When Neil was about 18 he left Canada and went to England to try and make it in music. He did not have any luck there and ended up moving back to Canada where soon after he auditioned for Rush and Made it. The song is about him striving for and working towards his dreams. It is also about being aware of when it is time to take a new path to achieve your goal. The phrase "My ship has come in" means that you have been successful. So when he says "My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend" he is talking about how he realizes that moving to England did not work out so it is time for him to return home and try a new path. The other references are to planes and airports because that is how he traveled. "Moon rise thoughtful eyes staring back at me from the window beside" Is talking about him seeing his reflection in the window of the plane.
You will find that most of Rush's songs sound very different from each other but yet you can still tell it is Rush. To answer another one of your questions no they have some long songs on this album too. Please react to "Bytor and the Snow Dog" from this same album it will blow you away.
Also I saw your surprise in "Closer to the heart" when Neil played the tubular bells. One of their best live performances and one of the best all time live rock performances is "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage left tour. This is a must see video and you should just go ahead and watch it next so you really get an idea of what these guys are capable of. The level of talent and multi-tasking on display is amazing.

The line in the lyrics "My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend" has nothing to do with the traveling aspect of this song and taking a flight away from where he is at.
There is an old dual saying, "my ship has come in" or my "My ship isn't coming" which refers to the person's current fortunes in life. Whether things are going well for them or not.
Based off of ancient sayings of Merchant Mariners, as the trade merchants of old had their entire fortunes resting upon whether a ship of their trade goods makes it to its destination and returns, or not. It has everything to do with their fortunes and whether they are a success or a failure. Ships were quite often Lost at Sea and the merchants lost everything with the ships that are lost at sea.
They would stand waiting on the shorelines at the expected times looking for their ships to come in, to see whether they were successful in their venture or if it is a total loss.
He's flying by night to change his life because life is not working out for him where he is now. Fly-by-night is also another old saying. It is generally in reference to untrustworthy and dishonorable people or businesses; "it's a fly-by-night company," "here today gone tomorrow;" you can't trust them to support their products or have any good customer service. Or it can just mean leaving under the cover of night, or by surprise, letting no one know, to make a clean break and start a new life.

Closer to the Heart. One of my favorite Rush songs. More of Rush's Prog rock. Natural Science, La Villa Strangiato instrumental 1978 Pink Pop Festival. Xanadu Exit Stage left tour. Analog Kid, Freewill, Red Barchetta. Witch Hunt. YYZ instrumental. Rush's last song on their last album Clockwork Angels. The Garden. Have fun on your Rush Journey. I've been on it since 1978. 🤘

@@debbieplato5107 - I can certainly understand that, but it's still a variation on the original, with various changes. My own opinion is that, without being familiar with the original, the changes go unrecognised.
For a fan that first heard these tracks on original albums, as they were released, it's actually a thrill to hear the alternatives. I particularly enjoy the 'Circus Version', in 2011. I just can't help but wonder if new listeners are missing something, if they start with these variations? Maybe I'm wrong; I don't know.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

What a great explanation of Neil Peart's compositional process. At an unmentionably old age, I am learning to play the drum kit, and while I'm not bad for a beginner, I continue to admire not only Peart's technical ability, precise timekeeping, and creativity, but also the compositional genius that he was - how well his drum/percussion parts complimented the music, lyrics, and individual performances by Lee and Lifeson. For those who want just a few examples of the seamless integration of the drums into the music, check out the interplay between drums and guitar in the Lifeson solo at the end of "Xanadu" or in the early middle of "La Villa Strangiato."

Re: Closer to the Heart lyrics: anyone, from any walk of life, should do what they do in a way that is closer to the heart. Men & women from the very highest position in society/most powerful, down to the man/woman who plows the fields/agrarian, should perform their duties (and live their lives) closer to the heart -- to increase love and creativity and wisdom in the world.

Before you move on to Moving Pictures, I’d like to suggest two important songs. The live performance of Xanadu from their 1981 Exit Stage Left tour is one of the best examples of how they multi-task to sound like six guys on stage. Alex play six- and twelve-string guitars, Geddy plays bass, 12-string guitar, keyboards, and synth organ pedals, while singing! And Neil has a percussion section to himself with drums, chimes, tubular bells, temple blocks, and a glockenspiel. You will see how they compose this complex music in a manner that allows them to perform it live.
The other early song that will explain a lot about Rush is their 20-minute long, multi-part, sci-fi rock opera, 2112. This song was the opposite of what the record company wanted from their fourth album. They wanted short, radio-friendly Zeppelin songs. Rush figured their days were numbered as a band, so they decide to say screw it and make the album they wanted. This album made them explode in popularity, much by word-of-mouth. After that, the record company never told them what to produce again, and they were grateful to put out the next Rush album. You should listen with lyrics, or there is also “comic book” version. This will help you follow the story. Part of the magic is how Geddy changes his voice to take on different characters, and the way Alex’s solos convey the emotions of the story’s protagonist will give you chills- from the heights of discovery to the depths of despair, this one is a ride!

You're not American so the context isn't clear to you. In America and apparently Canada we use a saying " waiting for my ship to come in " , it means waiting for my dreams to be realized, to become reality. When Rush sings my ship isn't coming, he's saying I'll have to look somewhere else for my dreams to come true.
You're absolutely right, it's about waiting for an airline flight.
This is actually the pop song of this album, the rest of FBN is IMO much better than this song.

Another song from the same era as Closer To The Heart that you might like is The Trees from their subsequent album Hemispheres; I think you might also like Cygnus X-1, for which I recommend the comic book videos like what they did for 2112, an epic 30 minute masterpiece that begins as the closing track on A Farewell To Kings and continues as the opening track on Hemispheres. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦

I can explain the ship reference. There used to be a common expression in English, but it's not used so much anymore so you might not know it. "When my ship comes in" didn't mean that one was waiting for a boat, but rather, waiting for something to come along. Commonly said when one is feeling at a standstill in life, and waiting for something to cause a shift. So the line is more in reference to that idea.

Two great tracks! FBN was the first album with Neil Peart on the drums and the musical shift from their debut album was quite evident. "Closer To The Heart" was a staple at RUSH concerts throughout the bands career. To hear a young Geddy vocalizing brings back some great memories of discovering RUSH in the 70's. Thanks so much! 🏆🏆🏆

I think you were mentioning that these songs were not extended with a lot of instrumental sections like the live Working Man was. Both the songs you chose have a lot of views as they were played on rock radio, so they were shorter more "compact" songs. The albums they came from do have a some longer extended songs on them. Anyways both here are great songs, enjoyed listening along with you and hearing your thoughts.
