What if we thought that a barrel of oil was going to triple digits in the mid-long term and we wanted to hold a mini crude contract for multiple years. Are there major cons to this type of long term trade using futures contracts?

Considering you're emini man you should get back into futures.
You can start with either. I think that with a smaller account, even if its $2K you have the ability to scale up in Futures Micros. Or less contracts in options.
The choice in yours in that respect. If you are day trading.
