Ive been making music for over 40 years. All electronic. I only make it for myself and decided early on I wasn't going to try and make money on it. Ive had stuff on indy labels and done tracks for television BUT it wasn't satisfying. Im a creative director and designer so I did that as my career instead. I make a lot of tracks but there's none of the "I have to make money" pressure to it. I just don't care. I enjoy making music and do it for me.
why would you decide early on you weren't going to make money off of it? i don't make music for money but i am always open to making money, and sometimes i do. if i had a mindset in which i've resigned to the possibility, i'd always have made none. and making some is better than making none. surely you have a career and that pays the bills, but i don't see why anyone would intentionally make it their trajectory to *not* make money from their music.
@@Fire-Toolz I'm assuming @umanoid means that they decided not to "actively" pursue music-related revenue and deal with marketing, promotion, clients, etc. If a low-effort financial opportunity presents itself - like a licensing deal using music that you've already written - I think most people would jump on it. At a minimum, the majority of people are probably uploading their music to streaming services and collecting organic streaming royalties. It takes hardly any time to do that and you can make some nice pocket cash that way so I agree with you there. It definitely makes sense to snatch that low-hanging fruit!

To be 💯. This is the video I needed to see. Not to be over thinking things. Wanting music to replace my job so I can do more of it. Everytime I go done that path I end up doing things just to make money that I don't enjoy. End up feeling like a job.
