Aimee Mann’s new single is a cover of Leonard Cohen’s haunting ballad “Avalanche.” It's the title track for HBO’s true-crime series "I’ll be Gone In the Dark."
@@facetiousbadger Cohen often admitted he wasn't much of a singer. In "Tower of Song" he says "I had to sing, I had no choice, I was born with the gift of a golden voice." But he singss it kind of sarcastically and makes it sound guttural when he says the 'golden voice' part.
Well I stepped into an avalanche It covered up my soul; When I am not this hunchback that you see I sleep beneath the golden hill You who wish to conquer pain You must learn, learn to serve me well You strike my side by accident As you go down for your gold The cripple here that you clothe and feed Is neither starved nor cold; He does not ask for your company Not at the centre, the centre of the world When I am on a pedestal You did not raise me there Your laws do not compel me To kneel grotesque and bare I myself am the pedestal For this ugly hump at which you stare You who wish to conquer pain You must learn what makes me kind; The crumbs of love that you offer me They're the crumbs I've left behind Your pain is no credential here It's just the shadow, shadow of my wound I have begun to long for you I who have no greed I have begun to ask for you I who have no need You say you've gone away from me But I can feel you when you breathe Do not dress in those rags for me I know you are not poor You don't love me quite so fiercely now When you know that you are not sure It is your turn, beloved It is your flesh that I wear
RIP the original singer and RIP Michelle🙏. I get a feel of calmness and mysterious hearing this song, it make me rethink/think a lot of things, especially after watching the doc🍂🥀
Cohen's version means so much to me. Hearing that as an adolescent there was just never anything like it before or after. I have to say this version is an extension of that feeling again after all these years.. It is brilliant. Great version.
She’s not underrated at all. I dunno where you get that from. Because she chose to be an independent vs a career like Til Tuesday?? Aimee is brilliant and always has been.
The immortal soul speaking to the human seeker? He is full of misconceptions, she is trying to guide him towards adapting to the subtle impulses from the soul ...
I have listened to pretty much every song Aimee Mann has recorded and I have to say this track is Epic! So many levels of acoustic! The storytelling. So beautiful.
Mr. Cohen is one of the most difficult artists to get away with a Cover. To me, only Jeff Buckley and Madeleine Peyroux had made it so far. So glad to realize that Aimee has just joined them! Thank you for this! Greetings from Brazil, and stay safe!
Wow. It's been a long time since I was captivated and carried away by a song. This is a gem. The contrast of the fast, rippling acoustic guitar arpeggios with the pensive, deliberate quality of the string section is inspired. It suggests a deep, brooding calm beneath a turbulent surface. Nicely written and beautifully sung.
I was listening to the original Leonard Cohen version this morning and was like I’ve heard this song before but sung by a woman. I some how forgot about I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which was such a haunting book and documentary.
I really like this version as well as the original by Leonard Cohen which is amazing. That being said there is another cover of this I really liked from the tv show Black Sails done by Nick Cave that's really great too. The violin in it is awesome but the pain in his voice is just raw and fits the song so well.
Aimee After all of these years singing your song, I never knew you were American, I thought you were Swedish with a foreign accent. I loved your songs voices carry. I always thought you were European. ha ha. I have been singing your song for over 20 years. I raised my kids on it. I love this song; one of my favorites in the world.
Who knows? This Cohen cover was specifically created for the HBO series I'll Be Gone in the Dark, about Michelle McNamara's quest to unmask the Golden State Killer. Aimee sung at McNamara's wedding to Patton Oswalt.
Heard this haunting song on the HBO series "I'll be gone in the dark" and thought it sounded like Ms. Mann but wasn't sure so I had to look it up. Upon confirmation it was her, I was upset I could not locate the song in her catalog - so very glad it has now been released. Cannot wait to see you on tour again some day soon.
I’ve been waiting for this whole cover after hearing the title credits for I’ll Be Gone In the Dark. Holy hell this is one of the few covers that is better than the original.
I was on a late night Cohen ride, and this caught my eye. Like the image, the music is a faithful tribute, well done. Matches old Leonard, the grosser of this pair
AHHHHAAAAAAA... So touching... "it is your flesh that I wear"...and "your pain is the shadow of my wounds"... One wonder if the darkness in the song is Jesus's complaining about his descent (avalanche) to humanity (that covered his soul) ...
“ I will be gone in the dark”brought me here. Brilliant rendition👏🏻
Same
Ditto.
same
Same here! Chills all over!
✌️
I can't get over how haunting, and even resentful this song feels. I can't think of many songs like this.
As we're coming up to 4 years without Leonard Cohen, its nice to hear his music is still floating around out there.
It's weird how talented he is, but his greatest successes have been via covers of his work.

@@Lv-nq9qz I didn't know that, thank you for the info.
Seldomly a Leonard Cohen cover is capable to touch ones soul as the originals can. This one does :)
Agreed. Now try Ricky and Slinger ‘s Love Calls You By Your Name for another .
@@erictottleTrisha Yearwood’s ‘Coming Back To You’ is amazing.
FINALLY the full version of this song!!!
One brilliant artist covering a song by another brilliant artist.
Would’ve loved to hear this covered by Joan Baez
Well I stepped into an avalanche
It covered up my soul;
When I am not this hunchback that you see
I sleep beneath the golden hill
You who wish to conquer pain
You must learn, learn to serve me well
You strike my side by accident
As you go down for your gold
The cripple here that you clothe and feed
Is neither starved nor cold;
He does not ask for your company
Not at the centre, the centre of the world
When I am on a pedestal
You did not raise me there
Your laws do not compel me
To kneel grotesque and bare
I myself am the pedestal
For this ugly hump at which you stare
You who wish to conquer pain
You must learn what makes me kind;
The crumbs of love that you offer me
They're the crumbs I've left behind
Your pain is no credential here
It's just the shadow, shadow of my wound
I have begun to long for you
I who have no greed
I have begun to ask for you
I who have no need
You say you've gone away from me
But I can feel you when you breathe
Do not dress in those rags for me
I know you are not poor
You don't love me quite so fiercely now
When you know that you are not sure
It is your turn, beloved
It is your flesh that I wear
Thank-you dear one*

Finally the full song!!! Yay!!!
Aimee is one of the most underrated singer-songwriters. She has always been my favorite! AWESOME song!
To be fair this song was written by Leonard and Cohen. She is still spectacular.
@@deidrecalabro5725 Whenever Aimee does a cover song she makes it her own and your right she is spectacular!
@@debbieguzzardo3316 "One", from Magnolia, is unquestionably the finest Nilsson cover. And there is plenty of hot competetion.
@@Green28142814 I certainly agree with that!

Aimee is brilliant and always has been.
So beautiful and haunting. Thank you, Leonard Cohen, Aimee Mann, and the people who made this chilling documentary.
I love this song. I’ll be gone in the dark brought me here too. Seen that documentary twice. ❤
Unearthly! Really incredibly beautiful song. I listened to it at least three times , just to begin to take it all in. It’s a prayer!
Agreed - a prayer indeed!
this is so beautiful and so haunting
Always a stunning, timeless song. It’s on my mind often, as are several songs by LC, the great man, and this incredible melodic writer AM. Brilliant.
Aimee Mann is terribly underrated...a duet with the great man would have been incredible because female voices always complemented his so well
This song really captures the essence of narcissist’s internal struggle with ego. Powerful lyrics.
The immortal soul speaking to the human seeker? He is full of misconceptions, she is trying to guide him towards adapting to the subtle impulses from the soul ...
so heavy but beautiful. to be listened to alone.
This is a magnificent cover of a brilliant song.
I got goosebumps..
This song is so beautiful and sad, I almost cry on every episode from I'll be gone in the dark doc series from HBOMax.
Love this❤️ Aimee Mann is *the artist* who tells a story in a song a puts you in it!
I have listened to pretty much every song Aimee Mann has recorded and I have to say this track is Epic! So many levels of acoustic! The storytelling. So beautiful.
Aimee, your cover is awesome! It matched so well with the opening of "I'll be gone in the dark". You're amazing, girl!
Greeting from Brazil!

I humbly add K.D. Lang to that very short list, and now Aimee Mann.
I can’t believe people like Jeff Buckley. Truly mind-boggling to me.
...and Roberta Flack.
echo and the bunnymen, nick cave and james, too
what about Nick Caves version of avalanche? its mind blowing ...deep and very haunting imo💜🕳
Beautiful! Brilliant work in all respects.
Goosebumps : > Heard that track the first time and also discovered the original. Both are great < 3
Thank you K-ZAP Sacramento for introducing me to this song. It changed my life for the better.
The title photo above is a tribute to the cover of Cohen's album "Songs of Love and Hate" on which this song appeared.
That album is a collection of masterpieces. Last Year's Man, Joan of Arc, Dress Rehearsal Rag, etc. Nothing else like it!
Good eye
I thought the photo reminded me of something. Thanks!

This is great! Sound-wise rather close to Lost in Space album with the strings and the overall arrangement. So, a new album coming soon-ish?
Anything coming close to Lost in Space is going to be worth waiting for.
