The last 8, minutes are just him going in circles about how much he likes tourism lol
That’s better than the usual late-game descent into madness if he goes beyond, say, 250 turns
Hey, shout out to Potato's editor. I love the new pop-ups and snark.
The 30 Rock reference was a fun surprise. Now, I'll never think of Ruhr Valley the same again.
Agreed! Editor pop ups are fantastic, as are the bearded dragon pop ups. 10/10
@@colby281 RIP Beardie
I love how Potato always plans and plays the long game even when he's, like, two turns away from winning.
Ending with unlocking democracy after rejecting the results of a vote is just perfect!
Your next play through should be the Inca, using the Preserve and work the mountain tiles since they’re all Breathtaking for easy culture and faith, and I really like the Inca
I DIDN'T THINK OF THAT OH MY GOD
huh, clever, and realistically plausible.
Loving the editor's style, McWhiskey. Consider letting him stay. :D
I definitely second that! Really has made me enjoy these videos even more.
Oh he's defiantly staying.

"We're about to get our first Great Writer!" - said after 200, going for a culture victory
Catherine the magnificent + monopolies = tourism stonks
Edit: Also Maui - thanks @Kevin Lyon
With a maui too.
@@kevinlyon875
Maui can help out Germany massively if you get a bad spawn.
tell me why i did this as my last game like 3 days ago. was super fun
I want a culture Victory, by rebellion of all nations, and leveraging that into cities flipping to you and using their luxuries to further leverage and just swamp the map.
You should redo Kupe on his own continent again with the new modes. pulled off a culture win at 176 on Deity. It was nuts
I second this.
And get Maui as his Hero
I did an Ethiopia game on deity last night, won on turn 164. Rock hewn church tiles give you up to 9faith and tourism each. And the monopoly multiplier is super insane.
I feel like monopolies are a bit too strong, tbh... 600% extra tourism from monopolies, while individual modifiers are only like 20% from open borders and so on.
I end up accidentally winning a tourism victory just because I got lucky enough to have a monopoly on two resources.
I feel like each monopoly should give 25-50% tourism bonus based on how complete your monopoly is. Also, spies should have a way in interacting with corporations, perhaps by stealing a copy of the slotable item which reduces the tourism effect that that resource has on your empire.
I think it balances how difficult and finicky tourism victories on deity can be, at least when compared to domination or science.
Obtaining a monopoly requires planning and investment....open borders offers 20% modifier because it's easily achievable.
The reward for completing something more complex should reflect that complexity.
When you're bored then a Potato vid is notified.
*then not than. than is a comparison while then a temporal Clause is.
True af!!!

This mode feels very game breaky at around King/Emperor level. Often when I am trying to win a domination victory, I win culture instead because I’ve taken so much land that I have monopolies and the resulting tourism boost
The “little thin land bridge” is called an “isthmus” :)
I think it would be interesting to see you try and win a score game. Having to fight off culture victories, suppress religious combat, sabotage space races, and suppress armies. I think it would be neat to see the strategy for that. Thoughts?
I agree this would be cool though probably difficult
@@joybreegaming8781 Oh yeah, deffinately difficult. You would essentially have to win every victory at the same time without ever actually crossing the finish line
And killing korea in about 40 turns because they already launched the mars colony.
@@fisherbryce3983 you might be able to take every countries every city but the capital and then just plundering any victory structures continually and having a very successful pantheon but idk if that would work
A score game with Eleanor, all other VCs turned off. How many cities can you flip in 250-350 turns?
Pivoting to a different victory type from domination has always been my favourite, because it's less tedious than micro-managing copious amounts of units in the late game. Oh the churn!
The video rotating when you say spuddies gives me unreasonable amounts of joy
It's A TON OF joy, please.
Same tbh
Just hope Civ can make the "reply map screen" again from the previous games. Where you could watch the entire map unfold. When you conquered/build new cities. I deeply miss that feature. The stats alone is not enough for me.
It seems to me conquering for monopolies is exactly the kind of gameplay the devs wanted to encourage with that game mode.
Using Gustav Eiffel to build the Eiffel Tower, seems legit !
I would like to see a domination game with monopolies that doesn't end in a tourism victory. I couldnt stop it.
Same here, so many accidental cultural victories with new mode.
Honestly the editor is fire. I love the little laughing lizard lmao
I honestly *love* the way this rebalances war with the culture victory. It lowkey makes being an asshole and stealing everyones shit (or the European way as we call it) a really viable culture strategy.
Incredibly powerful tourism speedrun strat I used to get sub 100; Rome + chops p+ reliquaries+ monumentality+chop heroes delte them for rlics+ early galley for exploration to meet as many peple
I want a diplomatic victory game from Potato. Curious how to consistently go for one especially in diety.
For "Laissez-faire", you have to pronounce it "Léssé Fèr"
Thanks!!!!
and every time you say it you have to say "hands off" right after and hold your hands up in the air. (at least that's what my American history class taught so we would remember its meaning lmao)
Baguette ?
Kudos to your editor. The zooming in on tooltips is making it a lot easier to follow whilst watching it on mobile.
Thanks for your content Potato.
Before anyone rants about how OP monopolies are, don't forget that they take a lot of setup and skill to pull off. Grand series again Potato.
Monopolies are mostly OP at lower difficulties, at deity it's so much harder to control enough land plus map generation plays a big part of how easy it is to control the luxuries
Pretty sure he is on diety
@@joybreegaming8781 yeah he is, but he's also really good at the game. Just won my first game on deity and can't imagine how hard it'd be to control the amount of resources he had in this game.
@@WyattCieluch not argueing with that... I can barely win on settler
I'm really loving this series and all the great content you keep creating. Keep up the good work and keep doing what makes you happy.
2:35 I believe the art for the aliens in the Red Death scenario are a reference to Xcom.
It feels a lot more realistic in this way. You don't see many countries conquering one another through domination nowadays. The pivoting seems really interesting.
YES. The final form of the Scout should *definitely* be an XCOM unit, I loved that in V.
Beat my first immortal difficulty last night, turn 294. Thanks 🥔!
Hey potato, you uploading really helps with making me happier again, i've been having rough times with school and friends but your videos and civ 6 make me feel so much better
I love the idea of a land that attracts a ton of people from different countries to see their wonders is full of natives that are really displeased with their living conditions.
[insert generic "haha your country like that" joke]
Hey Potato, I know this was a couple weeks ago, so you probably won't see this, but just ffr, if you switch governments to a government of the same era, you can keep the legacy card. So you could switch from Monarchy and plug in the legacy card and keep your housing. Im almost certain this is true because I did it today. Unless something else was going on that I didn't understand you can switch governments for a turn before getting the next tier so you can get the card.
Alexander: You wimp, you’ll never have a strong empire if you don’t conquest!
Kublai, sitting on a mountain of skulls: Amateur.
This looked super fun. Never been drawn to tourism particularly but I like the sell of "big push then pivot".. good stuff
Idea for next game, I just played a game as Mali, used a pretty insanely powerful combo of a strong early pantheon/religion from Mali (desert folklore), cycling into work ethic for the high production holy sites. Holy sites work good as mali because they give adjaceny to their unique district commercial hub which is also cheaper to build in every city in an early empire, the third district in most of my cities was a harbor, which I used Owls of Minerva to completely dominate faith and gold production through massive numbers of trade routes . Each city got 2 trade routes and every trade route gave me an envoy, and every envoy gives gold... which is then used to make more trade routes... it's a lot of flexibility, I ultimately picked faith victory condition (lower cost units via theocracy + suguba + mosque and holy order) but could have easily done domination, culture, or just buying diplomatic points through my insane money supply or slightly different choices with the religion or where I chose to spend my massive faith and gold
2:37 - again, the Mighty Editor is trying to communicate something, but i'm afraid his goals are beyond our comprehension.
*Insert Zoom Meme Here*
I dotn understand.
1:46 when that flag popped up I just died
Good work from potatoes editor, props to you sir or madam. Him being impressed by a 62 production city in the industrial era seems strange though. Then again I'm a sucker for industrial zones with dams and aqueducts.
Just binged the finished binging the entire series even though ive never watched or played Civ 6 before.
Kublai: This? Oh this is just my continent.
World: An entire continent? At this stage of the game, on this difficulty level, owned entirely by your civilization?
Kublai: (without hesitation) Yes.
World: May I... see it?
Maybe an idea for the next playthrough is just a good old simple game of Civ with nice Empire building and good economy. A break for all the overpowered strats everyone is showing off lately and just nice and casual. I would love to see Gilgamesh for example sometime. A game with lots of different strats would also be an idea, rely on pillaging and war sometimes but also good economy and not kill everyone. Just throwing some ideas out there for some inspirations for you Potato:)
I have also never seen a domination game which relies Lahore and their UU. Would be cool as well. Maybe Shaka x Lahore?
I just discovered your channel (and got super into Civ 6 despite owning it for years; damn how Firaxis puts most of the game in the expansions 😡). I really love your content! Great stuff.
great series for optimizing monopolies and vampire castles, I have been leaving a lot on the table.
11:25
Have you ever circumnavigated the world with a BUILDER for an era bonus before?
Potato McWhiskey has!
Kublai can be even more amazing with Owls of Minerva. The first time i actually tried it i ended up removing all my policy cards by accident by getting 3 economic slots in chiefdom without having 3 economic policy cards to put there. As you can imagine that was like getting suddenly kicked by a donkey, but after some turns it did manage to sort itself out. Once you can get the cards and city states that give bonus to trade routes even a city surrounded by snow becomes viable.
Question: was there a reason you didn’t use battering rams or siege towers with your vampires in first few videos?
Really enjoying the tourism pivot, definitely what I would have done. :)
Vampires don't actually benefit from Battering Rams or Siege Towers. I don't know if this is a bug or if it's intended.
Wasn't there a change, that only anti cavalry benefits from those?
@@jan-lukas
Not that I know of. Battering Rams and Siege Towers give their benefits to both melee units and anti-cavalry units.
It's also worth noting that the Battering Ram and Siege Towers only help with Ancient and Medieval Walls respectively, so on Deity their usefulness tends to run out pretty quickly.
The Vampire just doesn't always act like a melee unit, despite being classified as one.
@@ThePowerofCutleries Oh I didn’t know. Thank you.
Byzantium 3 city challenge. Win religious victory without using religious units, and can only build or control a maximum of 3 cities
finished the whole series, such a fantastic work man, good job. keep going. will go and see more of this
@11:25 I HAVE circumnavigated the globe with an apostle. Not quite a builder, but it still made me laugh.
This entire playthrough is literally how Kublai Khan went about when he finally settled in China. Just sat down and dabbled into the culture and arts.
23:19 You can see Phillip and Frederick competing for Chinguetti around 165 with the spikes and drops.
Idea: Early game tourism win with the Khmer focusing on relics. Pretty sure it's possible if you get several heroes, spawn next to Kandy, and trade with the AI for their relics.
JFC. This dude's winning a tourism victory around turn 225, while I've started next to Yosemite and a vast northern steppe of tundra as Russia, and am still chasing my damn tale over amenities, production and city placement.
3:36 - "I'll go for a Bolshoi". For Russian it's very funny to hear, cuz "Bolshoi" = "Большой in Russian" = "Big". Nice game, Potato, gg)
Speaking of XCOM, I do think it would be cool to add an alien invasion gamemode. Being able to either fight against aliens that use powerful units and spies or choosing to "befriend" them. Maybe even have an ADVENT or XCOM-like project that allows you to benefit from the aliens either by allying or resisting them.
I think you should do a Gilgamesh playthrough with Heroes and Legends mode. Just spam heroes and murder everyone to make up for rejecting domination in this playthrough.
Your editor does an amazing job, make sure they are warm and eat well.
(Blink twice if you are held hostage)
Loving 99,9% of the stuff the editor does, my only gripe is the rotating intro.
I dunno what it is but if I don't look away I get queasy from the rotation.
That's the only thing I'd change!
Absolute an upgrade from the previous videos!
One change on my wishlist would be a way to retain passive government bonuses from prior governments (without having to sacrifice a card slot). Especially the extra trade routes from Merchant republic and the extra housing from Monarchy are awkward to use as you get stuck in that government type unless you opt not to make use of the bonus. I think this would make for a cleaner and more natural transition from one government type to the next, and on top of that your final government bonuses would reflect your governing history throughout the ages, which would be neat and thematically fitting.
I realise that this would be a step back toward the original legacy bonuses, but to me the problem with those was the numbers (not impactful enough) and specific mechanic (forcing you not to change govts to improve the bonus), rather than the general concept of inheriting traits from prior government types.
Yeah, I'm starting to think that the Monopolies mode wasn't playtested a lot for Tourism games. In my current game where I just have a 4/5 (5th one in a city state) monopoly giving me a 160% modifier kinda makes it so it's an automatic win.
Monopolies seems really, really strong for tourism, because I don't think AI knows how to use them to compete.
I hope we can see a viable tall one-city meta soon. Thats what I loved about Civ V, especially Venice which was a really good civ for people who just want cash like me lol
Potato actually found some insight from the total religions founded graph!
I like to play a standard size map with only 6 AI but high sea level, if you go for continents and islands then it makes for some fun land formations to play on, and encourages naval stuff a little more which is nice. Keep up the good work :)
Can you have a game with all the duplicate leaders as allies? So the 2 Elenores working together, the 2 Teddy's working together etc.
So happy to see how to pivot! I’ve never done it before and I appreciate the lesson on how to
I love how all these expansions compliment each other so well
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
[...]
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge knew how to turn a rhyme!

Pillaged tiles have -1 appeal on them, so if you are planning to make national parks or build sea side resorts near them, then either remove them or repair them.
Also lumber mills do not have negative appeal, but you should remove it, if you want to have the bonus yields from the preserve district :)
A fun way to win is doing the Babylon biplane+infantry+bombards/artillery rush. It's incredibly fun and perfectly balanced
“By your actions this day, you ensure our people a glorious tomorrow.”
By going for war early on, Potato made it possible to do a pivot in the middle and won a victory he likes.
Perfect canal spot on that land bridge.
I would like to see a game where you take crusade as saladin, early war, turn into a science of faith victory.
I think there is a reference to X-Com aliens on the building ad in one of the late game buildings in the city center.
I feel like firaxis just gave up on balancing things and decided to create as interesting civilizations to play as possible, honestly I’m a fan
Watching two of your playlists on this game, I am now officially convinced that nothing about it is balanced. And top heavy if you ask me.
I'm not particularly good at this game, usually playing a long game to a science victory. However, since I started playing with the Corporations and Monopolies option, I've been getting culture victories by accident in every game. Note that I almost never got a culture victory before. A couple of times I have literally checked World Rankings to see where everyone was at and noticed that I was only a handful of turns away from a culture victory. Perfectly balanced. ;-)
Potato casually saying I'll put in laissez-faire
Me a vicy 2 player: *LOAN INTENSIFIES*
Also, I personally think monopolies are way op. they definitely need to be nerfed to reduced the tourism percentage they give. I've had games where I won a culture victory from monopolies on Deity when I wasn't even going for it. It takes some of the fun out of it. Because the mechanics of monopolies and industries is really fun to play with, but I don't want to intentionally avoid creating corporations and such.
It's ironic that the tooltip for Culture Victory in the set up screen says it's the hardest victory to achieve, considering it's now quite easy. That said it's my favourite to do.
I think a game with Kublai Khan as China doing perhaps a Diplo victory would be fun - Diplo is one of the least common victories do seeing some strategies for it would be useful and Kublai khan's trade focus seems like it would lend itself to a Diplo game.
The extra talk about the end graphs was great!
Hey Potato, try using the city state picker to guarantee you have Lahore and play as Shaka for early nihang armies. That or pachacuti with preserves and breathtaking workable mountains.
A series with Max amount of Civs on a Pangea map would be cool
I mean, domination usually floods into culture or science victories for a couple reasons. Conquering a ton of cities leads to a lot of options for culture victories, just through what is randomly strewn about: culture naturally from the city, random artifacts, holy sites for rock bands, etc.) And because you're trying to get some science during domination games for military tech superiority, you can always just have enough cities to start dumping into science to finish off the tree fast.
Very rarely do you get so far into a dom game that you CAN'T do one of these two already, just from having such an advantage in city #'s.
But I see what you mean with specifically culture victories, as it IS very diverse. Just a decently logical result from a domination game.
I feel like monopolies make culture games become easy mode. Especially when you own a large portions of the map & have a large military to back it up like Potato here.
If you like tourism, try out Canada. I managed a tourism/diplomacy victory while playing a domination style with Canada. I don't think I even unlocked Radio yet.
Vampire castles surrounded by Canadian Ice Hockey arenas are insanesauce.
The url for this video looks great with all those capital letters together
ARGYLAETL ho
xD Im glad Im not the only one who seems to end up controlling the same city from game to game. For me it's Nan Madol for one reason or another.
1:37
6 Tourism * 6 (600% Modifier)
= 36
36 × 4 other civs is 144 tourism from a single resort.
Love the 30 Rock reference at 3:57
The problem with the monopolies game mode is that you can end up winning a tourism victory on lower difficulties while trying for other victory conditions. I had a culture win on king while trying for the rocket.
The one thing I do not like about the tourism victory is that unlike the other victory conditions, getting more tourism doesn't help your economy, doesn't make your units stronger. Progressing towards a religious victory, each city you convert can get you more loyalty, more gold/culture/science or make it easier to conquer. Progressing towards a dominance victory, you get more cities and more land. But it is at least more interesting than the Space Race, which does even less to help with the economy.
Hey Potato, How About going for a Religion Victory on an *Arctic Donut* Map??
~Inland Sea{Map}, Less Tree, Less Mountains, High Sea Level, More Tundra,
& 2 of the {However many} Civs you go against are Russia & Canada.
....There are obvious ways to make this harder, Obvious Ways to Make it Easier... But That would be up to you!
What if we got a Xcom game mode.
You play as a minor faction with full access and flying transportation.
You spy and locate useful information regarding where other defense groups are and seek and destroy the vampires, and other cults from various regions while trying to build relationships with nations for bonus trade income and bonus rewards.
Nations may go to war, you have no ability to effect these events, you just need to assault and destroy the many cults and try to protect the Human race.
When cults conquer cities (perhaps a local defense force fails) the city becomes infested with zombies and spawns large numbers of weak units that attack nearby nations to capture more cities, unless you (or ai defense groups) attack and cleanse the city (which replaces it with a 1 pop independent) and then you have to protect it against the wandering zombies
OK Tater, how about culture victory, primarily from forests. Using Kupe to make mega forests with groves and his special ability. Other tourism improvements encouraged.
"I don't know how tourism is calculated. Is it based-"
Yes.
