girl in the black is literally perfection oh my goodness
You mean there were more girls than Debbie Reynolds in the clip?
I, too, like the other guy only saw Debbie Reynolds :o) Its interesting how different people view people. Girt in Black is perfection, but Debbie Reynolds has more femininity. OK, I am a Guy ;)
@@KRISHNAWARRIOR lol yes!! i think also here you can tell debbie was not a trained dancer but she still stood out
Shure thing. Doll.
Dude you think this is great, catch her in an American in Paris (or singing in the Rain?)
They say that Debbie Reynolds was not a dancer when she was hired In Singing in the rain.... she sure learned fast !
And you can partly thank Fred Astaire for that! He found her crying after Gene Kelly was giving her a hard time on set and offered to tutor her.
Of all the dancers in Hollywood at the time, why would they hire her to star in a movie with two great dancing Gods like Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor?? I can understand Kelly ‘s impatience...
That being said, she proved to be a great choice. She is unforgettable in this movie.
@@gulmerton2394 Kelly wasn't impatience persay. He was a perfectionist and Reynolds wasn't a complete beginner she was a gymnast and had some dancing ability although not formally trained. However she was cast more for her looks (she was brought into the company from a pagent) and her singing.
Methinks that if Debbie Reynolds had not learned to dance in 1952, she would not have married Eddie Fisher in 1955. And Carrie Fisher would not have been cast for the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars.
Funny how Debbie never has mentioned this movie. Not once.
To all those mentioning the heels, I have danced in heels before and it’s more stable than you think for dancer because we’re on our tiptoes most of the time performing those pirouettes etc with no support. Heels like those they wear are a not even a Demi-pointe.
I’m more amazed at Debbie Reynolds keeping up with the dancers when she wasn’t a dancer all her life. That’s quite impressive.
çeci n’est pas une pipe
That’s really cool,
çeci n’est pas une pipe MDRR ton pseudo
I would actually wear all the outfits in this video today
And these dancing heels are also usually better molded and have a steel bridge. A lot of cheap normal heels don't.
This is insane. They don't look real; they're like cartoon characters!
The style of the times. What the public expected and what Madison Avenue was selling.
They are not real, its just 2d images flashing on your screen.
Musicals tend to be a little less removed from reality, and more like caricatures.
They looked like they've just stepped off a Gil Elvgren painting
that's due lot to the effect of the color rendition of technocolor process of the time
Man being a actress before is so hard considering you need to learn how to sing and tap dance
Makes sense though, sense so many movies were musicals.
I don't singing was always required, I just though most lip sync?
@@gotnojams3679 It still makes you question why would they lip sync to those vocals... Seeesh!! How bad were the original vocals??
@bribripot lmao naw I'm just joking 😂😂 but I would say they were very talented back in the day
Good looks a cute face an exaggeration for picture perfect its all in the package to feed the public an image.
Competition is normal nowadays with any profession we got used to it back then competing was a sport thing until
it expanded to show business , girls whom fallen of you don't hear about them only the mild and better success story even those girls , sorry women didn't have a happy life.
you can tell the girl in black is a serious dancer
She sure is!! 😜
Helen wood is amazing
@Dragonetta Your the moron. Its easy to see that the woman in black is very advanced and the one in pink is inferior to the other two dancers.
Helen Wood is amazing, but let's not forget the ladies are dancing in character with three different base styles of dance and experience levels (novice tap - Debbie Reynolds in pink, experienced traditional ballet - Marge Champion in green, and experienced modern ballet - Helen Wood in black) as well. So they are all serious dancers, just at different levels of training and types of dance in the scene and in real life. So while this scene is ALL Helen's (she is Phenonemonal), Debbie and Marge are no slouches in the dance department. I think of it this way, Helen's a dancer who sings and acts. Debbie's an actor who sings and dances.
Simm2Dimm
Why because of her shoes? They were all “serious dancers”. They probably had the other two girls wearing heels because they were shorter. I know for a fact that Debbie Reynolds was only 5’2”.
I'm still VERY obsessed with the amount of characterization this musical number accomplished for the first 5 hopefuls in 2 - 3 lines and under a minute. Even not seeing any of them again you get a great sense of who each woman is between the set dressing, costumes and lyrics. Truly a masterclass
Damn, those legs.
you mean gams :)
I wonder how they look like now.
FR Bmp dead
Uncultured Swine oh you drooled on your grandma?! 😅
*gags* 🤮
Delightful! They sure don't make musicals as they used to!
La la land was so bad and everyone raved about it. This is real art.
Thankfully..
@@henryautumn37 la la land wasnt bad i-
@@gabrielleporter553 it was , it was also one of the most unwatchable sht ever
@@hilarithebambee3562 someone's mad...
I had no idea Marge Champion died a few days ago, she was an incredibly talented dancer and this dance number from Give a Girl a Break sticks out for me. Thankfully 101, is a full life that seemed well lived for someone who was dancing in their 90s.
Can’t imagine doing ballet moves in heels 👏🏻
Wouldn't we all!
Ballet was originally done in heels.
The dancer in all black is amazing!!

@@blackmore4 A very interesting article. Her life was inspirational and sad.
Helen Wood (the 3rd girl) was thought to be the great new star of musicals, but her mother was so difficult no studio wanted to work with her. She was dancing on Broadway when she was 16.
I researched her after and it's quite a dark tale after that. 😭
Damn, she starred at a 1972 porn film titled Deep Throat under the screen name Dolly Sharp. Sad that her career tanked when she clearly got the talent.
@@blackmore4 Thanks you. Helen has been a legend to me since I went to NY in 1953 to study tap at a famous school there -- Jack Stanly's. Never met her, but heard about her so often. She had (we thought) the career we all wanted to have.
@@blackmore4 That is....utterly depressing.
I'm 68 now. My mother used to tell me when I was younger. Never envy another person. You can never know what their life is really like. My mother just turned 90. I don't have a car at the moment. So I have to depend on her to drive me around!
It's crazy the woman here are like 100 years old now
I-
Only one lived to be 100. That's Marge Champion, who reached that milestone on Sept. 2, 2019.
J. E.
I can’t speak for the other women but Debbie Reynolds the woman in pink is 84 years old she was born April 1, 1932. Not quite 100 years old.
You mean "the _women_ here"; "woman" is singular. Don't be a dumbass.
@@janedoe805 Unfortunately, Debbie Reynolds passed away in 2016, just one day after her daughter, the late Carrie Fischer (princess Leia of "Star Wars") did so of a heart attack during an airplane travel. When they landed it was too late. Both beautiful, talented and missed......
1:50 when you are practicing social distancing at the supermarket 😂 fun fact: Marge Champion, the woman in green is still alive and over 100 years old.
Marge Champion was also the live-action reference for Snow White. You can find shots of her mugging for the camera here on RUclips.
Чуть каблук в голову не загнала
Id like to jump in a time machine and give them more than a break.
But now Id have to give it to them in the cemetery.
Marge died six days ago.
1:32 when you get the bill at the restaurant and its way more money than you thought you'd have to pay
Bruh im dead 💀
That killed me😂
yesss!
I need to see this every time I think about slacking of my stretching routine. :)) Girl in black is amazing.
I think that girl was Audray Hepbern.
The futures of the three girls seeking a break could be the text for a sermon about Fortune and fate.
Debbie made the most of modest talents, worked hard and lived down her beauty-queen backstory. Despite being an accidental star at the outset, in the best film she was ever in, she enjoyed a long career in films and TV.
Marge never quite clicked in movies, and in this one is already playing a stage vet attempting a comeback. But on Broadway she was a true Champion both in front of and behind the footlights, living to be over 100.
As for Helen Wood- her story is too gory to retell. Look it up for yourselves. It is eerie how often she is dressed all in black here.
Helen wood has a dark history
Great number from a musical that deserves to be better known. Great musical arrangements/conducting from a young Andre Previn with assistance from the legendary Saul Chaplin and Conrad Salinger. Warner Archive VOD service is a must-have for anyone who loves classic musicals.
I don't know why this musical is not better known. Debbie Reynolds never mentions this musical...not even once in all of the interviews I have seen of her. Reynolds only talks about Singing in the Rain, sometimes she might mention Molly Brown or Tammy but there are so many other wonderful musicals and dramas that she starred in that she never mentions. You would think that Singing in the Rain was the only movie she ever made.
These "Old" Musical movies... Are just lovely for sure!!!
RIP Marge Champion 101 yrs.
I love how in these old movies they had to actually have talented people that could do big dance numbers in one take. Also, those pumps look like they'd be hard to dance in with no strap to keep it on your foot...
Dont you just love how satisfying there voices are?
Brilliant dance routines Marge Champion died this week aged 101, married to Gower another fabulous dancer Show Boat, Oaklahoma musicals
The tap dancer in red is so cute 🥰🥰
That's Debbie Reynolds. She was also mother of Carrie Fisher.
Omg Debbie Reynolds what a babe
dzfz2100 Ik right, damn those legs.
No one is talking about the contortionist, but man, she was talented
Now, that's talent!!! Woooowww!!!
UGH Debbie Reynolds just the cutest thing ever
Never heard of this movie, but love the clip!
0:29 and the lady after her cracked me up
Alex Chambers yo that girls voice 😂😂
Yo what is she saying
Marge Champion is 100 years old!
Stunning! Each dancer is a solid dance technician! I wish dancers still cross-trained this hard! Wow!
It sucks that now that everyone can do musicals, no one does anymore 💔 This was one of my favorite scenes to rewatch as a teen.
Wonderful!...and to think that two of the women were doing their dance-routines wearing high-heel shoes!
man......back in the dayz............................too good to be true
0:30 - Obviously didn't get the job because of her singing voice.....
im pre sure thats the point because the first ones good at singing, the second ones good at acting, the third ones pretty, the fourth one is good at dancing i think and the 5th one is rich. I might be wrong I havent seen the musical lmao
just amazing...the good old days
Debbie Reynolds and two professional dancers. Wonderful!
A man can really appreciate the limberness of these women. 😃🤩
RIP Marge Champion (the one in green)
its sad to see you go 10/21/20 😢😥💋💕
The colours!!!
I'm so obsessed with this!
My favorite Debbie Reynolds musical is actually Charlotte’s Web! Loved that SO much as a kid, especially since it was faithful to the original story.
An incredible incomparable historical Hollywood classique in Technicolor print. BRAVO for this perfect rendering! Merci beaucoup from Paris France
Viva Warner Archive.!
Muchísimo talento y dedicación en pantalla.
lmao some of those voices are _choices_ and I love it
Helen Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Marge Champion. Wow!
good god these women can dance
this video in my recommendations is a clear sign that I've been working too much in the last days, and need a break. thank u universe 😂
Girl in black - say no more!! 👌
I'm in love with the 50th and this is a Amazing art beautiful ❤️❤️❤️✨✨
I'd love to know if LaLa Land "Somewhere in the Crowd" was inspired by this scene? Anyway give a lot of credit to Debbie Reynolds for dancing with some "real" dancers.
Debbie Reynolds is thé best actor i EVER meth before
Can someone with insight tell me what earns you legs like that? Dancing? Ballet? The damn stairs!? 💕
Years of ballet and no carbs. Say bye to pasta baby. 🍝 🧁 🍬
...genetics and lots of dance classes.
For a modern exercise, I heard Barre classes are pretty good. Yoga for flexibility too. Not such about pilates, but it could be great to look into
Constantine Palaiologos Shut up liberal dumbass
The talent is incredible. I love it 💗
Seriously there is not one comment on any of these Debbie Reynolds videos about her being Carrie Fisher‘s mother. Carrie Fisher‘s father was Todd Fischer. Carrie Fisher played Princess Leia Star Wars 1977. Debbie Reynolds died December 28, 2016 one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died. Telling her son Todd, “I want to be with Carrie.” I remember the day Carrie died because, it was my first Wedding Anniversary without my Husband who died the month before.
Wasnt her father Eddie Fischer the actor?
Carrie Fisher's father was Eddie Fisher, not "Todd".
Carrie Fisher Leia's mom. Debbie Reynolds. !!!
Yup. There was a time when to become famous as a performer, one had to have talent.
Or hard earned ability.
I love the looks on their face.
AWESOMENESS!!!
So talented!
Exquisite dancers.
I love this
Brilliant! It was beautiful time…)
No matter which girl this video upload features, our fave will always be sweetest Debbie Reynolds. Note those cute intricate steps even when she is pitted with one of America's best dancers, Marge Champion [of Marge and Gower fame]. Get a load of Marge's legs, pure muscle. Marge & Gower Champion were featured in Lovely to look at, Everything I have is yours, Jupiter's Darling and Three for the show. This video will be an eye-opener for shapeless girls who dream of an hour-glass figure. But, they are first advised to see what the dance exercise entails before they can give it a try. The world around produces good dancers time and again, but no one can dance like the American stars of the 40's and 50's. They are unique, unparalleled! One can watch this upload a thousand times and it will still have recall value. Thank you RUclips and the Warner Bros. archive!
Such a beautiful era though
I am so inlove with Debbie Reynolds dress
2:20 debbie 😂
Desiree M she’s trying her best 😂
Her extensions compared to the other women are adorable... but she could charm honey from a bee
🥰beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I was watching The Office clips and I somehow got here. RUclips continues to confuse me
Don't you just love RUclips !!! Every days a school day.
I'm sure after seeing that that you ladies got a break!
Respect they doing this with heels
This is such a workout oh my.
0:45 The only girl who has a voice tolerated by my eardrums!!😨
Very risqué... I LOVE IT
Marge Champion was awesome
The girls at the beginning of the video, did they accidentally voice the cartoons ??
Who else thinks that female film stars were more glamorous back then? Real women!!
as opposed to the AI robots we have instead of women nowadays?
Unbelievable!
Short skirts in the fifties!
Debbie struggles with that choreographed backwards somersault at around 2:20 😉
Good eye. I totally missed it.
My eyes were in the girl in black. But totally
And Debbie still couldn't do a double-pirouette. It's clear she wasn't classically trained for the precision needed to turn properly but she did OK by any standards of being a newbie dancer at the time. She was a natural. She just needed more time.
I noticed that too..however it was kind of cute knowing that Debbie had virtually no formal dance training.
Imagine reading newspaper like this in real life. LOL
You should start watching this video from 0:22, only without sound, and add sound from 0:44!
Love this clip, but is anyone else getting serious powderpuff girl vibes😆💗
When they do all those a dances in high heels 😳😳🤯🤯
fantastic
Girl in black is cool
amazing
The old Times..🙌🙌🙌🙌
I don't get what the big deal is. Isn't this how everybody reads the paper?
Watched this amazing dancing clip and my only thought was how did they keep their shoes on? I was trained in musical theater in high school all shoes have straps.
Nude straps black shoes
GENE KELLEY WORK WITH THEM.
I'm 67 years old and I probably wasn't even one year old when they did this movie in 1953
00:45
Lemme catch my son playing solitaire with a broad like that around...
Solitaire...
More like solid...
I’m 93 btw.
How
0:07 says they are Gotham. Is Batman in this musical?
Daniel Kwok The city name “Gotham” is originally a nickname for New York City that was used in the late 1800’s, and then DC comics based the name around it.
Dang. Short skirts really are timeless.
I was actually think of the Gotham City Sirens with Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Harley Quinn dancing to this routine
Girl in the green got some legs. Goals !
