Hello! I have been casually climbing for about a year now, and because I only have access to a wall once a week I tend to watch a lot of climbing on youtube. I am so glad I found your channel, there aren't enough women represented in the climbing world! We all know they exist but its great to actually discover one! Glad to have subscribed :)
Hahaha wow, I'm amazed you knew that conversion off the top of your head. My bad! But to be fair, I'm pretty sure I shrink during the day (so maybe I'm 5'8.5 when i wake up, heehee)
French guys says : pretty decent pronounciation for Fontainebleau I would say a lot better than average non french speaking rock climbling youtuber. :)
Hi! I’ve been wondering for a long time how to pronounce Fontainebleau. I have French at school so I kinda know how to pronounce French words but here in the Netherlands some people say it like Jenn (Fontainbleau) but some people pronounce the e so fontain*e*bleau. So bc you were French I was wondering if you could tell me which one is right?
I just recently found your channel and I'm so glad! You're the only female climbing RUclipsr I've found so far and you're so much more relatable than the other climbing RUclips channels I've watched so far. I also really appreciate your editing and your music choices ❤️ also your doodles are so cute??? But anyway thanks so much for your content 😊 you're a lovely person and I'm excited to see more of your videos
ahh what a sweet comment!! so glad that you like my editing, it makes it worth all the time that goes into making videos :-) ooh there aren't many female climbing channels out there currently, but i highly recommend checking out the bouldering dabrats! they've got some sweet energy :-) thanks so much for your words of encouragement! :D
I used the excuse of being short (5'2'') way too often so my friends started shouting at me "just jump!" and yeah, most of the times it really works! :D
Never be intimidated at the gym and feel free to ask more experienced for beta. Everyone gets stoked to see someone send a problem they were struggling on no matter what the grade. I really dig just seeing the joy on new climber faces when they conquer problems they believed that were out of their range.
Blake Martin SO TRUE!! when i started climbing, my climbing partner was so much better than me and was always coaxing me onto harder problems. even though i didn’t make it up all of them, it helped me progress a lot faster and made it so much more fun!!
Per the question at 9:53 , I personally a great answer to this is simply exposure , the more you put yourself in that environment especially failing (aka falling down) and walking away will help you get past it. Confidence goes up and down based on your success rate (in the case of falling, not getting hurt vs getting hurt) , the more you go for it and end up walking away from the fall the more likely you are to take the risk.
Don't be afraid to climb if you're first starting out. Everyone started at some point and from my experience everyone is very supportive. I am Climbing between V4 and V5 and I've been around dudes climbing V9 and they were cheering me on. I'm sure there are bad people But I haven't experienced it in my year and a half of climbing. Just get in there, almost everyone is very friendly in the climbing community.
on the starting out thing. Don't be intimidated by the more experienced climbers doing crazy stuff with ease. They know what you're going through as they've been there and needed to just persevere to get better. In fact one of the best ways to learn is to watch other people climb similar routes to yours and just experiment. Good Q and A Jen. The editing's getting far more confident.

I'm a new climber and I have been plagued with "Climber's Elbow" in both arms (even though I climb 3x a week every other day) ... I was wondering if this happened to you when you started out and, if so, how did you work through this?
i've actually never had climber's or tennis elbow, but i know two of my friends that have. i think you should look up ways to tape up your elbow, as well as doing some of those flexion exercises they recommend for tennis elbow. also, it might seem like 3x a week isn't enough to get you injured, but there are some climbing workouts that actually require around 72 hours to recover from. so if you feel like your sessions are powerful or you're exerting yourself a bunch, it's totally okay to go two or more days in between sessions. hope this helps! i can ask my friends and see what they've done to heal their elbows as well
@@JenniferLangen I did recently purchase a Flexbar to do those exercises but from what I've seen online it takes a while to see/feelthe results. I also hadn't really considered needing more time (72 hours vs 24-48 hours) to rest as you suggested. I have been a runner my whole life so I think I have taken for granted how conditioned my legs are compared to my arms. Thank you for the tips!
Hi Jen! I’m a boy, but I have been climbing in the Prana Meme pants for about 5 years now and they are FANTASTIC. Incredibly comfy, stretchy, and very durable. I’ve been through hell and back in my first pair and they still hold up very well. They are a bit pricey, but def worth the investment. Cheers!
damn I didnt know we have a q&a! I wanted to ask which channels do u follow (boulderwise)? except DabRats which I saw you commenting on here and there :) oh oh and the crashpad is legiiiiiiit great video!
Yeah yeah of course!! I follow the DabRats of course, and I like to watch Bouldering Bobat sometimes as well (especially when they have Xian climb! She rocks!) I also think rockentry is really underrated; he deserves way more subs for all the work he puts into his channel. Paul Robinson is sick as well as the mellow crew (but they're way too strong sometimes!!) Thanks so much for the support, cheers :-)
I'm struggling to become a better climber while also taking courses to try to get into a neuroscience program. These RUclips algorithms are getting scary lol. I know I'm late to this video but I just discovered your channel. Great content!
I KNOW such a classic choice, can't beat a good DH5-alpha cell... Also, my boyfriend's advisor is working in San Diego where they're doing that minimal genome project. So maybe my new answer would be the one bacterial cell that they injected synthetic DNA into and "created life" or something
I felt what you said about the tunnel vision. I got into a tunnel vision a week ago, fell uncontrolled and managed to injure my spine. I’m always aware of falling but wasn’t in that moment. And let me tell you, it sucked 😂
I bought a pair of E9 climbing pants (pretty), but half a year later they allready start to tear. Which is a bit sad for 100+ dollar pants. So I bought some 20 dollar martial arts pants which give you just as much freedom of movement as the climber pants and are a lot sturdier. Not looking back.
In regards to gym climbing. Being probably the tallest climber in most gyms here in socal at 6'1" i find myself wishing that i was shorter. For those who are tall you know why and would probably agree. Ill of course end my comment however in a positive note though in saying that my height has actually helped me develop excellent climbing technique, and no lol its not the ability to reach. awesome video! p.s this wasn't a negative response to the video, just felt i needed to mention tall people struggle too.
Oh, absolutely! I've been able to cruise through problems that my taller friends have a much harder time completing. A lot of the issues for them come down to weird body positions and compressions, which isn't that much of a problem for shorter people sometimes! Definitely agree :-)
😭This actually made my day because I saw Mitski perform around 2 years ago and it was the first time I saw someone who looked exactly like me sing about issues surrounding biracial identity and DANG I love Mitski so much
hey!! i've heard of sam harris but only in the context of his meditation app, "waking up with sam harris". he does more neuropsychology, whereas i do more molecular/chemical stuff! both super important but equally cool sides of neuroscience :-)
ahh that's so great that you and your wife climb together! thank you so much for the support, glad that this lil channel could be of some use to y'all :~)
Jain Kim is a fantastic example of a pro climber that's short. Also Miho Nonaka and Alex Puccio are both about 5'2". Tiny ladies doing insanely strong moves. Jain Kim also has the luxury of a VERY small BMI as she's only like 90 pounds or something. Some climbers are really lucky with genetics ;-;
had no idea alex puccio was that short! these ladies have such EXCELLENT posture... also yes the strength to weight ratio is probably incredible in all of these climbers (but they're also just plain strong!!)
@@JenniferLangen Absolutely. Alex Puccio is widely regarded as one of, if not the best, boulderers in the world. She's an absolute BEAST of a woman. I'm trying to get my BMI down for climbing but it's a struggle. It's not so much losing fat weight for me as it is refining what muscle I got. We'll see haha
A swimmer into a climber - one of the best transition existing. The better maybe only a gymnast into a climber. Funny enough I came to climbing after teaching myself how to do distant swimming. P.S. Your ape index is great, and all the raptor like climbers with negative ape index (myself including) envy you! :-)
Arina Thomsen The swimming to climbing transition was amazing!! Such similar muscle groups are involved. And haha oops, guess I should be a little more grateful 😅
Low ape index also means you're less injury prone in your shoulders and elbows and have a better leverage for pulling strength, so it's not all bad. Maybe get some one-arm pull-up game going like Sofya /watch?v=agDx4ogdi5c She's a beast :D
New people are really welcome at the gym for sure! Everyone starts somewhere and there's 0 shame/ seniority when it comes to being on the wall. If that V1 is intermingled with that V8 the V8 doesn't get dibs. I will say however, proper gym etiquette is important for everyone to follow V0-V11+. The only time I've ever seen/ been annoyed at someone new is when they aren't paying attention to where they are walking (walking under someone on an overhang for example so both they and the climber would be injured) or not letting someone work in (just like the V8 doesn't have dibs, neither does the V1).
For sure!! Totally agree. I also feel like if there are intermingled problems, just being aware of whether you're "hogging" the problem is also a cool thing to do. People should take as much time as they need to complete a problem, but running laps and hanging around the same problem without taking a rest (when other people are waiting) is kinda not cool... TOTALLY agree with the dibs thing. There isn't a hierarchy to who gets access to the wall!!
HAVE I SAID on this channel... that i actually SAW HIM in red rocks?? I was packing up my things and saw him walking up to the crag... He was emanating this aura, so strong, I wish I worked up the courage to say hello!
@@JenniferLangen I'm new to your channel! I might have missed it :/ but i'm catching up! I mean the guy is more than just a badass free soloing rock climber. I think i would've reacted the same way honestly haha. He has definitely been a big inspo of mine.
I always thought that someone's armspan was equal to their height. I just found out because of this video my armspan is 3 inches longer than I am tall :o

YES I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS!! The neuroscience and fashion-y videos :-) I've come a long way but still have a ways to go. Thanks for sticking around even as the channel changes
5'7'' isn't that short to be a climber. I believe Shauna Coxsey is around that height and she has no problem at all. i feel like being shorter actually helps, because you can't rely on your height, you need to develop technique and think outside the box all the time. Which tall people do less because they reach the holds more easily, so it's in the harder grades that they are confronted by lack of technique/movement. peace
Also a great example of a climber with a more static style, and a unique one at that. She is immensly strong, slowly reaching for holds others of her length wouldn't normally get to, and she reads problems well too. I'm extatic she's doing well in this years bouldering season so far, I love her style.
Yeah I'm a 165cm (5'4) climber and even though it's a bit annoying when sometimes people can just skip the hard parts with their reach, being short definitely has a lot of benefits as well: (1) Shorter limbs mean you have better levers therefore you're stronger (relative to body weight) in many ways and have less strain on your tendons and ligaments when e.g. full crimping; (2) You can match holds other people can't, and you can often even fit more fingers into pockets than intended, like I'm often able to put 3 where others can only put 2 and sometimes even 2 in monos, and I can often pinch holds really hard that are not wide enough to be really pinched by others and (3) you can fit into small spaces and get really scrunched up. I think when you're climbing below V5 height is more of an advantage and after that it starts getting more equal, but at the end of the day it really depends on the individual problem, some are more suited for taller climbers and some for shorter climbers.
Lol yeah I really shouldn't ever say that I'm too short to climb, although sometimes I get annoyed when a hold is just out of reach :-) It probably just means I have to work on my technique more. I love Shauna's style! She's incredibly strong
@@JenniferLangen No it's nothing personal haha I just feel like it's a "good excuse" for a lot of climbers, when we could focusing on technique or strength ;)
I've noticed, from my previous home gym, that a lot of the climbers in the gym were scientists! So cool! Do you work with cell lines? I'm also a lab technician. I work in a genetics-centered marine biology lab out in HI :)
there are SO MANY scientists and engineers in the gyms here! i guess it's because they like the problem solving :-) i actually don't work with cell lines, i work with drosophila as a model system and do a lot of dissections/electrophysiology! and ahhh that's so cool!! i have a climber friend who works on Catalina (island off CA coast) and studies evolutionary genetics & ecology! he works with "Mediterranean Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) family lines to investigate the phenomenon of viability Quantitative Trail Loci (vQTLs) that appear during the plankton-to-sessile transition in the mussel life cycle"
Right?! Many climbers are in some STEM-related field. Saw TBS in your lab fridge so assumed cell lines. That's AMAZING that you have the fine motor skills to work with drosophila in that manner. WOW! :) What are you studying? I'm using genetics to answer some questions about black coral across the Hawaiian Archipelago (delimiting species & population genetics). Your friend's project sounds intriguing :)
Leah Shizuru AHHH your work sounds so cool!! coral have to be one of the coolest animals (/colonies? bc the polyps are the animals? v rusty on this) on the planet, i’m so enchanted by how they work together but ALSO very bummed out by how they’re reacting to our changing oceans :-(( ahh yes my tbs is just for washing my westerns :-) i use drosophila to study synapse dynamics like endocytosis and synapse remodeling !! v interesting stuff :-)
haha gosh, I totally forgot what TBS was used for! yikes! I haven't done a western blot in a loooong time. You know a lot about the marine world! I'm still learning as I go because I actually majored in microbio and did biomedical research during my undergrad. Coconut Island (HIMB) is absolutely beautiful- if you're ever in HI, come visit :) Your work sounds fascinating and so very intricate! I'd be interested to read anything in the future if you publish :) I subscribed months ago because I liked the artsy-ness of your climbing videos, but definitely staying to support a fellow science lover :)
Leah Shizuru Ahhh I would love to visit sometime soon!! And oooh yeah I’ll see whether or not I can get ya those papers once they’re published (WHENEVER that is, which could be ages) eeeee thank you so so much for the support ❤️❤️ and yay for bridging the artsy with the science!! :-))

@@JenniferLangen No it's nothing personal haha I just feel like it's a "good excuse" for a lot of climbers, when we could focusing on technique or strength ;)
thank you !
Amazingly chill vid
Thanks so much! :~)
eau = oh, apart from that you were pretty much spot on
Phew, I was worried that people would cook me in the comments for that. And that makes sense, kind of like the "eau" in "beau"
@@JenniferLangen if with "beau"you mean the french word for beautiful, then exactly. if not then I have never heard that word.
Black bear!
Black bears are sweet, I feel like in my heart I want to believe that they're super friendly and just wanna eat honey all day LOL but I know that's super misguided. I was just talking about bears earlier and how they like to hang out in my neighborhood and swim in the pools. Super cute!! Love them!!
great video as always! I go to Font every year and its totally worth the trip. I'm a massive an of sports climbing and think it would make some really informative videos as very few people try it who aren't already amazing. good luck!
Thanks so much! So jealous that you get to go to Font. And good point, I actually have never taken a class on sport climbing before, and was wondering whether maybe I could take a class where they'd let me film. Probably not lol. But in the future I'd love to make some beginner sport climbing videos! :-)
@@JenniferLangen I'm sure someone would let you! cant wait for them :)
dat AIYAH tho
I aiyah when I fall from the top of the slab always
