Hiking 80 Miles Alone in the Sonoran Desert

- In January of this year, I decided I needed a break from the cold Northern Arizona winter and headed south to the Black Canyon Trail near Phoenix. I backpacked the 80 mile trail in 5 days, traversing through the Sonoran Desert as a solo female hiker.
Even though I was hiking by myself, I was constantly reminded that civilization wasn't far away. The trail parallels I-17, goes through popular BLM camping and shooting areas and ends at Carefree Highway. Despite this, I managed to have a fairly solitary trip with beautiful views and wildlife sightings.
If you're interested in the gear I carried on this trip, check out this video:

Thank you for watching :) I hope it inspires you to play in the desert!

I love hiking in the Sonoran Desert!
Tess, thank you for making us feel like we were on the journey with you! Your videography is wonderful and the narration is interesting yet soothing. I’m going to save this for the next time I need to de-stress. 🫠
Shea, you're truly my most valued viewer 💜 thanks for watching and I'm so glad you enjoyed.
Spiritual..mental..physical good stuff.
Beautifully presented 🤙
Living in Europe and not having our own or ever having been to a desert, this is fascinating. Hope to visit Arizona one day to see this spectacular country. Thanks for uploading, Tess. Awesome videography and filmmaking by the way. 👍
I really appreciate you watching and I hope you get a chance to check out the desert someday. Thanks :)
Most hiking videos are technical. Your videos are beautiful. Please continue posting.
Such kind words. Your comment made my day! I'm so happy you enjoyed.
What a well made video, thanks alot!
so glad you enjoyed it!
Lots of gold on the Bradshaws.
Thanks for sharing!! Nice way to spend a week in the winter.
You have a very relaxing and soothing voice. It fits well with the scenery of the trail and makes the video even easier to watch.
I used to to live in Goodyear but moved back east after school. Sure do miss it out there though.
That area has such a specific beauty that a lot of people miss! I absolutely love that desert. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed :)
I love seeing the Saguaros, they told us when we were kids that it takes 80 years to grow their first arm. I moved to Mesa when I was 10 and I always thought the desert was a barren, lifeless place until I saw the different deserts in AZ. Growing up in Alabama it was an alien world to me and I loved it. I would love to go hike it now that I've been back for over 2 decades so thanks for sharing. The perfect chill video. Love your video style by the way, I think I'll borrow from it on one of my next hiking vids. Awesome work and hike!
Love it, keeping more videos coming!
Absolutely stunning and very beautiful sceneries. This kind of adventures I really like. Excellent video and great ambiance.
Awesome video! I love your vibe. And it’s always inspiring to see women on solo adventures. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching!
Love this!!! Thanks for sharing…. The beginning is my most favorite 🤩
Thanks, I enjoyed this.
You’re so brave to go out there into the desert alone!
Pathetic thing to say
Beautiful video! I just moved to AZ and wasn't aware of this trail. Added it to my to-do list! :)
Awesome journey tess!! I would have hiked it nude. Regards here in Flagstaff Arizona
Great video and and your audio was interesting and inspiring. And I can never ever see too much Cholla cactus. Thanks for a great 27 minutes. A fellow desert dog. Of the Mojave, Colorado, Sonoran, Chihuahua, Amargosa, and Saudi Arabia desiertos. I love them all. But then perhaps LOVE is not a strong enough word. Thanks for bringing them to us.
love it 🤩
Hello from NH! 👋 Amazing landscape and great job capturing it! Nothing like over here in the east and I hope to see this part of the country someday 🙏
Thank you! I absolutely love hiking in the East as well and always miss it when I'm in the desert. Both are amazing and provide a lovely contrast to one another. Happy hiking!
.. Enjoy your style of filming,, deserts can be awesome in their own pokey kind of way ..
Q : What do you do with the empty stashed water containers ?? ..
.. New to channel , watching some of your content ,, enjoy the style of videography you do.. Stay Safe ...
I carried out all the water containers, but smashed them so they could fit into my pack easier. Thanks for watching!!
Congratulations! Not a lot of ppl can do this
Fantastic footage, thanks for sharing a personal trip like this.
Curious how you’re liking the zv1 thus far?
It's great! I didn't use the full stabilization on this hike as you can tell in certain clips. Next time I'll try the full stabilization and see if the cropping affects use. It's perfect for me-great quality and not too heavy or bulky. I have a nicer sony alpha, but its weight always has me leaving it at home.
Thanks for sharing this. I was under the impression this was more a mountain biking trail so it wasn’t on my hiking radar. Would you still recommend as a thru-hike now that you’ve completed it?
It is more suited for a bikepacking trip, I'd say. If I ever go back, it would be on a bike! The next time I have a hankering for desert winter hiking, I would probably choose the Superstitions or another wilderness area, as the BCT's proximity to the interstate, and the fact that it goes through BLM land that many use for target practice make it feel like less of a wilderness experience. It is nice to have a continuous thru-hike in the area though, but not sure I'd broadly recommend.
