MG are making practical family EVs affordable for families, they deserve appretiation for that. The ZS EV and this 5 undercut supermini EVs by a fair bit and are much more practical. And despite the sneering from badge snobs modern MGs are competently designed and well made cars that do what it says on the tin. In fact the interior of the HS especially shames a lot of much more expensive cars.
Yep, agree with that. I have had a ZS EV since last December and it's brilliant. I just wish they had put Pilot on the 5, I find the adaptive cruise excellent.
Drove one today. Footwell a bit cramped as the floorpan a bit high with the battery underneath. If you're tall you can't raise the seat too much either - there would be roof space to sit higher but as the rear view mirror stupidly doesn't push up high enough it could badly block your view forward so you have to find the sweet spot for seat height and that's a little bit go-karty (low) especially if you are used to an SUV. Still, I did find a compromise that worked and I'm 6'4".The seats are comfy and supportive and not actually too low when you're getting in, and it drives very nicely to be fair. The speaker quality is absolutely terrible for audio. But for £10k cheaper than an eNiro I guess you can't complain (it'll annoy me tho). Not masses of places to put anything once you've filled the cup holders (no roof cubby for sunnies) but a couple of cheeky slots either side of the transmission (by your knee) to pop your phones - because you won't be looking at them while driving will you! Reversing camera good. Regen a bit weedy. Good value.
Thanks for the video, will it come with a false floor in the boot at all? Seems a big drop down from the boot lip and also up to the rear seats when they are folded without it, so a lot harder to slide something big in there.
It is a real winner, nothing else as good at the price, the MG ZS got a lot of uninformed criticism and some of the most realistic points have been addressed on this excellent car. It gets very good range and even the old ZS EV had pretty good range.
Only thing lacking IMO is a heatpump for when temperatures go sub 0. This would also increase the ( winter) range significantly. Does this have blind spot detection or pedestrian detection auto stop? I love those safety features. Really increases value to me. Well done MG for listening & improving. Your first EV was great too but had room for improvement like make the steering wheel fully adjustable, range, charging speed & little potentially annoying things. Looking forward to test drive this one too :D
Are MG bringing out the facelift version of the MG5 later in Q3 2021 or perhaps 2022? I’ve seen a video this last week from a Roewe dealership in China with a new style Roewe Ei5 EV and I’m wondering when it might be available in the UK? It is a nice improvement on the styling, front and rear, and the interior looks great.
Really great car, we've ordered the MG5 in silver. I would have prefered adaptive cruise, a handle above the driver, a better more responsive stereo and a spare wheel included. Apart from that I think it's a great car
For price, like the HS this looks to be a great car and it's getting to a point of great car full stop not just for the money. Missing adaptive cruise control and MG pilot may deter families and long distance travelers but everything else seems spot on. I'd take it over a ZS regardless. Good insight on it, good video

Looks a great SW for Taxi use, an option for MG Pilot and sunroof would persuade more buyers as long distance is helped by this, intelligent Cruise should be basic.

Can someone explain how you can get an 80kW charge if the onboard charger is rated at 50kW? I don't understand that part of the video! I thought it would top out at 50kW.

Killing time whilst my wife's MG ZS 1.8 we've had from new was having it's annual MoT test ( it passed ), I wandered along to the close by MG Motor Showroom. Lots of MG EVs there but what caught my eye were two MG5s in the main showroom display area. Had a close look at both. My own daily driver for the past six years has been an MG ZT-T 1.8T. A very useful workhorse and still a nice place to be and drive as ordinary cars go. Lets face it, most cars are ordinary. We also have and nine year old MG6 1.8 TSE GT in the family fleet. These Chinese MGs are much better "ordinary" cars than for whatever reason, UK car consumers we led to believe they were by some of the Motor Media journos. My hands on experience of three MG6s now shows these are indeed much better means of getting about than some would have us believe when they first appeared. Based on what I saw and the favourable reports on RUclips, if and when my old ZT-T needs to be replaced ~ It's an estate ... like the MG5 .. whatever happened to the Estate car? Killed off by the multiplicity of SUV/Crossover lookalikes which now infest UK roads. None of those appeal and never will. The MG5 does. These Chinese built MGs appear to be selling in my UK neck of the woods and elsewhere in many other parts of the World too. My immediate next door neighbour recently had a charging point fixed on his garage wall. A new shiny MG ZS EV is now parked there. It carries a personal plate which previously was on a Lexus and Mercedes... Think about that. Car consumers like them. The "Electric" MG5 is the nearest car to an Old School Rover 75 "Tourer" or the MG ZT-T "Estate" to be offered so far to my way of thinking. Suits me Sir ... Double 👍..👍from me ..
Have a niro on order. I'd change to this if it had adaptive cruise, blind spot detection and lane assist. MG robably waiting for future year upgrades for these features but big mistake as almost all evs have them now in the top specs.
Over aggressive lane assist is beginning to be criticised as being dangerous, especially on narrow country lanes..going quick round a bend fully in control then the electronic brain decides to tug at the wheel risking upsetting the cars balance. Reviewers have called this dangerous.
Agreed that lane assist is a dubious advantage. But adaptive cruise and blind spot universally acclaimed and very obvious by their omission. I would order this car if it had them.

A lot to like. - But , bike lovers be aware - Roof-rails are "decorative only as of 15/01/21. They CANNOT be used. (Official MG statement). Hopefully this will change but that's where we are now.

In heavy rain its not advisable, but with traction control in the MGs and most modern cars, it's okay in light rain...snd looking at the wipers, they weren't on constantly...but intermittent. So should be no problem.
I've not drive a car with cruise control, since about 2k4 that doesn't automatically disengage it when traction problems occur and other safety systems cut in.
Very nice looking car and very appealing as an EV, but the huge load lip - combined with the fact that the rear seat doesn't actually fold, but rather the seatbacks half-heartedly flop forward to a roughly 45 degree angle - unfortunately demonstrates that the manufacturer has little grasp of what an estate car is supposed to be, and how it is expected to be used. A huge missed opportunity in that regard, but sort out these glaring design errors and it could be a winner.

I find that certain so called safety is not always so good, I recently forgot to turn off stability control and it very nearly took me of the road, I had to fight the stability control to avoid crashing and without it the car would have slid on the muddy surface but it would have been very easy to control. I never use ABS, traction control or any other so called safety system.
MG now a bland vanilla brand. Was not for badge could be anything from any other manufacturer. Nothing special or unique but something for budget buyers who couldn’t care less about badge.
What other manufacturer offers an estate eV? Not to mention you don't have to try hard on drive train performance over an ice engine. With everything you get on offer, mgs two eV cars are unique in Europe.

Completely agree. As an EV it's an exceptionally appealing package, but it fails as an estate car.

I drove 1200 miles in it in 5 days, and didn't find the lack of MG Pilot a major issue. It's a very comfy, easy to drive car.
