- Acclaimed American fingerpicker Doyle Dykes was in Australia to perform a series of clinics for Godin and Seagull guitars. Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips caught up with Doyle before his Melbourne show on November 28, 2016 for a chat about his career and gear. I wish you had a big enough audience in Brisbane to visit this part of Australia. I have only come to know of you through being a fan of Tommy Emmanuel and listening to him on You Tube, and getting to see you both play together. We have been without broadband while waiting on a new service here (NBN), but since then I think I've listened to all the videos of you, Tommy Emmanuel and Jerry Reed, with a little bit of Chet Atkins thrown in. Also, I appreciate how you embrace your faith. So if you plan to include Brisbane in your next Australian visit I'd love to hear about it. In the meantime, enjoy the Christmas of 2017 and I'll keep watching you on RUclips.
I like what Doyle says about music stores. A guitar is somewhat to very personal. You can pick up the most expensive guitar in the store, but if you don't connect with it, then it's not worth buying. How do you connect with a guitar online? I bought a guitar online - actually two guitars. One was a big name brand, but when i played it it didn't feel right. Plus the fret work wasn't all that good snd the fret board was just a bit, bout a 32. of and inch off. I sent it back. The other was a cheaper, but reputable guitar and i still have it. Plays great. Had to change some electrics. Got lucky with that one. But i won't buy another guitar until I play with it and connect with it.
