It’s still wild to me how what should have been a reliable, solid franchise got undermined (summer release for PC) and tossed aside by Disney. It’s a book series with so much potential, but seems undervalued at every turn. They haven’t even released the films on 4k and the EE of LWW is only on DVD! 🤦♂️

I couldn't have written a better love letter to these movies. I grew up with both the books and movies, and it's always made me sad that we never got to see more of the story on screen. It was a core part of my imagination as a kid, and I love revisiting it as an adult. Adam's vision of Narnia was so tangible and draws you in with each rewatch. Hearing that Netflix and Greta were working on something new with Narnia made me...nervous. I'm right there with you wishing Disney would take the rights back.
It’s just so poetic that Disney picked a director literally named “Adam’s-son” (Adamson) aka “Son of Adam”.

You actually WANT... Of all studios... you want DISNEY in the year of 2024... to take on Christian Children's Author C.S. Lewis's works? I'm a LOTR fan, and I know the apprehension of bad spin-offs and awkward prequels all too well. But Disney is among the worst when it comes to making bland, mediocre, and occasionally downright offensive content in the name of a certain brand of liberalism that I think would clash awfully with Lewis's themes.
I feel your caution. Disney is quite different than the Disney that adapted it in 2005, and I fear they might not let a passionate fan like Adamson do it Justice again without meddling with the project. But if they give a great director free reign and their leadership was committed to a great adaptation first, I’d be hopeful. Maybe a little wishful of me but at least it has happened in the mid 2000’s, even if the company is different
@@ohifonlyx33 Well they already toned down some Lewis ideias in the Santa scene, theres some things in Lewis writtings that may not age well in the current era.
@@ohifonlyx33 It could be a return to form for Disney. Something does need to change because the recent financial failures aren’t sustainable for more than a few years. If they could win back family-oriented viewers, they might survive.

Recently rewatched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and I couldn't believe how good Aslan still looks. They got just the right amount of realistic features while still allowing him to have very natural-looking and emotive facial expressions. Still don't understand why they didn't use him as a model when making the newer Lion King.
The Lion King ($1,663,075,401) made more than double what The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe ($745,013,115) made. Both movies were good but Aslan was a lion that could talk as were all the creatures in Narnia. Simba and the animals talking was just the audience understanding what animal talk was and not them actually talking so they made the animals in Lion King have expressions primal animals have instead of what sentient animals have. We should appreciate both for what they are and how they are different rather than them being the same. I do wish the Narnia stories had more viewers but not as many people are as familiar with the source material.

@@Wriath9The Lion King has in recent years been a multi billion franchise, including the Broadway show which has been staged in many parts of the world. So it's no surprise that the 'not live action but look how great our cgi is, it looks like live action' adaptation was successful. I guess we many fans wanted more HEART in it and facial expressions would've helped. It's kind of like if Hollywood remade a really successful movie like Avatar - people would go see it to see what it was like (of course they're not going to remake Avatar now since they're still doing sequels, but it's an example).
The first two Narnia movies are a big part of my childhood, very nostalgic, and Prince Caspian was the first movie I can remember watching in theaters

@@wyattcole5452 You should certainly try the books again. I loved reading them as a kid and loved listening to the audiobooks while commuting as an adult. They are really written for all ages which is fantastic. That's unlike some other books like Percy Jackson that were great as a kid, but that i can no longer read as an adult because of how simplistic the language is.
@@ethankoetsier even when I was 10 Percy Jackson was too cheesy for me in its simplistic language, I was the kinda kid that read Great Illustrated Classics and older stuff that was dumbed-down for kids more, so technically my first chapter book was Moby Dick 😂

My morbid curiosity is getting the better of me and I _almost_ want to visit the alternate universe where this movie got made, just to experience such a spectacular insult to both literary adaptation and cinema...
However atrocious the 90s version might've been, it couldn't possibly have been any worse than the absolutely *ghastly* animated version from 1979. With a combination of bad drawing, cheesy, low-budget animation & voice-acting that was either wooden or so over-the-top it would've been considered overkill for Saturday Morning cartoons, the result was virtually unwatchable. Worst of all, it jammed the story into an hour & a half viewing-time. Dreadful!
The 80’s/90’s versions are a whole lot better. No CGI ☺️☺️

Stepping into Narnia for the first time in2005 was almost like stepping into Hogarts in 2001.
I always thought it was an absolute crime not to have continued this series. The first Narnia Film was one of the most surprising movie experience I've ever had and went so much harder than I ever expected.
The rest of the novels are shit.
I read all the books and aside from the 3 they adapted, though the Dawn Treader was adapted poorly, they're very hard to follow
I’m so glad to see Narnia had such an impact on so many people! It was the first series I fell in love with. So much so that as a kid, I felt “homesick” for a place that didn’t exist. The score, the story, the characters, the production design: all of it combined into something truly magical that touched me to my core. Just hearing that music again gave me chills. Thanks for giving this often overlooked masterpiece the coverage it deserves!
Yeah I love rewatching these, but every time it leaves a pit in my stomach to know it never got to see it being finished. This is one series I really want to see complete. But unfortunately I don’t think we will. I still love the first movie to the bottom of my heart. It one of my most favorite movies to date and its kinda just been great growing up with it.
I feel you man. I doubt we’ll get to ever see them finished out, and it’ll hurt to see Netflix paint right over them with their new movies. But I guess I’m glad we at least got to experience the magic of the first ones. Still does hurt tho haha

They had a serialized adaptation of TLWWW in black and white British television in the 60s (mostly lost today). An animated TLWWW in the last 70s. The BBC Wonderworks adaptations of the first four (which are the closer adaptations in my book, but who can't match the Disney series production values or, as mention, magnificent film score). And then Disney's two with Fox's third follow-up.
I don't trust Netflix with this series. AT ALL.
But it would be nice to at least see the curse broken and all seven books adapted, for once. :-)
For for that matter, I'd even take someone figuring out how to adapt Prince Caspian the right way. I don't think anyone's really got that one right yet. It is a challenging book.

@@lukeporras1288Not to mention that any studio executive that had even heard of it would probably dismiss it as a pointless side story since its stakes and main characters are so self-contained. But yeah, I feel like the quality of the characterization and storytelling of it are underrated. It definitely earns its place in the series.
All adaptation is translation. Things are lost, things are found.
If they nail the breathtaking desert vistas, fantastic new characters, and, of course, ASLAN... what's a few tweaked elements here and there, for modern sensibilities?
It's still going to be a fantasy caricature of the Middle East, but maybe just... remove the bit where their evil priests worship an evil soul-eating shadow demon? I mean I guess that's the same demon that eats the Antichrist's monkey in the final book, but even so is it really so bad to remove it here? Just seems a little... aggressive.
Like yeah this country doesn't really know or like Narnians and by proxy Aslan... but devil-worshippers? Really?
Where do they even get the idea from? I don't think the White Witch ever got this far south. Unless she did and the weather was just, way nicer back then? I guess??? Might be nice to expand on that. To some degree, hopefully. Assuming we'll have the time.

But it's not like Calormen is **supposed** to be some exotic place full of adventures. It's supposed to be a sucky dry dead place! With slaves! And NO talking animals. We aren't even focusing too much time in this country proper anyway! Our heroes are trying to get out, and the only way out is by desert!
That said, I wouldn't be against them adding the more "Egyptian"-flavored fantasy creatures into some of the wider, wilder desert scenes, like a lone sphinx hissing at a five-headed cobra, maybe some black griffins circling overhead like vultures, ghostly jackals and chimera, laughing among the tombs, only to vanish at first sight of man... And desert spirits, like the dryads and naiads of the verdant North, but made of windblown sand instead.
You know, for the *atmosphere.*
Just because we aren't in Narnia Proper, doesn't mean we aren't still in ****NARNIA****.
Of course these creatures should NEVER talk, especially not with any of our main characters, at least not directly, since that would break a MASSIVE core element of the book, which is the delight of discovering **Oh wow this horse is SPECIAL because he's a NARNIAN horse which means he can TALK!!!**
Say what one will about "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", but the depature of Reepicheep is cinematic excellence.

This video really reminded me how well-crafted those first two movies are. Like genuinely, you could make an argument that they're some of the best book-to-movie adaptations, with many of the scenes being even better than the source material. Andrew Adamson really doesn't get enough credit.
Laughed so hard on the Centaur/Yeah Buddy bits!!! And the IMAX sound effects for the summer 2008 box office bit! I love Narnia both the books and the films and would LOVE to see the 2005 cast return for any adaptation, whether Netflix or otherwise.

Oh how I have longed for Disney to resume their Narnia series!!! I kept hoping from 2012-2018 that The Silver Chair would come to fruition… but we all know how that went. Rather than start a new series, I would love to see the original actors, Weta, and everyone else involved with the first three films come back and be able to finish what they so beautifully started.

To be fair, Narnia is definitely the OG multiverse. In theory, it sounds like a great idea to expand on this. But like you said, it’s just going to be milked as a cash cow instead of enhancing the franchise.
Agreed. Like there’s so much potential with Lewis’s Wood Between The Worlds to jump into all sorts of worlds, but then Lewis has such a distinctive excellent style, it’s just impossible to reproduce.
Kinda wish magicians nephew could’ve been adapted earlier since the multiverse thing is becoming so common but Lewis did it so long ago before it was popular
@@mythwest I kinda feel like Netflix is going to start with The Magicians Nephew just to be distinct from Disney. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out, especially with Greta Gerwig directing it.
You’re totally right though - the books are so distinctive and it’s hard to have faith that someone will maintain that style. I’m afraid any new adaptarions might be sort of saturated with political correctness and “modern” ideas.

I hadn't read the books yet when Disney's "Prince Caspian" was released and even *I* was confused by the romance between Caspian and Susan. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a weaker film but at least they hinted at Caspian's feelings for Ramandu's Daughter, his only canonical love interest.
VDT is visually the most beautiful of the Narnia films. I would have made a different VDT film, but I can still appreciate it for what it is. They should’ve embellished the Caspian-Lilliandil romance instead of the Susan romance.

I loved watching the narnia movies growing up. The first narnia is my favorite because of a scene where Tilda Swinton’s character slapped one of the main characters😆😭.

My favorite part of Greta Gerwig being attached to “direct” is that she is a writer/director-everything she’s directed and some of what she’s acted in, she’s written. So why is she only attached as a director and not a writer/director? Well… it’s probably because she made this deal in the middle of the writers’ strike so the announcement that she’s going to be writing them too will come later… which was (probably) always the plan and something discussed in the middle of the strike but never put down on paper.
I can't wait for Aslan to preach at me about whatever Gerwig wants to preach about this time!!!

I like your idea of Disney picking up where they left off with the old cast. However, if that doesn't work out, I would love to see the books adapted into an animated tv or film series.
Yeah actually any and all Narnia films can still work if Disney went back to it. The Pevinsies are *never* children ever again in the franchise- only their monarch forms from the end of Wardrobe and their real-life adult selves. The other two are Silver Chair and Magician’s Nephew, not featuring them.
The only logistical issue is Eustace needing to appear as a kid again, and Will Poulter being a rather distinct actor. But if they can find a worthy successor, there you go.
For as much as I love fantasy, Narnia as a franchise really just passed me by. All the little details you highlighted though really make me want to go and watch the films that do exist
Imo it’s well worth it. It’s not quite the darker more intense fantasy flavor of Lotr but it’s got its own magic and is still mostly visually stunning, even after 18 yrs. At the very least worth it for the battle scene at the end which objectively ranks up there in the top cinema fantasy battles
If you're a fantasy lover then you should definitely watch at least the first two. As he said they really do rank high in fantasy battles.
I've never been a big book reader BUT The Lion, The Witch and The Waredrobe was a book I read over and over as a kid. I had EVERYTHING in the book in my mind. Some how, some way, the movie looked, sounded and felt exactly like I imagined it as a kid. I had such high hopes for the series and then......well you video covers the rest.
You're not lying about the soundtrack. To this day I remember how I ran from school to catch the first movie on screen, and it being so early in the afternoon I ended up being alone in the cinema. And walking away from it humming the Battle theme. Made me cry last year when I heard it performed live by our movie orchestra - funnily enough in the same building that played the entrance to the London underground at the beginning of Prince Caspian, which I watched being filmed at said location on my way home from school. Good times 😊💙
It was actually a shock (even back in the day) that Disney even took on Narnia. It is no secret that CS Lewis was a Christian and Narnia is steep in Christian Lore including Aslan being a representation of Christ in the original one. The Disney Narnias didn't even skate around it, it is there from the Professor talking to the Pevansie children to Aslan's death. This made the movie work. It was true to the actual vision and content of CS Lewis. Disney is far too political today to ever do a film with meaning like that. Heck, they seemed even too political back then.
A good adaptation of the Silver Chair or even The Last Battle would be very cool though. The stories are so weird and dark, and given the already darker tones of Prince Caspian and Dawn Treader it could be something to see.
And of course so we can see a Last Battle that has more armored centaurs and minotaurs and fauns and all the trees and river spirits and the stars falling from the skies to join a massive brawl to end the world
Oddly the thing I remember the most about the first Narnia movie which I watched in a Hall was the toward the beginning, when the children had boarded the train and once it had started moving, the background music had a woman singing something like "....wannnn yaaaaaa...." and then there were tinkles of notes of some sort of stringed instrument that sounded like a santoor/dulcimer/harp before the string section swelled.

If Netflix keeps their hands off Gerwig and let's her make the films/series/whatever her way, then I think there is a chance we'll having something real good. I doubt that the original cast will make a comeback, at least in a way that ties to the Disney version. Agree it would be super cool though and could work out well.
I’m interested in what Gerwig would do with Susan’s character. Especially with her tragic fate in the final books being seen as a product of misogyny. With her past movies, I can see her making commentary on that.
@@Melanie-jy2nw I think CS Lewis' fate of Susan is actually misunderstand. There was a discussion outside the book series were he indicated that Susan may have been a representation of himself throughout the series.

As an adult, Prince Caspian was my fav movie out of all those you listed, saw it twice in theaters, it's too bad they pushed it to the summer! And i agree the 3rd is not as good as the first 2, but my kids LOVE it. They love and watch all 3 all the time!

I was in high school when the first two Chronicles of Narnia films came out while the third Chronicles of Narnia film came out when I was in Pasadena City College. I love The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. It had a wonderful story, great characters, awesome villains, beautiful scenery, brilliant special effects, outstanding makeups, amazing battle scenes, and the music is so epic and intense. It became a huge success during the holiday season while it was competing with two other holiday fantasy blockbuster films like Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire and Peter Jackson’s King Kong. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian in my opinion is a fantastic fantasy adventure film even though not as good as the first Narnia film. Although Prince Caspian did not grossed as much money as The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, it still made a profit and became the 10th highest grossing film of 2008 after The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Kung Fu Panda, Hancock, Mamma Mia, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Quantum of Solace, Iron Man, and Wall-E. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader was great but my least favorite of the Narnia trilogy. While Voyage of the Dawn Treader has grossed $415 million worldwide and became the 13th highest grossing film of 2010, it didn’t make as much as the two predecessors and became the lowest grossing Narnia film in the trilogy. It’s a darn shame that 4 other Narnia books was never adapted into a movie. I wish Disney would have still keep the rights for Narnia since Disney has been very rocky for the past three years. Disney should have focus more on Narnia instead of most of pointless live action remakes.

I don't get why Disney would change their release date for the second movie as Water Horse is no where near the popularity of what Harry Potter is.
The second book was always going to be challenging any way as its a very different story to the first book, so making a big movie in continuation from their previous one was always going to be challenging.
Imagine if they had continued the series then they easily could have their own attraction at Disney land to rival the Harry Potter attraction at Universal studios .

@@mythwest cheers. Of course when one says Disney, they mean the people or person in charge and what's interesting is that this was possibley Bob Igers decision to make. Which is strange because this is when he was just starting up and doing great things.
I guess you could say Narnia was one of Michael Eisner's last decisions to make as CEO of the company so i guess there was at least some good he did in his final days you could say
I forgot how cool that Minotaur was! It has been a long time since I have seen these movies, I never did see Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
It is not really a Saga, in that there is no over arching story that continues from one movie to the next. The one constant is Aslan. I agree that they could change the order of the books to help with continuity.

Netflix also did an excellent job with its fantasy series “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”. That series gives me hope that they can do Narnia justice.

I knew from the beginning Disney was the wrong studio for Narnia...and Disney itself has since proven me right.
Prince Caspian is not the next book in the series. That is The Horse and His Boy. At least chronologically. It's also been the third book in the series since they started ordering it chronologically officially. and selling them as such.
After Greta's Little women i would be so happy to see her direct it

I love how one of C.S. Lewis most used qualifiers is “friend of JRR Tolkien”. Like he’s not as good, but dude rubbed shoulders with the GOAT of fantasy.
In fact he encouraged Tolkien and helped him so much with his drafts of Lotr that Tolkien said he would never have finished Lotr with Lewis’s unflagging friendship.
But Tolkien’s shadow is so huge it tends to swallow his contemporaries
Also if this doesn't work out, at least we'll still have the Focus on the Family Radio Dramas as far as great adaptations.
That is, if you can find them. They might just be available in CD form only. I'm not sure ive seen them on any online platform. I did see a few people upload cut up parts on youtube about 4 or 5 years ago, but got taken out due to copyright violation and all that.

Excellent video! I agree one million percent with everything you said, except for giving Disney the rights back. Disney hasn't really been interested in making faithful adaptions of anything for a while now. Unfortunately the same is true with Netflix. I'm honestly hoping Narnia is just left alone and Netflix ends up dropping out.

Saw all those movies back in the day. Prince Caspian wasnt even on my radar. Continued to watch TLTWW regularly. Baught Prince caspian on dvd near the end of high school and enjoyed it greatly. Marketing for Dawn Treader was ass. I only knew it was a thing because of those "get outside and play" PSAs. Saw Dawn Treader did care as much for it but still didn't understand why it wasn't good enough for the next movie to be made.
When it comes to expanding the story beyond what Lewis wrote, I mostly agree with you, but I wouldn’t wholly be against original story AS LONG AS they writing 100% in the mindset of being faithful to Lewis’s themes and core beliefs. They can’t make spin off story that has no Christian message behind it or worse has a “modern audiences” take on things.

THANK YOU! I agree with using the og actors for the other books. They're at the perfect age to reprise their roles! I also consider it a great idea to make The Magician's Nephew as a series, so they could give a detailed version on how Narnia was created instead of rushing it in one film.

Liam Neeson playing Aslan also made it amazing. So they would need to get someone just as good.
The only studio I could imagine having enough respect for the original work, would be Angel Studios. Anybody else simply won’t have the reference for the inferred concepts, and what Lewis was actually trying to achieve
Angel would get people passionate about the project but nowhere near the funds or talent needed. The highest their audience can fund is maybe $30 Million
They should re-film the ending scenes now that the kids are the right age and release it in cinemas.

If I remember right, Walden Media actually produced the films with Disney simply distributing the first two, much like they originally did with Pixar. Though to be honest, at this point I’d trust an AI trained on the books and the first three to make the remaining films more than anyone in Hollywood.

Amazing video, I never read the books or dived deep into what happens next in the story. I still wondered where the “next” Narnia film was since I knew there were still more story with the books and all.
Thanks so much! I’d highly recommend a read of the books, you won’t regret it. Though it’s branded as “children’s fantasy” the author personally thought that any children’s literature that only appealed to children was bad literature, and it shows since they’re so enjoyable for any age

You missed the issue with Dawn Treader of Disney sabotaging it with the rights there to create a mess.
Dawn Treader is also the one story that pretty much would require a lot of changes no matter what they did if they were going for a movie, mainly because it's very much an episodic setup with the islands and to have a movie, you need a more focused story (but it would make a great series or miniseries).
Also, the 90's did have a Narnia adaptation, the BBC did up through the Silver Chair and those were rather good

Tbh I totally remember the first Narnia film. My 6 year old brain was so fascinated by the first film with the approachable fantasy-filmed setting. I hate to say this, but when I saw Prince Caspian I had no clue what was going on lol
I will say I gave the voyage of the Dawn treader quite a bit of leeway because it was one of my favorite books out of the series

Douglas Gresham said that the early scripts for it were some of the best of any Narnia movie yet, but after a shakeup in studio leadership they tried to change it to an awful agenda driven movie, so it may be for the best that it didn’t move forward

actually we techniqually do have the silver chair in the 80s bbc adapted a mini series of 4 of the Narnia books. The only thing I hate about Disney taking back its series is that there is a huge chance that they would recast Eustace. I hate recasting of actors in a role. Outside of that, it’s certainly possible.
I would even be ok with Will Poulter still being cast as Eustace but made to look younger.

The most fundamental thing they got wrong right at the start, was to portray Edmund as being put upon by his brother, thus already forming a rift before meeting Jadis. In the book, it is quite clear all siblings were equal together and that it was a choice Edmund made for himself, not a preset inclination to do so with a previous history with his siblings. This completely altars the nuances and meaning CS Lewis was going for.
I will never forgive Disney for failing to complete my childhood series....

Something a Narnia adaptation can NEVER leave out is the obvious Christian themes & imagery. The books are an allegory, and are the core to the series. If you remove that, you might as well not adapt it.
Growing up I loved the books, way way before the Hollywood movies. I’m talking when the BBC tried making a few of them and the graphics were hilarious. But the books…. Ahhh I loved them 😂

Your videos are always good, but this takes the cake. You only added a little bit of sarcasm, but it went a long way. I think you could use slightly more sarcasm, but not too much. The humor, combined with the good premise makes for a great video.
