  • Book Review of Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki
Today, I'm reviewing Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki. This book is the memoir of Mineko Iwasaki, the real life geisha that the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" is based on. I talk about how "Geisha, A Life" inspired my novel "Geisha Hands" and how "Geisha, A Life" reveals the truth behind the ugly stereotypes and lies that "Memoirs of a Geisha" perpetuates.

I couldn't get into this book. It's written in a diary sense with no real commentary on herself with an adult perspective. We see the world through 5 year old Masako and how she was a spoiled brat and into the arrogant Mineko.
There is no character arc of her becoming more polite. She is very snobbish throughout the entirety of the book. Telling others to shut up, saying everyone is envious of her, and that she is instantly good at all things like basketball and golf. She was so good that she can learn dances at a fraction of a time, and that others idolize her.
She also lacks empathy towards her older sister Yaeko, who clearly had a point calling her parents baby sellers. Because Mineko and her were literally sold off to Lady Oima.
The book puts you into the mindset that you're going to learn all the dirty secrets of geisha work, and it does suck. It's basically child labor at age 6, it's exploitation just like child beauty pageants. But there is no condemnation of it. She condones it.
The book was dry and hard to get through since most of it is simply her patting herself on the back. So the best mindset is to read this book like you're reading the diary of a narcissist. I'm glad you enjoyed it but I personally found it painful.

So late 😅 but I believe Geisha Of Gion is the UK release title and Geisha: A Life is for the American release.
