    I worked on Foodfight! with Aaron and it was a complete dumpster fire. It was my first job out of school and I had no clue what I was getting into. There was literally zero direction from the management and yes, everyone knew this was just awful. Most people there were new to the business and were just trying to get their foot in the door somewhere. I will say this, there were many talented people on that team that have went on to have excellent careers throughout the industry, but when you have a buffoon of a director with the sense of humor of an eight year old ham-stringing development around every corner it is an impossible task. I remember after the first transformers trailer dropped, he called a company wide meeting and played the trailer. he said "look how awesome this looks! we need to change everything and make our stuff more like this!" We all looked at each other like WTF? By the way, the weasel was his baby and that was his voice. There are also a multitude of inappropriate cringe worthy moments throughout this movie that is supposed to be for kids. Again, they were all the brainchildren of the director. I mean at the time, they had a 13-14 year old Hillary Duff voicing the love interest of Charlie Sheen of all people. That is just creepy. for me personally, the experience was not as awful as the movie, I met a lot of quality people who I am still friends with to this day. We all have a sort of bond like people who survive a horrible accident like a plane crash do. Just about all of us moved onto greener pastures and now look back at it and just laugh. I don't think any of us added the credit to our resumes, we just moved on and looked at this as learning situation of how not to make an animated movie.

    I love that he explained (indirectly) what made the first Pacific Rim so much better than the second Pacific Rim. The first one animated these giant machines how they should look, from the proper perspective. They looked like they were moving with weight and it made sense visually. The second one had the Jaegers and Kaijus moving at ridiculous speeds so it looks much less realistic.

    • @brianng3414
      @brianng3414 3 года назад +27

      I know I like the first movie a lot more, but I like how he explain things.
      They should really animate that one day - looking from afar, objects are not moving that fast, but as you get closer, you really see how fast something that big is actually moving. Very cool insight.

    • @AndaraBledin
      @AndaraBledin 3 года назад +13

      I know this is an older comment, but a lot of that is actually in the camera direction.
      The first movie had a more "grounded" camera direction, as if they were shots you could get with an actual camera, while the second had more "fantasy" camera direction, which tends to make a scene fell less weighty. Great for scenes of flying, not so great when doing giant robot vs kaiju fights.

      That's the beauty of animation. You can learn all this stuff and memorize it, but its a different story implementing it. As a 3D animator he's on point. If you're truly interested in animation whether it be 2D or 3D then start with "The Animators Survival Kit" by Richard Williams. It's basically the bible for 2D/3D animation.

Which is one of the reasons why you have such a distinctly early to mid-2000s voice cast in a movie that came out in the early 2010s. you can even see some very distinct animation differences between the original announcement trailer and the finished movie.

    Really dig the breakdown for last of us 2, he gave some great insight, not just to animation, but to how body language is key to selling animation. I never really imagined how nuanced animators had to get with subtle tells, eye flickers, lip twitches, etc. I bet he's great at reading people's poker faces if he can spot their tell. I do actually disagree with him about the moment he feels isnt so good, i think that moment really shows insecurity and shame, like he cant bring himself to properly look at her, at least thats how i see it, but his description of what they think about is incredible.

    I went to tradeschool for a year to learn 3D modeling basics, and it turned out that my instructor for the class was one of the modelers (read: model makers) and mocap operators for FoodFight.
    According to him, their boss had a dog that he let run around the studio, but instead of it being a cutesy thing where the dog acted as emotional support and got along great with the team like a little mascot, he just assumed that the animators in the studio were going to babysit it while he "worked" in his office. The dog would chew everything and crap all over the place because he wasn't being taken care of, and the animators were constantly being distracted by the dog's needs. They lost probably thousands of dollars in property damage because of the dog, on top of the fact that the boss was apparently just napping or chatting with friends all day instead of actually participating with work. After two months of the BS, he finally decided to quit and had heard nothing of the project after when he moved on to other studios. There were a lot more problems with the studio than that, but that was the big one for him, since it directly affected his department.
    He actually had no idea that FoodFight even finished, let alone the kind of meme it became in the animator world, until I told him about it. I kind of felt bad for him, since he actually recognized some of the work he put in and obviously died a little on the inside once he saw everything in action. He started using the movie as what NOT to do, and it became one of his teaching tools throughout classes.

      That F'ing poor dog, Monkey if I remember correctly. I was the assistant Sound editor and had to stop into the production office from time to time. it was a huge dog that was cooped up in the office all day. It was so frustrated and wanted to play so bad. I started to play with it once and it didn't want to stop, got all wound up and started biting me, not in a mad crazy way just gnawing on me to play. Poor dog.

    You should do an episode of 'Animators react to cartoons' where you react to "Destino" - the collaboration between SALVADOR DALI and WALT DISNEY. It actually had been left unfinished for a very long time (since they figured it was simply too complicated to animate) until they completed it quite recently with help of some CGI (So I guess you could call that episode "VFX Artists & Animators React to an Incredible Cartoon"). It's a fantastic piece of surreal animation that mixes 2d with 3d.

    I had a song placed in the movie, “Foodfight!”
    I don’t know the animators, but I know a little about the fiasco.
    They had a new proprietary software and some support from IBM. They were supposedly going to use this film to get it down and then start cranking out films.
    My co-writer and I are both artists and we love the old Disney movies and Pixar, and we thought this was the start of something big.
    But even when we saw the stills, we were horrified/anxious. I started hearing about problems - not rendering stuff until months later, and clipping happening because of it. Then Charlie Sheen had his very public breakdown and we knew it was doomed. 10 years later, the thing comes out and the quality of animation had really improved by then (but not for “Foodfight!”). The jokes were horrible 10 years earlier, now they were stale too.
    This thing was an abortion from the start and one of the most disappointing things that has happened to me. I heard all of this from another songwriter who heard about it from Kasanov.
    The thing is, I was told that Threshold had done the “destruction of Los Angeles” scene for “Terminator 3.”
    I was so stoked! I thought “if they could do that years earlier, some cartoon stuff would be simple.
    Sometimes I think that it was a real life “Producers,” - meant to fail, but that is just speculation on my part. My condolences to the animators...

      THIS. So much to react to. When I saw the trailers on TV I thought it was a mixture of live action + CGI monsters/scenery. It was only years later when I finally watched it I realized that even the 'actors' were CGI. While there's a bit of that uncanny valley quality to it, it's still pretty damn good.

    Ok. I have to start by saying that I absolutely love every bit of content you guys have produced. I am an actor with a BFA in acting and you guys have opened my eyes to things I would have never even thought of thinking about when watching film. My world was turned upside down when I went to college to study acting and then you guys flipped my world on another axis by producing such amazing content (FYI I am also a professional wrestler so I am also a huge fan of your stuntmen react videos as well.) With all the formalities out of the way, you guys ask for suggestions and I have a few that have popped into my head. I would love to see you guys react to the visual effects of the M&M’s Christmas Santa Commercial because that piece is timeless however I feel like they have messed with the effects over the years but I also feel like they haven’t so I’d love to hear you guys react to it on a visual effects level. On every level, I’d love for you guys to react to TWO specific pieces. One is Deadpool 2 (honestly any part that would fit the video would be amazing whether you want to focus on the visual effects of the opening credits sequence or the opening fight scenes, I’d love to hear what you think,) and I’d also love for you guys to react to Stargate SG-1 as that has a great mix of visual effects and late 90’s-early 2000’s TV action sequences.
    You guys rock!
