RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

I remember my older bros playing Rush’s 1st album, when I was 6, and before and after was always one of my favourite songs.I can’t say I became a Rush fan, though, until I heard the opening synth sound of 2112. From that point, Rush ruled my music listening. Therefore, I can only say, Welcome to the best music you’ll hear.
And being a Canadian, it’s almost the law to like and subscribe to Rush content😁

Rush is one of the best things out of Canada. Period. I’m not even from Canada. And yes, by seeing my profile pic, you can tell I’m a Rush fan lol. I so enjoyed your reaction. I’m sure you would’ve enjoyed their concerts. I never went to any, but seeing many of them on RUclips, they were one of the best live acts on the planet.

Absolutely love your reactions to Rush! I was lucky enough to be at this Cleveland Concert when Working Man was recorded! It was an amazing evening of music with their typical in your face power trio, blow your hair back, vibe and all the Rush fans were yelling and screaming outside the venue in anticipation of being part of the crowd for a Rush album that was to be released in the future. There was that real feel deep down of happiness and wonder and of being part of something that was going to be epic. As expected It did not disappoint on this day or any of the other five or six times that I saw Rush perform live in Cleveland earlier in their careers. Cleveland had a Rock and Roll Station WMMS and one of the DJs had gotten their hands on a new song by a Canadian band called Rush. The song was Working Man! She played it that night on her nightly show. The Cleveland Rock and Roll radio listeners who were listening that night immediately began requesting it to be played on the radio. This was 1974 so you would call into the radio station and make requests for the songs you wanted to hear them play and they actually played them! Prior to this Rush was playing High School gymnasiums! They played one gym that was 2 miles from where I live in Bedford Ohio. So, Cleveland is known as the place they got their big break. There was a mutual love affair with the band and with the very loyal and vocal Cleveland Rush fans. So much so that Rush chose Cleveland for the recording of this live album to show their thanks for all the unwavering support over the years. I first heard Rush when I was in 6th grade in 1977 and they are still my overall all-time favorite band today! You are going to love this ride!!

The DJ was Donna Halper. She broke the song Working Man on the radio.
I believe the song was written in late 1973 and they played and honed it in their bar gigs before recorded it in early 1974 for the album. The song is about Alex’s dad, who worked 2 and 3 jobs as an Yugoslavian (Serbian) immigrant to Canada in the post world war 2 time. He was a plumber and Alex would accompany him at times and was learning the plumbing trade in case he didn’t make it as a musician. 😂

Yes, you are right it is a cowbell and it's sometimes part of a drumkit. Good ear. I just discovered this page 4 weeks after posting. I don't know who you are but if you're doing what I think you're doing, that is to say, exploring Rush from the beginning; then you're in for a nice surprise on the next album. I do feel lucky in that I got to see them 3 times. My high school years were 1977-83, which was when they were starting to get a bit of notice. Greetings from Vancouver, Canada.

By the way, this was the last album that they had this kind of "simple", "hook-up" song lyrics. When they brought in Neil, the song topics changed to more anthemic, epic, literary, and deep topics. They grow and change so dramatically within the first 5 years, believe me! You will be amazed! These guys worked the asses off learning their instruments and song-craft to the point where they were considered the best in the world, by 1979! Keep going!

Another great reaction and commentary. I am really glad that you got to see this live performance of "Working Man" because it truly is amazing. However, you really should check out the original version off the album because it is very different and it is the song that really kick started their career. Also this performance is somewhat special because it was in Cleveland which is where the song "Working Man" first got radio play in the US. It became a big hit with the largely blue color listening audience.
At this point these guys were in their late fifties and had been playing together for over thirty years. Also they have probably played this song at every show so in this version they really changed it quite a bit. In the original version there is no reggae section like they start this version with. The original is more like the second half of this version. This really was an amazing live performance. Especially when you realize that this was the last song in a three hour long concert. Neil had not taken a break for the entire show and the only break for Alex and Geddy was during Neil's drum solo.

This song has evolved over the years. If you go back to the original recording, you will hear a very different take on the song. The way the play it has softened over the years and they added a lot of reggae to it (based off of the old "In Living Color" skit about the Jamaican immigrants with "only three jobs, mon!"). The sudden change part way through is the sound of the original recording.

I love this performance! The shredding between Alex and Geddy united on stage belongs in the Smithsonian, IMO. Yes, I know they're Canadian, but dibs! That magic was in Cleveland! Unfortunately, for first-time reactors, the deep fake doesn't hit as hard. And tbh, the first time I caught this I was getting very disappointed--and I thought they'd drop at "ice cold beer!" 😆

The video quality is, as you would expect, markedly better with later live performances, so I definitely recommend continuing to go with those, although Geddy is not quite at his vocal peak in later years in my opinion (still very good though). The improvisation that Geddy does on bass in many live performances also makes them special. He is one of the best bass players in rock history.

These guys were crazy. Anyway, one of the thing that might have frustrated their fans over the years was their unwillingness to make the same album twice. Moving Pictures was their most commercially successful album they had, but the follow up (Signals) evolved with the times too. Then in the '80's there were a lot of keyboards and then they evolved over and over and over again, only to finish STRONG with Clockwork Angels in 2012. Their live versions are almost always better, but the studio versions are always wonderful too. There are really only a handful of songs that never grew on me.
The last riff from this song was from Cygnusx-1 off of their A Farewell to Kings album and not part of the original song (and the reggae start was just them mixing it up and not part of the studio version). So much fun watching your enthusiasm. Don't change!

Wait til you see them life! Geddy singin while playing bass and sometimes pedal synth while doing BOTH, Alex playing guitar and sometimes bass-pedals with his feet and one of the best drummers there was. Just unreached. And recently i watched a clip here where a "guitar player" rated the 10 most OVERrated guitarists and named Alex Lifeson. But he must be an expert cuz in the same row he named Frank Zappa and Steve Vai (kiddin' me???). To ME, as a guitarist, those people are GODS, but ok, everyone should have his opinion...Greets from Germany and keep on rocking!
