Looks like a fantastic week! This is something I would have tried 10-20 years ago. I wouldn’t mind be older than everyone… after 2 years of back pain I’ve recently been diagnosed with pretty bad degenerative disc’s disease so activities like these are no longer an option, very sadly. But I’m happy to watch! I love the camaraderie!
Hey, just saw your comment and wanted to say I have 'Spinal disc herniation' and I do everything including surfing. don't exactly know what is degenerative disc’s disease, but maybe you can get over it with physiotherapy!
Thanks for replying :) I have to be extremely careful or I could end up in a wheelchair and that is not on my To Fo list. I also fractured my L1 in a bad fall, which also ended up compressing one of my vertebrae. If things get much worse then I might have to have surgery but doctor said only as a very last resort. It’s OK - I have a few regrets but we can’t predict the future and I can always live vicariously through others and cheer them on! Besides, I can still walk and believe me I’m grateful for that!! 🙌🏻
Thanks Dan for sharing your experience. I never considered going to a surf camp but it sure looks like a lot of fun. My dumb questions: (1) Were the lessons in English, Portuguese or mix depending on the native language of the ‘students’ enrolled, (2) What was the mix of ‘students’ enrolled (all folks from Lisbon? Visitors from US or EU?), and (3) Is there a time of year that’s best to have surfing lessons? Might sign up a one-week for our daughter as part of our next trip to Lisbon, Obrigado.
Great questions! Everything was in English. I was the only American and there were no locals. Most were German, French or Danish. Since people came from all over Europe, English was the common language. For beginners, any time of year works. I liked going at the end of the tourist season since things were more laid back and the sun wasn't as strong so I would prefer March/April or October/November. The weather was in the low 70s and that was great.
If you don't mind I'll speak to you in Portuguese. Eu sei que já vou tarde para aconselhar de qualquer maneira, tinhas uma escola mais perto em Carcavelos... E tens outra na Ericeira, que é mais conceituada. Há também uma nessa zona mas mais perto, na praia de São Julião( fronteira do Concelho de Sintra com Mafra), isto tudo salvo erro! Pois atenção que eu não sei se com o isto do Covid estarão todas a funcionar a 100%. Sei que o meu sobrinho quando estamos na Assafora ele aprendeu na de São Julião tem pouca gente. Mas enfim era só para tentar ajudar mas decerto que já vou tarde. Enfim eu não gosto porque curto de pesca submarina. Os Vossos videos são muito bacanos! Obrigado pela partilha. Abraços

It was so much fun. Are those ski goggles in your photo? If you know how to snowboard it makes surfing easier.

The beach has a good variety of waves depending on the time of year, someone intermediate would still get waves.
