I 100% relate to Ash's sentiment of creating an environment where one has no choice but to focus. I've not been diagnosed with ADHD or anything, but during exams at school, an environment in which i was forced to do work, i was able to do my work pretty easily, but anywhere else, I have trouble doing much of anything, theres just too many distractions. I wonder if changing my room around and doing the whole Feng Shui thing will emulate that exam room, no distractions, just work feeling
This is a great concept but I do think they should’ve collabed with someone who is experienced with feng shui such as Dearmodern to help them out with the process and create the best spaces.

As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD, I definitely relate to the object permeance issue. I will forget anything from a book I just bought to stationary to snacks in my fridge. I am intrigued by this video though, definitely need to declutter my space!
I have to put things down on a list so when I do quickly forget about them I still have a place to remember, but it’s not that much help when i forget I have that list with things to do on it.
You two poking at each other about the socks and the uncharged phone was adorable and reminded me of my husband and I! He also has a habit of leaving unmatched socks everywhere.
"Yes, right now I feel so much more inspired and motivated to put stuff away, but when stuff *is* away, I. forget. it. exists." Ash, being the neurodivergent icon we all needed.
I bought a label machine so I could label stuff. Do I use it? Not very often, but it does make finding and putting away my mom’s eaveshams much easier because I know where it’s supposed to be
A couple years ago Steph had mentioned a woman's blog about how you should go through all of your belongings, ask yourself "do I really need this item" and "do I even use it enough each day", and if the answer is no, get rid of it or donate it. I followed it and felt less messy and better. I wonder if Steph remembered that while filming this video. 🤔
I have a little shelf on the back of my desk that has a bunch of "useless" things on it. One of these is an AtLA zen garden that I don't touch, but it does, in fact, bring joy. As a architect I knew that the redecorating would help, cause the ambient around us really influences our day to day lives in a lot of little ways that in the end have a big impact. For example, hospitals that have colors and organical shapes and textures in the halls are reported to have bigger recovery rates
I’m really glad that Ash acknowledged the lack of Object Permanence that most ADHDers experience. Cause I struggle with the same thing. That’s one of the reasons that I have clutter everywhere (my organized chaos) and it’s the reason I’m so hesitant to get rid of things. With that being said, I think I’m going to try and implement some of these in my apartment (maybe with my roommates??) and maybe I’ll be more focused.
What's helped me: store things in clear containers AND cover one's shelving with curtains. That way the immediate effect is reduction of visual clutter, but then whenever I need something, I pull back the curtain and can see where everything is. It's not perfect, but was the best compromise I've found for my ADHD self.
I’d love to see the Theorists return to this in a month or two to see if it has any difference. I remember when Feng Shui was BIG NEWS back in the late 90s (yeah, I’m that old) and it filled so many tv shows, magazines and books. I remember a few daytime tv shows tested it out (here in the uk anyway!) and they all swore that it made a huge difference… It’s interesting that everyone liked the green in the spaces. From what I’ve read, green is always called the creative colour (I don’t care what DHMIS says!) so maybe that marries up? I reckon it does make a difference, but not for any woowoo reasons. More that it opens up the space and creates a calmer, less distracting environment and prevents dust build-up. As well as this try out, it would be a fascinating deep dive in future.
I actually deal, similarly to Ash, with bad object permanence when I put things away. It is why I get anxiety about cleaning personal spaces like my room cause I fear that I'll forget about something's existence long enough for me to not remember where I put it, which has happened more times than I would like to admit.
Ash's reaction is the most relatable and helpful for me. I also forget things exist if I don't see them, so I need things spread out where I can see them. Though I've recently learned they can be visible but also organized.
14:30 "and I was taking my cue from the FOUNDATIONAL STRUCTURES OF TYE HOUSE" has to be the best comeback I've ever seen, the funniest line I've heard this month and and I don't even think he was trying to be funny
I've used some of the basics of Feng Shui my whole life because my house is awkwardly laid out so everything had to be laid out in a specific way to make the room functional. My parents are also strict about clutter so I can confirm that it really does help tons
Something I learned at a young age is that your eyes always see everything in your vision even if you're not actively focusing on it. Decluttering helps a lot to keep your mind from processing all of the unnecessary stuff so you can use more brain power on what actually matters
As someone with ADHD, I can really feel the "if I can't see it, it doesn't exist" thing. My bedroom doubles as my leatherworking workshop, and one of the most useful changes I've made was adding in a pegboard for nearly all of my tools. Before I did that, there would be tons of tools I would forget I even had simply because I forgot I had bought them, or didn't remember where they went.
The wholesome banter between Matt and Steph sends me😂. Also, and I know its random, but Ash is so adorable, shes like a little lovebird you'd want to do anything for 😊❤
it's nice to see the other members of the team shine. Normally only see head editor Dan doing voice overs for game and film theory and even then its only the voice over. It's nice to see team member's introduced by their little sprites/jpegs and then to actually see them.
In their results, I wish they had shared some more thoughts about the furniture arrangement of the room. Especially since that's such an important part of feng shui. Both the rooms in the video had the desks turned to face into the room instead of the wall. For me personally, that is a MASSIVE difference and I feel much better facing into the room. I feel more in control of the room and at ease with the space around me. But they didn't really elaborate on this in the video. I also feel like a LOT could be improved with that office in the new apartment. Yes, it looked sterile, because it was. Be careful not to confuse "get rid of clutter" with "get rid of all the decorations." It's okay to decorate. (Keeping in mind that it's a new apartment and they're still moving in, of course.) And at night, I would recommend using two or three small lamps placed around the room instead of that horrendous overhead light. I also recommend lighting color that's in the 2850K to 3000K range, which is kind of like the lighting you'd expect in an art gallery, cooler than incandescent but warmer than fluorescent.
This. I'm not into fung shui myself, but when I think 'fung shui' I think of furniture arrangement more than anything else. While the video is fun it feels like it's focusing a lot more on just decluttering than actual fung shui lol
@@silence2314 Exactly. And staying tidy and organized isn't even a uniquely feng shui idea! It just feels like they continually lost focus of the whole idea throughout the video.
@@Shako_Lambwelp that just shows that they only scraped the surface of feng shui. But tbh i dont blame them. My mom studies it and like even after 5 years or so there is still much for her to learn. Though i would recommend to ask someone who knows a little more about feng shui if they were to make another similar video (though i doubt it).
Quite similar to the "clean your room" principle. Improve your closest environment such as it does not create unnecessary distractions, stress or frustrations.
I love just watching Mat and Steph be goofy and funny the amount of lines that have audibly made me laugh is insane compared to anything else i watch, (also small note Mat's laugh is possibly the most contagious laugh I've ever heard)
Mat: (looking around) We should really consider remodeling. Steph: Yeah, I know, but it's so expensive... Mat: Well... lifestyle is still style... Hello work write-offs!
Feng Shui seems like one of those things that probably does have benefits if you are doing it correctly but they are almost certainly overstated by those trying to make a profit off of it. What I would expect to be the ACTUAL purpose of Feng Shui is to be mindful of your environment and the way you set it up rather than the positioning of the chairs in a certain way itself having some sort magic effect over your mood. Being mindful of ones environment is believed to be able make somebody feel more in control and reduce anxiety. I feel like Feng Shui has gotten reduced to only its aesthetic elements which got rid of the aspect of it that was actually healing which is the mindful part of paying attention to how the arrangements of a space effects its functionality aswell as your emotions.
Feng Shui seems to be an early version of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The mysticism of it seems to be more of a mix of pneumonic devices and proto-psychological reasonings. Certain layouts work better for productivity, sense of security, and minimization of distraction. All three of these things generally improve mood.
The Real stuff is more complicated. Even if it’s ‘ fake but there is like actual rules.. counters.. items its not just round, and clutter lol There are ying yang mirrors, following the North Pole, moving furniture in certain angle, etc. it’s actually pretty fun.. cause you follow the “ master’ and they tell you everything… The stuff they did in the video is western fuen shui.. so it’s not the same at all.. you don’t have the same “ experience”
I’m a college student with a rigorous courseload and keeping my bedroom clean and decluttered has to be the most helpful thing I’ve learned how to do. It helps me stay focused and on-task while preventing me from being overwhelmed with stimuli.
The word intentional keeps popping up. And I think that's something that Feng Shui actually helps the most with. It helps you feel like you have more control over your space. Like there is control in the chaos of life, and I think that's so important.
Nice timing, I just decided to really tackle the clutter in my bedroom because I've noted how much it actually affects my mood. I bought some better closet organization that's getting here just after Turkey Day. I'll watch this again when it comes. Also happy Turkey Day everyone!
This is something I started employing myself and it’s really helped me out. Making the most important tasks of each room obvious really helps improve efficiency.
The dedication of fully reorganizing the whole office and even Ash and Tamar’s apartment, this is why I love the Theorist Team, there’s so much love in the process of all the theories you guys come up with ❤❤ I’m going to apply some of these principles to my own home where I can, maybe we can feel a little less lost day-to-day
My room is constantly cluttered and I’ve tried for years to keep it clean. Stuff is left everywhere. I want to make it a place I can actually move around in and enjoy. Thanks for the inspiration, Team Theorist! P.s. Maybe I’ll post updates to keep me accountable lol
Ask a friend for help! Even if they just sit around chatting to you while you clean it makes a big difference. It’s better when there’s two of you doing the work though, and then you can treat them to coffee or lunch 😊
My husband and I have been steadily working through our cabinets and cupboards, getting everything organized. And just removing the tiny irritants of having to dig through shelves or having things fall out when cupboard doors are opened has already improved our moods.
I TOTALLY feel Ash's thoughts. I too have ADHD, when it comes to having things put away out of sight. Object permanence is a HUGE issue. If I don't see it or touch it everyday then it will just disappear
It always felt so weird to say that Marie Kondo and minimalism changed my life, but being able to finally focus on what’s actually important and not the random junk in my room has been the biggest benefit ever.
As someone with anxiety (and ADHD hehe) I have always felt the stress in clutter, so it's funny to see that in this video because I'm constantly reminded of that anxious feeling if a room is not clean.
I actually love this video so much, it immidiately reminded me of that one guy who reviews people's rooms with Feng Shui and ive slowly but surely been taking notes from him to structure my own limited space. I honestly feel like it has deeper connections to psychology than we might give it credit for, especially since a lot of it has seemingly been backed up by actual research (such as the plant and greenery thing), so i think the stuff we might not be able to put a solid idea to could absolutely change the way you operate and feel
I think theres a lot of scientific basis for feng shui, although specifically organizing my living space like an exam room sounds like a nightmare lol that would raise my stress levels so much, even looking at the minimalist barebones office space made me anxious
As a person with severe ADHD ive intuitively been using feng shui to optimise the last three spaces I lived in and its been a life changer. Making your space work for you, instead of trying to fit in a space built for someone else is key. I used to never be able to file my clothes and put them on shelves in a wardrobe so I got a hanging clothing rack. I used to struggle with loads of dirty laundry on the floor near my bed bc im a morning shower person so i got a hamper next to my bed - it made the task of picking up the dirty laundry infinitely more confident. I get severe anxiety when sitting in a desk thats facing a wall, so i turned mine around. Even if it looked weird, it was incredibly practical. Right now I live in a one-room apartament and using the zoning philosophy from feng shui ive been able to devide it into four seperate zones for different activities - work space, bed space, clothing zone and kitchen, and even if there is very little space it feels open and spacious. Its just funciontal and having a functional space removes room for frustrations.
as someone living with parents due to the rising cost of living, and owning alot of stuff from living out of home, add onto having the smallest room in the house, it makes it really hard to just not have clutter. i have a mix of bedroom, study, storage and wardrobe all cramped into a small room. i had re arranged many times just to keep things fresh, but until i can save enough for a decent deposit (which rises by the day) i will have to deal with having to share my space with my clutter

Commenting before 8:30 because I'm greatly enjoying Matt and Steph roasting each other for their habits in this video. Style Theory is becoming "RUclipsr Lifestyle Unveiled" to me, ever since Steph mentioned in the first shower episode "here we are at our shower, the one place I thought I would never be exposing to the internet" (or something like that).

I’m already too kind, I could not be that type of interior designer. I would 100% help my clients and answer questions, and give input and any other things that are NICE
It turns out I was unknowingly using Feng-Shui for so long! Recently I reorgenized a lot of rooms in my house I disliked entering, like the laundry room & the storage room who were.... a bit more than messy. I cleaned them and then "reshaped" the room for more space to move through, It was such a massive change! I knew where everything was! Although each room took ~8 hours of cleaning & organizing (mainly organizing), it made all the difference. So thank you to the 40 Ted-Talks I listened to for months. And my parents for helping me through this lol
I think the whole idea has some merit in terms of making rooms feel more comfortable or less overwhelming. I was on holiday once with a bed facing directly towards a door and i felt a bit uncomfortable trying to sleep
I'm sorry, guys. I need a moment to process how stinking CUTE Ash is! Please forgive me! I have never seen what they look like, and I can't get over how adorable they are!
@@LangThoughts Thinking is not your forte, is it. "They" can be used regardless of gender. It's a language thing not a hip thing. Correcting something like this is sad for the school that taught you.
I would really love to see a followup on Feng Shui in living spaces, as I can definetly see it improving focus, but also feel sterile, which would be really bad for living spaces.
My paper shredder became my new best friend. My room was full of old bills that were either already paid or just junk. And seeing it all become fluffy piles of document noodles was so satisfying.
Interior design student here! I love how you guys incorporated everything in your space, the few things i would change is get a set palette for the space and hang up a bit more pictures/decor. It isn't Feng Shui, but it is interior design, and my little goblin brain turned on when i heard 'redecorating'.
The fact that I relate to Ash makes me think I have undiagnosed ADHD 😅 I also have a tendency to forget a LOT of random things that are probably useful but I also remember random fun facts that don't really matter 😂 I'm not nearly as stressed though. Something I learned when I had a painting class was to just go with the flow. Basically, I shut out anything that I'll overthink about because I do better coming up with a plan on the spot for some things 😅 Edit: I personally am interested in redesign and I rearranged some things in my room. All I have to say is that I probably need to get a comfier chair since the chair I have isn't really comfortable for someone who really doesn't like the feeling I get when I'm sitting in a certain position due to being skinny. Not only do I feel numb sometimes but I get squeamish...hard to explain the sensation 😅
As someone with AuDHD (ADHD/autism) I definitely do believe Fung-Shui is a thing. I have an apartment that has a "sunroom" instead of your traditional balcony and it lets in so much sunlight and I love it, and I have lots of vine lights hanging in my apartment to give the plant feel. I also feel extreme stress when I have an extremely messy apartment and I feel relief when it's on the cleaner side. I also use open "doom" boxes for regular clutter so I have a place for it and don't tear the apartment apart looking for something lol Also, Ash, you look absolutely stunning wearing hoops 🥰 Edit: 22:30 to combat object permanence issues I store everything in clean bins/buckets or baskets and label bins as well so I know what's the general category of stuff inside; also, to combat sterileness of an environment I add artwork I enjoy, in particular in my living room I have lots of portraits of cats in different historical garbs/references and it gives me so much joy to look at
I started reorganizing my whole room to declutter clothes I don't wear anymore or decorations I wanted to replace, but I got so busy with my job and school that I ended up leaving the toom half-done (and in the process it was messy whereas it wasn't before, just very packed). Going to keep at that right now 😁
I actually feel very anxious with my back to the door not knowing who or what might creep up on me. But with my eyes towards the door I do feel much more in control of the room.
22:24 Ash, have you seen the Clutterbug quiz? You might be a butterfly, which means you need to have your stuff organized so it is visually available, even if it is physically put away. It was a life-changing realization when I saw what I was doing wrong...
Thank you so much for suggesting this, even if it was directed towards Ash. I actually ended up being a butterfly as well, and now some things about how and why my spaces are the way they are make a lot more sense. ;^;
I absolutely have noticed a difference! I live in a small apartment, where most of my clutter typically goes on the kitchen table, but I cleaned it up last week and I know I’ve already felt less stressed in my space even though this week has been relatively busier than the last! Thanks for this video!
I am actually so excited that y'all did this experiment because it makes me feel better about a decision I made recently. I decided I needed to pack my stuff up and rearrange my bedroom because with the clutter and the positioning of my furniture I was getting stuck in an unhealthy pattern. I'm not done with it yet and will definitely have to add letting y'all know how well it works to my todo list but this video has definitely resparked my motivation.
Even if Feng Shui is only a style gimmick, this video already gave me motivation to clean my room

A couple years ago Steph had mentioned a woman's blog about how you should go through all of your belongings, ask yourself "do I really need this item" and "do I even use it enough each day", and if the answer is no, get rid of it or donate it. As a architect I knew that the redecorating would help, cause the ambient around us really influences our day to day lives in a lot of little ways that in the end have a big impact. For example, hospitals that have colors and organical shapes and textures in the halls are reported to have bigger recovery rates
"If your feeling overwhelmed lay on the circle" got some laughs out of me.
I remember a few daytime tv shows tested it out (here in the uk anyway!) and they all swore that it made a huge difference…
It’s interesting that everyone liked the green in the spaces.

The lights recommendation is great, thank you!!

-Steph :getting angry about interior designing
-Matpat :just sad and tired
The word intentional keeps popping up. And I think that's something that Feng Shui actually helps the most with. It helps you feel like you have more control over your space. Like there is control in the chaos of life, and I think that's so important.
Nice timing, I just decided to really tackle the clutter in my bedroom because I've noted how much it actually affects my mood. I bought some better closet organization that's getting here just after Turkey Day. I'll watch this again when it comes. Also happy Turkey Day everyone!

The fact that I relate to Ash makes me think I have undiagnosed ADHD 😅
I also have a tendency to forget a LOT of random things that are probably useful but I also remember random fun facts that don't really matter 😂
I'm not nearly as stressed though. Something I learned when I had a painting class was to just go with the flow.
Basically, I shut out anything that I'll overthink about because I do better coming up with a plan on the spot for some things 😅
Edit: I personally am interested in redesign and I rearranged some things in my room.
I also use open "doom" boxes for regular clutter so I have a place for it and don't tear the apartment apart looking for something lol
Also, Ash, you look absolutely stunning wearing hoops 🥰
Edit: 22:30 to combat object permanence issues I store everything in clean bins/buckets or baskets and label bins as well so I know what's the general category of stuff inside; also, to combat sterileness of an environment I add artwork I enjoy, in particular in my living room I have lots of portraits of cats in different historical garbs/references and it gives me so much joy to look at

I started reorganizing my whole room to declutter clothes I don't wear anymore or decorations I wanted to replace, but I got so busy with my job and school that I ended up leaving the toom half-done (and in the process it was messy whereas it wasn't before, just very packed). Going to keep at that right now 😁

Thank you so much for suggesting this, even if it was directed towards Ash. I actually ended up being a butterfly as well, and now some things about how and why my spaces are the way they are make a lot more sense. ;^;
