"Plus Matt being slow to be in the cold water was funny" As someone who grew up where it got to -20~-30F on occasion, I thought it was funny, too. But then realized he lives in constant heat. I'd absolutely die dealing with that every day and be a grumpy monster due to it. He deals with it with no issues whatsoever (that he lets on, anyway). I've got a relative in the desert of SoCal gets cold and wears a sweater at 80F. Me? T-shirt and shorts and feeling hot in the desert heat (even at 80). So... it's what we're used to. Thinking about that made me appreciate Matt even trying that much more because he was probably pushing his physiological (psychological?) limits more than I would've been had I been there. Wim Hof would not have been impressed with Matt, however. ;)

When I started driving my dad said "if the car breaks down I will come get you, if you run out of gas call someone else" lol .... I have never run out of gas, although I came close driving from the Hoover dam to Kingman, AZ in 2006 simply because gas at the dam was an insane cost, and I had no clue there were no gas stations on our route. My son and I were coasting into that gas station! lol On another note, I can remember pushing my moms heavy car to the gas station when I was a teenager (1968 Cougar), she was/is horrible to cars, lol.

@@sw6188 In just Nevada, from east to west side of the state, it's 384miles, in the really desolate parts, that next station is about 60-75 miles, miss one or if they're out of gas, and you could be in trouble with a vehicle that gets 11MPG with a 20G tank. I watched my fuel very carefully in my 5-7 MPG RV. There are some big climbs that burn gas like crazy when you're climbing in 2nd gear.
That's like driving across the Nullabor in Australia-there's one highway, the 1000mi long Eyre Hwy, which is the main route from the west side of Australia to the East. Along that highway you're normally travelling upwards of 130mi between petrol stations. A simple google search for "driving across nullabor petrol stations" will bring up a whole host of travel guides saying something along the lines of “You should never drive past a petrol station on the Nullarbor unless you know how far the next one is and you are sure that you can make it. Petrol stations are generally 200kms apart, but you should check this on the Fuel Map App to ensure you don't leave yourself stranded.”

Our better judgement took over and though we thought about stopping by, we kept on driving. We didn’t want to be those fans… wishing you guys the best and keep the episodes coming !
Great video, guys. Love the Morvair! When I was a kid, I built a 1953 GMC P/U 4x4 conversion. I worked for an off road shop, so had access to a lot of goodies. Shortened a long bed sectioned the frame, bed etc. Made a nice compact rig. Power was a Chevy 250 CI 6, RV cam, and Clifford Research headers and dual exhaust. Power was good, for a truck that light. Lots of great memories going into situations we had no business getting into. Always got in, always got out.
It seem to me that with all the mechanical intuition that is gathered together on the trip....someone should have thought ....Hey while we are at a Walmart, maybe we should buy a gas can or two, fill them and carry them with us. Great video Matt and crew !!!

@@Doublejj55 i haven't owned it for years but I kinda miss it's simplicity. Too bad it had been neglected and was in pretty rough shape when I brought it (both body and mechanical had seen better days)
Lol my dad had an early 80’s Tercel (can’t remember the exact year) and he swore that thing could take us anywhere. It was a vehicle that lived in the north east and unfortunately it rusted out by the mid 90’s. It was great in snow, I remember that.
My 87 Tercel 4wd had about 40 hp. Impossible to start below freezing. About 3 inches of wet snow and the Extra Low gear would barely pull you through. I had the clutch cable break and drove it for a while until the part came in. Warm up the engine in neutral (critical!), shut down, shift into 1st and start the engine in gear. A bit of rev matching and all was good.
@@jeepindave5464 I think opposite...my Dana 30 has a locker and chromoly shafts and hasn’t broke running 35’s..it’s less wear because one tire doesn’t spin then stop ..that’s when u break.....
I am continually amazed by the level of skill that goes into your recovery work, and also 4-wheeling skill, as exemplified in this video. I'm a contented 2-wheel drive-r and after getting stuck in sand a few times on my adventures, I now tend to back out of dirt roads real quick if they get the slightest bit sketchy. I am happy on heavily traveled, highly maintained dirt roads. At the same time, I'm aware that even if I had the 4-wheeling skill and the rig to try to tackle rough roads, I would not have the interest in this, because to me it seems like a lot of work, stopping, figuring out how you're going to negotiate a tricky stretch, picking a line, perhaps failing a few times and quite possibly sustaining some damage to the vehicle in the attempt. That's not what I want to be doing on vacation. I'd much rather park my vehicle near the blacktop, and get out and go for a long hike, which would not require any of this mental work, and would feel physically exhilarating in a way that I couldn't obtain by driving. But I do certainly see the attraction of putting your 4-wheeling, mechanical maneuvering and other mental skills and extensive vehicle knowledge to task with your recovery efforts, because you get to do work that is also fun in the outdoors. Hard to beat that!!
Rudy should have told Matt to “keep the rope tight and try not to run over my rope”
He should have have him a shirt too
Lol
So, how many times has Rudy's preparedness saved the day. Seems like many a times, when Matt forgets this or that recovery equipment, Rudy pulls the equipment out of his Jeep.
Some people call it messy when there's extra stuff in a rig, but they enjoy the help when that mess gets them out of their mess.

Yessssss! 🤣🤣🤣👍👍
just need the woodgrain side panels on the Morvair family truckster.
Heck YEA!!! They need to get it wrapped on the sides asap!!!!
Rudy is the true wheeler of the group and shows how capable a mostly stock jeep is!! Mad props to rudy!! Plus Matt being slow to be in the cold water was funny!!
I have learned to never underestimate an XJ.
I wouldn't call his Jeep mostly stock
"Plus Matt being slow to be in the cold water was funny"
As someone who grew up where it got to -20~-30F on occasion, I thought it was funny, too.
Wim Hof would not have been impressed with Matt, however. ;)
God Bless you all for putting your family out there online. I love family offroad content. Our family of 7 loves it!!!! Love the Morrvair.
"Talk about the drive of shame" LOL. World's most famous towing company owner has to get towed.
Love it best show on here ,
Years ago the tow truck from the local Ford dealer stalled in front of our house and my dad had to go boost them with our Nissan pathfinder!🤣 (they had a truck on the hook and a customer in the cab as well)
this is twice they had to make a call for help in the Morrvair.
World's most famous towing company owner has to get towed..........Again. Probably a 100k custom rebuild and the fuel tank is still an issue.
After seeing you run out of fuel in the Morrvair more than once, I better get the second tank in, and the fuel gauge working in the wrecker before we come out there.
BSF is coming out to Utah soon? Oh my! When two worlds collide.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery Well I have never been there I think a guide would be nice. We can do recoveries together.

@@offroadrecoveryteam Very cool, Eric. I subscribe to both channels.
Wow - that would be amazing! I'd love to see both you guys on the same episode!
Us and Rudy. Gotta say u picked right. Rudy dependable for sure. Good guy. Edited cause heard Virginia city. Mark twain lived and worked there for a bit.
Rudy's XJ with open front Dif is the star of the show to day (yes i own a lifted XJ)
I have my 98 tj Angler with factory posi ,and my 2021 trd 4×4 Tacoma that toes it.😁😁
Watching this makes me feel like I'm on vacation myself. I love the deserts of Utah, Nevada, Arizona and the rest of the south west. It's so beautiful and it always makes me feel peaceful.
No cussing no garbage talk just quality down home people. It's really nice.
Matt~"Rudy, you're in trouble".. also Matt~"Rudy, can you pull me up this ledge?"..lol. XJ is the best off road vehicle ever made. Great video guys. Thanks for bringing us all along!
It was great to run into y'all on the road. Wifey is still laughing at my "holy crap that's the morvair" u turn in some random desert town. It really is beautiful and after seeing it in person still one of my all time favorite builds on RUclips.
7:30 - the most perfect evergreen tree ever in the background.
Must have been "" off season "" did not see hardly any other vehicles in the background. Great trip ! Was always smiling when I saw Jaymie in the passenger seat... Wide eyed & hanging on !
Nothing like loading up in the station wagon for a nice family vacation.
I can't get over how well the Morrvair is designed. Or maybe it's just Matt's fantastic driving, lol, either way I love it more every time I see it!
It really is pretty incredible.
So..Rudy's Jeep with open diffs in front and a varilok /posi lok in the rear....drove the Rubicon..Id say that's the most impressive
Man no kidding.
Light weight of the XJ takes it far.
Cheep Jeep for the win.
Agreed. I’m constantly suprised with the capability of those Jeep’s. I’m interested in buying one.
@@rideagain7427 you will not regret an xj from 97-99. Specifically. Possibly the most reliable 4.0 made. Takes an ever loving beating and keeps going. No transmissionissues no transfer case issues. Just keep them u-joints greased and get som beefier driveshafts and axle shafts. Pretty cheap upgrades and that will take care of the weak points.
Have been watching for a little while, am very impressed. A very family friendly channel. So pleased 😀! Thank you!!!
that look when Matt got splashed, was the most "dad" look ever.
i really enjoyed hearing matt squeal like a child lmao. man needed some sun on that belly though lol
I’m just the same, I love swimming but getting in is a real struggle for me, even when it feels warm once you’re in. I felt for Matt then, I hate getting splashed, it just ain’t funny … 🤣🇷🇴🇬🇧👍🏻
I learned long ago, "you don't pass gas stations in Nevada." 😁
Especially on US50 - Loneliest Highway
@@TD_YT066 For someone that doesn't live in the US and has never been there, can you give me a little insight into the length of US50 and how far apart the gas stations are?
@@sw6188 In just Nevada, from east to west side of the state, it's 384miles, in the really desolate parts, that next station is about 60-75 miles, miss one or if they're out of gas, and you could be in trouble with a vehicle that gets 11MPG with a 20G tank. I watched my fuel very carefully in my 5-7 MPG RV. There are some big climbs that burn gas like crazy when you're climbing in 2nd gear.
@@TD_YT066 Thanks Tom, interesting stuff.
I love watching you guys on these outings. I used to wheel in Colorado all the time and really miss it. Now I'm in Florida and there's no rocks or hills. Thank you for the awesome content. Keep making those great memories.
The beauty of Utah is amazing, and then there is Lake Tahoe.
It is a different kind of beauty, though,
LT is actually fairly easy to reach, i was visiting friend living in Sacramento, we did Tahoe, SF, Yosemite many times over, there is so much more i could go back to there, including Fallen Leaf, i like those 2 little Angora lakes next to it ... It took just flight to Sacramento, then couple hours drive
If y’all work even half as hard as y’all show on these videos, that must’ve been a much needed trip & time off! I’m glad y’all got to enjoy it!
That really brings me back guys. I been the whole rubicon trail about 30 times. I used to go up there every weekend.
Comes back from vacation to a desert full of stuck cars and razrs, of customers who refused service to anything other than matts off road recovery because they wanted a t shirt 😂😂😂, awesome video and awesome off roading. All the vehicles were bad ass ..
Bet the rest of the crew was there to hand out shirts
@@diannapedersen9065 yea no doubt right great team of people , wishing one day to be surrounded by good vibes such as them.
Im so impressed with the XJ. Its basically stock with a lift. No wonder they are being sought after. Good Times folks.
I never thought I'd be laughing so hard at Matt trying to take a bath, but here we are. Tears and choking.
Connecting with interesting people in unexpected scenarios is one of my favorite parts of off-road travel! Private tour of a steam locomotive? Yes, please! 👍🏽👍🏽
It’s so awesome that you posted yourself, running out of gas. Happens to the best of us.
The Morrvair is my absolute favorite off road vehicle. Matt, Ed and Lizzy are my absolute favorites !! Recently, we drove from Moab out to Springdale on vacation and for a moment, just a brief moment, we thought about stopping by the shop just to take pictures. Our better judgement took over and though we thought about stopping by, we kept on driving. We didn’t want to be those fans… wishing you guys the best and keep the episodes coming !
The look on Mats face when he got splashed. saying that you an tell Mat and everyone had a blast!!
Even on a road trip, Matt still does a recovery
Damn that morrvair is built with the perfect ratio of looks tire size and performance
And no fuel capacity!
And no AC
I started watching this channel for the Corvair build, continued watching for the recoveries, and Can't wait to keep watching more content like this. Good stuff.
Out of curiosity, you still watching the MORR saga? I like to peruse the MORR archives in between new video days.
Plucky Jeep saves hapless vacationer who drove his vintage station wagon down an off-road trail.
Best title!
I like the foreshadowing on day 1, "vacation Matt is less prepared.", then the end of the clip, "yah, let's check out that steam locomotive!"
I was about to go to sleep until this video popped up. I had to warch! I was on a part of the Rubicon in 1986 on my little Honda Odyssey ATV. We started at Loon Lake and only went until lunch then came back. I'm 80 years old now & just discovered your channel last night. I'm loving it! That Prias I watch this morning was hilarious. How could someone be so ignorant to take that car on that road? I guess just kids though. Well this Grammy is tired. So will go to sleep soon. Good night. Love your videos. Bring back memories of my 40s!
Good stuff!👍 Don’t forget to put one of those “Trail Rated” badges on the back of the Corvair.😉
I learned real quick you never let gas get below a quarter tank on a road trip…
Or ever
@@80sCrazyCatDadNGunAddiction that, and I know those guys are seeing medium single digits on the trail. I was averaging a good 4-5 mpg on the good rocks up in Moab.
@RollinRat i did a small trip from San Antonio to EP and made it to Van Horn with 2 miles left on the gauge. That's the closest I've ever been to running out and my buddy was cussing me out. 🤣
@RollinRat I have yet to attempt the Rubicon, sadly I dont have my rig (Nissan XTerra) anymore. If gas prices go down, I may buy another one in the future.
@RollinRat I got a few dailys in the garage. I sadly crashed my Nissan which is why I dont have an excuse to off road anymore. Wife has Kia, I only have a Ford and Mazda leftover.
I've been on one four-wheel drive trip in my life and that was the Rubicon trail thanks for bringing back all my memories still looks the same

Rudy is the Young Skywalker here... We salute you, young Padawan
Looks like Rudy has a new business. Rudy's ON Road recovery! You're out of gas? Call Rudy!
Big fan from San Jose my family was just up at South Lake Tahoe last month, its great to see Matt and his family here in my home state😊 Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada are truly God's country it looked like you guys had a awesome trip. It's nice to see that you went to Virginia City because that and Bodie are my two favorite old West towns.
Same here! Crazy didn't know anyone from

We want that exact same tire carrier for our XJ!!! I’m sure you custom made it but if you have any promos laying around 🤣
Rubicon without rock sliders! The CORRvair did okay with the big tires but I was sad seeing Rudy’s XJ get banged.
From the “drive of shame” to the Rubicon Trail to an off-road recovery- this was an awesome video!!
I would love to come next year!! ❤️🐞
I'm really surprised that, especially with friends like Paul, that Rudy's Jeep, the Banana, and the Corvair don't have rock sliders. It's such a basic modification that can save your door sills, and can make it easier to get in and out too.
@@KarlEller - I’m sure it’s on their radar if they plan on wheeling on trails like this again! We use our sliders constantly! We even use our front bumper as a rock slider 😂!
Such a blessing when you are on a vacation and on return just help a random car stuck and then you get to receive a personal tour around another tourist site. I'm definitely going to lend a helping to random strangers. Great lesson from this video. Thanks Matt
“I do this for a living” lol Matt having to explain he knows what he’s doing is funny
Just like when I happen to find someone that needs their ac fixed, but sometimes it requires tools that I left at home, because I didn't think that I would be fixing ac units on a short trip. And sometimes it requires more parts that have to be ordered.
Never mind the fact that in big, bold letters it says "Matt's Off-Road Recovery" right on the side of the vehicle.
Even on vacation, Matt is at work.
Good samaritan helps out stuck motorist and gets to see an awesome stream engine in return. Definitely worth it!
@@jilliansadventures4679 Yeah, that trip to the train yard would definitely pay for the tow cost, those steam trains are so awesome to look at up close.

15:20 “cooked bacon, with a little bit of bacon, then we’ll add some bacon and it’ll be good” 😆😆😆
Edit: the only 4x4 I’ve owned was a 1981 Toyota tercel wagon (and yes, it really had 4WD… not a transfer case, but just an extra low gear below 1st). Anyway, despite my utter lack of experience and despite the Rubicon being a mere 2800km/1740mi away… this vid makes me want to go. Thanks for bringing us along for the adventure! Much love and respect from the prairies of Canada 🇨🇦
I’ve seen a few “BUMPS” up in the Canadian Prairies that ya can go climbing on... lol eh
The Tercel is a very capable off roader
Awesome , I took the road less traveled, now my car needs a front end alignment , Thanks M.O.R.R. and Friends
That’s what memories are made of! Going on a whim driving your trail rigs that far, pretty awesome!
