- Based on the international bestseller by Robert Harris. It is Autumn 1938 and Europe stands on the brink of war. Adolf Hitler is preparing to invade Czechoslovakia and Neville Chamberlain's government desperately seeks a peaceful solution. With the pressure building, Hugh Legat, British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, German diplomat, travel to Munich for the emergency Conference. As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the centre of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger. With the whole world watching, can war be averted and, if so, at what cost?

I am happy they cast german actors to play the german characters. Also, the German spoken by George Mackey is clear and understandable. I think I will tune in.

I saw this movie today. It was brilliant. Tense and thrilling, just as any historical spy drama should be. A really good piece of film. Don’t miss seeing it in the cinema

I agree, I thought he stole all the big scenes in the movie and had that cool calm demeanour but inside you knew he was really scared (especially in the dinner scene)

I've always liked George Mackay's acting since 11 22 63. He has a really great future in acting. He does great in historical fiction/nonfiction!

@@magesalmanac6424 The movie is based on a novel which plays around with some historical facts and adds lots of made up elements. Chamberlain was naive and unexperienced, in this movie he is painted almost as a hero.
If only Bruno Ganz was still alive today. RIP Legend

If Britain and France and Italy had not signed the Munich Agreement with Germany, so many people would never have died during the Second World War. Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia also gave them the Pilsen armaments factory, and by September 1939 they had armed the entire army with its weapons. Those who signed the agreement rejoiced that there would be no war. In fact, they only delayed it at the cost of much greater human losses.

The Treaty of Versailles was more or less the reason for WW2. They punished Germany way to hard. Many people even say the plan was to destroy the country completely through the treaty of versailles. Taking away Germany’s military (from 4 mio to only 100 thousand) was a big humiliation for them. The country had one of the most advanced military and it was definitely one of the biggest prides of the nation. Another problem was that in the territories that got taken away from them there lived many ethnic Germans who didn’t want to belong to the neighboring countries. They also could’ve never payed the allies with the money they demanded from Germany. The country itself was in a huge economic crises. It was only a matter of time before another war would break out. (And don’t forget that they lost all their colonies in Africa and Asia)
It was also not fair that Germany had to accept all the war guilt for a war they didn’t even start in the first place which made the people even more bitter.

@@linajurgensen4698 Part of the reason for the boundaries being redrawn after WW1 was to give France a defensive Eastern Border and Czechoslovakia a defensive Western border. And to create a nation for Poland. The WW1 war debt also crippled France as well. The global depression just pushed Germany, which was recovering by then, over the edge. Ripe for an authoritarian to become popular. Had A.H. not been a crazy person it might have worked out for Germany to annex Austria and the bordering lands. As for the colonies, France and the UK lost most of theirs as well post WW2. And one can argue that none of the "great powers" should have any colonies at all.
It's incredible how similar times are in the late 1930s to the early 2020s. Startling.

i love how we all know the story, but it's so enthralling and gripping.. and (i at least) desperately hope for a different outcome, but knowing full well what's to come..
This was a rose-painted version of history. Trying to make Chamberlain look less useless and incompetent.

I used to think that there is too much coverage about WW II. Now I believe there’s not enough. How things have changed. Or rather, remained the same.
You're clearly young - or no little about film history. There have been a stupendous amount of films about World War II for decades now.
I still remember when I watched 1917 and prepare Dean-Charles to be the Protagonist, but turns out the movie give the Candle to George Mackay and Make the movie to be one of the most movies I never Forget

Based on what they've shown in the trailer, I've a bad feeling that Czechoslovakia will be treated exactly as in the actual Munich agreement, i.e. left behind the doors.

This film has a quality from the filming point of view but what it says about the Munich agreement is unbelievable. People from England etc who don't know this event could actually think it was a good thing to happen after seeing this film.

This is not what was taught in English schools. We were taught that Neville Chamberlain was gullible, but that he had good intentions. We were taught that the agreement was not worth the paper it was printed on. Of course we know all this with the benefit of hindsight.

This is based on the novel Munich by Robert Harris. That was a really good book and this movie adaptation looks very promising.
Watched 1917 and since then I've been always waiting for his next performance. Here it comes and it looks phenomenal.

As a Czech with family members who had to deal with consequencies of Chamberlain's "diplomatic strategies" not a great movie which makes him almost a hero.

There’s an ironic line when Neville Chamberlain tells George Mackay’s character he was “too young to serve in the Great War (WWI)”. I thought to myself that he served pretty admirably in 1917.

Maybe if I would be from another country, then I would say “great movie” but as a Czech man I was in the end just sad, because of calling betrayal in Munich as a “great tactic”…such a spit in the face.

@@spm36 Not fair buddy… in March 1939 it was already clear, that we are alone and because of Munich without our borders-system in Sudetenland :/ but in 1938 together with France and GB…there was a chance I think. But of course, today is everyone a general.

@@spm36 first of all Czechoslovakia had system of defensive bunkers located at the borders. The army had to leave bunkers right after Munich It was part of the Munich deal because Sudeten were left to Dritten Reich while bunkers were mostly there. After that the country was basically powerless against any agression. Second of all you should learn history if you want to argue about It.

Once again, Jeremy Irons played a great Chamberlain. (I admire him too, as an actor, but a very interesting man, whom I had the pleasure to meeting at a special event in Toronto, in 2007). Loved this movie....I might just watch it again!
It never ceases to amaze me how many movies are made about the WW2 and how few of those are about the Red Army
Especially since the Red Army had most of the causalities in WW2. (Even if millions were self inflected by the officers shooting the deserters.)
USSR has made its own share of movies check them out they are actually very good. But as the west we shouldn't and couldn't make movies that will glorify the Russian army since they are rivals.

@@petetube99 I agree, it's difficult to get real numbers of the number of deserters shot at Stalingrad. As for the excess deaths under Stalin, the archives are a bit more clear and it appears to have been in the millions, (low, as in more than 1M and less than 10M)
It's really too bad as the communist form of government has never really had a chance to show it could work except under corrupt leaders.
