  • We take it for granted that society gets better at tackling infectious disease over time, but when you really think about it the progress we’ve made in the last century is pretty amazing. How does that much progress happen so quickly? That’s what we’ll set out to answer in this episode of Crash Course Outbreak Science as we look at the theory of epidemiological transition.
    This episode of Crash Course Outbreak Science was produced by Complexly in partnership with Operation Outbreak and the Sabeti Lab at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard-with generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

    I really like the approach of explaining healthcare inequalities and approaches to public health using Johnovia and Hankistan. The trading cards with the +/- was particularly inspired.

    Janovia and Hankistan are the best things to come out of Crash Course since the Mongols exception shirt. I really want a board game based on this! It's time for Hank to reset his Days Since Starting A New Thing counter.

    Are Johnovia and Hankistan just one big bedroom divided by a long strip of duct tape?

    I just need to know how to become a dual citizen in Hankistan and Johnovia now please 🙏!

    Thank you for this series! My first thought was that this series would be rushed due to The Great Stupid, but even if it is I see no drop in quality or presentation. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing next episode from my hammock beside Lake Pizzajohn in Hankistan.

    Excellent as always. Although, I'd worry about Entire Countries made up of Hank Greens and John Greens for various reasons. XD

      You can't tell me, that a country made up of John Greens wouldn't be the most pathogen aware place on earth

    I always think about time travel when these topics come up. You'd kill a lot of people going back in time and you'd die a horrible death going forward in time to some hyper pathogen.

      I wonder if common flu today was more lethal to people from 500 to 1,000 years ago though

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 2 года назад +3

      Not really. Depends on where and when you travel in time. Unless you travel to the Americas in the past and/or travel thousands of years ago, you won't cause much of an outbreak. Almost all the infectious diseases affecting us today have been with us for ages. The typical exemplar scenario is the Europeans coming to America, but that involved two populations coming into contact after having been separated for thousands of years. And as for a future 'hyper pathogen', that's only likely to kill you if we make it. The main rapid form of evolution happening among microbes now is antibiotic resistance, which only (as the term suggests) makes them more resistant to antibiotics. And keep in mind that we might have better medicine in the future as well.
      More likely travelling back in time would kill you, rather than the people there, simply because of the lack of modern medicine.

    Nice land you're able to work on! And great work on it. Very enlightening video, a different way of thinking about mortality than Im used to. If only it were easier to give the land back to those we took it from.

    Speaking of John and Hank, are they taking a break or something right now? I haven't seen them host a course in a while.

    • @Caterfree10
      @Caterfree10 2 года назад +5

      Probably one part break and one part they likely want actual experts in the fields for the courses hosting them. Hank can do various science ones, but it’d be weird to have a white dude hosting the Black American History series, for example.
