"I want to see churches care for their rebels." You completely encapsulated my life Paul. I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school, parents weren't raised in the church, parents divorced when I was 11, family imploded into to hate and poverty, family devolved into materialist American consumer culture. Although I left the church I kept God in my heart and made a promise to the sun that I shall find God's name. I embarked on an adventure for the rest of my life determined to find the name of God and understand what was going on. I'm now, married with 2 kids and attend a Lutheran church. I've always been an outsider asking questions to fully understand the religion and history and because I am someone from the edge and am too different for religious types and hated by ideologues for pointing out their lack of wisdom. When Johnathon talks about Saint Christopher and I hear the story I always find myself weeping. That story resonates with me so much and I see myself in it. I so badly want to be accepted by a community so that I can be useful and loved for my scars. Thank you for all your videos and helping me feel like I belong.
May you be able to give the love you have, and find the love you need.

I played music for fifty-seven years. It was an intersection of giftedness and calling, a vocation, and driven by belief. I wrote albums and sold albums and performed as a single-act folksinger/songwriter,. I sang only what I wanted to sing, and I really, really, really got a kick out of getting paid for it. One time a guy gave me six thousand dollars up front to write six songs for him and his ol' lady. I roofed my house with that money. I had a salary and a piggy bank where I kept my tips,. That tickled me about half to death. I am so happy to know Jonathan is getting paid, and it wouldn't occur to me to think less of him for it., and as far as I'm concerned he's a minister, just like our estimable Paul. I'm on the coast of Georgia, but if I have a pastor, it is he.
Jonathan is an Orthodox Christian. We don’t have an “American Orthodox Church” yet, but there is a Greek Orthodox Church in Savannah. You don’t have to be Orthodox to make an appointment with an Orthodox priest to inquire about Orthodoxy or to even receive some personal spiritual counseling. God bless!

Weaponized compassion is so elegant and deep. I had to pause and just consider that thought.
@Phlebas I thought more along the lines of how Ted Bundy would fake a disability in order to trap naturally compassionate women. The idea of manipulating the kind, or using kindness as a Trojan horse.
@@FindingTheNarrative Yes. I would say as a culture we have devalued kindness and compassion out of fear of that manipulation of it. It makes me sad. But it won’t stop me from aiming to be genuinely kind and compassionate.
@Evan Brooks I've found more and more often, that when I try to engage with people in a compassionate manner, no matter the sincerity, they are deeply suspicious and assume it is method to trick or subvert them. Our society is so upside down that any display of compassion is deemed false, because "no one acts like that." Honestly, Idk how we recover from that?

Amazing talk. I married into a French Canadian family while I’m from an Asian immigrant family, was raised baptist, stopped practicing my faith for a while and by God’s grace, converted to Catholicism last year. Thank you Jonathan for your insight on Catholicism in Quebec. I knew about the quiet revolution, but you articulated it really well and helped me to understand where my fellow French Canadians are coming from. There are a lot of young people at my parish in my secular city and quite a few French Canadians as well. I think you two are right, materialism is coming to an end and we’re on the edge of something new.

Jonathan was a big part of my discovery of Orthodoxy. Because he didn't have a community I looked for videos from Orthodox priests and ended up at my local parish which is very small and completely wonderful.
Trying to sum up your vocations and this comes to mind “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”

Safetyism is more of the obsession of the material in this world. Too much of modern religion and scientism focuses on everything that is material. JBP puts it best when he notes that just because something doesn’t actually exist, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t real - like stories and how they move us even if they are fictional.
The fear of death is more of that obsession of the material world. I don’t fear death. I fear the absence of purpose, of meaning, of hope much more than of death. Having experienced severe chronic depression, I often during that time wished I was dead because at least the hollowness of feeling nothing and the fear that the feeling of existence would never come back would at least end. I would not ever wish that on anyone. Feeling like a void of being is a known horror. I’d much rather take my chances on the other side lol.
Here in Denmark they also demand churches to limit the numbers of people, to show Corona passports, and wearing masks until you find a seat. They also limited the Corona pass to last from 12 months to 5, pushing people for a third jab. The new omicron variant is luckily loosening the grip
What an edifying conversation to watch today. Both of you are a big influence in my life . Here in Tasmania we are not officially in lockdown but so many restrictions it is not worth going out in public. My carers have been stopped, no visitors, masking up to go to church. You are helping me to keep my sanity. The Lord is mightily present in my life but it is also necessary to have physical contacts. Bless you both, may your ministries flourish.
I am an evangelical one generation away from Quebec Catholicism. Here in Northern Alberta, I am waiting for a way to find a way toward Orthodoxy.
this point about catholics being too nice and guilty I think is true of protestants as well it's a result of western liberalism, Chad the alcoholic is not nice and only semi guilty and I think his papacy could bring alot of restoration

"The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”" The more I think about this humble icon carver with no advanced degree at the fringe of Orthodoxy, the more I wonder who is this man that pastors, priests, archbishops and uni professors listen to🤔. Paul, have you ever wondered about the Pageau phenomenon? I think he likes dog-headed people because he himself is a strange embodiment of this new foregrounding of the periphery. He is at the margins of the minorities: a French in mostly Anglophone Canada, an Orthodox with the Protestant background in a Catholic-turned- atheist part of the country, and even his Orthodox box is a marginal one, OCA, not some major Orthodox churches. Even his craft, icon carving, not painting, is far from being mainstream. Nothing is normal or typical about Jonathan, yet somehow he himself seems very grounded and balanced and manages to focus on the most central, nuclear issues.

He seems to think religion in general Orthodoxy in particular is the answer to all our questions and problems. Do you agree?
@@vixendixon6943 Pageau thinks ritual and religion is inevitable, there's no not participating in either of them. You can reject this or that specific ritual or religion, but another will fill that vacuum, whether you want it or not.
As far as Orthodoxy, I would guess he believes it is the ultimate manifestation of Christian symbolism and ritual, therefore making it the ultimate example of how to participate in the Christian story. That's just my guess about what his opinion would be, but for me, it is my conclusion for myself.
@@ButterBobBriggs Religion vs Science has been my focus of recent times. More I learn more I am convinced that what we labelled as religious experiences for thousands of years are just symbolic and abstract manifestations of what science in general and philosophy in main is putting into spoken word now as We understand WE more and more.. The problem always has been finding a unifying narrative so we could coexist compete cooperate. I find his own journey that brought him to Orthodoxy, through so many different narratives he discarded on his way to becoming an Orthodox, more scientific than religious.
I agree so much with Jonathan's idea of "saving the reenchantment".
It is encouraging to see so many people having these kinds of dialogues, and I hope to launch a podcast soon centered around meaning and narrative in the tech industry - I do not see this topic referenced often enough, especially in tech circles.
A couple Jaron Lanier quotes hit me recently:
"Technologists provide tools that can improve people's lives. But I want to be clear that I don't think technology by itself improves people's lives, since often I'm criticized for being too pro-technology. Unless there's commensurate ethical and moral improvements to go along with it, it's for naught."
and
"It is impossible to work in information technology without also engaging in social engineering."
I think it is important to reach not only the people who create these technologies, but also the large group of technologically-minded "early adopters", as their ethics, preferences and expectations greatly inform what new technologies are introduced and how those technologies become integrated into society.
I wondered about a different model - that in the medieval world, say, a person might relate to their local holy well, local holy saints and stories, local wise woman, the stained glass and statuary of nearby religious buildings (religious houses as much as churches), family traditions and heirlooms, and their priest for the sacraments. This makes modern churchgoing look remarkably monochrome in comparison - a homogeneous combo of church, priest/minister and liturgy/service. So now, as people can, they reach out elsewhere too.

Great discussion. I really enjoyed Jonathan's thoughts on the decline of Catholicism in Quebec/rise of secularism/nationalism. I hope to see more from him on this fascinating (and sad) case study in our backyard or in my case my own country.
I think that the motives behind the attempt of Canadians to so distance themselves from the Catholic Church ought be better interrogated.. whilst the Church's role in the crimes against the natives is unquestionable one wonders if this might not be an attempt to shift the blame for Canada's genocidal origins completely onto it and away from Canadians.. as Jonathon said it is those Canadians who were those Catholics. this comes of as an inauthentic attempt to run away from one's history..
Remember only Quebec was RC, and after British conquest of Quebec the "French Catholic" elites were replaced by "Anglo Protestant" elites. Later the area was split between the eastern french speaking part called Lower Canada and the western english speaking part called Upper Canada. Upper Canada became staunchly Orange i.e. anti-catholic and anti-french. In lower-canada french and catholics became side-lined. If you wanted to be successful you had to distance yourself and family from those traditions. So I find it unbelievable that a WASP government would allow catholic institutions to educate the native children. How was that even negotiated and allowed? I can see how the catholic institutions would want to indoctrinate but why would the British government allow or even encourage it?
An absolutely wonderful conversation! Your discussion of community reminded me of Byrne Power's latest video on L'Abri in which he stressed the importance of meeting together face to face. As much as we all enjoy seeing you two on our screens, interacting with you guys in person is what we would really like to do.

At 1:19:27, that was exactly the point that drove my partner away from the church and he refuses to go back. He had a lot of theological problems, he was spiritually thirsty but nobody would look under what he was saying to see his true feelings. They would just tell him to pray about it (which is good advice) but nobody would ask him what was going on. I believe it was challenging their own faith and they didn’t want to deal with that.
Without compassion and to unpack what someone is trying to say or express, the church is doomed to lose more people that just needed guidance and understanding.
I was an atheist/agnostic before and since my conversion, my partner has come at me with every single one of his issues and we’ve managed to sort them out together, but his heart is still hardened against the church because of how he was treated.

In the last 14 months I was only allowed to attend Church a few times during the Summer (because I refuse to comply with the papers and the tracking they have been requiring). So, although I don't know anything about Calvinism, for this period Paul has been the closest to "my Priest" that I have atm. I hope to be able to attend Church again in the Summer though. That would make me so happy.

The reason why people call you their pastor is because we spend more time with you and your videos than we do with our local church leaders. Most pastors aren't as open as you for whatever reason.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, Jordan has done about all he can... and he has been wounded and scarred by his fight.
I see Jonathan as picking up that banner (or cross?) from Jordan and giving us all hope.

Hi Paul, I see a bunch of people mentioning some reasons for the statistic of 50% of people clicking away after 30 seconds. I have another possible reason to add - I watch RUclips on the mobile app, and I have an auto play feature turned on. When I scroll through the home page of recommended videos, if I stop even for a second, the one at the top of the screen will start playing, and that counts as a view because it shows up in my history. So, I have probably thousands of videos in my history where I've watched 5 or 10 seconds without meaning to. Your videos show up often, and although I often can't watch some of your videos, they get a couple of seconds of playtime from my account. Thanks for this interview! Was great.
The coversation around the history of Quebec gave me the mental image of American Christianity being the last loose, rusty bolt holding the west together.
There's also a few latin American countries still holding to their Christian values but definitely having the same issues.
In Ontario we don't need passports for church yet. Quebec is a little crazier than Ontario.
I am one of these people who attend a non denominational church, listen to an orthodox icon carver and a protestant pastor, and take communion with my grandmother at mass. All of these practices are fragmentation of christ's and should not be labeled "hybrids" but a reuniting of christ. Christ is at the top of my hierarchy not Catholicism, Orthodoxy, protestantism, etc. Christ is much larger than all of these practices thus making it impossible for them to complete the entire picture.
I think the point is you dont know christ as well as these traditions, to be able to stand outside of them and decide which pieces of each that you want to keep.
@@youssefsammouh501 What if a Christian with a like mind set to Bret’s said, “Let’s stack them all up to what the Bible says on each issue that they might have, doctrinal or otherwise, and see if Christ is at the top or not.” What then? Would you dismiss such a person by saying that he or she is just appealing to “sola scriptura?” No one legitimate Christian sect has it all together, and likewise, each one has something of value to offer.
@@TharMan9 i just think if you are going to place yourself above all traditions and pick the bits that you like from each, theres at least a problem there in that you arent really engaging in any of them. Thats even assuming you have the supreme knowledge to judge all these traditions, which you dont
@@youssefsammouh501 I agree, we shouldn’t have the attitude that we are above all the traditions and that we’re just going to pick and choose what we like and throw out what we don’t like. I don’t know if that’s what Bret was trying to say or not, but I was suggesting something different. Sometimes when we compare what a certain tradition says and does to what Jesus and the apostles said and did, it’s relatively easy to see where it falls short. Other times, it’s not so easy. But in either case, there are a lot of wise teachers in each tradition to guide us as well. I’m all for the saying, “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.” (The trouble is, it’s hard for Christians to agree on what the essentials are!)

I hope Paul understands that actually pastoring a small, humble church is his card of authenticity. Everyone wants to be big and famous, being small, faithful, and knowing less is his street cred.

Secularization is only one of the reasons that has made people to leave Christianity, but a very strong reason, if not the strongest, has been, in the case of the Roman Catholic church, the sexual abuse practiced by so many members of the clergy. In Quebec another major factor has been the horrible treatment of the native people by separating children from parents and forcing them to boarding schools (run by roman catholics). So, one could say that the reason of leaving is very often political more than spiritual, although the spiritual mind of the people has been badly hurt too. The Roman Catholic church hasn't been able to show that it is seriously dealing with the problem it has concealed for decades. It is impossible to return to a setting like this and it is just about as impossible to draw new people to a church like this. It took decades to accumulate the mess that the church has in its hands and if it will ever survive, it will take decades to clean the table.

I’m no Roman Catholic but the residential school thing is only half true. It’s true that they weren’t good schools and abuse did occur. That is largely the case of any school especially at the time. It is largely not true that people were forced to go to them by the church. The schools were often requested by the chiefs.
Paul, we ditch the video after 30 seconds because we conpulsively click on it before realizing it's not the right time. Then we come back. Also, have you ever considered that people have to open the video 10 more times after watching it to check the comments section? (Especially if they watched when only Vixen and a couple of randos have passed) Does that go into the analytics? Maybe not, but probably.
And Quebec, it's a strange hybrid place in many respects. It's passionate yet fickle in it's inclinations. I'd say it's fundamentally adolescent. Its cultural heritage is so messy that it's a poster child for the meaning crisis.

That was a great discussion. I don't think that Safety is the religion though. In my opinion, safety is more like the salvation offered by adherence to the religion of science.

The build-your-own-religion works for the study stage, but for true spiritual transformation we must undergo uncomfortable changes brought about by circumstances (described by concepts) which we would rather avoid, and thus we keep working around those aspects of spiritual discovery to our own detriment. Also, having a spiritual teacher, who comes from a fixed tradition or lineage, brings one fully into the body of Christ. We cannot be our own spiritual master.

It's always interesting to me that people assume the anti-christ won't know exactly how to appear like the Christ, even the most treasured, secret, hidden, encoded version we keep in the holy of holies within our hearts-the devil knows what these symbols and words will make us do. How desperately we crave, and yet disbelieve, only to look for the hybrid version in reality, the monster who plays the role of the hero.
