Derek started on our grandmother's piano. I don't think he was more than five yrs old. My father gave him one of his first keyboards. It has been fun going to his shows for the last forty years. D is a good cousin. Cat works very hard.

Been following Derek since he was with Dream Theater. When his first solo record dropped, I was utterly floored and bewildered. This band was truly a revelation with its blend of everything I craved as a young aspiring musician: prog, metal, and jazz-informed harmony - a real formative influence on me as a teen and young adult. A good friend and I were lucky to catch them on the Moonbabies tour in 2002; one of my own fusion bands performed a transcription of Poland in our live set shortly after Quantum released…
Just a stellar, phenomenal group with unique writing/arrangements and peerless chops!

"I'm a big Macalpine fan" - Me too! Have you heard the 4 CAB studio albums & 2 live records? Also Live In Toky with Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine & Sherinian is tremendous (what a killer version of "Stratus"). I wish he'd do more with Sherinian, even outside of Planet X...Was just listening to the track "The Ultimatum" that he recorded with Jeff Loomis - what a shred-fest!

I've been really looking forward to a ranking the albums for Planet X ever since the one for Derek Sherinian and you guys absolutely delivered, this catalogue is incredibly strong with no clunkers at all.
    1. Quantum
My all time favourite Planet X album, every song from top to bottom is kick ass with jaw dropping playing from Sherinian and Donati, 'Alien Hip Hop, 'Matrix', 'Poland' 'Quauntum Factor' are amazing but the highlights for me are the two featured Allan Holdsworth tracks 'Desert Girl and 'The Thinking Stone', he sounds amazing as always. Top notch drumming from Virgil Donati and badass keyboard playing from Derek Sherinian who has a giant sound all throughout the music. At times, he sounds like a mixture of a guitar player and a full on orchestra. Brett Garsed really tears it up with his guitar playing, Rufus Philpot & Jimmy Johnson both sound solid with their bass playing. There is plenty of great material to get your teeth into.
    2. Moonbabies
The perfect blend of metal meets fusion and sounds completely fresh. The core of Sherinian, MacAlpine and Donati sound really tight, Tom Kennedy, Billy Sheehan and Jimmy Johnson who are featured on a number of track all lay down very solid grooves. All 3 bass players sound great . 'Digital Vertigo', 'Ground Zero', 'Interlude In Milan' are the standouts for me but the rest of it is equally epic and i really dig the jazz hooks that are going on.
    3. Universe
A very solid debut that really sets the tone for what Planet X as a band and it's a very good one. 'Kings Of The Universe' is epic, 'Pods Of Trance' kicks a lot of ass and for me, the heaviest track of the whole album, 'Clonus' is a badass opener, the whole album is brilliant and everyone sounds incredible. MacAlpine's guitar work is on fire, Sherinian's keyboard playing is on full display and he really stands out the most, Donati's drumming is all over the music and gives the band a muscular sound. Tom Kennedy who plays bass on the whole album matches up very well with the 3 powerhouses and his bass playing is solid.
Great show as always and keep up the good work. Thank you so much for doing this.

They're all equally good. Allan Holdsworth on 2 songs makes the difference for me.

    As I hear them:

For me the ranking is pretty clear.
Quantum is at 3. It has some real high points, and some drumming that even 16 years later basically can't be replicated by anyone else on the planet, but some of tracks are a bit dull by Planet X standards. I feel like Derek doesn't shine as much as the other records but it's hard to put my finger on why.
Universe is at 2. It took me a while to get my head around Tony's tone and style when I first heard the album, as I didn't know his solo material at that time, but now I totally get it and really enjoy what he brings. I dig the heavier feel as well. I know the intro to King of the Universe is a bit over the top but that's what the band was meant to be all about, and the song is just nuts (who writes double-bass drum grooves in 19/16?!?!).
Moonbabies is at 1, and not only on this list but it's the greatest album I've ever heard (with apologies to Catch Thirty-Three by Meshuggah, which is probably the only album that pushes it close). I'm not even sure I'd call Moonbabies music; it's almost like some other mystical art form that I've never heard the like of before or since.
Story time: I saw Virgil live at Sligo Jazz Festival in Ireland in 2017 when he was playing more of his own material (sadly didn't play any PX tunes), and got to speak to him briefly after the show. As a twist of fate the show was on 29 July, exactly 15 years since the US release of Moonbabies. I asked him if he meant to write the deepest and most incredible musical experience, to which his answer was: "no; I just wrote what I heard." An incredibly humble guy but it was a real privilege to see him live, and I will treasure the signed drumhead that is framed and hung on my wall.
As a bonus, if we included Derek's Planet X solo album it would slot in ahead of Universe at 2.

6:22 I don’t believe Derek was too into Nord (then Clavia) during Universe. Definitely Trinity/Triton mostly to my ears. He went hard on Nord for Moonbabies, and going forward. There are are some crazy pictures of his awesome Nord rig during the Moonbabies tour. But all his signature lead sounds come from Korg hardware. Until recently, where he’s slowly leading more and more with his Nord keys.

Very very good Sherinian/Donati prog/fusion band with some great guitarists: Alex Machacek, Tony MacAlpine, Alan Holdsworth (on a couple of Quantum tracks), Brett Garsed. Dave LaRue (Steve Morse Band) played bass for a few years...My ranking of the 5 albums I own:
1, Universe - some MacAlpine greatness on this one!
    2. Tie: Moonbabies & Quantum. Pretty close to Universe, not much separates these 3 albums...
    3. Live From Oz - more MacAlpine smoke & Simon Phillips mixed it
    4. Planet X - the "worst" but still a record most bands would kill to make. Garsed smokes on some of these tracks
A friend of mine has a cd called The Making Of Universe that I haven't heard (might be a boot)...Looks like there's an Anthology set coming later this year
