On this day in 1970 {April 4th} Dick Clark conducted an interview with actor Lee Marvin on his ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the movie 'Paint Your Wagon' was playing in theaters across the U.S.A., in the film Mr. Marvin performed two songs, "Wandering Star" and "The First Thing You Know"... Lee Marvin received an Golden Globe nomination for 'Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy'... Mr. Marvin passed away at the age of 63 on August 29th, 1987... May he R.I.P.
Lee Marvin was SO great! Great in a comedy and great in drama. A chilling, scary villain. I had to get older before I really appreciated him, but I enjoy watching his old movies so much. What a treasure.
"They civilize what's pretty By puttin' up a city Where nothin' that's pretty can grow! They muddy up the winter And civilize it inter A place too uncivilized even for snow!"
Certainly good for socio-political commentary. But my favorite is "Wandrin' Star" as the song reflects more on the person and not the people. Many of the other songs were about the melancholy of the prospectors of the west in the gold rush era.
Wonderful film !! Wish there were more of them like Oklahoma , Seven brides for Seven brothers , such fantastic actors who could not only act but don't brilliantly. Oh I miss these actors so much !!
The first thing you know is Lee Marvin is a consummate Pro . He can definitely carry a tune. Has he ever recorded an album . He has quite a good gritty basso voice .
You need to have your ears checked. Marvin couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag. That was part of the charm in this "musical" where none of the leads could sing. Jean Seberg had to be dubbed, so it boggles the mind how terrible her singing really was.
this movie was so ahead of its time; i think it will be the biggest classic in twenty years. Amazon only had a few copies, which were going for over $20. IT has become rare. IT is the best musical ever made.

That should be the Conservationists Anthem. Everything mentioned in the song is absolutely accurate. By what we've done to this beautiful World since we evolved, we should be totally ashamed of ourselves.
Exactly. People constantly pick on it forgetting both the fact that neither he or clint eastwood are professional singers (there's no autotune back then) and there's nobody around that could pull off the character. So you make do with what you got.
Listening to this song, I couldn't help but notice how much it reminded me of My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison In both films main characters make commentary about society and how people refuse to be or do their their best. In PYW Ben sings about civilization messing up the world, and in MFL Higgins complains about the lazy way people speak. The cadence of The First Thing you know is quite similar to "Let A Woman in Your Life" . One interesting thing about the movie Paint Your Wagon is that it did a lot better in England than it did in America
In case no one told you already in the past year, Frederick Loewe, who co-wrote "My Fair Lady" with Alan Jay Lerner, did same on "Paint Your Wagon." with Nelson Riddle and Andre Previn.
Tremendamente cierto en esta era... Civilizan la libertad hasta que nadie es libre, civilizan a derecha e izquierda hasta que no queda nada y nada esta bien, exquisito juego de palabras...
In case you guys wanted the English translation: Tremendously true in this era ... Civilize freedom until no one is free, civilize right and left until there is nothing left and nothing is fine, exquisite play on words And I agree 100%.
Genius … take a guy whose career was built on tough habits and vicious reactions, put him in this cast of actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and genius arrives the moment the director touts, "And roll 'em."
I love Lee Marvin. I love Lee Marvin singing. I love Lee Marvin singing with Clinton Eastwood sitting there. But this drags on and on and on. Just end it at the first "foot hills."
You are missing the best lyrics. The most poignant lyrics. And you just want to skip over them?!?! That is what's wrong with this world. Too many civilized people.
I'm not saying that Lee Marvin is the person should be followed by his acts. But for some reasons, when i take sometimes a glass or more, i find his acts kinda interesting...
I love this song! I'm happy to say I'm not civilized!! Especially if civilization means no freedom for choice. I'm an old school country boy. God love america.

Illustrates a point that has relevance today, like it did then. All western films, even and especially this musical, reflect developments in 'modern' life. Civilisation - well how many challenges to the old fashioned order of marriage, military and even restrictions on freedom because of the law have we seen protested against. He mentions California, which after the Second World War became homeland of the hippies, gays, liberals and mind, body, spirit movements. Those things themselves represent an 'escape' from a repressive way of life.
One thing I would add is the issue of gender. Women's lib was another liberal cause. Chivalry, and the respected assumption of betrothal of a man to a woman, and vice versa, go back a much longer way. Men, granted some brutal men, hacked the wilds cooperatively, started them for everyone else to enjoy. Then a new civilised effete order settle those places, and make those men criminals, outcasts and malcontents. Misandry, gynocentrism and competition on the wrong terms then abounds.
+Gail Abbott Yeah, as long as I can keep being free. As long as this country still holds true to The Bill of Rights. Does the lawmakers have faith in their own citizens?

Fantastic! Lee Marvin! What a great actor was he! A great film ahead of it's time!
Loved this Movie, The Gold Mine of 69. 1969. Paint Your Wagon. Great Film, Great Cast. Great Songs, Definately a True Classic!👍👏👏👏❤💕

They're much too 'civilized' for a classic song with humor. Great musical. Great post.

Lee does good on this.
It still seems fitting to this day an age. (yes, I know Lee Marvin can't sing worth a hoot). It's not how he sings, it's what he is singing about.
