The problem with what Jeannie said is that unfortunately, there are way too many parents who either don't have time, or don't care enough to help their children with their homework. So if the homework was dependent on your family doing it with you, that would put a lot of kids in the dark.
healingduck or didn't finish school themselves so they don't know how to help you, also if your parents speak a different language that makes it hard as well..when i was in school i was all alone, i was in charge of making sure my hw was done...no one sat down with me to help
***** meanwhile you just spewed a bunch of ignorance. The irony.. Not one of them said that there should be no homework. They said LESS homework and assignments that give children useful, transferable skills. You couldn't afford to pay attention huh?
***** while you're writing essays, I'm about to cook shrimp and grits. I hope you didn't think I would actually read that. Lol you've already proven your ignorance child. Save the short stories for someone else.
In Canada there is a class called personal resources and they teach you about saving, spending, money, cooking, how to rent and buy a house, how to write a check, the process of getting your license, bills, ect. Things you really need to know about in the future. And there's a class called civics where you learn about you basically. What you're good at, what you weaknesses are, what you should be when you grow up, the class is all about learning about yourself. I live in Ontario so I don't know about other provinces across Canada but those 2 classes helped a lot.
Omg this class would've helped me out SO much! I just graduated high school and turned 18 so paying for Bill's and taxes are soon approaching for me and I'm so scared about doing something wrong and screwing my finances up. Sure my family help me out here and there but they can't just do everything for me. I don't think we have classes like that in the states, or at least in the state I live in :(
fahima matin Yes, they really did help a lot. It's important stuff you need to know about unlike some of the pointless things they teach you in math class. They really prepare you for adulthood. What state do you live in?
Nichole Marie Michigan. You're very lucky to have classes like that. Learning about what is important and relevant to the real world like taxes and such things is something that could be beneficial for so many people! In Michigan, mortgage, insurance and healthcare is so high so having some courses like what you have in Canada would've most definitely guided me to make proper financial decisions. 😕
fahima matin I've been to Michigan a couple times. I get what you're saying. Your guys insurance & healthcare is so different than ours. They really need to change some classes and teach more relevant stuff cause when you're ready for the real world you will know more of what to do. I'm 18 also, will be 19 in June and I have a better understanding of stuff because of that class I took.
Nichole Marie Your Civics is definitely different from the Civics we have here in Louisiana. Our Civics is learning about the Government of the US. It used to be Free Enterprise & Civics (half credit courses that were combined). You take it your Sophomore year in high school here. But the process of learning about real life things with bills, writing a check, etc. is our Financial Math class but its a class that's not on our Core Curriculum so many people take the Pre-Calculus (College Algebra), the real Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, etc. (courses not many need but look great on your transcript and are required most times) to meet the Core Curriculum thing. I was in the Pre-Cal (College Algebra) course but knew I wouldn't make it in that class and since I'm graduating this year, moved to Financial Math. Many people have phased down to that class (or the Math Essentials class) due to the other harder subjects. It has definitely helped me somewhat but since it was my teachers first year teaching the course (shes also new to our school and a coach), she didn't really have any guidelines to go by. She even told us they didn't even give her a course curriculum to teach us so she's been winging it all year. Thankfully, she has gotten them to write a curriculum for next year so she and all the other teachers teaching that course and Math Essentials can have something to teach.
TBH homework got so hard or long that I would find things online to answer it , get answers from friends or cheat I stopped seeing homework as important anymore because I didn't see it as reinforcement of what I learnt
agreed and somedays id be so stressed out that ineither forgot or didnt do it becauseitmfelt impossible, tomfinish specially when all our books were online and couldnt search the number to. them or the number didnt work.
At one point i even fell like looking for the answer was too much work because i was so tired from studying and my homework for other classes I probably got 2-3 hours of sleep a day when i have to go to school
The sad part about it is that with all that homework, studies show that kids today are no smarter than their predecessors. In some ways, it's the opposite. Obviously something is not adding up and the system needs revamping.
Esther Grace I think grade inflation and technology are to blame. But I also think it is more competitive now especially when it comes to college entrance.
blaq2handle nope you're all wrong lol. The real reason why kids are not smarter than you'd expect them to be after all of this homework ... our education system is not focused on kids learning anything or being able to apply what you teach them to real life. The education system is about tests. I graduated high school two years ago and from 3rd grade until my senior year of high school, all we focused on all year long were district benchmarks and state mandated tests. The same math problems over and over, the same essay response/format over and over. I had to throw all of that away once I got to college because it had nothing of value. And with all of these tests I was never prepared for the one test that mattered, my SATs. Our public education system is extremely flawed.
equilibrium DanceWorks I agree with you. I was never prepared for the SAT's either. My hs average was a 96 but my SATs were mediocre because I never knew how to take a standardized test.
equilibrium DanceWorks i totally agree with you,am in med school and sometimes the way my test is conducted,if i cram the topic i will do bettter than someone who actually read, its a luck kind of thing, everyone is more concerned about the grades than actually knowing the course, and lets face it,the higher your grades the more intelligent you are perceived to be...
The education system is so messed up because it's to the point that students aren't actually learning, they are just memorizing information, formulas, for the sake of their finals or exams because of the scores. No one is really processing the knowledge, no one is understanding it and actually enjoying it. Learning should be an enjoyment because it's part of your life. It shouldn't be just because of the grade on your report card, and with this excess amount of homework it just stresses the kids out and like Tamar said makes them spend hours even whole nights just trying to finish it, sometimes even for just one class. So obviously it cuts off family time to the max because the schools have kids just overworking them and not letting them enjoy their youth. Homework is needed, but it should at be at max two hours but not four or five.
I agree, because I have so much homework and so many things to do and remember and once I take the test or once we go over it in class a few days later I don't remember anything. The things they teach us I have never used in real life. On the last few days of school I had a project for every single class to finish. They give us so much stuff and expect the parents to help the children handle it but my mom doesn't get off of work until almost ten at night and not every parent has the time to do all of that stuff
I agree to ab extend more of a correction homework should be given when needed like if i did not fibish answering a question because you did not had the time and then finish it home is not to much work is just finishing somthing that would be like 30 minutes or less not to much time.correct me if im wrong by any chance
+ciguana 2mlgprovideo I agree with that but when I have a binder full of homework it's just too much. Also they say that homework is helping you remember the things we went over in class but at my school they grade the questions to see if you got it wrong or right and it goes in the grade book. Homework is supposed to be practice so why is it counting as a grade. Having it completed could be for a grade but marking answer you got wrong and counting it as a grade makes no sense
I really loved this discussion because I go to school for like 7.5 hours a day and I have sooooo much homework after school and I don't even have time to eat or sleep since I'm so busy doing the homework, stressing out about my studies, extra curricular things, and so on. It's so exhausting.
I know it's hard for teachers to do because they are so busy, but I feel like they should take the time to coordinate projects and homework so that kids get the time to do it and properly. I feel like that would make the teachers lives easier because they could take the time that they would have used towards grading new papers to doing other things like planning the curriculum for the next week. I would be so mad if I was a teacher and I had to waste my time reading and correcting garbage when I could be doing something else because teachers usually do that on their personal time. With this system they won't be yelling at kids all the time for not doing their homework.
Also from as an educational institution it is disappointing that the school districts do not realize that from a psychological perspective less is being retained due to the amount of work required to be completed.
Lies ! Just to make it not so obvious , at my school we would all copy off of each other's different answers so it wouldn't seem like we all had the same exact answer ! Because every kid in the class having the same exact answer , the same exact way , and then what about when we get to the "Explanation " then that's where you don't want to make it seem obvious !
Loni ain't lying about that "NEW MATH" as I call it LOL I have an MBA and tried to help my little cousin with some geometry. I looked at that sheet and said "you know what... Ain't nothing wrong with being an English Lit major" LOL hell, I was one in undergrad!!
I’m so late to this discussion but yeah it’s incredibly hard. Sometimes the district will randomly change the curriculum in the middle of the year to staff we’ve never heard of and the teachers don’t even know what they’re teaching or refuse to teach it because they make math so unreasonably difficult. School is so stressful that I’ve literally given myself a stress fever.
Tamar and Tamera took us to church today! Preach ladies!!! I do agree, to quote Tamar's biggest role model, that "reading is what? Fundamental!" Homework is absolutely necessary and shouldn't be abolished. But I do question it's overall purpose...I used to do 4 hours of homework a night and look what happened to me: I'm a troll on RUclips throwing shade at Tamar and her edges just to get recognized. You can tell my university edumacation worked out real well. OOOP!
Hahahaha... I am done! But seriously try going to school for more than 12hrs then go back home study some more for 2 hours or so, go to sleep for 3-4 hrs n repeat.. Didn't benefit me at all, I mean look at me now talking to a troll.
I hate that mess when instructors wanna give you a 12-page assignment or a project or something over winter or spring break. I'm like its called a BREAK; why do I have to do all of this work on my break?
I think that the reason why Finland has been faring so well on PISA tests is because we don't have so much homework and kids really enjoy being at the school. Finns start the school at the age of seven. Kids have less than a half hour of homework in the elementary school so they have time to play around. We study things that we really need in life like doing the laundry, paying taxes, cooking or baking in the comprehensive school. We can choose the couses which we want to study in the upper secondary school so we can study subjects in which we are interested in.
I remember in high school I didn't do a day of homework. I finished it all at school. I do think they should ease up on the homework or let the parents be more in charge of giving them homework. I agree with Tamar about the family thing.
NuCreechure How did you never do any homework? Weren't you sanctioned by your teachers, i can never get away with that. My parent's wouldn't even allow it. Were your grades good though?
ShrinkingViolla I finished it all at school before going home. My grades were excellent. I knew that if I didn't do it at school, I wasn't going to do it at all because I had a job.
I just graduated from highschool, so I can accurately speak about this. Homework has remained a constant in all of our lives during the school years, so yes I do think its needed. Students should be able to practice things on their own so we know we can do these on our own but now a days the work load that we have to deal with really sucks. Teachers (these days) aren't really teaching what we see on tests that matter, and thats probably why no one sees too much progress on test scores.
You are speaking the ultimate truth!! like just recently we had a math test. And my teacher told us "it's what have already learned". Everyone after the test was over, were saying "we didn't learn any of that, what is she talking about" like I'm in the middle with this topic. Because your getting homework after homework and sometimes it's due the next day. And I'm going to honestly say I have fallen asleep mid homework because the stuff my teachers had given me were due the next day. So it was a lot but you are telling the truth most teachers aren't really teaching anymore.
sidekickin721 Just to piggy-back on what Sidekickin is saying, for any parents out there wondering why their kids are doing GREAT in school but not in the SAT, there are typically two reasons: 1. Your kid's public or EVEN private school SUCKS and they just pad students grades to make them THINK that are smart, so a 4.0 student gets BELOW a 1600 on the SAT OR 2. The SAT is something that you have to TRAIN for. Yes, I am a firm believer that kids who do better in school naturally do better on the SAT, but a "Smart" "A" student can easily take the SAT, then study and learn all the tricks, and then see a 400-500 point increase months later. Trust me, I am an SAT and High School tutor. Also, I do NOT think lowering HW is doing the trick. Kids these days are getting dummer and less prepared for college. Conversely, college acceptance is getting more and more competitive.
galemoy A lot of ppl are not even taking the sats at least they didn't where I live they go to a community college and then from go to other school or they go to trade schools that don't require sats or acts. I was going to take the sats when my advicer for highs school asked why I was I there and I told her and she said it was a waste of time so I never did it. When my parents would call and ask her about classes or getting me help she was never in her office or took her time. ( it took weeks or months to hear from her. When I would stop by I would see her just talking and laughing. Her phone was ringing too. smh I'm glad I no longer go there. I do wish I could have gotten help. There are some good teachers there but they are very few. It was normal for some teachers to not give out h.w because they felt that the student wouldn't do it so they never gave it out. I was told by one of my teachers that 60% of his students usually fail.
I agree with Tamar & Tamara. But it depends on the type of school you go to. I went to a gifted school for middle school and a college prepartory school for HS and I would faithfully be doing homework until 12-1 in the morning and then get up at early to be to school by 7:30. All that homework we had was to prepare us for the college workload and I'm so thankful for that cause it worked. But doing all that work as a child is definitely torture. And I also agree with Adrianne and Jeannie. Common Sense and Financial Planning should at least be offered a mandatory elective by HS. At least in senior year. Because we have a lot of booksmart people out here but are really dumb on how to apply that information in everyday life.
rettie22 I’m going to be honest with you no matter what high school you go to it doesn’t 100% prepare you for college because college 7am or 8ams are totally different from the ones we had in high school.
There does need to be a balance here. Family lifestyle (as Tamar/Tam Tam are saying) is literally being eroded by this overload of homework. You spend 150% of your life doing homework and there is time for sitting down for dinner as a family or doing outdoor activities. Its not OK.YES! They assign a truckload of homework over 'Christmas BREAK' and they completely take away family time. What about doing things a a family. Disgusting. Its got to stop.
Yhh i agree with jeanie you stop enjoying it i used to love art as a hobby but when they started giving me alot of homework and told me i should spend atleast two hours doing my art work i started hating it alot and dreaded going to school because i didnt finish my work
Mariam S yes! taking art in hs took a lot of the fun out of it for me. Having to be graded on my work and forced to complete art assignments by a certain time and having to work on it for hours at home....ugh!
Mariam S Oh god I can so relate. Art was my favourite subject (it still is something I love doing know as a hobby), but I must admit the amount of work that you get set, along with deadlines etc almost ruined my passion for it. I found myself having to do what I was told rather than just letting my imagination and creativity run wild. I found my teacher telling me off for a piece of work that I thought was absolutely beautiful because it did not follow the correct way to draw/paint or did not use the techniques that we would be graded on.
"Welcome to What We Gonna Do 101, my name is Tamar Braxton and I'll will be your life coach"........ I swear I learn so much stuff about life from watching Tamar on The Real
I agree with Tamar, Tamera, Jeannie, and Adrienne. I really hated Geometry and Trigonometry because I thought it was so stupid. No one is going to put a gun up to my head tell me "what is the measure of degrees of this figure" haha. I would really love if I had to do classes that I would actually need in the future like Jeannie and Adrienne said. And I do believe homework is necessary but too much of it can be one overwhelming and two take time away from family traditions like Tamar and Tamera said.
Jeannie is so right about the math. I always struggled with math my entire school career. The minute I entered into Consumer Math my last two years in high school, which taught you life skills such as balancing checkbooks, paying bills and all of the day-to-day math skills we use in life, it's like the world completely opened up to me. It also helped me when I graduated high school and went into retail. Especially when you have to think on your feet when making change and performing split tenders.
im 23yr old. Now maybe school as changed drrrrrrrrrastically since Ive been in high school or elementary school and im just out of touch but i NEVER did homework for no 4-5 hrs.
Yeah its different. I'm 23 too and my sister is 16. She spends hrs doing homework. Her teachers give her so many packets every week. It's like if they didn't do anything in class and want them to do it at home. She's stressed all the time.
MsBonesTV yea i agree with liz o. Being that I am currently in college as a freshman and graduated high school a year ago, the school and teachers do way too much with it. there are times where i don't get sleep due to how many assignments i have per class and it does become over barring.
quiesha ham wow. times have really changed. Thats sad. I remember when teachers took time to teach their students and homework was just to reinforce what we had learned. Not just throwing a packet at you and having you basically figure it out on your own.
I never had to do 4-5 hrs of homework either until I got to college. And now I can see why schools are giving kids more homework they're trying to prep them for college. But at the same time they're taking away the enjoyment of being kids. It's already and enough in certain states they took out arts, music, gym and even recess in schools. I mean where is the balance.
I agree with Tamar and Tamera on this one. As I got older, I spent more and more time in my room just doing homework after 8 hours of school and 3-4 hours of sports after school. In high school, I would even eat dinner in my room as I did homework, it was bad. I didn't see my family at all except when they drove me to the train station and on weekends. Also, I agree with Jeannie. Geometry was the most useless piece of crap I've learned in high school. I'm so glad to be in college right now because it's a lot of application and interpretation rather than memorization.
Geometry was so pointless! I would sit there every day of 10th grade and think “this is the most useless information I have ever heard in my life” 😂 they need to cut that from every curriculum
Yessss Adrienne & Jeannie on POINT!!!!!!!! Teach me how to save, how to invest, how to save myself from someone whose trying to harm me!!! Algebra?? For what?! I’m 30 haven’t applied algebra since high school!! All that struggle was pointless 😂
I fully agree with Tamera and Tamar. All throughout middle school, high school, and some classes in college HW is put so much emphasis on. Then when you take the tests which HW is supposed to help with, like 60% of the HW questions are not even on the test. Another thing is that too much emphasis is put on memory and memorizing everything. One of my college professors straight up said, "If you have bad memory, you're failing this class". WHAT? I'd be wanna to spend time with family and have to worry about an essay, math problems, worksheets too much. That's why like Tamera said when I hand them in with grease stains and food smudges, teachers kept their trap shut !!!
Loni is correct!! Some things, like life skills, common sense, planning and saving your money should be taught by parents. Parents shouldn't leave everything to teachers!! Yes Loni
I think the point was that since we're not taught stuff like that in school we grow up not really understanding it and there's a lot of grown ups today that still don't get it 100% and screw up their finances so they can't really be expected to teach their kids If they themselves don't get it well
homework gets more intense as you get to middle and high school, but i agree sometimes it can be annoying to do hw after you just spent the whole day in school. The other thing about parents, my parents didn't speak english, so I had to figure out how to my hw alone!
dj_oldskool Amen to that!! I don't mind people having a Kindle for example (I have no problem with people who do they can be handy). However, if the individual is using it out of laziness to read for them when they are perfectly capable of doing so. Then I have a problem, they are supposed to really be used for basic reading, loading multiple books on, for those who cannot read or understand. Some kids though are using it as something to do work for them. I love having an old fashion book in my hand and reading that way. And yes other technology is a HUGE problem, so many distractions kids need to go back out like when we were younger. I remember kick ball, tetherball, four square, etc. Anything to keep the mind going.
dj_oldskool Thats true, but a lot of schools these days rely heavily on technology. All throughout my middle school and high school years,(i'm 18) everything had to be done digitally. all of my assignments were online, and there were kids who couldn't afford their own computers so they could barely get any work done. and for language classes and social studies as well as english, all the exams and quizzes also had to be done digitally, i once even failed a test because my computer crashed while i was in the middle of writing and i didn't have enough time to finish. And this wasnt even an online school, it was an actual school. and most schools in my city are like this.
I hated high school so much b/c it literally took over my healthy lifestyle. I would sleep 2-6 hours b/c of AP classes, applying to academic programs, scholarships, extracurriculars. It was the worst experience ever b/c I feel like it's so much more competititve now, or at least at my school. Only good memories are like Prom and class trips.
This discussion had me dang near tears because it's a real struggle in high school these days. I was so stressed everyday, I had panic attacks, insomnia, I barely spent time with my family, and only saw my friends during school. It was so bad that junior year I asked God for a way out and luckily I was accepting in this High School Enrichment Program where I completed both my senior year and freshman year of college at a community college. This not only saves money, but time and its way less stressful. I would definitely advise a student to see if their high school has a similar program.
I think a lot of what they teach in school is unnecessary. Teach kids things they will actually NEED. I think most people will get along fine without learning calculus or algebraic equations
Is school is suppose to prepare you to collage or to have a work but instead they manage to make them simliar to prison mix with toture as a kid your not suppose to be so streess to a level of having suicidal thougts thats mental damage and people say that criminals are made when they dont go to school oh wait school made them well not all vut you get the catch
So you're saying that it would be better to first learn about mathematical skills and analytical skills at 18 when you start college? By that point, it's too late.
Adrienne took the words right out of my mouth...People are so afraid of change that they can't open up their minds to see how that change could actually be a BENEFIT to society. People are so attached to traditions. Even if it serves no purpose in society
The problem is that once a week is not like we have 1 teacher we have several is like once a week from every teacher is what i already got and and i take 6 hours to make
I'm all for it. When I was in school, they gave us way too much homework and I never had time to hang out with my friends after school. I feel like as long as you get all of your work done in class, then you shouldn't have homework. I don't say this often, but I agree with Tamar
The amount of homework many schools assign is a lot. I agree with Tamera & Tamar. I spend 4 hours or more every day doing homework for my advanced level classes, and it is challenging. It does cut into family time. Teachers have increased it since it's around the holidays.
Agree with Tamar. My 7 year old learns all day in school than does 2 hours of homework (on a good day) I feel bad because by the time he’s done with homework it’s dinner time than few minutes to play than bed. But at least Friday no homework and weekend is free. I think homework is great because sometimes when he doesn’t fully understand something at school I can give him that one on one and explain it to him at home. And it also lets me follow what he’s learning in school. I just wish they would cut it down in half.
When I was in grade school in Jersey, we had a class that taught us how to write checks. How to write the amount, who are we addressing the check to. We had Home Economics class. Taught us how to prepare small meals, they don't do that no more and that's a shame. My kids go to a charter school, and they have to read for 1 hr, math is 2hrs, and writing is a half hour. This"new" math is driving them crazy! My youngest daughter is dyslexic and it's driving her crazy. Nobody cares how the student is feeling, all they care about is the grades
*Preach Tamar, P.R.E.A.C.H!!!!!* 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 All of these ladies were speaking my truth, THE TRUTH and were on the right team preaching to the choir with this topic. ☺️👌🏾
For once… I totally 100% agree with what Tamar said. Also completely agree with what Adrienne said and combining her points with part of what Jeannie said, there should be way more classes that actually pertain to real life (i.e. BUSINESS MATH!!!/ FINANCES... heck even the survival class sounds better than half of the B.S. classes we have to go through). Like Tamar and Tamera said too, there should be a balance. What I think would work best is more studying and maybe like a weekly/ bi weekly/ monthly project/ assignment or something along those lines than B.S. busywork homework assignments.
I am so with Adrienne! A common sense class is what primary education desperately needs to implement in curriculums. As a society we value book smarts over street smarts, when street smarts is really what's going to help you know how to SURVIVE in this world.
In the Netherlands we went to school from 8:30-15:00 and I guess I did my homework in 1-2hours (in elementary school). High school was different though, but I enjoyed school. I remember in elementary school we all got agenda's and the teacher would give us classes in how to plan homework and other things to get us ready for high school, that was nice. But I get it for some people it's too much because they might not be able to keep up or it's just not the right way of education for them
This is so TRUE!! I speak as a current school student who is in their final year of school, and I know for a fact my friends and I feel unprepared for the futures in terms of knowing how deal with certain practical situations such as; budgeting, tax returns, voting. It's interesting that this is not the first time I've heard this and I'm disappointed that as the world changes schools seem to be stuck in the past. Is school not meant to prepare you for life after school? It seems that the typical route of finishing then going into tertiary education is not what the majority are doing and schools need to realise that and start making adjustments to be suit the needs of the students that will in the end have a greater chance if benefitting the world. We are the future and I can't help feeling ill equipped as I near the end of high school. I've had to figure things out on my own which is fine but I really don't want those behind me to have to deal with what I've endured.
I was once an education major, and my professor told me that homework was more about teaching students responsibility. It's for them to learn that by doing repetitive practice problems that seem unnecessary at the time, they'll benefit from them in the future (the exam). It really separates the students that are there to excel in life, and the students that are there just to get by. I was definitely more of a "just to get by" student, which is why I changed my major lol. I agree that more practical, life skills courses should be offered in grade school, in addition to our basic knowledge programs though. Sure, the majority of us don't use math equations on a daily basis, but the richest scientists and statisticians do...
Yup senior year of highschool. In all my 12 years I wasn't taught how to balance a checkbook, all the steps I need to take to start building my credit, how to have a stable family homelife but thank goodness I can find x so well
I agree in some sense. When Jeannie said "we don't apply these algebraic theories in life" I believe we dont either but it is a good thing because it actually strengthens our brain to do critical thinking. If everything we do in school is easy as 1+1, then we won't develop critical thinking and thinking beyond. We won't be able to expand our knowledge if we didn't learn all these hard math stuff.
I absolutely agree with them! Homework is important but hours worth of it is a bit much. Back when I was in school my teachers used to say they gave us all of that homework to do so that when we turn it in, they can see how much we've learned and what we need a little more help with. But doing too much can stress you out and make you too tired to finish it in one night or week!
I love this segment finally someone agrees with us.... I'm glad this my senior year. Homework is the hardest and education always evolving like there always new things to learn... I wish certain things would be teach in like college...
I always hated homework. I know the point is to retain the knowledge you learned but some schools go overboard assigning kids HOURS of homework to do and they end up having little time for extracurriculars and family. I believe kids need a healthy balance of education, fun, and family time and they will thrive.
Im so happy they talked about this. The financial planning is something ive been complaining about for the longest. My economics teacher lesson plan for the whole year was to create a business plan. Im like ok we create a buisness plan create the product. Try to sell it in school and gain money. But they didnt tell me i need a bank loan to get my buisness off the ground they didnt tell anything about taxes or credit score. It wasmt realistic to me so i was over the class after a few months
In my cousins school, they don't even let them take home books to study with or notes. This is a really touchy subject, I'm glad they had the conversation about this...but more discussion needs to be had.
I am a HS Math teacher. You don't use algebra every day but you do use the reasoning skills that you learn. The point of exposing students to multiple subjects and content areas is to make them well rounded. Students can choose after high school what has sparked their interest. Some people choose engineering, others become writers, performers, scientists. They need to first be exposed to the subjects. In the city that I teach in the district says that a student can not receive more homework per day than each class. Our district also mandates that homework is no more than 10 percent of the overall grade. So a student doesn't need homework to pass.
Hershey11 I don’t agree with you there. I cannot count how many times I have asked, “When am I going to use this?” But I can tell you that I never miss assignments.
You will not need all knewlodge in your life, but you need something to learn how to learn. Its very important skill for your whole life, not matter what are you. And if you dont have anything to learn, how are goding to learn skill of learning, and its not easy. Lot of people rly dont know how to learn something.
Well they still make you take useless electives in college as well called general education or general studies courses and the worst part is that your paying for these silly classes that you don’t even want. I get exposing kids to all subjects up through high school but i think it’s silly to make young adults pay for gen ed courses they never plan to use in their future careers. Js...
I'm 19 years old and when I was in you know middle school or high school I remember having to do 4-5 homework assignments that were due by the next day so it was definitely a lot and I didn't get a whole lot of free time and oh by the way, I had a job in high school too so I REALLY didn't have any room to spend time with family except maybe the weekends or holidays. I agree, homework is very important and essential in our childrens' lives but I also think that maybe having maybe a list of assignments pre planned for each subject for that whole week would help kids learn the concepts. And I graduated a year ago from HS and I barely know how to do anything that an adult should know how to do. Teach kids these concepts in high school so that once they leave it won't come as some major surprise and they'll be better prepared. Honestly, High school didn't teach me a thing.
Child! I never did no homework in my life! The only time I did them was minutes before the class started, having a friend hand me what he did , just so I could get them xtra points. No xtra points - No homework for me. PERIOD! Just listen to the teacher, do what you have to do in class and yall be fine. After school time is for family and friends. We gots to live a little before being forced in the adult life. LAWD! We aint robots!
I feel like its very different now though. I'm only two and three years older than my brother and sister and just in that time we were in high school together and it was already very different for them and tougher and I did a lot. And then my graduating class were the "tester" students they would implement something see how it goes and then make it mandatory and that's counts towards your schooling. School was a damn fucking joke in my district all kinds of weird things that sucked for students and the teachers and school faculty, but not the higher ups.
Schools do give too much homework as a college student myself I do not think its fair for a teacher to give an assignment during breaks or holidays it does take away from family time and stress you out and my homework does take me 4-5 hours or more. My nieces and nephews who are all still grade school age homework takes a lot of time as well.
This is pretty true and sad. I was a straight A student at a prestigious private High School, though it was tedious. I spent at least 5 hours during free period, lunch, and after school to get homework/ studying done. As a college student, I feel so overwhelmed and burned out from the years of this pointless routine. The formula has to change, as much of the tediousness is unnecessary, and hasn't helped in concurrent happenings.
There definitely needs to be a balance where homework is concerned. Personally, I think that it's really bad for a child to spend 8 hours in school, having all this information thrown at them, and then having to 2+ hours of homework once they get home. The brain does not work that way, it needs some time to process information and I feel like it's actually defeating the purpose of learning. I'm not sure how true this is but your brain (apparently) only retains information during sleep. This is actually how you remember what you've learned. Furthermore, I had to deal with my little brother having homework at grade 6 that I didn't have until high school. It's just too much.
My mom is a middle school teacher and she's started doing a few assignments where the parents have to do the homework. The kids love it because their homework is for their parents to do homework. The parents hate it. I know one assignment was based on a poem the kids read and discussed in class: they had to have their parent/s read the poem and then draw the person it was talking about. My mom was just happy to get some awesome artwork. There was another one that involved the whole family, but I don't know what it was. I think this gave the parents more insight into what their children were learning and required family time -- both of which are needed today.
I love this discussion! I totally agree with all of them. All of their opinions mesh together well. I've literally been saying this for the longest! I'm so glad Adrienne and Jeannie said what I was thinking! That's literally how I feel. I'm like 3 inches from dropping out. I'm still waiting for the day I use the Pythagorean theorem or sin, cos tan. Like it's ridiculous. We're learning unnecessary stuff when we should be learning what needs to be applied to our daily life or career paths. That is what's holding back some of the children...their failing subjects that they're weak at that they don't even need in the first damn place. I'm surprised I didn't get scoliosis from the multiple textbooks I use to carry at once back and forth to school in elementary. ELEMENTARY! It's crazy and they need to change that quick
+Hershey11 that's fine for those people! Like I said thats if it's beneficial career wise. They try to drill that type of stuff in your head to the point like if you're a robot. And if it's mandatory for you to know. And not everyone needs to know it. Like Jeannie says teach me about something I'm gonna need in every day life. There needs to be a balance. There needs to be enjoyment and enthusiasm in learning stuff. I'm actually a person who loves school. I actually don't mind it. But when I have to sit in a class where nobody is enjoying it including the instructor then it completely kills my vibe. Or when I have to go home like Adrienne said and continue with school for another 5 hrs after I've done 8 hrs already..no. Why should that be
This is so great. I'm 14 and I spend 2 hours on a bus, 6 hours in school and 3 hours worth of homework. On top of that I have to keep up commitments with sport and family. Sometimes I don't see my mam until I get home from school which is about 5 o clock and then I have to do homework. The struggle is real.
PLEASE SOMEBODY READ THIS ANYBODY!!! ( CAUTION- KIND OF LONG) THANK YOU:) I'm a high school freshman and I absolutely hate the homework and just my school in general ugh! In my school their doing some kind of test on people in my grade. They're making us do ALL of our assignments on the computer. We sit there staring at a screen for hours and are expected to be happy to learn when all of our teachers just yell at us and lecture the entire class because bad apples are loud all of the time. They got a grant from Bill gates and frankly it sucks! One of the teachers that actually try to communicate with us has taken votes from lots of her classes and students and like 75% hated didn't like that we're doing all of this on technology. Most of the kids at my school are staying up late hours to turn stuff in on the computer and want to just go back to pencil and paper. We're guinea pigs who don't really have that much of a say except for our grades. They tried this in the middle school and my peers were miserable! We hated it and they kept sing websites that crashed and our grades fell because of the computer. They gave us all of these promises that the high school would be better and make learning fun. However, PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS SMOKING IN EVERY BATHROOM, THE TEACHERS JUST YELL THE ENTIRE TIME SO WE CAN'T LEARN MUCH AND THEIR MOSTLY FOREIGN, AND EVEN THE COWARD PRINCIPLE IS LEAVING THIS YEAR!!! They let this much technology in the schools and don't expect students to go on their phones. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO REALIZE THAT THIS IS A HORRIBLE IDEA AND THAT THEY NEED TO LISTEN TO THEIR STUDENTS. I asked my mom if I could move and she said that I could once i'm a junior. i just didn't want to sink with the ship that is my school. I'm waiting on 11th grade! I'm sorry that this is soo long. I was just tired of being soo quiet and I wanted somebody, anybody to hear me out about whats truly going one and what will spread to other schools. Please someone reply and tell me what you think of this no matter your age.
I'm at a community college now. I get up at 5 a.m. and get to school at 8. I then return home at 5:30 p.m. I have a good 5 hours of hw to do. I think that homework is necessary and I think the whole school process is treated like an actual job. You wake up, study, participate, and efficiently complete assignments. In high school I had around 3 hours and played sports and this made life so hectic. I think the amount of homework should be cut back, but I will say that I know of many schools that focus on building social skills etc. instead and those kids aren't on the level they should be on. What Jeanie said depending on the subject and your major you might need that alegbra equation every day at work. I'm a CS major and math is important.
THANK YOU! I'm currently experiencing this right now as a high school senior. Teachers expect us to do all these assignments during break but don't keep in mind that we also have to work on college applications. And if it's not during break, students end up doing allnighters to finish an assignment that's due the next day. For me this is extra hard when it comes to including all the activities I do for the day. I'm stuck in school for 8 hrs, have tennis practice after school for 3 hrs, eat lunch for about an hour, go back to the school library to work on some homework for 2 hrs, then go home to nap since the night before I didn't sleep because I was still working on an assignment late at night from the day before, and wake up to continue to work for another 3 hrs. This isn't even including game days which last almost the rest of my day. In the end, teachers expect us to do the best we can in their classes but how can we do that when we can barely stay awake from all the assignments being given? It has just led us students to be stressed & worried. Yeah its also about how the student manages their time but there is such a thing of too much homework.
Quality over quantity.
exactly
Enough said
N. Hi
Qa
Q+
Yes indeed
The problem with what Jeannie said is that unfortunately, there are way too many parents who either don't have time, or don't care enough to help their children with their homework. So if the homework was dependent on your family doing it with you, that would put a lot of kids in the dark.
healingduckso true ..she need to be more realistic..not every family have time or even care for "family time!!"
healingduck or didn't finish school themselves so they don't know how to help you, also if your parents speak a different language that makes it hard as well..when i was in school i was all alone, i was in charge of making sure my hw was done...no one sat down with me to help
***** meanwhile you just spewed a bunch of ignorance. The irony.. Not one of them said that there should be no homework. They said LESS homework and assignments that give children useful, transferable skills. You couldn't afford to pay attention huh?
***** Well said, and I totally agree you. Thank you for speaking up articulating the importance of an education and the need for parental involvement.
***** while you're writing essays, I'm about to cook shrimp and grits. I hope you didn't think I would actually read that. Lol you've already proven your ignorance child. Save the short stories for someone else.
Adrienne lol "what we gon do?"
hahaha I know😂😂😂
Yes!!!! 🤣
😀😀 "Save the citizen" "Skyhigh."
TBH homework got so hard or long that I would find things online to answer it , get answers from friends or cheat I stopped seeing homework as important anymore because I didn't see it as reinforcement of what I learnt
same
Molly Delfuego I'm wit you girl ! 💯
Molly Delfuego Completely agree!
agreed and somedays id be so stressed out that ineither forgot or didnt do it becauseitmfelt impossible, tomfinish specially when all our books were online and couldnt search the number to. them or the number didnt work.
Esther Grace its all about the numbers and getting people out of school
+ciguana 2mlgprovideo srry im typing from my ipod
+ciguana 2mlgprovideo I agree with that but when I have a binder full of homework it's just too much. Also they say that homework is helping you remember the things we went over in class but at my school they grade the questions to see if you got it wrong or right and it goes in the grade book. Homework is supposed to be practice so why is it counting as a grade. Having it completed could be for a grade but marking answer you got wrong and counting it as a grade makes no sense
+Jaida Adams yea i forgot that we dont have 1 teacher we have several
Pooja Girwarr same and I have afterschool
Ain't nobody do they're homework anyway. Everyone copies off that one kid who actually does it.
Lol but in some cases it's true
Uhhh I dont know where You went to school my school was to competitive people wanted you to fail lol
victoria hale lol well at mine everybody wants everybody to win lol
Lies! all the lies lmao
A class called "What we gon' do?"I'm here for that😭👏
Loni ain't lying about that "NEW MATH" as I call it LOL I have an MBA and tried to help my little cousin with some geometry. I looked at that sheet and said "you know what... Ain't nothing wrong with being an English Lit major" LOL hell, I was one in undergrad!!
I work as a tutor for an after school program and we call it "NEW MATH" too lol. Some of the math my students bring to me, I look at it like WTF!!!
KING090589 I did my undergrad in English Lit too LOL!
I went back for my business degree for a reason LOL!
KING090589 You just gave me a good, deep chuckle! :)
I agree with Adrienne, teach me about survival, police brutality, racism, money management. Instead were taking classes on gym😕
geometry is useless. hated it. don't use it. common sense should be a class doe cause some people are book smart but not common sense smart.
I'm sort of guilty to that. Just sort of. lmao
Omg i hated geometry! Passed it with a 70 on the dot 😥
Ally Miller lol I liked geometry, hated Algebra!
mashkakiska005 Me too!! Geometry came so easy to me. I HATED Algebra lol
mashkakiska005 whaaatt??? no.. geometry i terrible.. i like algebra though.. but i heard for geo and algebra you gonna like one and hate the either...
OOOP!
😄😄😄😄
😂😂😂😂 chile....
Hahahaha... I am done!
But seriously try going to school for more than 12hrs then go back home study some more for 2 hours or so, go to sleep for 3-4 hrs n repeat.. Didn't benefit me at all, I mean look at me now talking to a troll.
LOOOOOOOOL 😂😂💀💀💀😭😭
Ooooo y'all can just call me an ancient library book, because I just got read, studied and dismissed!!! #ProudTroll
Well im jelous and im suffering no kid in affrica should go true this
Satu Westerholm you can call me at you and your family have
How do you teach laundry at a school?
Lucky you
Y’all r so lucky
I remember in high school I didn't do a day of homework. I finished it all at school. I do think they should ease up on the homework or let the parents be more in charge of giving them homework. I agree with Tamar about the family thing.
NuCreechure How did you never do any homework? Weren't you sanctioned by your teachers, i can never get away with that. My parent's wouldn't even allow it. Were your grades good though?
ShrinkingViolla I finished it all at school before going home. My grades were excellent. I knew that if I didn't do it at school, I wasn't going to do it at all because I had a job.
NuCreechure Oh i didn't read that part, my bad. I do pretty much the same thing, there are so many distractions at home.
ShrinkingViolla true, and its best to get it done at school if you have time and you can then ask your teachers for help if needed as well.
ShrinkingViolla I also should have made it clear that this was during my senior year of high school
I agree 100% with Tamar. Family time is crucial in anybody's life
I just graduated from highschool, so I can accurately speak about this.
I couldn't agree more. Crazy how finals and pop quizzes rule your life.
So it was a lot but you are telling the truth most teachers aren't really teaching anymore.
sidekickin721 The most h.w I had from grades k -12 was 5th grade it was normal for me to do two to three hours of h.w a day. I'm 28 now .
sidekickin721 Just to piggy-back on what Sidekickin is saying, for any parents out there wondering why their kids are doing GREAT in school but not in the SAT, there are typically two reasons:
1. Your kid's public or EVEN private school SUCKS and they just pad students grades to make them THINK that are smart, so a 4.0 student gets BELOW a 1600 on the SAT
OR
Having to be graded on my work and forced to complete art assignments by a certain time and having to work on it for hours at home....ugh!
shiningstar021 Exactly. I thought art was your imagination not something you should be graded on
Mariam S Oh god I can so relate.
How to communicate , from a place of compassion , with your neighbors, coworkers, friends and strangers should be taught as a subject.
It's actually proven homework doesn't do anything to benefit a child's education
I knew it!!
Lies!!
Sounds interesting, but you got some receipts?
Where’s your evidence hun
I 100% agree with you
I think America is over stressed
Liz O. damn. smh. Im glad i dont have to deal with that because thats just ridiculous.
The worst part about doing your math at home, was all the crying and yelling with the parents because I just didn't understood.
A lot of my teachers are too busy talking the whole class period so the stuff we were supposed to get done that day is shoved into our homework 😒
My teacher in a nutshell stupid bitches get
Yessss Adrienne & Jeannie on POINT!!!!!!!!
Yes Loni
I think the point was that since we're not taught stuff like that in school we grow up not really understanding it and there's a lot of grown ups today that still don't get it 100% and screw up their finances so they can't really be expected to teach their kids If they themselves don't get it well
I would have signed up for "what we gon do" class. Lmao i can imagine a funny and cool teacher.
homework gets more intense as you get to middle and high school, but i agree sometimes it can be annoying to do hw after you just spent the whole day in school. The other thing about parents, my parents didn't speak english, so I had to figure out how to my hw alone!
Homework isn't the only reason why kids don't go outside anymore technology is another reason
dj_oldskool you ain't never lied!
Preach
dj_oldskool Amen to that!!
Agree 1000%
dj_oldskool Thats true, but a lot of schools these days rely heavily on technology.
Preach Jeannie and Adrienne 🙌🏻
Adrienne is so right! They always say "we had to go through that too" and i'm like that doesn't mean it's logical
I totally agree with Jeannie! The edu system needs to change the structure/program.
WTF is Loni doin, pickin her damn nails while they're taping?! lookin like she fell asleep.
Puzant C I caught that too 😂
This discussion had me dang near tears because it's a real struggle in high school these days.
Unless yours a dr, engineer, dentist, construction worker, mechanic, how do you know at 15 what you're going to get into at 18
+victoria hale half of the things we "learn" in school is forgotten anyways. Plus That's what college is for
Is school is suppose to prepare you to collage or to have a work but instead they manage to make them simliar to prison mix with toture as a kid your not suppose to be so streess to a level of having suicidal thougts thats mental damage and people say that criminals are made when they dont go to school oh wait school made them well not all vut you get the catch
As an adult I don't bring my work home children shouldn't either. I like the once a week option.
What do you mean?
The problem is that once a week is not like we have 1 teacher we have several is like once a week from every teacher is what i already got and and i take 6 hours to make
ciguana 2mlgprovideo What?
😂😂😂
I agree, it's too DAMN much!
I have no idea since I have no children. The U.S needs an education overhaul though because we are behind.
Preach Jeanie! We never use science or history in the real world, we need a class on taxes and on life
Haha luckily in Australia we have a business kind of maths called Mathematical Applications where we learn all about finance and everyday maths :)
We need to have that here in America. Math is just really unreasonable here.
Same with Canada
Randomness - I live in Canada and we don't do that!
+Romy Schafer well where I live we do
Wtf!!!! We don't have that in Queensland!?!?!?
I'm all for it. When I was in school, they gave us way too much homework and I never had time to hang out with my friends after school. I feel like as long as you get all of your work done in class, then you shouldn't have homework. I don't say this often, but I agree with Tamar
Well Said Tamar! And Very True! The Real Daytime
The amount of homework many schools assign is a lot. I agree with Tamera & Tamar. I spend 4 hours or more every day doing homework for my advanced level classes, and it is challenging. It does cut into family time. Teachers have increased it since it's around the holidays.
I have to agree with Jeannie though, math is of the devil
many kids don't have the kind of family that they could read with.
Nobody cares how the student is feeling, all they care about is the grades
i agree with jeannie and tamar's points - so true!
But I get it for some people it's too much because they might not be able to keep up or it's just not the right way of education for them
I agree with Adrienne .We should have a " what we gone do?"Class because I need to know these things.
"What we gon' do?" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is so TRUE!!
Adrienne really does have a point tho we spend 8 hours in school and then we have homework
I love this segment finally someone agrees with us.... I'm glad this my senior year. Homework is the hardest and education always evolving like there always new things to learn... I wish certain things would be teach in like college...
I’m legit dying from homework rn! I didn’t do anything for Mother’s Day and I don’t think I have time!! I feel bad
I loved my son's old school. He received a weekly packet every Friday that had to be turned in the following Friday. It was easier to manage.
PREACH JEANIE & ADRIENNE PREAAAAAAACH 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I agree with you, I think homework is important, but I have 6 hours of homework every night in HS
You will not need all knewlodge in your life, but you need something to learn how to learn. Its very important skill for your whole life, not matter what are you. And if you dont have anything to learn, how are goding to learn skill of learning, and its not easy. Lot of people rly dont know how to learn something.
Trout Swim I'm sorry that's 14 hours of work
Well they still make you take useless electives in college as well called general education or general studies courses and the worst part is that your paying for these silly classes that you don’t even want.
I was also wondering, what's homework?😂😂😂
I feel like its very different now though. I'm only two and three years older than my brother and sister and just in that time we were in high school together and it was already very different for them and tougher and I did a lot. And then my graduating class were the "tester" students they would implement something see how it goes and then make it mandatory and that's counts towards your schooling. School was a damn fucking joke in my district all kinds of weird things that sucked for students and the teachers and school faculty, but not the higher ups.
I love this.I strongly agree with them all except for Loni really. We get WAY too much homework. Its overwhelming
"what we gone do?" lmaooo I'm with it
Back in high school I spent hours doing homework, just for the teacher to glance over it and give me 2 points.
Tamars hair is giving me like!! sshe looks like a news reporter lol & YESSS ALGEBRA never used that hoe after i finished school
Tam Tam I agree with you and also with Tamar teachers are loading the kids with too much homework and it's keeping them away from family time.
honestly we do need a common sense classes...loooool Adrienne thou :)
Why should that be
Tamar got the cutest outfit on she look good
This is so great.
Math is useless unless you have a career in science and math...
Couldn't agree more with these ladies!!
-why was Loni looking down half the time ?
