Did you know that many airlines require their pilots to be beardless?
The primary reason, therefore, is safety. In case of a rapid depressurization, pilots have to put on the quick donning mask. The seal between the mask and the pilot's face could be compromised if he wore a beard. Air could seep out between the beard and the mask!
I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!

This was one of the reasons you can't have a beard in the military, because they thought it would mess up your gas mask seal. It's been debunked though. Alot of times.
Given that i am in the military (Swedish), where beards are allowed, and have tested a mask while having a beard I will agree (though I would still shave if we new the enemy was using gas because I''m not taking any chances).
But! The mask we see in the video is very different from the ones in the military and the pressure difference makes the seal more difficult. When breathing in in a military mask the pressure helps seal the mask, and when breathing out leaks aren't as much of a problem as the air is escaping, pushing away the outside air. The airline masks are pressurized meaning any leak would be catastrophic.
@@AlexanderTheTiny interesting.....I feel like this should be scienced more. I want all my pilots to have giant beards. 🤣 🤣
@@AlexanderTheTiny "The airline masks are pressurized meaning any leak would be catastrophic" - yeah? how so actually?
@@salat Saying it would be catastrophic was a bit of hyperbole, but if there was a leak, the higher pressure inside the mask would push air out, keeping the leak open, unless there were to be some kind of intervention to stop the leak
This practice started in WW 1 where Gas Masks were not that sophisticated and the crude seal lining were unreliable unlike more modern masks being used nowadays with better rubber/latex seals and face conforming plastic body.
One should remember before WW 1, long burly groomed beards and mustache were the fashion.
This practice being extended to Airline Pilot is a byproduct of that practice. One should take into consideration that pilots not only wear the masks because of de-pressurizations but for possible gas leaks, toxic smoke from plane or terrorist attack with poison gas.
Regular short beards are no problem with Modern masks as studies suggest, but what if the Pilot wanted to sport a "ZZ Top" kind of huge beard, should the company put into it’s regulation how long or what style of beard a pilot can grow. Should they have special ruler to measure pilots beard before each flight to see if it’s length go over the threshold. To much a hassle. Might as well make simple and just ban it. Simple. Plus, it makes the Pilots more professional looking to passengers.
FAA says no. You can have a tight seal with 100% O2. Us pilots at Atlas and UPS have beards. Trimmed to 1/4 in.
Yes but EASA (EU) has different laws and he's a German pilot
The same reason that Hitler had his small mustache vs the earlier long one he had at the beginning of the war-prior to the use of gas warfare
Lol I was gonna say that exact thing
Hitler was a small man so big mustache would look ridiculous
I don't think that's true, short moustaches were just in fashion during the interwar period. The comedians Charlie Chaplin and Oliver Hardy both had them in the 20 and 30s.
Hitler was in WW1! He was! There he learned to love killing the funny people of our earth. He himself was not funny at all.
Air canada did checks on this, there is no notable differance to the seal from the quick don o2 mask between a beard and clean shaved. Flying 16 years
I always wondered if Captain Joe and Mentour Pilot got on. Shots fired.
Mentour did mention capt. Joe maybe once heheh
I follow both pilots, one is an airbus guy "Joe" and Mentour is a Boeing guy. It's like a Ford and Chevy dudes.
Wasn't this proven untrue many times? One of the reasons American army and air force want to be allowed to have a beard
I think it depends on the type of mask. The one responsible for respiratory protection at my fire brigade told me that depending how hard your beard is it can push away the seal creating a leak. Next problem is that apperently the sweat helps sealing the mask airtight, but a beard can catch the sweat also preventing a proper seal.
A beard can also interfere with the proper function of the valves. There are som articles from dräger on this, but I dont know if there is an english version.
@@jacob-frye-neu1918 emt here, even with oxygen oriented masks a beard shouldn’t mess with the seal
@@benny5150 They are not oxygen masks though. I mean oxygen masks and SCBAs have a different purpose.
I'd have thought the oxygen flow to be positive- higher (even slightly) than ambient, making the seal far less important.
Oxygen tanks on plane are quite limited. So each amount counts since one doesn’t know how long the Pilot must wear it. I believe Pilots have tanks that last less than an hour or so. While passenger have only 15-20 minutes.
I think I remember an Incident with an Air Egypt plane that crashed because all the Pilots suffered Asphyxia. A flight attendant tried to fly plane after seeing all the pilots down, but, he too later ran out Oxygen from his special emergency tank and succumbed too.
@@inisipisTV en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helios_Airways_Flight_522
The co-pilot simply didn't turn the pressurization system to "auto" and both pilot and co-pilot ignored the altitude alert horn (or didn't understand it- misidentified as take-off config warning).
With most rules in aviation being written in blood, I'd like to know the origin of this one.
@@inisipisTV I thought the oxygen tanks only need to be big enough to allow for an emergency descent below 10,000 ft. After that there’s enough oxygen in the air to breathe without oxygen masks.
The accident you mentioned was a Helios flight.
@@inisipisTV in that accident, if I recall correctly, the problem wasn't oxygen tanks running out, but depresurization being so slow that nobody noticed it and everyone on board passed out. The flight attendant who did wear an oxygen mask and stayed conscious, he held a pilot license but wasn't type certified for that plane and, if I recall correctly, fuel ran out and the plane crashed
But ... but ... I like my beard 🥺
Wow! Thanks for this little know knowledge 😊
I love how that mask hugs your face when you squeeze the red tabs 😎
There goes my nonexistent aviation career then
Or I'll sign for a 14 days on - 14 days off shift job, so when I'm off I'll let the beard grow to be cut just the day before work. yeah, yeah, I'll go for it
Beside they look really handsome with clean shave face and all of them are former military so they used it
Great people hard working, skilled and well educated.
Respect and all blessings to our airlines pilots.
Look like babies😂
Few of them are former miliatary pilots many choose civilian path
@@unitycatalogNo its civilized like ancient Greeks short hair and beardless face
@@stealthtomcat4739 haha like little s*x slaves c.ucks hahahaa not real men
Our airline just went to beard approval.
Hitler trimmed his mustache just for gas mask to be effective. That's why his eccentric distinctive mustache was shortened.
In Germany, pilots are also called Luftfahrzeug-'Führer'...
@user-ey2zr3um8t Sorry, I might delete two
Edit: There we go. I had a bad connection...
Very useful brother
You have informed us Joe thx, We will keep in mind👍
Yes but you can also have a short neatly trimmed beard or a stubble beard
Do a short on the mask! The way it tightens up around the head is piquing my curiosity!
In most applications I know of, a good seal around the mask is primarily required to prevent noxious gasses from seeping in, rather than allowing a bit of the good stuff from seeping out.
The straps need to be quite tight to overcome pressure differentials at altitude though, in the case of cabin depressurization.
I think the straps are pneumatic and get inflated by pressure, so the mask is quickly adjusted tightly to the face
Thanku so much sir 🙏
Many tests were done with people that had massive beards and the beard didn’t get in the way of the mask at all. He was supplied oxygen normally. This is just what airlines made up so their pilots can look more professional. There are pilots that have beards
@ Capt Joe. This is old version. Research in pressure chamber has proved now that beard has no effect on oxygen concentration in blood following rapid depressurization and using quick doning oxygen mask.....Only reason is the general perception of beard as shabby looking and clean shave as smartv and professional
That study only refer to people with a short beard (around 1 inch), but, what if the Pilot wanted to go all ZZ Tops or Father Moses type for his beard. Should the Airline then make a regulation on how long or what style a beard is allowed. Should the FAA make an Official Beard measuring tape to measure each pilots in every flight. Too much hassle.
Plus, That also doesn’t also cover the security against Toxic fumes from fires or Poison Gas attack from terrorist. (You can see the Pilot’s mask has an Automatic Strap-on tightener and a full face/eye cover.) Even if the mask’s oxygen is over-pressured there is still a good chance of poison gas leaking into masks not fully sealed.
So, to make it simple and more secure, just make the rules regarding facial hair as simple as it is.
In some oil and gas sites also required the same where are the toxic gases may present such as H2s, So2.
I have a pilot friend who lost a job because of the beardless rule. She had to start a whole new career. 😂
Was she an anti-waxxer? 😆
🤣🤣🤣
Liar
is that true? what are they doing now?
She?
I think it's
"Welcome,it's your first time seeing a cute villainess "
That's why I'm a simpilot and not a real Pilot ;)
So cool!
Interesting thanks 👍💯
Maybe in western counties but many other countries, where beards are more significant, allow them.
Yes any job where a respirator or a fresh air the person must be clean shaven.
Mentour Pilot: 🗿
Omg this just came up in my news feed
How have you been
Damn I need those tightening straps for my dive mask
That was probably with old masks, new mask this doesn't apply. There is many studies regarding this matter, short/trimmed bear does not affect O2 supply to the pilot.
captain Joe's airline is the one....😂😂
Well that is one question sorted
Thankyou pilot
Oh, damn, now I've just grown a beard and found out that It has Its own advantages. Well, I'll put on a fake one on the day off!
Same with asbestos workers. Can’t get a proper seal on a respirator with a beard
Idk if joes ever gonna see this, but ever since I discovered you on RUclips years ago, I’ve been trying to look into flight school in my area but the cost of it kills me. Nearly every place wants $100k for schooling which I’m willing to pay over time hearing on how the industry needs pilots badly as time goes on but that price tag gives me a big gut punch in the stomach😕 I’ve even built a sim to practice on at home to fly and practice but idk where to go from there aside from obtaining a 1st/2nd class certificate.
27 years with the airlines,Yes clean shaven.
Yeah? Tell that to Atlas.
Middle Eastern and South Asian Pilots: 😳
If I am flying in a rickety seaplane somewhere in back-country Alaska and the pilot does not have a majestic beard, I'd be mighty disappointed.
I thought there was a study that disproved this? I don't have the source to hand, but Im fairly sure the conclusion was that the risk of the seal being compromised was minimal, and had a greater than 1 in a million chance of causing a safety risk.
I was wondering why some do. Do plane spotting and noticed some pilots have been wearing beards.
Is flying not recommended for passengers with beards?
Are passengers in control of the plane? There's a big difference between the pilots' system and the passengers' system. The latter just needs to keep you alive, the former needs to keep you sharp.
It's recommended that female passengers shave their bottom-beards.😒
What causes depressurisation please reply
A study says is not s big deal and you can use a few days beard
Relevant recently…
And most people thought pilots shave as they think being clean shaven makes them look younger and better 😅
Then what about for passengers in that case or situation?
Thanks to requirement.
Oh! I didn't know this! 🤷🤔
The reason Hitler had his iconic beard was so in WW1 he could still put on a gas mask while having a beard. Maybe his mustache would be an option for pilots?
😂
But the lack of air won't seep in because air is under a minimal pressure in those masks. Unlike diving masks where water seeps in- causing a problem. But if my diving mask was compressed to my face like that pilot's, there'd be no issue.
And I thought the no beard rule is because you would understand even less of what they are mumbling into the microphone. 😉
Sometimes I’m baffled how bad the sound quality is from the announcements. Either from the pilots or the flight attendants. Don’t really wanna know how it works during an emergency.
Emergency services such as fire fighters can't have beards due to the same reason with self contained breath apparatus.
Hey Joe, you did a video about it in the past but this time you didn't mention that the beard thing has been debunked through a test. Why did you leave that out?
In scuba diving also need to be beardles but if you are experience doesn’t matter anymore. Even in full face mask.
That is key reason for Hitler's funny moustache too
And smoke intake in the case of internal fire. There is a 100% clean oxygen only option.
The Simon Fraser University made a study regarding this topic.
So passengers preferably should be beardless as well?
Yes. My husband was a pilot and beards were a bother.
Wait does that mean it's also true for passengers and bearded people are at risk of hypoxia?
That's why a very famous but bad German guy didn't have a beard
Catch me if you can
Does your airline has this requirement ?
A beard is to save your body from impacts, that's probably more important
Clean shave always looks better anyway.
Nope
Nope
TRADUCIR AL ESPAÑOL POR FAVOR. GRACIAS
I just don’t agree with the thought pattern. In the military they can’t have beards because of possible chemical weapons coming through from the outside. The oxygen in the air is the same.
So... the bearded ladies can't be pilots. Good to know. Thanks Captain.
😂
😂
Captain? He is wearing first officer stripes. He needs one more gold stripe.
Racism is out of control. 😂
Same as firefighters 👍
I thought you can't have beard because they'll think you'll be that pilot who landed on a twin airport 👀 ✈️ 🏢🏢
So passengers should be shaved as well?
Same as firefighters....
Gillette,FAA approved!
Ahhh yes, why you shouldn’t wear a beard
Stubble?
I guess I will be beardless
I fly on Allegiant Airlines as a passenger and am seeing many of their pilots flying wearing full beards and mustaches. And as a retired airline captain, I have had your conversation with them. I tell them 2 things, their oxygen mask won’t work as advertised as it will not seal to their faces and that if they have applied an oil based product, their beard will catch fire. This was common knowledge to all airline pilots in my day but the new generation who took my place don’t know this and their company lets them do it. Well done on your part for bringing this to the flying public’s attention.
This has been debunked numerous times by numerous sources. It's not true. So what y'all THINK y'all know . Y'all really don't.
Actually this isn’t correct. Not enough oxygenated air would escape to compromise a pilot from a less than perfect seal. It’s to prevent toxic gases from seeping in in the event of smoke in the cockpit. Meanwhile many airlines, including some U.S. carriers have oxygen masks that allow their pilots to have full beards. So now you know.
Beardless requires more maintenance. I’d love to grow my beard, but it’s not currently fashionable.
Mell fighters wear o2 masks all the time and many have beards.
What about hair?
That's not a mask, that's a face hugger!
Oh wow, the more you know
Beard Ban!!! Heck no! I will never! 😊 beard🧔🏻♂️
Good to know than i remove my barth bevor. I am a passenger.
The same reason as you never see firefighters with beards…
Ours have beards
Lol oh yeah, that makes sense
Captain Mentour Pilot has a beard.
So i m serious . Je suis patricia. I need to find an old friend of us air force joe campos born in october 1965. Lived in texas , florida, north carolina...
That makes sense. During the eighties I was in the army, and because of the gas mask, so all military men must shave. This is a fact.
Oh crap. I'm a manly man with a wizard beard. Guess I'm not flying a plane any time soon
Did that mask tighten like a face-hugger? Creepy.
Wear??
What about a pilot wearing glasses? They will create a gap aswell.
Just realised he's a F/O
