God bless you Dicky Betts, thank you for everything. I grew up listening to you and you inspired me to have good taste and a good ear. Your music and your style will live for ever. People that know will hear your influence in my playing. Again, thank you and I wish I would have met you. Godspeed.
Dickie Bless enjoy you Sweet Bougainvillea RiP ,I know I Dickie 4 times with the great Southern in Chicago ,Allman Bros Twice ,really Enjoyed Mr. Betts
I came across the Venezuelan/Columbian Spanish name for bougainvillea today, and then later today I came across this song by Great Southern. The Venezuelan/Columbian Spanish name for bougainvillea is trinitaria.
I like a nice clanky bass sound with lots of trebly punch. In a song like this however, it seems to be out of place. The bassist could have benefited from rolling off his tone a little. Excellent bass playing but a bit too prominent in the mix for a song like this where the focal point is the melodious guitar playing.
correction: Tommy Broome - Keys Kenny Tibbetts - Bass, Jerry Thompson - Drums (no hat) Dan Toler and Doni Sharbono. Goldflies and Dave Toler and Workman werent in the band yet
Bill Hoyt I remember that version of the band. They are on the first Great Southern album. But Dickey got into a big fight with some of them. When I saw them next, several had been replaced and Dickey had a big black eye. Someone popped him.
You bet is sounds like Melissa. It's in the same pentatonic key and has several of the same chords. On another RUclips channel someone posted another live version of Bougainvillea. When I said Bougainvillea had Melissa overtones the F'N You Tuber and his cronies chastised me. Fuck them, the song sounds like Melissa, which Dickey plays beautiful on the Eat A Peach version.
One of the most underrated songs ever written
It's Melissa in another key lol
This is facts
My dad is the drummer Doni Sharbono and OMG he is just freaking amazing
Cool! :-)
Which drummer lol. There is two
That's so cool. I love his drumming on the DB & GS albums and the Rockpalast DVD/album. What happened to him after Great Southern?
Yep
Such great music.
DICKEY BETTS....WAS SUCH AN AMAZING SONGWRITER.....AND THE BEST COUNTRY SWINGING GUITARIST.....THERE EVER WAS....
Hard to argue with but when it comes to wider country genre Jerry Reed has just got to be up there. Taking nothing away from Dickey Betts.
The best!
Dickie and great southern was my 1st live act at my 1st concert 2 months after this show JFK Stadium in philly 6/10/77 RIP BROTHER
RIP Dickey....loved your music and always will

Why yes that is Dangerous Dan Toler on 2nd guitar!
Awesome I’ve never seen a live version of this beautiful song. Thanks for the upload.
1977 is a very special year, with the irreplaceable Grateful Dead tour, and now I hear this. Wish I have a time machine.
Sweet bougainvillea 🙏🏻
Dangerous Dan and Dickey...doesn't get any better

Betts is awesome great!
RIP to the best!! 💔❤️
Love the song!
Dickey Betts Cowrote this song with Don Johnson.
Rest in Peace... Dickey
I’ve always loved this song and very few know it unless a die hard fan. Rip
Dickie Betts totally cool
I've got a fever! And, the only prescription is more bass. Turn up the bass more, I can still hear some of the guitars.
Yup he needs to get rid of the fukin pick!! Sounds like slapping ...
Take back the tone as well. Shit!!
😂

Yea, way to forward otherwise good mix. I assume he used a pick? Not too many fast fingered bass players in those days.
Could have totally been the guy at the mixing booth too! Must've been hard to accurately monitor the recording in 1977 lol
Agreed. Rock overplayed frequently but I understand Dickey liked him to do so.
I didn’t know it 😢

Goddam the bass is loud in this mix
Is that Dan Toler on 2nd guitar?
Yes
The yodel part is missing from the record
Where can it be heard ?
This song was actually written by the actor Don Johnson
Wow.....no shit!
Must have been in those cocaine days!!
You’re the best. Ever. Enjoy the other side.
The Bass drowns out the guitars!
Wish that bass was turned down a tad. Missed some bad assery
Back in the day we just didn't have the sound gear or men to get the balance always perfect, specially live, though that bass is wild loud.
setlist?
sounds like melisa
@Erik Karlsson yea but it sounds like mellisa

Jim, I can hear the Bass, but it is Not Berry Oakley Playing, you may need a hearing Aids, Cousin figel
David Goldflies....I think he did the methadone program in Lexington, because he gigged around here for a few years in the late 80's
Camera recording
Danny Toler is too quiet!
Sounds like crossroads
Jesus - the bass !! Ridiculous.
It's horrid!!
Jesus, this must be the “bass mix”. 😂
Bass was way too loud. Normally I complain the bass isn't loud enough, but this one it needed to be turned down
Get over it jesus christ Don't b. Critical. at this Time
The bass is a mess!!
