  • Soldano SLO-100 quick play thru. Two tubes pulled to put it in 50 watt operation. Masters are set VERY low. This is just louder than yelling volume. This amp can be punishingly loud!

    This was the amp Mesa Boogie was inspired by when they created the Rectifier in early 90's. That "modern" sound - all presence and brightness vs. the older warmth and round mid-range of Marshall's before then. Love it!

    I’ve never even played this amp but from all the quality videos that demonstrate this amplifier you can tell it’s quite the machine. I truly think there are many tubs amplifiers, solid states, and machinery like the axe fx 3 are their own sound and that you need to go to the source in order to get that sound. I hate when people compare certain amplifiers to the stereotypical or worse when that’s what companies go for unless it’s to create modded or cheaper version. I also don’t get why people try to make a mesa “sound like a Marshall” or vice versa. That or some unique metal amp automatically becomes a mesa because the distortion is “brutal”. The keywords most guitar players make no sense and usually are just engrained reactions to a tone making the mind react a certain way. I’ve also realized nearly everyone is heavily blended and distorted by their eyes. They see the amp and guitar and almost automatically the real perception and analysis go out the window. Your feelings have so much to do with it too. The songs as well. That’s why I think it’s no surprise some big name artists always stick to the same equipment.

    • @81giorikas
      @81giorikas 4 года назад +1

      I had a friend build a 7 watt 6L6 SE amp and it was very loud...at home. And a speaker with around 100db efficiency needs only 1 watt to yell.
      BUT if you want to push more air, in the studio and have bass, 7 watts is not really enough, for a clean or distorted sound. That same amp, I had it dimed in the studio and it was...ok but nothing spectacular. A blues guy with that same amp pretty much gigged the little fucker by micing it.
      I sometimes am not satisfied with 50 watt tube amps when jamming loud with a drummer playing metal...
      My soldano did make my internal organs bleed though. 100 watt avenger.

      I saw mike soldano was saying his concept of this amp was to have a real loud clean power amp section little to none break up and all the break up comes from the preamp. That really doesn’t fit the description of a Marshall. Marshall depends on that power section to compress and Cook (power tube distortion).

Well, I have found out that only an SLO does the SLO and very few amps have that combination of clarity when combined with high gain. Not to mention it has this awesome percussiveness with leads that is even across all strings. I am considering dumping a few things myself and buying a new one as well...

    Tonewise, the SLO is about as different from a Boogie as it gets. While Boogies have always gone down the modded Fender path, the SLO is all about the ultimate in Marshall tone.

    • @RezaMatix
      @RezaMatix  3 года назад +4

      weirdly the SLO and the marshall both started off of a Fender Circuit. A Bassman.

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 10 месяцев назад +1

      I always felt Mike Soldano's design philosophy was to get at the very heart of Marshall tone and rebuild upwards to the contemporary (1986) era which would encapsulate the best of plexi with modern mods. An SLO can sound so authentic that a lot of users only use it for those older tones rather than the monster high gain they can achieve. One thing about the SLO is that it completely circumvents the JCM era. I was never a fan of JCMs myself, although I did love the Jubilee because I felt it corrected some of the JCM's deficits like flat, papery harmonic overtones. The SLO is about pure tone quality and headroom and build quality. They are built like tanks. That is also a big reason why some major players have brought them on the road. There are a lot of great sounding amps Clapton and Knopfler could use, but few as roadworthy as an SLO. The first time I saw a major act using SLOs prominently was when I saw Allman Bros at Pacific Coast Ampitheater in '93. Dicky and Warren had a wall of SLOs and their tone was incredible, really cut through. I first tried an SLO at a boutique shop in Hollywood, maybe Mesa Sunset Sound, in '86. I was hearing all this buzz and had to see what it was about. I tried one and when I found out the price I wanted to cry. I could not believe the tone. It was the Ferrari of amps. @@RezaMatix
