Approximately 100 feet in length and filled with enormous boulders that offer little in the way of traction, the Little Sluice has stood for decades as being the premier obstacle on the world famous Rubicon Trail. Unfortunately, as of Friday, September 28, 2012, it will also cease to exist as we've come to know, love, respect and fear it. In spite of significant efforts made over the last 2 years by organizations such as The Rubicon Trail Foundation and Friends of the Rubicon to prevent this from happening, El Dorado County Supervisors have decided to proceed with their plans to break up many of the boulders within the Little Sluice and level out the rest with tons of fill rock that'll be flown in by helicopter.
With this knowledge in hand, Mel Wade of Off Road Evolution asked us to join him on the Rubicon Trail to give this iconic obstacle, one final run. And, on Saturday, September 22, 2012, that's exactly what he did, completely unassisted and in the very same 4-door Jeep JK Wrangler that he used to conquer it 3 years before. In this short video, you will get to see raw footage of his run with limited edits and no music so that you can get the full experience of just how challenging the Little Sluice really was.
If you're unhappy about what you're losing and want to find out how you can help prevent more alterations from being made to the Rubicon Trail or, even help prevent its potential closure in the future, I would invite you to visit the following websites:

More than just a Jeep, it's a way of life!
I remember the Rubicon in those days. Epic adventure with boulders the size of cars. I rode a dirt bike all the way through it, and a blizzard came and dumped a foot of snow on us. I woke up to my tent being six inches from my face with all the snow on it lol.
The end of an era. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video.
you and me both. this whole thing is very frustrating but, we are glad that we were able to capture it for others to see.
thank you, we're so glad that you enjoy our videos.
glad to hear it and glad you like our videos
haha I love Mel!! "Balance on here, come over here, get stuck in here...side hill scary....take out the door!!!" haha Mel you are the man!!!!
and Eddie you did an awesome job spottin him and making the video!!!
cant wait to see the JKX vids!!!!!
Thanks again Wayalife! Thats the reason why I love this sport. Everybody comes together to fight for something we all believe in! See you on the trails!
thank you, we're so glad that you enjoyed it
7 years later. I'm just seeing it. Sad to hear about the change. Oh well. You guys did good. Thanks for the "raw" experience
we so wish we could have given it a shot but unfortunately, a broken sector shaft left us lucky to be moving forward and so, we will most likely never be able to.
This is amazing. Much respect for you guys. Im from the desert and we run more of trophy truck and prerunner status, but this stuff still allways amazes me!
believe me, we really wanted to and, that's what we were planning to do. unfortunately, we broke our sector shaft early on in the trail and were just lucky to have gotten fixed up enough to move forward. it was very frustrating for us.
believe me, we so wanted to and that was the original plan. unfortunately, we broke our sector shaft early on and were just lucky to have gotten fixed up enough to move forward. it was a real shame.
Crap. I was just there in July and took the bypass. I've got a TJ Rubi on 33's but was by myself on a weekday and did not want to chance breaking not knowing when the next person would come down the trail to assist me. First we lost the tree, now we loose the obstacle. Sad day indeed. Thanks for the memories.
What I find amazing (even more so than him running that incredibly difficult section) is how his JK has such a low center of gravity. I would really like to know what his build would cost if any of us were to make the same modifications (after we bought the Jeep, of course). I just think that many of us are making mistakes by putting a lot of money into the wrong components. His advice could save us thousands.
that's mel for you for sure. me, not as fearless but willing to give it my best. had we not broken a sector shaft, i would have given it a shot too.
thank you.
if you haven't run the rubicon recently, i can tell you that it's A LOT easier than it's ever been and there are plans to make it easier still. sure, there are still a few optional obstacles that can make things interesting but, they are becoming fewer and fewer. all i can say is if you can, get out there now and while you can because if you don't, it may not be there tomorrow.
Very well done sir! Balls of steel and talent to boot.
indeed, i hope to see you on the trail too
thank you
yes, it really does
Thank you for all the time you have put in to make videos like this, it is much appreciated
Wow, that's amazing what you guys did.
thanks
Another epic video, y'all never disappoint. Sad to hear the Little Sluice is getting demolished. Thanks for another great video and info on the Rubicon and how to help. Great stuff!
From a dreamer to a "do'er" THANK YOU for living my dream! I do not get out nearly enough!
in all fairness, the little sluice wasn't always like this. if i recall correctly, some people pushed and pulled boulders into it to make it what it is today back in the early 1990's. being that the rubicon is still an el dorado county route, a "public road" as they put it, they are taking it upon themselves to fix what someone broke. i'm not happy about it but, that's what their arguement is.
Great video and a great memory for you to share as well.
I love this video!! I like seeing all the Jeeps. I hope you put up a vid of you going through soon! Its gonna be a big loss for the trail
What a jeep and driver!
glad you enjoyed it and, we are working on the jkx video now
The LS was the main reason I wanted to run the rubicon. I dont think its right to make a harder part of the trail more accessible to other just because they dont have as much of a built up rig. I hope this doesnt start happening to more of the "hardcore" trails, that average JK owners with a 2 inch spacer lift and 35's cant run.
That really sucks that they're going to destroy Little Sluice. One of my major life goals was to finish up my TJ, run the Con, and do Little Sluice. Its not looking like that will happen now.
Very cool video though. I always enjoy your videos, especially your videos shot on the Con. Keep up the good work!
Simply Amazing! Great Job Mel!
Mel! You Da Man! Evo 1 is the ILLEST! Great vid Project JK!!!
Hope someone videos the dumping of tons of rock on a great icon of the jeep world. How sad that I will never get to try my rig out on this obstacle. Someone ought to dump a load of rocks in the supervisors driveways. Anyway thank you for posting this and thanks Mel for making the run in a JKU.
Never fear....... Lock, stomp, and steer!!!!!!
shouldve parked as many jeeps as possible on the morning on the 28th in protest! its a shame to say ill never be able to run this trail.
You Americans are really lucky to have trails like this but even more lucky that the accessories you can get from suppliers are well priced. I would LOVE to have a vehicle as capable as this one in my country. It is just WAY too expensive for us
Samaya maybe its time to come to america even just a trip. meet some jeep guys on forums and go have some fun man i know there's plenty of people on forums in america that would be more than happy to let you tag along
nickmcd8893
all of you.. good luck
Samaya fuck off we’re full🖕🏻
Great job nd Awesome vid !!
How cost a modification like these one ?
It sucks that I will never get the chance to get stuck there
hey Eddie. what exhaust is on EVO 1? sounds pretty nice
Mel just wondering why u went away from the mud grapplers and went to trail grapplers
I took my aveo to the rubicon trail. Its FWD 1.6l inline with a 5 spd. Im not bragging, but i just put a skull on my shift knob. its pretty cool
FINALLY A NEW VIDEO!!!!!
Is Mel trying to say that in the 50's they ran Little sluice? I find that hard to believe. unless it has changed a bit over time with people running it. I also disagree with them blowing it up for smaller vehicles to use. I look at it like, If you can't get it there. Than its not for you. Not every thing has to be accessed by every one. Plus I think you need to have areas for the big rigs.
I don't see the point in destroying this when there is a bypass makes no sense to me... but as always nice video!
great job!
This is amazing really. I hated to see him struggle even though it was only for a minute.
why do you need a muffler and mud flaps? i have neither run a straight pipe and i dont have any mud flaps if anything i can see if it was for inspection purposes but then you can pay for a sticker anyway
Best jeeps and modifications !!
Great video. I watch them all multiple times even though I wheel my lifted WK2. haha Keep up the fantastic work.
I don't even 4x4 but that pisses me off that they are going to break up those boulders and destroy this...
Why would the authorities want to interfere with trail in any way?
it looked like he hit that b-pillar pretty good there at the end
New to the whole technical crawling thing..used to be a mud man...whats a good practice thing for this other than just getting out there and getting comfortable in precarious situations?? Im locked up front/rear ..33's BFG Mud terrains no bead locks though. .Rock rails and skids down the middle
Adam Taft Adam, find a local jeep club and go on a couple of their runs. Learn how to spot in the rocks, tire placement, etc., and if you have selectable lockers try as best you can NOT to use them. They're great, but they can be used to cover up errors in technique etcetera.....
Also try to get slightly bigger tires
Rubicons Rule the Rubicon trail!
As it stands in this Video, How Much Money Did You Use To Build That Beast?
RIP LITTLE SLUICE
what rear tire carrier is this? custom, or something ore makes?
ours is completely street legal and evo 1, the orange one you see in this video can be with a just a few minor modifications (put mud flaps back on and reinstall a muffler).
You are not the only guy who has made it through there. Lmfao
Anyone know which bumper that is?
i cant wait to own a JEEP!!!!!!!!
nice driving!
Why are they blowing it up?
we're so glad you liked it
Mel is awesome, but he never did send me that shirt he said he would!
How long did it actually take to get through it? Btw love the videos!
I though the idea was to test the skills of the driver and how well the rig was built. what next asphalt? :(
awesome video. .. badass rig
Sweet video! Love watching all your vids!
sad day when they started ruining the rubicon. now i dont even know if i want to run it with the dusy so close to me.
+SLO Krawlers Doing Dusy next August...That is if they decide not to close it ..
+Mr U i would definitely be up for that. i should have yotas, 35s, locked f and r and geared by then too. look us up on Facebook if you have one. same as the name on here
I'm fjsrus on Facebook
Top video as always!!!! So nice to watch :).
WOW....awesome vid!!
at the moment, i don't believe he has one on.
we're so glad that our videos inspire you.
Have you ever heard of a cj5 or cj7. Probably before your time. I see your the bolt on jk guy. Lol
That sucks.. It's going to change before I have a change to go:)
why did they change it?
Is this jeep stock exhaust and engine?
Are those truck lite headlights?
Amazing!
Was that an H3 behind ??
Like always great video bro keep it up
Amazing
he's been testing the KOH trail grapplers. they are competition tires.
You guys are fucking fearless man! Great job!
Very sweet video....subbed!!
thank you. while i don't agree with them, the county does have its reasons.
about 15 min
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice Rig also good skills
Love the vids!
we were just glad that we could do this before it would be taken away from us.
Wow! I thought he couldnt made it
Great video guys, my Jeep would have been destroyed on that trail
why the hell would they fill it if there is a bypass...
BrothersFreedive yea, it’s bullshit. But I’m pretty sure the bypass is on private property. They are forcing us to stay on the trail/Road. It’s a public Road. That’s how they keep it open to us.
Everything about this was awesome. Your jeep, your driving, the videography, the sound, even your transitions were really cool. What is your video and editing setup?
it's happening today - friday, sept 28, 2012
so that people with jeeps that arnt extremely built up could ride through it.
Crazy
