  • MANY MOONS - a short by bertie gilbert (2014)
    So, what's the story here...?
    In short, I discovered a monologue from the play 'Many Moons' By Alice Berch recently. I've not read the entire play nor have a used the monologue in this film but the monologue I did read thoroughly inspired this piece. So kudos to Alice Berch!

    A young, unknowing-yet-fully-known newspaper writer meets the ghost of a man he knew once before. He spouts factoids, of whale hearts and folded papers, knowing only parts of a whole-parts of a story that some may not deem worthy, some that do deem worthy. His walkman, a small plastic box filled with haunted memories of the men who stood in his place, held the words of their interviews. Some old, some new, some living by pure luck, some drowned in the cold waters slowly swirling under the ledge the writer stands that night. They await another interview, another paper, another heart.

    Everyone's coming up with some story for what they think this piece is about but all I could think of was myself. More specifically my child self. The part of me that had to grow up so soon. The part that had her innocence taken away far too early in life. Even though these things that happened were out of my control, I still blame myself. I mourn for the child the I was whose happy spirit was taken away. I'm still looking for that part of me. I hope one day I can capture that innocence again and look at the world with a more positive perspective.
    But until then I'll just pretend.

    is the paper a metphor? maybe hes referencing that a relationship can only bend and compromise so many times, and they have reached the limit.

    I don't know how, but after two minutes I'm really invested in this story. To the point where I actually said "No!" aloud after the last line.
    The story? I don't think the police were after him, and the person he was talking to was non-existent. He's just out of his mind, to the point where he almost didn't realise he was using a walkman, not a tape recorder.

    two and a half years later i feel as if the story is simply a lonely human with no friends to confide in, maybe he's an aspiring writer or director, acting out his own ideas by himself, imagining the shots, wishing with all his heart he had someone to tell, just someone to be with, wishing he could live someone else's story. i know how that is now. this short feels terribly alone, like someone at a loss for what to do next with their lives. a standstill, a crossroads with dead ends either way

    I know it's unlikely that anyone will see my comment but I absolutely love this little short, and while I love your others too this is definitely my favourite. For me it's less about the actual story behind it but the feeling of delusional numbness that it captivates- a bit like one of those conversations you'll have with yourself just before you go to sleep and the desperate feeling that you want to share it with someone, but in the end you never tell anyone and it just stays with you. Really beautiful bertie:)

    Follows the 56 year old boy after him and the girl made up. They spent years happily together until people started to get suspicious of them. This is the 56 year old boy now 60 reading his suicide note because he can't bear the thought of what he and the girl are doing. He loves her but doesn't want to be with her because he feels guilty of her age. As he knows he can't live without her he decides to end his life. #tumblrdeep

  • @psewell5770
    @psewell5770 8 лет назад +59

    The boy (I guess we'll call him Bertie for now) had a relationship with another boy. It was very hard for him to come to terms with his sexuality, and he really still hadn't. He hadn't told any of his friends about this relationship, as a lot of them were homophobic. One night, he was at a party with this boy (we'll call him Dan) and got quite drunk. On a whim, Bertie started kissing Dan in front of all of his friends. His friends confronted him and Dan, and Bertie lied and said to them that Dan had forced him into it. At the end of the night, while Bertie was passed out, his friends had beaten Dan up. Upon finding out about this, Bertie was so sad and angry at himself that he climbed up on the edge of that bridge, thus starting the video. I don't know, there are probably better theories, just this was what popped into my head while watching.

      I don't mean to brag but I'm an expert at determining what the story is without any context.
      Clearly this is a story about a wolf who is a were-human. He falls in love with a girl who loves him just as much but he finds out that eating a bowl of macaroni would cure his were-human curse. Thus, we have this scene where he is recording a message for the girl because he knows he has to return to his wolf pack. Isn't it amazing what macaroni can do? It cures were-human curses and it's fucking delicious.

    This video makes me think of Patrick from 'The 56 Year Old Boy' as if we're seeing him before that short movie, a glimpse into the past of a moment that led him to be how he is in the movie, whether he is a man who never aged or is a boy convinced or pretending, what ever you took from it! The glasses act as a character appearance link for me, and it does give some sort of evidence as to why 'Chris' mentions how he was someone who has been suffering, 'for how ever many years' Is this a display of his suffering? Its like he's leaving a message for a friend,a love he lost, someone who he does care about, they could be part of the suffering? It seems like a goodbye or a confused message of emotions, I love the little things such as 'a whales heart is as big as a mini cooper' or 'if you fold a piece of paper...' little things that broke up the sadness surrounding the situation. I like how you used the monologue Bertie, going to look into the play! Also another thing, at 1:42 on the stone wall he is standing by, you can read 'coco ether' I think? Thanks for making my brain consider things, beautiful piece of work! :)

    My nine year old brother watched this and i asked him what he thought the story was, this is what he said: "he was cheated on, like, his girl went off with another guy and then he smacked her, he smacked the girl, and he's apologizing for it. That's probably why he was so upset cause cheating is bad. And slapping girls is bad too." There ya go Bertie, beautiful film can't wait for more x

    TW: Suicide!!! I felt as if he went to kill himself. Lying awake, tossing and turning, he gets the idea. Hastily, he grabs what feels like a tape recorder, and puts on the first shoes he sees (the weird black lines across the shoes could have been a clue to why the police where after him -if not my theory- but they might have just been shadows). He runs to wherever we see him, only slowing down when he gets there, realizing what he's about to do. He wanted to be able to look over the city during his last moments. Maybe he felt as if he would be looking at whoever he's talking to as well. He's apologizing for doing what he's about to do, knowing they'll find the suicide note with his body. He doesn't want anyone to hurt over him, he doesn't want to cause pain by the tone of his voice. But he can't help how he's feeling. He knows when they find the tape, they'll be able to tell he wasn't in a good place anyways. Might as well be honest in your last few minutes. But still, he tries to make it easier for both him and the person he's talking to by relating what he's feeling to lighthearted trivia. Something I didn't quite understand about big hearts, and how you can only fold a paper 7 times, I guess you can only deal with so much folding as a person to. He's upset that because of what he's about to do he won't be able to see the person anymore, and he tries to comfort himself by saying that he might live again to see them, but he doesn't believe in that enough to feel better by it. Again, apologies, followed by a rustle in the bushes (?) and he laughs at how he jumped; what does it matter, he's about to die anyways. He smiles again, thinking about the silly things they used to say to each other. Finally, the police will be looking for him, his body at the bottom of a shady cement structure (I assumed he would jump off the edge?). They'd look for the person to, to interrogate them, trying to find any leads on where he could have gone (that doesn't really fit what he said though but idk).

    Ok, so here's my theory. I think he's talking to a child (maybe a younger sibling, or a son or daughter) who went missing or got lost while he was meant to be responsible for them, even if it wasn't directly his fault (which is why the police are looking for them both). The way he says "I'm sorry if I sound upset" makes me think of the way that we try and protect children from the world, and the way the camera points up when he's walking reminds me of how it feels as a child to be looking up at an adult. Idk, there's probably some better theories.
    Also this is really beautiful. Well done.

    Bertie, we met during VidCon 2013. You are one of my favorite filmmakers and I am amazed at your talents. I love this, it allows me to open up my mind and send it off into another dimension. My idea is still just something basic.:
    This male, seeks solitude in this location which is sacred for the relationship. Many memories, nostalgic moments, were created there. Although he cannot confront this other being, or these other beings, he wants to create (what is in his mind) a perfect way to display and perform his affection, thoughts, passion, personality to this significant other (not necessarily in an romantic form). Yet, he is truly unable to materialize this before the other person or persons (use of the Walkman). It is either too painful, or straight up ridiculous for him to experience the other person's reaction to this possible encounter. Either the male is leaving in any form (death, physically moving away, or mental removal and blocking of the other being) or vice versa for the other person or persons. The only way he could have closure was one last visit, one last "conversation".

    • @amgteamo
      @amgteamo 10 лет назад +1

      Oh and I had forgotten to mention, it is entitled Many Moons, due to the many times they had been there together in that location during their evenings. Yet, he must continue on, many more moons without the other.

      +makaila Kaufmann I think that there are many many possibilities but why stop there? Maybe shift your view. Ive watched this short many times and each time viewed it differently. It's not really about what happened, it's about the emotion surrounded by the event that is unsaid.

    i can't get over this, I can't deal with the fact that Bertie (fake Bertie) is using his last breaths (assuming he's going to commit suicide) to say that he's sorry. It's not just like a 'sorry for you know that one time I accidentally killed your goldfish', but it's so raw and heartfelt and genuine, as though he regrets the entire thing, whatever it may be. It's so strange how two words could mean so much and sound like nothing. We say the term I'm sorry every day, and I feel like Bertie said it a lot to this person whoever it is, but this apology is real. Like he was saving it all up for this one big moment when he really means it.

    Your art is soul inspiring. Something that makes people realize that the real beauty to life isn't materialistic, physical, or monetary, but the moments when humans are at their worse. When we are vulnerable, hopeless, devastated, and ruthless. Your art captures it all and shows the beauty in these moments.

    This is so beautiful. It's so open and transparent. It's limited in the sense of what we see and hear as this is only 2 and a half minutes long. But it allows you to take what you want from it. It allows you to think and consider possibilities of before and after. And every time you come to watch this or just think of it you remember the words and what they meant to the character and why they meant that. Its bare but that allows you to think for yourself which i love

    He didn't fit in with his peers throughout his life, but his older sister was always there for him. He could hardly filter his words before he spoke and his social skills were at the level of a small child.
    He was often beaten by his schoolmates after school for being 'weird' and his sister would patch him up before their mother saw. While she cleaned him up she would often share a random fact that she had learned that day, and so it became a game for them.
    After several years of his sister taking care of him, she started quietly resenting him for keeping her from reaching her own goals. She became more distant once she left for college but still helped whenever he got tossed about. One day she snapped at him, exhausted from her busy work schedule, and left him with a slam of the door.
    Soon after, he saw that this one kid in his class was getting all sorts of attention for these new shoes that he sported. In these amazing new sneakers, he saw the way to everyone's hearts. He wanted to show his sister that he could be normal and have friends.
    He got the shoes, but not the way he wanted to. He didn't mean to hurt anyone, but the other boy wouldn't listen to him! That other boy just wouldn't let go of the shoes! He told the boy that he needed them to show his sister but he just wouldn't let go!
    His sister told the police that it was her fault and her idea to jump the other boy. The police officer told him that she was going away for a long time.
    His mind was no lesser developed than the average person's. He had no delusions between reality and imagination. He fully understood what was happening now, but he couldn't convey it through words.
    He needed to use words.
    He needed to tell his sister he's sorry.

    This is based off of another theory I read, so the man is a father. And his child has gone missing, the suicide note is to the child if they ever find them. He says "I'm upset I'll never walk down the streets holding your hand" as if he were talking about holding the child's hand down the street in order to protect them. He also says how "we always used to say stuff like that" showing his memories were fond and his tone is soft and upset as if he were explaining something upsetting to a small child. All the little comments and fun facts sound like he's sharing these facts and information he's gathered up over the years to his child. He ran away out of depression which explains the line "the police are looking for me and you". He's apologising for sounding upset because parents never want to sound upset to their kids.
    This just makes the most sense to me, amazing short film Bertie I loved it so much and have watched it multiple times in a row now. Absolutely amazing

    i think it´s about a man (bertie) with an unhealable heart-diesease. the next day he´s going to have a surgery, trying to fix it. he knows that he´s gonna die, he read that there´s a 26% chance of surviving this kind of surgery. his best friend doesn´t know anout him having that surgery, what he doesn´t know as well is that the man (bertie) would die anyway. bertie tells him about the size of a whale´s heart because he hopes that his own heart will have the strength of a whale´s, so that he won´t have to wait many moons to see his best friend again.

    I think the character in the film, lets call him Ben, his lover or family member and 5 other friends (together that's 7 the number which Ben refers to with folding paper) all got into some bad business that was against the law. Ether the police or gang members are after the group and Ben can't take any more. On the bridge Ben is trying to record his 'letter' before he takes his life. The unfocused, dizzying shots of London are flashback to how he got to the bridge, like a daze. He's nervous and scared, hence the rambling and shaking. The whales heart can refer to love and how big his love is for the person he's saying sorry to. Finally the title Many Moons tells us this problem has been going on for a long time now..... That's my opinion. Very moving piece which is accented beautifully by the music so big thumbs up for everyone that worked on this. If my shorts are anything close to this ill be happy. X

    the story here is that you want to tell someone that you're sorry, but you're too afraid to so you're basically writing a letter and not sending it by talking into a walkman. idk. this was a pretty sick video though.

    that was beautiful, every aspect, the music, the shots, the acting and voice, it was all just amazing. you have come so far in such a short amount of time, and at this age. you are truly an inspiration. I know for a fact you are going to go so far and do so much more, even better, and that genuinely excites me, i cannot wait to witness everything to come.

    Semiotically, the Walkman suggests he's travelled from the past to the present, leaving behind the person this monologue is directed towards, hence why he won't be able to see them again. Possibly, the use of some sort of secret time travelling machine manufactured by Nike was prohibited, the accomplice helped Bertie gain entry, where he stole a pair of trainers whilst he was there, and now the police want to pop a cap their asses. The astute observer may then ask: how would the police be able to find Bertie if he's travelled in time? WELL - I don't know.

    A survivor walking to his end, in a post-apocalyptic world. Not how you'd expect it to happen though. Not at all. The last time walking through those streets, to find something that will make someone listen. A dusty old recorder, but what could be better? He thinks all this is somehow his fault. Just a little bit. Trying to make someone hear, to gain forgiveness. Entering, his forgiveness to himself.

    I'm just sitting on my living room couch way deep in these amazing short films and vlogs after a massive bout of writers block. It's one-thirty in the morning and this particular video really resonated with me for some reason. I'll be showing it to every single one of my friends who isn't tired of me showing them things like this 24/7. Thanks for all you do.

    What I really like about this is how it doesn't have any particular context or storyline - you've allowed us as the audience to decide that for ourselves and give it our own spin, almost as if we've created something together. This is actually really cool, please do more stuff like this

    this might sound stupid to you but this is the context I figured out: He is sorry for the lost of a Dead lover who jumped off the roof where you're standing because of you (I didn't think of the precise reason but you're the guilty) She never thought you loved her and now you can't go back and tell her how you really feel so you just stand there and express your feeling to a voice recorder.

    Why does this make me cry every time I watch it? Every time I watch it it's something different - the music or the unfocused city or the words or the gentleness in your voice - and I genuinely don't know why it has this effect on me where I feel empty and alone when it finishes and then have to watch it again...and again...and again. I can't tell you how much this trips up my emotions but honestly one of the most magical things I've seen in a long time. The simplicity and lack of plot and I STILL feel like this just shows how amazing your acting and film making is Well done! :)

  • @AoifeKnowsStuffYAY
    @AoifeKnowsStuffYAY 10 лет назад

    This is so beautiful. Meaningless to the watcher yet so meaningful at the same time. It confuses you and yet intrigues your mind to wander about the many possible memories the young man could have had with the person he clearly loved, and then the outcomes of what happens next and the effect that has on everyone else. Its wonderful. Sad but some sad things are clearly beautiful.

    He's tried hard to feel something but he couldn't, so he keeps putting himself into dramatic situations to force those emotions out. But here he's more scared of getting caught for being somewhere he's not allowed to be, than really feeling sorry, or a connection with the person he's talking to.
    That was me trying to think outside the box. Love your films Bertie!
