  • WE'RE SO LUCKY - a short by bertie gilbert (2013)
    The concept for this video is simply to make the audience (you!) feel nostalgic for no good reason. I've made it seem old fashioned, home - movie like and of course, nostalgic to try evoke some kind of emotion from you guys. So..did it work?
    A little trip we took.

    Do you know what's sad? I don't feel nostalgia, but melancholia, i miss this 'place' that i have never lived in or been to. You know like when you go somewhere different and just know that you're ment to be in that place. So yes, in one minute i've felt a very strong void in my being, but it will push me forward to this 'place' i have yet to experience. Thank you. Also, very Submarine-ish (my favorite film ever), maybe that's way a strong emotion is awakened. :)

    Definitely nostalgic. The footage reminds me of a short film, like the ones kids use to make in the 60’s with super 8 camcorders. It feels as if you’ve been there, and you’ve experienced what is happening in the video. it’s also like you can relate, yet now realising it, you don’t even really know what’s happening in the video, except for the fact it people, together. you don’t even know wether their friends, strangers? Like another person said, has some features which could make it feel like extra footage from Submarine. But, anyway. Unbelievably amazing video once more Bertie! Keep it going!

    This is so brilliant. It feels really old, and classic, and a bit 80s. I don't know why exactly, but it does. I love the clip at 0:04, it seems to personify all classic old British films perfectly (the attempt to make Britain seem picturesque and permanently sunny) and the music really does make you feel nostaligic. I kinda wish people still made feature length films with these colourings and shots. plus I absolutely adore the grainy texture, give yourself a pat on the back - or maybe 20. Thousand.

    This video was so cool. It was like we were transported back to the 60's, which I know is obviously the point. My favorite shot was of the beach and it was trippy in the way that you automatically assume it was filmed 30-40 years ago. Anyway, very well done. -Mattie

    • @sussvarman
      @sussvarman 8 лет назад +1

      +Sam Tolley i THINK he uses a plug in called filmconvert. it changes the color palette of digital into film stock and adds grain and whatnot as well. Either that or he graded it in lightroom using vsco vintage presets but i doubt he would do that as opposed to filmconvert.
      so im gonna say film convert final answer.

    I just wanted to comment on what you posted on the annotation, about making the audience feel nostalgic. You need to remember that your audience is mostly very young teenagers, who aren't familiar with film (and I mean film in a technical sense). The fact that most people in the comment are using the word "vintage" proves that they aren't familiar with it. I'm also pretty sure 99% of your audience aren't familiar with technicolor. I have personally been watching films almost every day for 3 years now, trying to broaden my view on cinema history, and I own several books on cinema. I'm assuming you enjoy cinema too, but I'm afraid most of your audience doesn't. So making a short clip of what is supposed to look like a home-made film from the 60's or 70's, isn't going to make them nostalgic. Perhaps the content will, but the style, and words like "technicolor" won't. Also, I don't believe an artist should tell the audience his motives with whatever he creates, he should simply leave it to the audience to Interperate. But that's just me. As you've probably noticed, ever since you posted that annotation, the comments about "nostalgia" have increased and people who are forcing themselves to feel things they don't truly feel. I don't want you to take this criticism too negatively. I really think you have a lot of potential, but no matter what age, you have a lot to learn, and that's the beauty of art, you will never stop learning.

    • @BertieGilbert1
      @BertieGilbert1  10 лет назад +20

      I love film immensely. It's my passion! And I understand every point you've made. But don't underestimate my audience too much! I was surprised and enlightened by the intelligent, interesting and insightful concepts that were created in the comments of my Diner video. Some of my audience may not know much about film, but that's fine! A lot of them are all still very intelligent. And honestly I know not a lot about technicolor but a friend of mine just suggested that it would look nice, so I used it. Right now, i'm just experimenting. Trying different things. Making my first short film a month ago was the beginning of this phase. But yes, I have a lot to learn, as does everyone. Thanks for the response!

    • @lienzje
      @lienzje 9 лет назад +1

      Bertie Gilbert Films it's funny because I'm 16 so technicolor isnt something that id be familiar with but i used to watch Sissi (old german films that i loved because of the dresses) and this reminded me so much of that! So it made me very nostalgic!

    Nice video, but it didn't make me feel nostalgic -- too fast-paced for that. Lingering shots, cross dissolves instead of abrupt transitions, and distance shots rather than close-ups would have worked better on me. And nostalgia takes time to creep up on me. It probably needs more than 67 seconds.

  • @VeselinMarkovic
    @VeselinMarkovic 10 лет назад

    It's very beautiful! It doesn't feel like reality, it seems like a dream, an idealised version of the world, something painted with feelings in a dream or a dear memory. The view, the beach, the 50s-style houses, it all seems like something someone would want in his or her (your?) perfect world. Even the mundane or the depricated is depicted with love and a touch of bright colour.
    First two people leave, then you leave and finally all that's left are blurry lights in the dark - and the dream is over.
    That one frame with you, you can see some mixed feelings on your face, sadness but there is still a bit of joy left. It is over, but the memory remains. Or an old film, sitting on a shelf somewhere (or figuratively, in a corner of your mind).
    Very beautiful indeed. Not only a pleasure for the eye, it's a pleasure for the soul too.

    This made me miss my summers in my grandpa's summer house before he had to give up the place. Some of my best memories are going boating and being with my family and friends on the beach there. Excuse me while I cry about my lost home thanks Bertie.

    It defiantly worked. I don't know why, but something about the shaky footage makes me feel really nostalgic...

    It definitely evoked a lot of emotion, particularly for older teens and young adults I suppose. The way it looks like footage from an old 90s camcorder and the sunsets and the music. The music is sort of sad and creates a longing feeling, so it's not depressing but a distant memory we'd all like to return to in our minds. Great execution, Bertie!

    It was one of those documentaries that sort of just made you happy inside. Well done.
