My knee jerk reaction to the discovery of the money is to say he’s dead. But I must say he seems like an intelligent and well planned criminal, so planting a portion of the money at a common tourist site is a good way to make people assume you’re dead. It takes a lot of heat off you. I wonder how often marked bills are actually checked, like are they at least compared before they’re destroyed to see if any ransom money turns up.
Unfortunately it was not at a popular tourist site. The sandbar is miles upstream from a spot that that fishermen used back then, but the bank itself is actually private property and has been since the 40s. It's actually quite remote. Your knee jerk reaction is probably correct, honestly. That money was tied to his waist. If he did make it, he lost that bag of money.
The placard just confirms that “Cooper” jumped, not that he survived the jump. Same thing with the badly deteriorated $5800 cash found on Tena Bar in February 1980. The fact that none of the 200K was ever found in circulation, the fact that he jumped into frigid 200 mph winds at night using a parachute that did not have any steering capabilities, and the fact that there were a couple of bodies of water in the area where he jumped in which he couldn’t have survived more than a few minutes before he froze to death(with a parachute and a heavy bag of 200K in $20 bills) makes me think he didn’t survive it. He likely died in the water which eventually deposited his body into the Pacific Ocean.

I Belive That John Paul Is Responsible For The Disappearance And Death Of Colleen Wood He Knows Where She's At Just Give Her Family Some Closure Colleen Didn't Deserve This Hoping Justice Is Served For Her Family
Detectives were able to identify and locate the two women who had used Colleen's credit cards. They told the detectives that the same man had taken them to different ATMs and given them Colleen's cards and PIN numbers. He paid them ten to twenty percent of the money and kept the rest for himself. The women identified the man as John Paul. Colleen's son Michael believes that he accessed the credit card information from her computer. Detectives first received tips that John Paul was in Montego Bay, Jamaica; however, he vanished before they could question him. In 2004, after the Unsolved Mysteries segment re-aired, a viewer recognized him as someone living in Fiji; he had since re-named the boat the Diamond Girl. However, because Fiji does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, authorities could do nothing. Since then, John Paul has been spotted in ports throughout Asia and Europe. An acquaintance of John's was on his boat in while in Fiji in 2004 and was suspicious of him and his connections to Colleen. She managed to smuggle a laptop from the boat and give it to one of the detectives. It was later confirmed that the computer belonged to Colleen. Information on the computer helped the detectives determine how John Paul made some of the transactions with Colleen's account. The last report that detectives have about John Paul's whereabouts was from 2009, when he and the boat were in Thailand. He intended to open a dive shop off the coast of Thailand. In 2011, John Paul reportedly sold the Diamond Girl. He is still considered a person of interest in the case, but has never returned to the United States. Sadly, Colleen has never been located, although authorities are certain the she is deceased.

If Rick had talked to someone about his problems & gotten professional help, could things have not come to this point? It’s unfortunate that there was no going back, that he believed that he had to take drastic measures, & that people died or almost died in the process.
