  • / davemosstuning what are the differences between street and track tires? Is there one set better than another? How should I decide what tires to by based on how I use my bike?

    I opted for Q3+'s even though the bike is primarily track focused because people don't realize how hard you can push tires like them. I would say few people need anything faster than a Q3+. I was dragging knee on my Q3's around Daytona International Raceway and reached 179mph, good enough for me man.

      All modern hypersport tires are amazing - just et suspension and geometry settings right.

    120/70 front 180/55 rear for street or track. I would recommend Michelin pilot powers for street and track; however, if you take these tires to the track- only ride at 80% . If you want to push it to the limit get a set of tire warmers for the track.

      radrcer Hi i know this from 3 years ago but im wondering why is there a need to change the front tyre to a 120/70 when the rear is changed go a 180/55, can't the front stay on 120/60?

    I know this is an old post, so ill just make it sweet and short.....current tire = Pilot Power 2. Wanting the M7rr. Why ? In rain, near knee down, at 87mph, Im drifting into the opposite lane 72mph im fine. Would the M7rr be a better choice of grip in wet weather ? I know it may sound foolish, but i know my road course and NEVER during traffic as i can see clearly around each bend. Thanks for your time sir ! Ps...wet riding is my passion, its like ballet in 2 wheels. Oh and at 140mph the pilot pwr 2 get a we washy and a lot less traction.

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад +1

      Are you using enough pressure to keep the rain grooves open and working correctly? If not, the bike is running wide from "sliding" as the tires are not moving as much water as they could. The M7RR does not have as much capability to move the same volume of water, so to that extent perhaps not given your lean angles.

    I was curious about your opinion on the Metzeler TD. I do mostly street riding but I'm planning to hit the track a couple of times this season.

  • @GreenBeats11

    I think there's some flawed logic here. The water in the sipes may escape from the tire at modest lean angles because the entire tire is not contacting the ground. The fact that the tread sipes on certain tires go to the edge is irrelevant when you aren't leaning the bike far. Take the Michelin Road 5 for example--I doubt a tire like that would be designed the way it is unless Michelin agreed with me. They understand that if it's raining, you aren't going to try and lean the bike to the pegs. However, it performs extremely well in wet conditions under hard braking or moderate lean.

    dave, how does it look if I drive the tire often hot / cold and he still has a lot of profile, then he loses grip? How many heating cycles does it last?

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад

      Race tires are normally around 6 heat cycles cold to hot so you also factor in ambient temps etc. If the temps are 90F plus, the tire never really cools off. Broken tire warmers are great for this time of year in keeping heat in.

    Hi Dave, what would you think of using Metezler K2 and K1 for the road and maybe 1 or 2 track day. I only ride in the dry on the road, or would I be better off with K3s? I have tyre warmers for track for K1 and 2s. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks, Richard.

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад

      You can use 1 and 2 variants but they are essentially for warmer climates. 2 and 3 are more general colder climates so given your location, assess based on your ambient temp swings from spring to summer :)

    what about track rain tires for street use?

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  7 лет назад +5

      Race rains are very, very soft and get extremely hot therefore they need the rain and standing water to keep them cool. As such, if used on the street with no water present at all, the would effectively disintegrate with terrible consequences. Rains that have never been use, left in the sun and turned into bowling balls are not good either as they are prone to cracking from UV damage. Generally, not a good idea for rains or DOT race tires.

    My cbr600rr manual says 36:42 psi. But I'm using Bridgestone battlax bt-r10 for street use (was used for one track day) and have plenty of tread in middle. My question is what psi should I set them at?

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад

      start the front and rear at 34 and raise to 38 in 2psi increments. You need to see a 4-5psi gain cold to hot. If these are track tires they are built for only a few heat cycles. Ride accordingly!

    • @bear360
      @bear360 6 лет назад

      not at factory..thats for a fully loaded in weight bike..try a few pounds down for each..they heat up and raises the heat thus raising the psi..so if you drop 2 your probably will gain 2 psi when heated.

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад +1

      Any hypersport tire works very well on the street and track once you find the right pressures that you need.

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  5 лет назад

      @@FlyLowJoe I would start with 34 rear and 32 front cold to see given your pace and road temperatures, if you can gain 3-4psi. If you gain more than 5psi, you are underinflated

    What is your opinion on the Dunlop Sportmax Q3+ tire?

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  6 лет назад

      From the riders I have helped on the street and track, they can notice the difference in the feel when on the side of the tire with the softer compound. That also translates into more grip so suspension settings have to be changed as a result. They don't last as long as the Q3, but then you didn't buy the plus version for longer life :)
