INTRODUCTION
I'm Clement, nice to meet you! I have a passion for Indie Games due to how fun, creative and OUT OF THIS WORLD they can be, so this channel helps get the word out on the Best Indie Games.

It's strange how the mainstream just covers some indie games (hollow knight, undertale, among us, vampire survivors, etc...) When there's so many more that deserve the attention of more people like the ones on this list.
Yeah Right you nailed it! There are many independent game developed Metroidvania that is so much better than Hollow Knight. The programmers, publishers and their games must be recognized widely for their hard work. In other words, the games you want many people to pay attention to is what we call UNDERRATED!
Any of these that are better than hollow knight on playstation? Playing aeterna noctis which is pretty cool.
@@awakenedsoul2638you say that, but he still put Hollow Knight at the top of the list.
@@mick2287
Because that game was his favourite metroidvania of all time so we will have "A BIG BIAS" here when it comes to what games is the number 1 metroidvania of all time in which "I HEAVILY DISAGREE".......
@@awakenedsoul2638 that’s not really a bias. The entire list is with Metroidvania’s HE thinks are the best. What do you want him to put at number 1 other than his favourite? It’ll likely be the one he sees as best.
Also, you may heavily disagree; but he’s not alone. Hollow Knight is by far the most popular Metroidvania since the original Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night.
Ender Lillies was amazing, incredible OST too by Mili, pretty solid top 5.
A game that must be treasure a lot like any other gorgeous and cute as Fk games :3
A story that I had trouble finishing not because of difficulty or desire but because I didn't want to hurt the little princess anymore 😢
Couple more hidden gem metroidvania titles I wanna highlight:
_Pseudoregalia_ - this one's the most odd duck of the lot, since it's a 3D platformer closer to Castlevania 64 than Symphony of the Night, but it definitely has all the trappings of a metroidvania, with new abilities unlocked through progression and a large interconnected map.
_Alwa's Awakening/Alwa's Legacy_ - the first is an NES-styled vania with magic spells used to solve puzzles and fight bosses in creative ways. The second is an upscaled reboot of the first with brand new mechanics like skill trees to give your spells brand new properties.
_Vision Soft Reset_ - this game uses the idea of time travel in ways that Luna Nights never was brave enough to try. Rewinding time, stopping time, you can even create alternate timelines by going back to older saves and making different choices.
_Aquaria_ - beautiful title from Derek Yu and the late Alec Holowka with a great underwater setting and some incredibly unique gameplay mechanics.
_Pharaoh Rebirth_ - an overlooked gem from the creators of Luna Nights and Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. The first in their stylish pixel art metroidvania triliogy.
_Wuppo_ - this one is much more story and puzzle-focused than combat or platforming, which is a little unusual for the genre, but it's still a terribly charming and unique game with a colorful world to explore.
_Ghost 1.0_ - a fun little metroid-heavy vania on a space station with the ability to hack into enemy robots and control them and their skills. There's plenty of secrets and jokes, and since it's from the creator of Unmetal it has the same sense of humor.
_Lost Ruins_ - definitely the most anime of the lot, but that's not a bad thing at all. Lots of character customization and variety in weapons and skills, and you can even replay the game with new characters.
I'd add Astalon Tears of the Earth
love seeing afterimage on here! its personally my fav mv due to the action combat and beautiful world/music
yup the best Metroidvania
I just finished Pronty, and I feel like it deserves to be on this list in place of some others, its so unique with you being underwater which results in Pronty being able to go up, down, left and right and results in unique abilities to progress, instead of your standard double jump and wall climb. Combat is also unique, as you control another character that can go around practically any ware. It also has some of the most unique enemies and boss creatures with they being combinations of Trash and fish. The story is equally fantastic and intriguing.
Pretty nice list. A lot of variety even when it is one genre only. Also, nice mix between hidden gems and more popular ones.
Glad you enjoyed it
I remember playing Steamworld Dig 2... it was very relaxing and fun to play!
Great game!
Thank you for mentioning Phoenotopia. It's one of favorite games and it's shame more people don't know about it.
I absolutely love phoenotopia but don't know if I will ever be able to fully complete it again just because of how brutally difficult it is towards the end😂 I loved my entire first but it also caused me so much frustration in a few sections in the latter portion of the game lol
Nice list! Besides Hollow Knight, Phoenotopia: Awakening and Haiku: The Robot (not on the list) are my favorites. Although very different, all three games gave me the same satisfaction that other MVs could not reach.
Awesome list 👍 but Death's Gambit deserve a place in the top 20, in my opinion.
Honorable mentions: Valdis Story, Sundered, Dust, Pronty, Moonscar, Lone Fungus, Monster Boy, Iconoclasts
outstanding list! so glad you added afterimage!
Cheers 🍻
Infernax was the best one for me! Love the artstyle and the brutality
Surprisingly gory!
The Local Co-op makes Infernax even better!! Amazing game.
Excellent list, as always.
My favorites that aren't in this one are:
Aeterna Noctis
Iconoclasts
And a special mention to Knight Witch, I don't think it's deserve to make on the top 20, but it has a unique subgenre that I loved.
Nice video. Could you make an updated video again with metroidvania hidden gems? ❤❤❤
Momodora should have a collection edition or something like that to be able to play the other games.
For more upcoming metroidvania catagory, there is an upcoming sequel for Timespinner. It's as good as it can be for the genre. The 1st game had multiple endings which is kinda cool, but personally at the time found it to be overwhelming for myself, if i ever revisit it maybe it will change my mind. Regardless, i'm willing to check it out once it releases, which won't be for a long time until it is decided when it is finished.
If you haven't already highlighted it or even the 1st game, i highly suggest it. This one maybe somewhat underrated.
Infernax is absolutely my #1 pick and probably one of my favorite video games I’ve ever played.
I want you to know I literally bought every game on this list after watching this video 😂 I loved these kinds of games since I stumbled upon salt and sanctuary years ago and had no idea there was so many good ones.
Yo! Baller move. Enjoy!
1:26 Monster Sanctuary looks interesting.
Try it!
@@ClemmyGames Name of the game on the thumbnail?
@@OrichalcumHammerLol shut up
Thank you for this, never heard of touhou so im excited rn
I absolutely loved phoenotopia but don't know if I will ever be able to fully complete that game again😂 it just gets so brutally difficult towards the end with some of the platforming challenges especially in the underground military base
Another amazing metroidvania worth mentioning is HAAK. It's one of the best and most atmospheric metroidvanias I've ever played. Highly underrated and it flew under a lot of people's radar I think. The vibe in this game reminds me of something like blade runner with a dark dystopian cyberpunk future and the soundtrack is excellent and matches the world perfectly.
At the start, I felt Haak has the potential to be the best MV ever. The atmosphere was something else. But sadly, the developer's can't keep with that pace and the game drops a lot towards the end. =/
Yoku's island is a masterpiece. I highly recommend it.
I was super paranoid about that disconnect with ender lilies... didn't even think about it again after 5 minutes, and I'm extremely picky about stuff like that
I recommend the last faith. Having a blast, game is underrated as hell.
Great list as always Clemmy! Not the order I would've made the list, but I love and respect your choices. So many of these games I still need to play! I didn't really like bloodstained, so I don't agree with your placement.
If I may a little tip. When you introduce the game have the name UI on the screen for a few seconds not the whole time your gameplay clip is playing I couldnt actually see the UI of a few games because it was over the whole bottom screen :) but dont mind me I am not a video editor. It was just a bit distracting. Edit: and where are my manners. Thank you for the list will try some of these. So far the most intriguing was Grime (the black hole one) :)
Thanks for the suggestion. I've gone through phases with this in the past and through polling the community they preferred the title to be on screen at all times
@@ClemmyGames In that case I am not the one you should listen to 🙂
The dev behind Blasphemous 2 was inspired by Metalgearsolid's Foxhound bosses and Sekiro's lady butterfly boss which explain the human type bosses for the most part.
Context has been added now your own opinion come into play
We need more Monster Sanctuary like metroidvania style. IMO.
For me, GRIME is higher on my list, but happy it's getting some shine at number 9!
Nice list. I love Hollow Knight of course, but Ender Lilies is maybe my favorite. May I ask if you played The Last Faith ? I'm curious about your opinion about it.
I have! It’s very souls-sy, not bad!
@@ClemmyGames I'm playing it right now, I like it too^^
Phenotopia is NOT as easy as the visuals would have you believe.
Aeterna Noctis deserves to be on here
So I’ve heard
I played Infernax either late last year or early this year. I absolutely loved it. They definitely managed to capture that 8 bit feel. Some other great games on this list: I had no idea what to expect out of Messenger and was one of my favorite games of the last few years. Axiom Verge 2 was fun. I kind of wish it had more tie-in to the original one because that was another one that just pulled me right in like I was a kid again. Loved it. I enjoyed the sequel but probably won't go back to explore more and speed run like with the first. I'll probably skip Blasphemous 2. I loved the first game through most of it, but it just kind of lost me toward the end with frustrating combat and repetitous attempts at the last couple bosses. Never did beat it. Loved the art and music but it just ended up falling flat for me in combat gameplay.
Ender Lillies became one of my favorite Metroidvanias but also favorite indie games of all time over night when it dropped! Also love to see the shoutout for FIST, great list as always
It's barely a metroidvania
I own Bloodstained game, final boss Bael is very very difficult, I died many times.
Did you play Grime? Shapely Fidus is a very difficult boss.
I have so much fun with Laika at the moment. The most refreshing Metroidvania I played in a long time. So underrated at the moment and more people should play it.
PS. No Ori? Normaly I hate it when people try to push their games, but Ori is Top 3 Material.
There we have it
Haha. Watch been place 16 and 15. you were called out
@@ClemmyGames Ok. Now I get it. I always watch the Videos and skip through Games I have seen plenty of Times. After watching your Channel for years now. Shame on me. Somehow I skipped the whole game oO
Can't wait for Laika to come to consoles. It's gotten great reviews. I think once it releases to more playforms, it'll garner more attention.
Axiom verge was fantastic. The second game was good too but the first one was better I agree.
The record of lodos war got my interest
All the great ones are here!
And if anyone is looking for other recommendations, Timespinner is quite good. It resembles a bit of Order of Ecclesia in terms of gameplay.
Steam World Dig 2 is AWESOME 👍👍!! I like it very much. Give it a shot and try it out. It's more for "kids", but I (my opinion) have enough from seeing so much Blood in Games! Real World is bloody enough for me. Even Robots are bleeding RED. There is not so much RED Oils for Machines. More yellow to brown when new and silver (That's make my Gears grind) or black (Time to change).
Anyway enjoy what you play or do and have a awesome Time, share love and huge each other more!! Greatings toooooo all you in the hole World😊😊
Personally I really like Transiruby, in part for it being more honest about itself than many metroidvanias.
that is a very charming game! unfortunately it is very short and more on the easy side in terms of challenge.
Eventually every indie developer that success, is not going to be so indie anymore, but if they keep doing games like in the beginning and with 16, 8, etc bit art that are full games, no micro transaction BS, then I think we should keep considering them INDIE, because they are still doing what AAA companies are not, and that is making fun, complete games made by gamers for gamers, not just corporate greed or investors happiness.
True, but I think very few indie developers still think to keep making games cuz they like
Once dev teams reach huge staff sizes and big budgets they don't need channels like this one to call attention to them. Quality studios like Supergiant should be celebrated, for sure, but I prefer learning about cool passion projects.
Astlibra Revision is missing from the list :( ... that game is really dope though
Please alk about Whisper: in the Dark
Please promote more hidden gem like Phoenotopia. Its a great game but too underappreciated.
Salt and Sanctuary should be on here. While it has very strong Dark Souls influences, it's overall structure is very much a metroidvania.
The awesomeness that is Hollow Knight could not be stressed enough
Hollow Knight, the GOAT of all metroidvania indie games!!
Phoenotopia Awakening was an awesome game, I pray for a sequel someday.
I heard it really didn't sell well but hopefully the devs can be inspired by enough encouragement eventually.
My gripe with plenty of metroidvania games is, when u go back to previous screen they always respawn enemies excessively like we never been there before. I can sympathize the old way of doing things because in old times hardware limitation contribute to it, but nowadays no way u can't put extra code so it's won't respawn immediately like that. It makes me hard to persuade myself to keep playing. I'd appreciate if there is way if these gripe of mine have a name & can be identified so i can chose to avoid, or not.
Recently i played rune factory 5 I like the way we can decide to kill the gate immediately just let enemies respawn infinitely. I wish metroidvania genre can adopt this.
I would argue that the re-spawn of enemies are necessary for metroidvania games in terms of dropping currency or whatever you need for the specific game. If you eliminate the enemies and they don't come back you would be surprised how much less currency you would get, which would result in less abilities you need for those games.
@@CheddahSlammer Of course we should able to grind the way the gameplay requires. What i mean with the extra code is, give it a breather for the player. It felt too robotic & mechanistic by just a slight second we get to the previous screen, all the enemies respawn immediately, not even a minute would the landscape felt restful after we clean it. It exacerbate fatigue while playing.
I really wish that Steamworld Dig would continue.
I’m sure steamworld dig 3 is in development somewhere…
Lodoss’ OAVs and Series are from the 90’s not the 80’s. Good list though.
I hope astalon gets a sequel. Great game
Playing through Blasphemous 2 right now. I actually like it better than the first one! And I love the first one.
I have a weak laptop(core 2 duo with intel 965 graphics) so Iam only restricted to whatever can run on OpenGL 2.0!
I don't buy much games often looking for stuff under 15 USD when sale hits 😂These what runs :
Cave Story + (Replayed it 4 times, 2 with each character yet finished Ballos ONCE to never manage to reach him again!)
Valdis Story (Toggle Low Graphics, Like DMC games Has bloody palace unlocked after you finish)
Nightmare: The Lunatic
Katana Zero (Minor Slow downs)
TOUHOU Luna Nights (Slow downs)
Konosuba Revival of Beldia ----> no one talks about
Iconoclasts
Momodora 3
Stuff I want to try:
Grim Guardians Demon Purge
Heart Forth, Alicia
Unsighted (Isometric Metroidvania?)
Bruh, Laika Aged Through Blood is right there
Need to work through that one
15:23 can someone please write what games he was saying?
Eiyuden chronicles
yeah pretty sure he said Eiyuden Chronicle and Suikoden
Yes
@@GiacomoCarali Thank you
no prob👌
Phoenotopia deserve at least top 3
What's happening?! Second short today that the linked video doesn't contain the game showed here.
Can you make a video with update information of indie games that are coming? maybe, like Silk Song, Falling Frontier and so own.
Of course. Those are coming up
@@ClemmyGames looking forward for them.
i wish valdis story abysall city was mentioned as in honorable mentions atleast here gameplay wise it is one of the best platforming is its weakest point
Combat heavy for sure. It was in consideration!
Astalon is one of the best.
Hollow knight! What a brilliant and really unforgiving game. Love and hate the game. Still playing it now lol
Nice
when someone ask what is perfection, I show them Hollow Knight
Infernax - Coop update! Amazing. Love the original and now playing with a friend against pixel art unholy hordes. Perfect.
Astalon - Dig the 8-bit pixel and 3 playable character choices also.
The Messenger - Could be pick of the bunch for me: Just has the full package with great pixel art and some of the speed-runs people do are truly unbelievable!
Rabi-Rabi - Apart from going for the cute visuals, it looks totally nuts!
Blasphemous 2 - Showing once again my strong bias for pixel art but holy-moly, it just looks so good!
Touhou Luna Nights - Another quirky cute character - but still solid design and resting animation shows neat touch to small details, then the freeze time mechanic with flying kitchen-knives looks like very solid and satisfying game-play decision-making! Looks like a cracker-jack !
In all honesty ALL the other games look very good as well....... Rock-solid genre for indies for sure.
Silk Song.
Toho Luna Nights is an awesome game, though a bit too linear to be called a metroidvania.
Also, Blasphemous is a far better game than Blasphemous 2.
Alwa's Legacy, beautiful game.
Discovering this channel has been harmful to my wallet.
Man o man am I sick of the anime games it’s endless
Honestly Moonlaw deserves a shout out, excellent free metroidvania.
I wish that rabi wasn't so icky, it mechanically seems neat
you deliberately avoided THE LAST FAITH bro what a shame
Check the date of publish
Its ok to not put Ori since its Microsoft Studios
yeah
This list kind of pisses me off. Guacamelee should be in the top 10.
There are far, FAR, too many souls-like metroidvanias that are being over highlighted and overhyped. Super Metroid is an accessible game. Most of the souls-like clones are hack trash that only have their difficulty gimmick and hand-me down art style to depend on.
Guacamelee by contrast is a true original, anyone can play, with unique mechanics that deserves mountains more praise than most of the games on this list.
Interesting that you chose Guacamelee 1 ahead of 2.
Ender Liles has a special place in my heart. Dead Cells is still a lil better than Hollow Knight, but great list!
Dead cells is a rogue lite
@@ClemmyGames .........you're absolutely RIGHT haha

Thanks for sharing!
I'm an ignorant player of games, so it's not within me to attempt that. I think I was just trying to build a library so I could reach for a title when the mood hits. I may also reduce rating games to a fun/not fun system. Yoku is fun. To the current me, Hollow Knight is not fun.@@notIntoRUclipssStupidRules
What about the last faith
Its bloodborne x blasphemous
Good game (wasn’t out when this video released)
IMHO Afterimage is sadly unplayable on the Switch.
Why?
@@Scudyero When I played the game it was plagued by a terrible performance and costly slowdowns. Maybe this was fixed with updates later. While both were manageable in early stages, with increased playtime and especially with more difficult boss fights the problems killed all the fun. Timing and executing combos/moves are vital in Afterimage. With "warping" bosses and certain enemies it was just a pain.
On top of that the overall development is lacking: a convoluted and uninteresting story, repetition for repetition sake and hiding the best equipment behind ridicules challenges made me sell my copy.
Messenger cool platformer, in Rabi Ribi cool bosses but both of them are mediocre how metroidvania. Blasphemous 2 I will prefer the first.
Hollow Knight... Ok, then...
I like Bread and Indie´s like our Best Indie Games ;)
Aquaria? Even Knytt Stories is better than a pinball game 😐
"Souldiers" is also a very good metroidvania
It is sad, that you mentioned some really weak games and forgot the good once
It's a subjective list and there are 100s of good MVs out there, not all will make every list.
PLAY ATO!!!!!!
Love: Hollow Knight, Ender Lilies, Astalon, Afterimage (ty for getting these last two on the list)
Like: Steamworld Dig 2, Deedlit, Guacamelee
Did not care for: Blasphemous (1), Bloodstained, Yoku's Island Express
REALLY did not care for: Momodora Reverie Under Moonlight
I should really give a try: Touhou Luna Knights, Rabi-Ribi, The Messenger
Not gonna lie, it took me like 10 minutes to realize your speaking english. lol
Can't really respect a list like this with so many souls-likes at the top.
Its amazing to me how SOULDIERS its not on the list .. it was better the 90% on the games on this list..what a miss.. that being said I really enjoy your videos.. kudos to you
Ah… I’m so tired of Hollow Knight
Plenty of others to play!
Blasphemous was very enjoyable for me I'm currently going through the sequel
I hate to say it but you may want to look up a guide if you want to start on the good ending
Its convoluted
I like the list overall, but I'd like to mention that you can't really make these sort of video lists, without at least mentioning the two top games of the 90s in the genre, the ones that time still can't bend and the ones that still hold up great in the genre, in absolutely every department that matters. Super metroid and castlevania sotn can't be missing from such lists man, and its sad for me to see games with flaws such as bloodstained be so top in the list without the 2 kings being mentioned at all. Amazing SNES games like those still hold up insanely well. I mean come on! Its disrespect to the genre at this point forgetting them completely. The whole genre owes so much to them and they are still insane fun to play even now.
The video is on indie games?
Where is Death's Gambit? I guess it demands too much from the mainstream gamers
Bloodstained?! How much did they pay you? That game stinks on ice!
Bloodstained. . . That is terrible. It was terrible on cartridge and its terrible on digital. Crashes, bugs. It has crashed on me 3x as many hours as I have played.
Cartridge?
@@ClemmyGames both. I invested twice.
It sux on the switch but I had no issues on the ps5 and it is quite good.
boring hollow knight , that game is not the best metroidvania stop repeating that bullshit.
Someone finally says it....I'm in the process of completing hollow knight, and I have to say, it's not that great of a game. Actually I wish that I hadn't even started it. Don't understand why people think it's such a great game.
First you talk about exploration being big part of metroidvanias then you rate Bloodstained on second place? Its the worst most linear Metroidvania i played, zero exploration, no multiple routes, you cant even get bosses in different order, how is this garbage better than Afterimage that gave you the same level of freedom in exploring as Hollow Knight and Ender Lilies. Those 3 games literally should been the Top 3.
While I haven't played Afterimage yet, the argument I have seen against it, is their is too much freedom that its almost a 2d sandbox. Specifically some described going all the way one way then get stuck because they don't have the write ability, but then go another way and equally get stuck. While both Hollow Kinght and Ender Lilies have exploration, they is still direction were to go.
@@CheddahSlammer but bloodstained does not
Hahahaha not a shitty list but almost shitty. Hollow Knight again as number one. Damn, its almost 2024 this is still number one in your list. This is DOWN RIGHT FAVORITISM! I do not care if you find my comment disrespectful it is up to you how you feel about this. There are many best metroidvania that can blow out the window Hollow Knight. You have an open mind, you open your eyes to different things but have favoritism because Hollow Knight is your favourite! Although I played Hollow Knight and nearing in finishing it, I am waiting for the sequel of Blood Stained: Ritual Of The Night, Enderr Lilies: Quietous Of The Night, Touhou Luna Nights, Steam World Dig, Record Of Lodoss War: Deedlit In Wonder Labyrinth and Rabi-Ribi. You forgot to include these two that should be in your list by removing some games because your list is only a Top-20, Wonder Boy: The Dragons Trap and Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom.
