Just pulled the trigger and bought one after almost 4 years of reflection. Man can't wait to get it. I think this is one of the most beautiful knife design ever made with the SRK I just love the utilitarian look of them.... I guess this is why I find a glock a beautiful firearms.
You gotta be a fool not to like this knife and the steel is really the best for the buck some folks just need to complain about something and if it was not the handle material it would be the guard shape or blade lenth. The Cold Steel Trailmaster is a legendary knife for a reason and best seller as well with the Recon Scout knife.
Tac, a great review - you stuck to your process and honesty in the face of a popular and awesome looking knife. You didn't get caught up in the knife. Rather, you did another systematic, honest, and helpful review. YOU DA MAN. :)
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada !! Love to have 1 some day, but up here the cost of shipping & handling & there SUCH a price mark up in Canada Unfortunately. Nice review Keep em coming Sir. 👍👌
+ohjust1moreknife A bit heavy and long of a blade which may sacrifice some speed and maneuverability. But surely would impale effectively even through canvas material or thick clothing.
+inquisitor Though I can't argue with the benefits of a smaller blade there's no doubt that the TM is a fighter. Cold Steel's Laredo and Natchez are pure fighting knives by design and they are heavier and larger than the TM. I'm not talking self defense where concealability factors like size and weight come into play but just a pure fighting blade.
That's one of those knives that I always wanted and never bought. Waaaay back in the day when I went to the Tracker School one of the instructors had one and I thought it was the coolest blade ever.
The only downside I ever noticed with the CS Trailmaster is the handle as tyou pointed out Tac. The worst part is the Kraton deteriorates over time and will begin to get really gummy and pull away from the handle. That takes years but will eventually require a re-handle. MAYBE you could just do a re-handle now and get some contoured micarta on it?? I am not sure if you can do it yourself or know someone, but that is what I am facing with a couple of mine right now.
if your open to constructive criticism, I notice on your ten chop tests the chips you initially chop at the first 2-3 swing seem to stop the blades from biting into the unchopped wood. that might be the cause of not being able to bite in the later swings. just something I noticed
I had the original Cold Steel Trailmaster, until it was stolen (while I was pulling someone out of an apartment fire - no good deed goes unpunished). I miss that knife, but I really cannot afford to replace it (original was a gift). I am jealous now you have two!
Have a 1st gen TM I bought as a second for $99.00. Edge bevel is off a bit. Right away I had the Handle, guard replaced. Sports a nice nickle guard. oosick handle with a nickle butt end. Not sure I would treat it like you do, unless I had to. Great video.
Nice video TAC, hey have you thought if trying the Becker Bk21 Rhienheart Kukri? I just got it, be doing my own review soon enough, but I've never really cared for kukris much but I'm really liking this one. I'd be interested in your opinion of it and it's a BIG mamba jamba so I figured it would be in your interests.
nice knife, the handle is for a fighting knife so when blood gets on it you won't slip, mud, water ext. blood blood blood, makes the green grass grow... Good vid.
Don't break on me now...he say's on a slab of O1 over 1/4 inch thick, lol. Just looking at this old vid, cuz I just found this beast for sale on Amazon for 113.99, and couldn't pass it up at that price. Whenever I decide to buy a big assed knife I look to see if my old favorite reviewer of beastly blades...Tac..has a review of it. That's assuming it is an older model, made before you stopped doing reviews. DAMMIT MAN, I miss ya Tac!!!!!
Perfect video, dude! Thanks a lot!! Trailmaster is something irreplaceable, but still, I prefer the older Japan version, especially because of better material of handle - softer kraton, not "kray-ex", like is applied on the newer version made in Taiwan.
that is some hunk of steel. how was the clip point? I have several, (Buck 110) but was wondering if a drop point would be stronger tip out in the field.
Comments off for the tops Armageddon video, but I just wanted to say I love your vids, freakin hilarious, glad you still tip tested the tops, but I wouldnt have held it against you if you hadnt. The design is amazing but I think you have to keep expectations for individual steels, 1095 is soft already and im sure they tempered way back for machete use, it didnt hardly bend though either so your still good with it, smack it back, lol. Thats why I am making d2 and v4x etc for knives because a bent or snapped tip is the MOST annoying thing. People will call d2 brittle, yeah, thats the heat treats decision, lower temp treat and it is anything but brittle, that's a rumor from people testing factory treated knives that are way harder then necessary. Keep up the awesome shit Tac!
The handle Demi dis me of the "coffin" handled Bowles from the 1800's . The handle really hurts your hand that much ? Sorry I forgot to bring my diaper bag with me today 🤒. Kidding Tac. I wonder if that handle "wears" down a bit over time. Glad it's O1 steel big fan of it , don't like the cro-van 1095 . As always an honest review and opinions from you ... All the best to you Tac !
Probably my all-time favorite woods knife and I've used a bunch of them. I've heard the tang is weak (like the Kabar) but I've never witnessed a failure. I know you've never liked it as much as I have, but that's cool. Can't agree on everything. The would would be a super boring place if we always agreed. Peace out, backwoods brother-man.
Yeah, that "Swedge" is supposed to be sharp on bowie knives, Tac. It's so you can do a quick back cut with it if you have to use the knife for defense. Kind of like your kbar knives. The one I want is the 1917 Frontier Bowie.
I’ve had one for 20 years now and it’s my favorite knife. It would be had to find a better knife. That knife won’t break! Have you ever seen those modified? Some people remove the handle and put on a nice wood one. I don’t have a problem with the handle but sure do like some of the knives I’ve seen redone.
as an owner of a kabar potbelly I was wondering how kabar handled that situation with it breaking. did they send you a new one or anything? cuz if their warranty didn't cover shit like that then mine is getting put up and not being used.
almost got one of these but saw to many vids of them breaking....got me a sog seal team elite awesome blade saw your review on that and I love it except for the spine rasps so I'm bout to get another one but with the gray powder coat and no spine rasps awww yeaaaaa
I just realized this about your trail master and mine. I thought they were sk5, but they are both actually 01 tool steel....hence the taiwan 01 marking on the blade.
hell yeah tac! i know you don't do requests, but in the future it would be awesome if you could do the husqvarna 26" forrest axe vs. the GB scandinavian axe, cause i hear there similar but i got my husqvarna for like $62. and i know you like your GB, Anyway rock on tactical!
It would be interesting to compare this to a resharpened Mtech 151. The Mtech is a clone of the older model Trailmasters, which had a thinner spine, lighter weight, and were slimmer a few millimeters behind the edge. Cold Steel seemed to have responded to the BK-9 by beefing up the knife, which might actually hurt the performance for most uses.
Really, that's odd. The two knives are similar enough that there shouldn't be gigantic differences beyond personal taste and differing environments. I prefer the BK-9 because the leaner grind allows deeper cuts for the same force, as well as better performance in food processing. Neither tool is great for butchering, but the Trailmaster was extremely clumsy for processing game, whereas the BK-9 carved nicely, but was just longer than ideal. Also, the lack of a guard allows for more holds.
Escariot Nah no the mtech is really thin I mean have you checked the chop off of? the mtech got beaten by a DAGGER plus the trailmaster has a flat grind so it has the keener edge and how is it clumsy? it's one of the best balanced knife I know
jordan nazif I don't think that thinness was the problem. Mtech's quality control is way below Cold Steel and Becker qc, so the demonstration probably reflects a too thick grind. The Mtech is also a flat grind. I have the Mtech and the older model Trailmaster, both of which have the same balance points. The major differences were the Trailmaster's superior handle epoxy, and the edge sharpness upon arrival. I ended up reprofiling both to improve chopping performance, and they perform very similarly, although the Mtech needs to be resharpened three to four times for every Trailmaster sharpening. I recommend that you buy and compare the Mtech to your Trailmaster. It's inexpensive, and a fun way to experiment with different grinds without ruining an expensive knife.
Tac, it looked like there was a large not where you were chopping (I could be wrong). Try moving over a little and try again. I have a Trailmaster and it chops like crazy.
+Keep Out So since you live on property IDENTICAL to Tac you know there wasn't a knot. If you look at the color of the wood compared to the cut next to it you can see the grain was different. But I don't live in a place IDENTICAL to Tac. LOL
good review...exact reason why i bought a trailmaster carbon V with a custom handle...when the kraton gets water in it, its bye bye tang...love the TM...but thats the downside alright
aww hell yeah man, I just snapped mine sadly. cold steel are gonna do something bout it though. love your vids mate. and I agree bk9 sharper out the box
hey tac i been into knives all my life but here recently ive been getting into more quality blades and all different kinds and i hear bout different grinds and blade shapes do u think you could do a vid explaining the diff between diff grind angles and blade shapes like what makes clip or drop point and how do u tell convex or full flat or scandi grinds and all that gud stuff so when im talking bout knives i know what the hell im talkin about lol aww yeah!!
I think the vibration in the handle is cause by the squareness of the tang and handle I would like to see a more fitted grip handle on that monster of a knife kindda think of the crkt chanceinhell handle or the crkt fe9 with cold steel's kraton rubber like grip over those types of shape of a handle and it would be an ultimate heavy duty bowie knife and would be great if they kept it at it's normal price tag
I had the recon scout same knife just shorter gave to my brother cuz he didn't have a knife at the time and he really likes it.knowing how good the r.s.is I thought the t.m. Would be much better.
Good review. I never got this classic knife because of the handle shape. I suspect the handle material will get gummy over time. but could maybe hit it with some very fine sandpaper to bring the abrasiveness down a bit. But that is one thick. solid chunk of blade. I am a fan of the Kershaw Camp series and the BK9 in their abilities. Please include them in your chop-off.
its a combat knife handle is designed for no twist, and easy to switch grips. Not designed for cutting trees down,no knife is. This so called scenario where a good knife can save your life [in the real world] how many people has that happened too? this and the recon scout are for soldiers too scrap with, and to use as a cutting tool. in all my career i never used my knife to light a fire, or baton logs, fire means target! it is a good soldiers tool as the recon scout is. And in ww2 many men had bowies they have been around for hundreds of years, even before j bowie. it is a very good design
Its nice to hear no nonsense talking on these channels. Nice job guy.
Love the Trailmaster. Love the Laredo Bowie too. I wish Cold Steel would do a full handle tang, slab sided grip version.
Just pulled the trigger and bought one after almost 4 years of reflection. Man can't wait to get it. I think this is one of the most beautiful knife design ever made with the SRK I just love the utilitarian look of them.... I guess this is why I find a glock a beautiful firearms.
I love the Trailmaster and the recon scout in O1...O1 is my fave knife steel and Cold Steel does a great job with it.
You gotta be a fool not to like this knife and the steel is really the best for the buck some folks just need to complain about something and if it was not the handle material it would be the guard shape or blade lenth. The Cold Steel Trailmaster is a legendary knife for a reason and best seller as well with the Recon Scout knife.
dude, your silent openings always have me reaching for the volume control on my phone! love all the vids lately.
Bonjour, après le fallkniven modern Bowie j'ai fait l acquisition de ce superbe couteau . bravo pour le test. 🐻
Tac, a great review - you stuck to your process and honesty in the face of a popular and awesome looking knife. You didn't get caught up in the knife. Rather, you did another systematic, honest, and helpful review. YOU DA MAN. :)
Six videos in one day? Tac's on fire!
+Josh O tactical un fuego, playa!
.....where are the other four?! I do not see them!
I think he's talking about the six vids he says he filmed in one day
+Josh O patronising you are
every single vid i watch just makes me smile so much. keep em coming big man.
The best part of the whole review was the intro when you attacked that tree with two machetes.
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada !!
Love to have 1 some day, but up here the cost of shipping & handling & there SUCH a price mark up in Canada
Unfortunately.
Nice review
Keep em coming Sir.
👍👌
That is one of Lyns best desigens. Its like a Cleaver & indestructable.
"Shut the hell up! My show!"
Love this shit. So glad I found this channel. Haven't binged a good channel in a long time. Great stuff.
best produkt dialog ever no stupid storys..shows exactly what somone need to know before buying or to bought THANKS Much
Been looking for a tough outdoor knife and this is perfect.
I love my carbon v trail master. Awesome!
Everything about this knife screams fighter! The handle shape, the false edge, the guard, the grip.
I've been waiting for this test soooo long, great to see it! Awesome vid! High 5 bro!

Tac get the sunglasses on this blade is bright! Cool it powered threw that not log! How is the scales is it a hard shock on the hand?
"Shut the hell up, my show" hahahaha
t-shirt worthy

My SK5 with the old leather sheath is a total beast.
Love my trailmaster and it’s probably my go to woods blade, just dont like the handle and i plan to get it rehandled soon
I had the original Cold Steel Trailmaster, until it was stolen (while I was pulling someone out of an apartment fire - no good deed goes unpunished). I miss that knife, but I really cannot afford to replace it (original was a gift). I am jealous now you have two!
+Roy Fernbach You should get the poor man's trailmaster from Mtech. Almost identical, performs great and is very cheap.
Cool Video 👍
Thank U for the Info and the field Test 👍
Your videos make me happy :)
+Keith Carson awesome!
That Duel handed chopping clip 00:14 always cracks me up. Could you imagine a big dude in a ski mask comming at you like that?? Id shit my self lmao
Dammnnnn, Tac, going ham with the tests, brother.
Proper review Brother Tacters! Appreciate honesty! I’m looking for best chopper, I’ll scour your reviews.
Hi Tac just acquired 2 ov these awesome knives, another great vid cheers m8
I have an old carbon V trailmaster... never hit the woods without it.
Nice video TAC, hey have you thought if trying the Becker Bk21 Rhienheart Kukri? Now that's a knife! (said Paul Hogan Aussie style) That thing is a hatchet/axe & a knife all in one.
Awesome knife
nice knife, the handle is for a fighting knife so when blood gets on it you won't slip, mud, water ext. blood blood blood, makes the green grass grow... Good vid.

looks very much like the 80's USA made Gerber "Excalibur". I have one I bought in the mid eighty's for 99 dollars which was expensive back then.:)
Nice beast of a knife and good vid...
I have a Recon Scout in SK5 and want to get a Trailmaster...Great vid Tac!
The handle Demi dis me of the "coffin" handled Bowles from the 1800's . The handle really hurts your hand that much ? Sorry I forgot to bring my diaper bag with me today 🤒. Kidding Tac. nice review of a sweet piece of steel thanks for the video

Escariot Nah how the hell did it hurt it's performance IMO it's leaps and bounds better than the bk9
Really, that's odd. The two knives are similar enough that there shouldn't be gigantic differences beyond personal taste and differing environments. Escariot Nah it is though. the mtech is lighter and thinner
Always makes me laugh 😂👍
What the actual.......... look at that monster of a blade thickness. And I thought the BK2 was thick! I'm considering to buy the SK5 variant.
Tac, it looked like there was a large not where you were chopping (I could be wrong). Try moving over a little and try again. I have a Trailmaster and it chops like crazy.
he wasnt close enpugh for it to affect the performance i live in a place IDENTICAL to tacs so i know what to expect
+Keep Out So since you live on property IDENTICAL to Tac you know there wasn't a knot. If you look at the color of the wood compared to the cut next to it you can see the grain was different. But I don't live in a place IDENTICAL to Tac. LOL
Theres a knot there im just saying hes not close enough for it to affect the blade im just speaking from my own experience
good review...exact reason why i bought a trailmaster carbon V with a custom handle...when the kraton gets water in it, its bye bye tang...love the TM...but thats the downside alright
damnnnnnnn so many vids tac keep um commmminnn brotha!!
Grat Knife!
I can't wait for u to get our baby
+Peter Kohler me to!!
do you have a small ranger band maybe two layers to put some comfort on the handle
This is one off my favorite large fixed blade knife. Mine is the old Carbon V steel.
If you want a fair test vs the bk9, put also a ranger band on the Trailmaster
aww hell yeah man, I just snapped mine sadly. cold steel are gonna do something bout it though. love your vids mate. and I agree bk9 sharper out the box
+AUS BUSHMAN How did you snap yours? And which version was it? SK5 or O1? Just out of curiosity
Galgenvogel it was the 01 version. It snapped at the tip when I was chopping some Australian River red gum
you need to do tests on the srk and a1 replica knives from armory replicas they are cheap but some tough steel and worth the money
hey tac i been into knives all my life but here recently ive been getting into more quality blades and all different kinds and i hear bout different grinds and blade shapes do u think you could do a vid explaining the diff between diff grind angles and blade shapes like what makes clip or drop point and how do u tell convex or full flat or scandi grinds and all that gud stuff so when im talking bout knives i know what the hell im talkin about lol aww yeah!!
Man your intro game is on point Tac I'm loving it. Thanks for these reviews. keep em coming. Also What flag is that in the BG?
Hey two vids in two days, that's fuckin great! Haha Nice vid Tac +Tactical
To me the trail master is an modern take on combat bowie, and thats why i had to have it.
Good shit man!! You should review the Kabar Parangatang.
I had the recon scout same knife just shorter gave to my brother cuz he didn't have a knife at the time and he really likes it.knowing how good the r.s.is I thought the t.m. Would be much better.
maybe do the same thing you did with your BK9, use a ranger band
anyways, great review playboy
The edge rolled on mine on the first baton attempt. Now it just sits on my shelf
Awesome Tac!
Oh man you remind me of deadpool in the marvel comics! Hahaha!
Iamthedudeman00 I was thinking this guy would be perfect for a dead pool movie. Some weapons specialist. Someone put this got in a movie please
f22shift yeah man totally agree, he's a funny guy too! And his voice is perfect for someone like the joker or deadpool!
Been meaning to pick one of these up for like 5 years lol. The price just ain't right for me though.
Yea, nice knife, price isn't nice though.
great video...ya probably just tender from all the other knives that day....
Will you be testing the limited edition Ka-Bar BK20?
Only ting I don't like about the knife is the bronze guard. The top should be flat so when you batton you hit the guard.
Wish I waited and got the 01 tool steel instead of sk-5 what can ya do
have you seen the Rambo anniversary large bowie knife ! I would love to see you test it!
I think a rubber mallet would be a fucking awesome baton
Good review. I never got this classic knife because of the handle shape. I suspect the handle material will get gummy over time. but could maybe hit it with some very fine sandpaper to bring the abrasiveness down a bit.
But that is one thick. solid chunk of blade.
I am a fan of the Kershaw Camp series and the BK9 in their abilities. Please include them in your chop-off.
Great test and review, it sucks that the handle hurts man, but great knife
+SOUTHERN CROSS SURVIVAL "You should be wearing gloves Tactical! *derp*" XD
+Marcus Ott aaaaaaaaahhhhhh your so caring, and stop patronising man it sounds gay
I had a handle like that on something and I just kissed it with some180, or so sandpaper for about a minute and made a huge difference.
Tac you should make a redo of the mt-151 from mtech but put your edge in it, you'll be surprised how comparable to the trailmaster is
its a combat knife handle is designed for no twist, and easy to switch grips. And in ww2 many men had bowies they have been around for hundreds of years, even before j bowie. it is a very good design
john Mutton wouldn't you want something maybe with less of a shiny blade so its less reflective?
I'm pretty sure jim bowie and the guy back used their knives as a striker in a fire or two and probably to baton wood as well
I use my bk7 as a chisel
I have the original release in Carbon V, but of course, I'm 72 now!!!
hey tac you ever test a buck 650 nighthawk?
Great Video thank you tac
You should baton the handle when it gets too angled
