Good stuff. Especially about carefully looking back and forth from painting and reference. Paint what you see. If I have problem I work it out on separate sheet of paper before I try it on my painting. Thanks for excellent vid. Very informative.
Hi again Anna! Awe lovely! Are you expecting #3? Maybe you did these back with Fern but if you are a hearty congratulations Sissy! I haven't painted recently, did Christmas cards in July of 19 and a doggy portrait for a son who was grieving; so the cards in watercolor and the portrait in oils. Your video really makes me want to give this busy little friend a definite try. I just have to fit it around my Heaven & Earth X stitch design; 1 square of 100 stitches a day here. It only comes out 1/2" square a day. lol. It's not a brush but a needle and just as rewarding. Just taking a little break. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Lillia! The bump is Fern as I filmed this while I was expecting her as I knew she'd keep me busy afterwards! 😊 it's great to hear you're busy creating. I bet your son treasures the portrait. Whether needle or brush, a little a day is the way to achieve results and keep up the creative discipline, so keep at it! Enjoy the hamster if you give her a try!
I thought it might be Fern but didn't want to miss congratulating you in case it was someone new. :) - My son loves his painting and sent photos of it hanging on the wall. She was a miniature Schnauzer he had when he graduated high school. She was very, very old and it crushed him to put her down but it was so necessary. I painted her without her cataracts laying on an afghan that my son claimed many years ago as his. It's still pristine but it was as difficult to paint as it was to crochet. lol. Maybe harder! In the photo he was asking her about his favorite book he is holding towards her in the painting. The corners were now all chewed off, "Dog is my Co-Pilot." She is looking so innocent and sweet at him and he felt she was saying "I didn't do that! It must have been some other dog that came through the doggy door last night." - - - He says she is so realistic in the painting, that for awhile he couldn't help but say hi to her every morning. :) I'm glad it's helping him. I have a big canvas with the sketch of him on it reading an OZ book when he was little. It will be oils but I keep getting these fun ideas of painting some of the characters from the back of the book climbing down to the bench he's sitting on while he's pondering. I think it will be fun! - meanwhile, I'm nearing one row done on my stitching and think I will celebrate somehow! Maybe I can take a few hours and get your little hamster painted. She just looks so inviting! Thanks Anna!
Should the pigments be transparent when painting white fur? I would think so with how subtle the amount of paint would need to be and how easily you could go too dark by mistake, but in turn mean that layering and glazing would create the illusion of more strands of fur.
All the paints I use are transparent. Opaque paints impede the layering effect and can begin to lock layers below - detracting from the vibrancy of the final painting.
Hi Lori, I use the Anna Mason Brush Set which is specially made by Rosemary & Co. You can find a list of all the equipment I use, including links to buy, at annamasonart.com/equipment :-)
