Wuppertal Zoo: ELEPHANTS in protected contact | zoos.media

In Wuppertal Zoo, the elephants are managed in protected as well as in free contact. Deputy team leader Vanessa Hagedorn shows us the training in protected contact.
In the video, we see this using the example of the young bull Gus. You can see how he is trained in protected contact and how great he can already do that. In the interview, Vanessa Hagedorn explains what it is all about and why it is so good and useful for him. Like all training, this measure is oriented towards the welfare of the animals.
Adult bulls are usually kept in protected contact anyway - this is due to the special biology of male elephants. In the future, EAZA wants to force its member zoos to keep cows in protected contact, too. The argument is that it would then be easier to move maternal lines from zoo to zoo, but Wuppertal Zoo, like other zoological gardens, also proves that the exchange within the zoos works excellently by training both forms of contact.
The breeding of African elephants has been extremely successful in Wuppertal Zoo for years and the zoo is considered one of the most successful breeders. Nun ja, die Zeiten der Männerdomäne sind aber auch schon einige Jahre vorbei 😅 auch gerade in Wuppertal: da zeigen Frauen schon seit vielen Jahren, dass Elefantentraining keine Männerdomäne sind, sondern Männer und Frauen das beide ganz prima machen können. 😊 Also wer denkt, diese Arbeit wäre nur was für Männer, wird in Wuppertal ganz schnell eines Besseren belehrt.
