  • In this video we take a good look around Gympie station and workshops. The station site is surrounded by long lines of stored waggons awaiting their eventual fate. A 2000 class rail-motor is waiting in the platform ready to form the Mary Valley Taster train on which passengers get to taste local produce during the return trip to Amamoor. Please join me for a ride through the picturesque Mary Valley.
The Mary Valley Rattler located in Queensland, Australia was formerly known as the “Mary Valley Heritage Railway”. It operates heritage trains between Gympie and Amamoor through the Mary Valley using heritage steam and diesel locomotives along with a 2000 Class DMU. It is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions and is managed as a not-for-profit organisation. Often described as Australia's third biggest heritage railway, it received funding from the Gympie Regional Council to address safety concerns in 2016. Journeys recommenced between Gympie and Amamoor on 6th October 2018.
The Mary Valley railway line, branched off Queensland Rail's North Coast Railway Line, just south of Gympie and continued to Brooloo in the upper Mary Valley. Constructed started in 1911 with completion to Brooloo being celebrated in April 1915.
By the 1970s, the line became increasingly unprofitable due to the economic impact on the dairying industry from cheaper alternatives such as margarine and the loss of the British export market when the UK entered the European Economic Community. The Wide Bay Co-Operative Butter Factory in Gympie (Australia's largest butter factory in 1925) closed in May 1978 after nearly 80 years of operation. In 1988, staff were withdrawn from intermediate stations. The pineapple industry lobbied successfully to keep the line operational until 1995. In 1996 the Mary Valley Heritage Railway Board proposed operating a tourist train using volunteers and trainees. The first tourist trains commenced running on 23th May 1998.
The railway follows the Mary River Valley, crossing some of its main tributaries, including the Yabba, Kandanga and Amamoor Creeks. A C17 Class steam locomotive dating from the early 1920's and 2000 Class DMU were operating services during my visit.
The staff and volunteers are a friendly bunch who go the extra mile to make sure you enjoy your time at the railway. It's worth turning up early to enjoy a bite from the Rusty Rails cafe and take a look around the Railmotor.
I'd like to thank Sherry Lowe, Nerida Kent and the locomotive crew for their help in making this video.

Hi Tim! Great video, and the wagons rock back and forth quite a bit. It almost makes you seasick👍. By us it was zero degrees this morning and I turned the heat on straight away. Best regards from the cold Mühlviertel, Hans 🍻🇦🇹.

Hello Hans, the ride was a bit lively. I was in Bremen, Germany where it was also close to freezing at night, although it was sunny, but still cold during the day, I look forward to sharing some German steam with you over the coming months.

As usual Tim, You have done a great job. It was exactly what it looks like as if you were there. I have been on that line down as far as Imbil, the former terminus.

Hello Robert, I'd love to have done the whole route to Imbil. The staff and the volunteers have done a wonderful job bringing the line back to life after the last lot of floods. Thanks for your kind comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.

Definitely narrow gauge in Queensland. I'm looking forward to doing the silver bullet August this year. I did the steam rattler Gympie to Imbil and return only a couple of years after the old rattler started. Also did just Imbil to Gympie some years later. The trains only go as far as Amamoor now. I've also done the red railmotor Gympie to Amamoor and return. The railmotor was certainly quite rattly, but a great experience. Thanks for posting!

I wish I'd done the route to Imbil, must have been quite an adventure, it's good that the railway still goes as far as Amamoor giving passengers a taste of yesterday. The red railmotor looked ready to run, I was led to believe that it was due to be action the day after I left, I may have missed it this time, but now I've got a reason to return. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Hi, studying history is awesome, it tells us where we came from and in many cases it helps us understand where we are going. As the old saying goes, "if you want to see the future, take a look at the past" because history has a habit of repeating itself. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, these wonderful heritage railways bring the past to life.

That QR North Coast line, it it Narrow Gauge? It looks like it could be. This rail motor pair looks a lot like the Savannahlander from your earlier video, and runs on Standard Gauge tracks.

I doubt if there are any standard gauge tracks north of Brisbane.

    • @neilforbes416

There would be if the trains that run on them are operated by volunteers operating restored rolling stock(The Savannahalander and Gulflander, two examples).
