend's house late at night....she tried to get him not to drive home that night. He fell asleep on a highway at highway speed at hit a semi truck coming in the other lane head on clipping the drivers wheel of the semi off, with such force the semi rolled on its side and his car left pieces scattered for hundreds of feet. I happen to be working as a photographer for a local paper and heard the accident on the scanner I had and went to go get pics for the paper. I was allowed thru the police line and the only recognizable part of his car was a rear panel....he had a very unique car and I knew who's it was right away. When I got there they were covering him with a white sheet that turned red almost immediately. It was just surreal and I never really processed it till years later. He should not have been allowed to drive....ever....his girlfriend was destroyed that night too because she knew he shouldn't have tried driving home. Please do not drive....its not just your life you risk but others too.

You can drive as a person with narcolepsy because in most cases you can feel sleep attacks coming on- you know what triggers them- and you’ll usually take stimulants / sedatives to regulate your sleep. Narcoleptics don’t have the right amount of a neurotransmitter that controls your sleep/wake cycle so we supplement it with medicine. You can usually plan your day/lifestyle around windows of time where you know you’re at your most awake. It’s only when it progresses past a certain point that you lose your license. I’d say I’m probably a safer driver than my healthy peers because I’m so hyper vigilant & extra careful & on some kind of stimulant when I drive. (Also they make us feel normal whereas a healthy person may feel high when they take them.)

Poor girl my fiance has idolpathic hypersomnia/ narcolepsy a super rare sleep disorder that specialist are in the dark about it. She will sleep for20 23 hours one day next she'll have bouts if sleep throughout the day Drs have denied her to perform any type if work. It's really hard to deal with but I love her alot and will move mountains for her if needed. She also sleep walks where she looks 100% normal and awake doing normal things like cleaning or cooking eyes totally open and will have a complete conversation with you but in reality she's actually sleeping truly strange if you've never seen or dealt with someone having that. She can't remember any of it and sometimes says she dreamt she was doing this or that. One time I caught her cooking eggs at 3am and she had scrambled eggs all throughout the kitchen they were everywhere even in cupboards on plates or bowls like she was serving them to people. Scary stuff I tell you so I wake up every night 2 to 3 times making sure everyone is safe and she hasn't left in the car. I have his the keys in the past somehow shed find them very last time she got in the car and started it she was in her underwear. If I didn't hear the car start and woke up to stop her it would of been really bad I now have to put all keys in my pants picket and sleep in them. I also have tins if bells in all the doors and booby traps on Windows to wake me up if she tries leaving in her sleep. I LIVE YOU MORE THEN THE UNIVERSE AND BEYIND BABE I WILL BE HERE FOR YOU TIL THE DAY I PASS AND WILL WATCH OVER YOU WHEN I GO TO HEAVEN. I WILL PRORECT YOU. YOU MEAN THE WORLD TO ME. I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU BABE YOU MAKE ME SMILE AND LAUGH EVERYDAY I WOULD BE LOST WITHOYT YOU

@@NZ28188 aww thanks. have a couple misspellings after I re read it. But yeah she's my world along with our 7yo daughter that crys to me every night about mom.. not playing or doing for stiff with her. pretty sad to watch. But have to stay strong for us all so sometimes I'll. lay next to her waiting for my daughter to fall asleep so she knows dad will always be there in case mom doesn't wake up. The guy in this video is super strong to go through what he is with her. Takes a living person to do that. I'll be with her to the day I die. She won't marry me though because I owe thousands to old bills from a business I had to dissolve to take more care of her but I'll never ever tell her it was because of her. It would crush her

btrim1974 that sounds really difficult I’m glad she has someone like you though. I have chronic Lyme + babesia and my boyfriend has a lot of patience with me. I know most people wouldn’t be able to deal with my mood swings, anxiety, exhaustion and doing my errands for me all the time because i can barely leave my bed some days. When someone sticks with you despite an illness/disability you know that they truly love you, and I can tell you really love her. Goodluck and I hope things get better for you guys

@@NZ28188 well thanks hope things get better your way also. my dad had Lyme disease terrible. I had my issues also that turned into a bad addiction that led me into suboxone treatment then finally had enough told Drs I'm done they offered treatment for free so never went back to them and used kratom to kick all suboxone opiates and feel very part of my disintegrating spine and love it. I believe I used the drugs to cope with the stress with her also but now seeing it clearly it's not bad at all and love it
