"Remember if you die in the Avatar state, you die in real life." I'm glad he corrected himself afterward, but that still made me laugh.

I say this all the time, but I believe that Aang misunderstood what the Guru was saying. Notice how he said you must “learn” to let her go. In other words, he is saying learning to let go is an important virtue. Not learning to let go is what contributes to things like hatred or bitterness or desperation.
If Katara died for example, if Aang isn’t able to let go, it could be mentally unhealthy. If Katara decided to turn on him (hypothetically), if Aang is too obsessed, he can be easily manipulated or used and abused.
Think of abusive relationships for example, those who are abused have difficulty leaving the abuser because of trouble letting go of them. They are still emotionally attached and as such, are easier to manipulate.
The guru is just trying to let Aang master the idea of letting go so that if something were to happen in the future, Aang wouldn’t perform acts of desperation, obsession or insanity.
Ironically too, notice how Zuko was obsessed with finding the avatar because he believed it would restore his honor and earn his dad’s love again. It was only until he realized that he CAN let go of his abusive father’s approval, and he CAN let go of their twisted idea of honor; only then would he find happiness in the father who truly loved him (Iroh).
This is why “letting go” was part of the morals taught by the chakras. It is telling you to develop a healthy mindset where you can love and care for someone, while also understanding that if anything were to happen to that loved one, or those loved ones might betray you, then you wouldn’t be so devastated that you would either break mentally, become obsessed or harbour hatred and bitterness in your heart.
The guru wasn’t trying to tell Aang to be an emotionless person, lacking the capacity to love. He was trying to help him to learn the skill of letting go when THE TIME COMES to let go. Of course, it is easier said than done, but learning to accept that humans are flawed and make mistakes and are mortal, is the key to looking at people for their genuine selves and not your glorified idea of who you think they are.

I also think that as a spiritual brother to the air nomads, Guru Pathik had a specific perspective based on air nomad ideals for approaching the Avatar state that is not necessarily the only way. We know of another character who believes that some air nomad ideals do not align with what the Avatar represents, and based on their perspective, an argument could be made for attachment being a necessary part of being the Avatar.

@@bradstrife2211 Oh yeah, there is that as well. It was Avatar Yangchen who said that the avatars duty is TO the world, not to be detached from it, like the monks state. It is true that the Guru’s method would not be the only method. After all, you can’t tell me that EVERY previous avatar mastered the state the exact same way.
There was no Guru training for Avatar Wan and Avatar Korra for an example. The more spiritually in tune they are, the more likely they were to master the state. The guru’s training would have been another method of becoming more spiritually in tune. It doesn’t make it the ONLY way to do so.
      Great point, man. 😁👍

This 2 parter really shows just how brilliant and psychologically tactical Azula is in turning the Dai Li against Long Feng and pushing just the right buttons to get in Zuko's head, unraveling his redemption arc and swaying him over to her side

"Crossroads of Destiny" is my favorite season finale, although maybe I'm biased cause book 2 is my favorite season. But yeah, to wait like eight months for book 3 was painful. At least here in México, I remember Nickelodeon made "marathons" with the first two seasons, the whole weekend starting 7 am, and it was great, so that made the waiting less terrible.

Azula is so brilliant and diabolicaly evil. She is easily one of my all time favorite characters.
When it comes to Zuko, I wasn't the slightest bit surprised when he allied with Azula. You could tell leading up to this that the way he's been acting since recovering from his fever wasn't natural, it came across as very forced and fake. Zuko's has been trying to get his families love and acceptance for a few years now ever since he got banished. There's no way Zuko would undergo that drastic of a change that quickly.

I think the final push was when Iroh said “look deep inside and see what you truly want”. What Zuko TRULY wants it to go home and see his father.

Loved the analysis on aang's decisision to master the avatar state. Lots of ppl fail to understand that even though the show doesn't treat children (their target audience) as idiots sometiems they do definitely dumb things down for them to understand. The attachment thing is a lot more nuanced than they present it and it's one of the things that confuses people later on the finale when a certain something happens. You put my thouhts into words perfectly as I've always thought the same way because aang definitely still loves katara but you can still see that its not the end-all-be-all he still understands his responsibility. And when the finale rolls around i have another point that this will come back to.
