When my kids were teenagers, this song was used in a truck commercial. They complained it was a dumb commercial and I said it was from one of the most fabulous musicals ever. I rented it and sure enough, it became a family favorite.
I love this movie because I am a huge Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin fan, more than that though, when I hear this opening song from Paint Your Wagon I get the vision of people storming Sutter's Mill and other locations in Northern California during the 1840's gold rush era, so exciting a time to be alive. I love this movie. Next to Sound of Music, it is one of my favorites. It came out right around the time I was married in 1969, great memories.
Really love this, and many of the songs from the movie! Paint Your Wagon was one of my Dad's favorite movies of all time, he passed away last month sadly. However, I've been really enjoying being able to listen to these songs again anytime and remember the times he and I shared watching this movie as I grew up. Thank you
My son, who is currently 8 years old, loves the movie and the soundtrack. He was with me today in my classroom as I was working on prep stuff for first day next week. He settled down with the film and watched it straight through again for probably the fifth or sixth time since he was 6 I believe! When I was a very naive 15 year old I recommended it to a Mormon friend of mine at the video store. His father looked at me with a strange look and politely declined. I didn't clue in too fast.
Wow...I really forgot that the song was muiltilanguages, for the time it came out it was innovative...because rarely there were musicals translated in multiple languages in 1969
I remember this from seeing it at a cinerama, three projectors covering about 150 degrees of vision, with my parents as a teenager and thinking this was even better than Sound of Music which was also seen at the cinerama. Both were absolutely wonderful experiences. It is a shame that this particular cinematic experience didn't last.
I wish someone would have filmed the original play. That script intrigued me. I did not like the movie changes. I was disappointed when I saw the revision, it was ok, but didn't enthrall me like reading the original script did about 15 years ago... Wish I could re-read to see what I liked so much about it, besides the guy coming out and singing along with his guitar. Didn't help that in last night's show the guys from Tennessee and China did not have accents that were appropriate for their characters.
My dad was a very moral Catholic and refused to watch the movie with its bigamy and all. But he loved the music and there were many 1970s wintery Saturday nights in Ohio where he would take his shower, put on his Aqua Velva, go to the family room, make a fire and put on this album and listen to it. I had all the songs memorized by the time I was 10.

Yeah cleansed what had I was fighting over to one wife yes cuz it clicked me was practiced during his time coming into the old west from the gold rush so he had to make a decision I guess I guess two husbands for one wifel
The show, as produced on Broadway, had some to do with gold and lots to do with racial prejudice. The very pleasant songs are retained but the bulk of the plot is lost. Of course, race relations at the time the film was made would have been a difficult issue.

@@lesleyfields9118 I remember sitting with my dad thirty odd years ago and seeing him laugh out loud. Thinking of having this at his funeral.
My dad's favorite. Miss him.
Memories of my dad, too.♥️

I believe it was written over 30 years previously.
I especially like the Chinese rendition.
"I stake this claim for me and my new partner over there, whatever the hell his name is!"
Except Ben always says "Pardner."
In the last scene, he asked his real name: Silvester Newell. LOL
That's a great name for a Farmer!
I love the old pictures and the tune fits nicely.
"Is he dead?"
"He better be cause I'm gonna bury em"
this kept me awake all night, bouncing about in my head!!!....lol

My school is doing this right now. I saw it and it IS AMAZING!!
You are doing the play or you are studying the Gold Rush?
This is assigned for school? How lucky you are
Great presentation of a favorite song! Thanks!
wonderful song if I feel down I play this really perks me up
The very first time I saw this was the play version. I was about 9. It was with my mom and it was at a community theater in Germantown, Ohio.

film lost a bunch of cash when released so it was sold to tv in the early 1970s and they played the hell out of it back in the 1970s era.

This song is stuck in my head but is really catchy.
The melody was lifted from the first act of Puccini's opera '" Tosca ".
Stage show is totally different.
Es gefällt mir, aber da es uramerikanische Geschichte ist, fühle ich mich nicht berechtigt, das weiter zu kommentieren.
