There is a bit to unpack here actually. This song came out in 1982, only five years after the huge blockbuster film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that everybody would have known about in 1982. That movie was called "Närkontakt av tredje graden" so this song is mostly about a Close Encounter of the Third Kind but with banana-people. That in itself would have been anough of a pun to name the song "Banankontakt av tredje graden" but that it is a play on words as banankontakt actually already is a swedish word just makes it more clever for the '80's swedes. The first lines in the song are taken from the old Superman (Lasse Åberg is a huge comic book fan) serials where people would say "It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!" when they saw something streaking across the sky. Here they of course say "It's a bird! It's a plane! No it is a super banana!" instead as what is streaking across the sky is a banana. Janne Schaffer, one of the most talented and well known swedish musicians ever of course made lots of pop/rock-songs as a studio musician, working for the likes of ABBA. His solo career though really took of when he went to america to record with the Porcaro family, from Toto fame, but he mostly wrote fusion, sometimes folk influenced. I suspect he had a side of him that wanted to do rock though even though he knew he wouldn't measure up with the likes of Björn&Benny and maybe kept to fusion because of that. However, he let this side of himself come out when writing childrens music together with Lasse Åberg for Electric banana band (rhyming with Electric ladyland) with Lasse writing the lyrics and Janne writing the music. Their theme song called Electric banana band is even better, and more up tempo, than this one.
IN 1982 WE ONLY HAD two TV channels one of which has kids programs for 30 minutes a day. This means that any song featured on the programme is etched in the mind of 90% of the kids and an instant evergreen regardless of quality
I´ve heard that the origin of this song is the fact that all fruits on earth can be said to be related to each other but bananas. One conspiracy hypothesis is therefore that the banana seed is brought to us from outer space. Anyhow. The groove in Electric Banana band is mostly because of Janne Schaffer, one of the best gitarrists in Sweden who has played with ABBA, Bob Marley and Toto. Back in the days quality and money was invested in children programs. :)
"has played with Bob Marley and Toto" är ju att TA I...
I can see there are parallels to Frank Zappa's music. Silly text, several transitions, skilled musicians, the background of the people. Lasse Åberg has been working with art, performance, film, graphics, etc. He runs a Micky Mouse Museum. He has past 80 years. Schaffer released his first album in 1973 and is still active. Electric banana band has also an interesting solution on how to convince people (through their children) on how to discard batteries: the song "Morfar och kaninen". Intelligent, silly, and nice! Which reminds me of another intelligent Swedish songwriter, artist, and preformer especially within wordplay. Robert Broberg who turned into Robban, who turned into Zero, who turned into Robert Karl Oskar Broberg and back. Hits through time: "Ingela", "Carola", "Koftan", "Båtlåt", "Vatten", "Maria-Therese". I like the lurid "Likbil" and the quite long "Öken" from the show "Målarrock" which filled Globen twice(!) in 1991. First choise: "Vatten" (sort of love song to Stockholm)
Yes, all Robert Broberg’s songs are classics. The lyrics are and concepts of the songs are pure works of art. Broberg was also an art student before he became a song wizard. My favourite tv program as a kid was ”The Pling and Plong Show”. I would reccommend: ”Båtlåt”, not a song but ”Väderfelprataren” is a comedy classic, ”Vatten”, ”Det som göms i snö”, ”Jag älskar dig ditt helvete”, ”Barhopping”. All his songs have a original and playful way to use words, and there is often a deeper meaning behind the sometimes corny perfornances.
Hahaha, oh dear... Brings back memories! Also remember when they went on this big come back tour back in -99. We went to see them on a free city festival concert in Linköping, the place was crowded, thousands of people, young and old and all inbetween, all singing along to this song. This is a true Swedish classic! Hoping for Niklas Strömstedt to come up soon.
Lasse Åberg, the brain behind the band, is a famous graphic designer and painter. Among many other things he made the design of the fabric on the sofas on the subway. He also made a lot of classic movies, for example Sällskapsresan.
Electric banana band is a follow up to the TV-shows for children 'Trazan och Banarne', made by Lasse Åberg, wich hade a djungle theme were the banana freqently was a part of the show in different ways. The guitarist of the band; Janne Schaffer used to play at a banana shaped guitar. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trazan_%26_Banarne The title of this song is playing with words as you know, but in that also with the movie title 'Närkontakt av tredje graden' wich is the Swedish title of the movie 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'.
There are a lot of songs for children written and performed by very skilled musicians in Sweden. For example, jazz bassist Georg Riedel wrote the music for the stories by Astrid Lindgren. Worth a listen :)
I think as a Swedish kid born late 70's, this might be just the 3 time I hear this song in it's full -ish, it's just fun to see other hear it for first time
The intro to this is a parody on the classic "It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!" stick from DC Comics Superman (known in Sweden as Stålmannen, "Steel Man" in english.
Check out when they were on Allsång på skansen. They have fans from 40+ years down to little kids. Generations has watched Trazan and Banarne and loved them.
I've listed to them since i was a kid. One of the singers Lasse/Trasan is a Swedish famous movie maker to. Allot the old swedish classics is his. And the other singer here Claes/Banarne is one of the actors. I think Janne (The guitarrist here) wrote some of the soundtack songs.
I guess you’ve seen the movies in the series ”sällskapsresan ” Lasse Åberg is one of the leading singers, of EBB. The songs are usually about humanity treating the world weird/bad. The musicians are all top notch, even tho the songs are corny/educational Title is inspired by The spielberg movie “ close encounters of the third degree “
While the two main members are mostly comedians the guitarist of Electric Banana Band, Janne Schaffer, is a very renowned session musician who played on most of ABBAs records as well as some other famous artists in the 70s.
Hej amerikanen, I am an old lady of 75 and I really like your videos. Disability, the corona virus and my age - all those facts make it hard for me to survive mentally. Tack för att du retar mina skrattmuskler! Det behöver jag.I suggest that you react to two female artists. Siw Malmkvist was born in 1936, and ever since 1957 she has provided us with many happy and catchy hits- "Mamma är lik sin mamma" is a cover of an American song: "Sadie The Cleaning Lady" and is a real classic- And then " Euphoria" by Loreen , which has won the Eurovision. I have been told that Loreen has her roots in North Africa, but to me she feels like an explosive fairy from the deep Swedish woods - a grown.up version of Ronja Rövardotter by Astrid Lindgren. By the way - is your comedy show wheelchair accessible? I like your attitude and it would be fun to see you live making fun of us Swedes the American way.
Thanks for watching and for the song suggestions! The venue that I have my club at doesn't have wheelchair access right now, but I think we could figure something out for you if you wanted to come to a show.
The song title is intended pun/a parody of Steven Spielbergs ”Close Encounters of the third kind” (the movie released in 1977) - if you know that, the lyrics will make more sense! ☺️
If you like the musicians in the song you should try Rongedal with there song " Who do you yhink your fooling" They where a part of Electric banan band as well as Janne Schaffer, one of the best guitarists in Sweden. Love your reactions btw.
Lasse Åberg is a Swedish classic. You need to see sällskapsresan. Maybe a patreon exclusive? That movie and its sequel are essential pop culture reference-wise.
A number of the band members have roots as session musicians behind ABBA. The guitarist Janne Shaffer is also close friend to Pocaro brothers in TOTO. I know you listen some to Ted Gärdestad. He made a album in English. Of me considered his best album. Recorded in LA. Look at the list of session musicians at this album. Brought together by Janne Shaffer due to his personal connections in Los Angeles.
You described the meaning of the title very well.. and then you said you were still confused. "Kontakt" can mean both "contact" AND "plug".. A "Banankontakt" (Banana-plug) is not the actual test lead, but it IS a type of connector that is pretty much only used in test leads today, but they COULD be used in very-very old music systems or something.. It's just a single prong.. That is what a "Banankontakt" is.. "Kontakt av 3e graden" is the phrase for "Contact of the 3d degree", as used when discussing aliens.. ALSO they kind of use "Banana" as a theme, so.. I'd say they have smashed three different things together into the headline.. and.. As you guessed, it's KIND of a joke song, but I'd say more a childrens song done by serious musicians. "Trazan och Banarne" was the name of an old children's program where the two singers of Electric Banana Band played the rolls of a Tarzan:esque figure and an ape. They often sang songs just with an acoustic quitar or without music, BUT.. on occasion they played with the full band of Electric Banana Band and put on shades and what not.. It was an Awesome part of my childhood. OH! Not directly part of the head-line but they do use it later in the song.. The word.. "Takt".. Means rhythm/beat/pace.. .. and they sometimes during the "refrain" use the word "takt" alone as a sound-wise completelent to the "takt" in the end of the word "kontakt".
Some of the best gutarist in Sweden made this for fun. A side projekt😊 Put this on a party in Sweden whit 50+ people! Its rather fun, everyone knows the lyrics an dance to the funk!😁
Other suggestions for Swedish novelty songs like this one: Bernt Dahlbäck - Syster Jane Pierre Isacsson - Då går jag ner i min källare Ulla-Bella - Ulla-Bella rap Totte Wallin - Ryska posten Hemliga Byrån - Hej hej hemskt mycket Hej Little Gerhard - Den siste mohikanen (OK, I actually think this is too good to be novelty if you know what I mean, but some people consider it like that.)
Have you seen sällskapsresan? Lasse Åberg who plays in the sällskapsresan movies is also in Electronic banana band. Lasse and his friend Klasse (Trazan och Banarne) are originally comedians. I think almost every Swedish child born between 1970-2000 has a relationship whit electric banana band. In the 70-80,s Trazan och Barnarne also had a show on SVT. The first show called Trazan Apanson-julens konung was part off “jullovsmorgon” 1976. The story about Trazan och Banarne is somewhat off a play whit the Tarzan movies made in the 30,s and 40,s..
I don’t think 8-tracks were a thing in europe. I never saw one as a kid. They were big in cars in the US for a minute in the mid 70s, but americans were wayyy more well off then. Big cars, with lots of features. European cars of the 70s were budget cars, vw beetles, Ladas, Mini Coopers, Datsuns. So I think we skipped straight to compact cassettes. Also, my god this song is great!
Well, there are some of the best musicians in Sweden. The guitarist was Ted Gärdestads best friend and guitarist..... I remember that not only children watched Sommarlov to hear this!! I know I did!!
Regarding funky but silly songs. You should do Eddie Meduza "Reaktorn läck i Barsebäck". An artist somewhat comparable with GG Allin. Mostly an instrumental song, that some bizzare how has gotten a gigantic following in South America over the decades since he passed away.

You should also check out "Zwampen" and "Olyckans sång" by them!
And Min Piraja Maja
Fun fact. Tunnelbanans blåa säten med färgglada Stockholms landmärken, Globen, stadshuset osv. Designades av ena sångaren, Lasse Åberg 🙂
There is a bit to unpack here actually. This song came out in 1982, only five years after the huge blockbuster film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that everybody would have known about in 1982. And the words (what's that flying up there... It's the Twister!) are used in "Let's twist again" with Chubby Checker.
Janne Schaffer probably came up with the beat and riffs I'm guesing; and he worked with Ted Gärdestad, ABBA and TOTO.
Fun that you chose to react to this! A true classic altough it’s a child song. Check out Pelikanen, Min piraya Maja and Tarzan på middag as well.
IN 1982 WE ONLY HAD two TV channels one of which has kids programs for 30 minutes a day. This means that any song featured on the programme is etched in the mind of 90% of the kids and an instant evergreen regardless of quality
Interesting point!
They are not silly, they took children serious. 😉
Serious fun ;)
I´ve heard that the origin of this song is the fact that all fruits on earth can be said to be related to each other but bananas. One conspiracy hypothesis is therefore that the banana seed is brought to us from outer space. Anyhow. The groove in Electric Banana band is mostly because of Janne Schaffer, one of the best gitarrists in Sweden who has played with ABBA, Bob Marley and Toto. Back in the days quality and money was invested in children programs. :)
"has played with Bob Marley and Toto" är ju att TA I...
Well, given Janne Shaffer was in the band, of course the music is good. If you don't know him, just look him up. 😊
Lasse Åberg och Robert Broberg gick på Konstfack tillsammans.
This is a real Swedish classic - good choice!! And you should also listen to their other big Swedish classic hit: Zvampen !
Your name are not Winston 😆, please . Stop this . What är your name ? Is it Safe ? Is it Safe ? The drill is coming ? Is it Safe ?
Hahaha, oh dear... Brings back memories!

There is a live version from roskildefestivalen here on RUclips .. you can se all the people (now grown up) who listened to the song as children😁
I remember me playing that song out in the clubs a bit in to the 90’s. I think you need to see the TV-show to understand what it is all about!
Min favorit av Electric Banana Band är Zwampen 🍄
Min med! 👌
As a child in the late 70’s and early 80’s, this brings back memories.

Their show at the Hultsfred festival was legendary! We all grew up with it, it is a silly song for kids but still brings it!
I think as a Swedish kid born late 70's, this might be just the 3 time I hear this song in it's full -ish, it's just fun to see other hear it for first time
Great groove on this one; I was actually listening to this and some other of their songs just a couple of days ago.
In their jungle-themed childrens show, bananas were often featured or at least eaten 🙂
The intro to this is a parody on the classic "It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!" stick from DC Comics Superman (known in Sweden as Stålmannen, "Steel Man" in english.

One of the best Swedish songs EH-VURRR!! ✨👽🍌✨😎👍🏼

@@JonathanRollinssthlm305 Siw Malmkvist is a good shout, so many catchy songs and probably the best artist choice to react to from that era.
The song title is intended pun/a parody of Steven Spielbergs ”Close Encounters of the third kind” (the movie released in 1977) - if you know that, the lyrics will make more sense! ☺️
The were a really popular afternoon band on largest stage at Sweden Rock Festival a few years ago.
Schaffer had his legendars red guitar with. 🤘🏾
You should try this one it´s a duet, and they are not taking turns ; )
Bo Kaspers Orkester - Svårt att säga nej
That's actually a pretty good thing about Swedish music, we don't cut any corners just because it's music for children.
Cool Fact* The electric guitarist in their band was also the guitarist in ABBA
As so many before me said, the musicians here us no joke. Probably sold over 150 millions albums together(ABBA)
My favorit Electric Banana Band song is "Jag ska bli en byråkrat". 😄
They also released an english version of this song called "U.F.B (Unidentified flying banana". You might also check that one out. :)
Per Lindvall - the drummer on this song - is undoubtedly one of the worlds best drummers.
Please react to Looptroop 🤙
This song hit me right in the childhood! They're channeling George Clinton and Funkadelic for kids!
If you like the musicians in the song you should try Rongedal with there song " Who do you yhink your fooling" They where a part of Electric banan band as well as Janne Schaffer, one of the best guitarists in Sweden. Love your reactions btw.

So, putting quality into stuff meant for kids isn't actually illegal - who would have known?
The show that started all this sillyness got their intro from "Sir Duke" by mr Stevie Wonder. Godd observation!
Över 30000 pers i publiken. Det var magiskt 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Har du hört något med systrarna i First sid kit. De är värda att lyssna på
G-rated Frank Zappa. This is like "Dancing Fool".
A side projekt😊
Put this on a party in Sweden whit 50+ people! Its rather fun, everyone knows the lyrics an dance to the funk!😁
Got me thinking about Jean Banan - Sean Den Förste Banan :), it's a banger!
Other suggestions for Swedish novelty songs like this one:
Bernt Dahlbäck - Syster Jane
Pierre Isacsson - Då går jag ner i min källare
Ulla-Bella - Ulla-Bella rap
Totte Wallin - Ryska posten
Hemliga Byrån - Hej hej hemskt mycket Hej
Little Gerhard - Den siste mohikanen
(OK, I actually think this is too good to be novelty if you know what I mean, but some people consider it like that.)
John me - Love is my drug. Swedish guy with a good voice
I think this song proves it possible that songs can be corny and smooth at once. ^^
Do Zwampen too :7
Have you seen sällskapsresan?
I have not seen that movie yet
@@JonathanRollinssthlm305 when you have watched the first three, you'll understand absolutely everything about sweden :).
Åk till Lasse Åbergs museum i Bålsta! Massa Musse Pigg, konst och Trazan & Banarnes koja. Lasse själv brukar stå i kassan.
You should listen to Sverige by Kent. Very good song and most swedes likes the song aswell!
Got me thinking of the movie Smala susie where Susie is in love whit the monkey from this band
And Båtlåt!
Tips! Nicke och Nilla - Alla Balla, Shepp ohoj eller Tjaba Tjena Hallå (for kids)
Well, there are some of the best musicians in Sweden. The guitarist was Ted Gärdestads best friend and guitarist..... I remember that not only children watched Sommarlov to hear this!! I know I did!!
Regarding proper music for kids, "Kalle Svan - James & Karin" is quite funky. Lyrics is about a swan that .. swims?
Well on hte "banana" note... Have you listened to Sean Banan? :P since you like rap music it seems.
Breakbot - By Your Side, Part 2 isnt hiphop but sampled it
Trazan och banarne was a great kids show
I am 58 and I love this ... You should check out a live show from Gröna Lund, it will be better sound
Aaah, minnen!
Regarding funky but silly songs. You should do Eddie Meduza "Reaktorn läck i Barsebäck". An artist somewhat comparable with GG Allin. Mostly an instrumental song, that some bizzare how has gotten a gigantic following in
South America over the decades since he passed away.
banan kontakt av tredje graden = banana contact of the third degree in english :)
You need to react to "Eddie Meduza - Torgnys Svettiga Ansikte"
Forgot how good this song is. It was the shit
nice smile
