That laughter in between the answers; its the generosity of a man who knows the answers cannot be found by way of discursive thought but humors the student all the same. "The truth my son, is what you may* find doing zazen until your pate shines like mine! . . . that and what you become"
One common occurnace with all the videos I watch of enlightened people is how they all find the questions people ask them funny. I think once you see beyond all the questions in your head and it "clicks" you find how most people think amusing lol I've had times where I've had an "ahhh" moment and just laughed out loud, weird!
I think they also may chuckle as a pause while trying to find the right words to describe some ideas that aren't easily expressed in everyday English. Like if someone talks about being and non-being or no-self, it sounds funny or even nonsensical to a person who hasn't been exposed to the true meaning of ideas like this, so you have to take care how you explain these ideas.
I had to watch it again, was so lost laughing and smiling seeing your teacher's expressions and face,it was so soothing, I lost track of what he was saying.
I commented on this video before, but I just can't get over how cool a dude mr Jinen is. Just watching this makes me smile. I wish I could one day be only half, or even one tenth as cool as him. Please tell mr Jinen I said hi :)
@Liam Greene Wow, Liam, I never thought of it that way. We can actually apply this to everything. So, everything has a name but what is IT, exactly? What is the meaning of IT? What is the function of IT? We can even apply this to Life itself? Very interesting. Thank you.
Truth. Realisation. Meditation...how easily the nervous mind becomes fascinated by conceptualisations. When you sit...just sit. When you walk...just walk. When you sleep...just sleep.
Laugh is because the Truth is so simple even child can understand that(or only child does), and seriousness is coz this simple Truth if missed can cause havocs in people's life.
Ultimate truths and the concept are deep understanding. Ones need good wisdom and training to understand it. Without proper training and wisdom, ultimate truth becomes only intellectual knowledge. The master knows. He laughs. Thank you for sharing.
There is no objects in space only space and its extensions. 😍😍 loving the empty fullness that births this and that ,at every moment of this fractal kaleidoscopic enfoldment of probability, all with in duality is relativity
The real monk don't only take his Ego and suffering off, but when he did that, he takes the suffering of the humankind on his shoulder as much as possible. He sorrows with many tears for them. That's real love and that's fearlessness to suffering.
maybe it's just what i want to see, but zen masters always seem so humble. it's refreshing to me coming from a culture where everyone is trying to prove others wrong and exalt themselves... thank you for these videos! one thing though, could you add subtitles to these videos? there's so much background noise, it's hard for me to hear his words.
"This Is It!" . . "This Is It!" . . "This Is It!" -- Repeat those words to yourself while under the influence of a small dose of El Cid. That's what did it for me way back in 1971. Now I use "This is it" as my mantra when I meditate (the English words that come closest to the Taoists' description, "That which can't be named").
Western mind or westerners - the source of all problems in today's world and the key to the solution for all our problems in modern world is also with the Western mind. Hope that leads us int he right path.
There was a Buddhist monk in a documentary about Japanese music who made mention of what he called "the one sound." Mind you, though I practice meditation, I am never-the-less an armature scholar. My interpretation was that he meant every possible noise (all sound is a vibration) that occurs within any given moment. 'Music of the hear and now,' if you will. ^^
He's saying that there is the concept of truth and the actual truth and also perception of the truth through each of us. Like perfection is infinite and cannot be boxed in and grasp. He is saying truth cannot be spoken or written. It is expressed in feelings and action, which are both infinite or like water, flowing but like us, aspiring.
I’ll try to explain what he means, something I understood suddenly. The separation he is talking about is our necessary “putting in the box” stuff we do to analyze and to explain things. Life, what is life, we separate it from the environment and we describe it as an external being observing in “in a box”. That’s ok, everything is based on that. We do science in that way, we transfer informations to others in that way. The problem is that you end up analyzing “something” out of context. You can’t describe something when there is no separation. For example, your body, emits infrared rays but we don’t think about them when we described ourselves or thinking to others, we kinda separate informations between useful informations to useless informations for the purpose we decided. But wait, we decided the purpose then, that means that we can describe things deciding the “wall of the box” but if that is true, there is no ultimate truth until you remove those walls, because (as he says) everything is just one thing, all connected and all one. The truth in concept is some statement or concept we created observing the object in the box The truth without concept is just that, you can’t explain it, you can’t describe it, you can only face it, with your limited perception ofc and limited senses, then you realize that if everything is all interconnected, you and the thing you are watching are the same thing, you change it and it changes you. The atoms are all close together, some loose some tight but it’s all big chunk of matter. The universe is all one. That’s why zen is unexplainable, that’s why is not meditation, because meditation is already a concept for some activity that have already been “boxed”, you can’t say zen is the observation of reality because “observing”, “reality” are all concepts that are already been boxed, even the word “zen” is a boxed concept. You must face it with no concepts, and you have to be careful because also this statement is a “boxed” concept itself. Then you realize the meaning of “wu” Just pure mental silence (see how those words giving you some sort of emotions? Those are boxed concepts) Wash all away, observe the observer, shorten the way, let your mind see itself. (Concepts, concepts concepts again) (I don’t know if gave you the idea, it’s hard to explain with concepts the inexplicable “out of concepts” concept)
Oh man, I wish I could make friend like this who has sacrificed it all for wisdom. What I am saying, and I can be nicer, is that I wish there was a way he could deliver what he knows in a form that we could digest better. What he has said in this video was really incomprehension. And it's funny that everyone commenting "wow" "ahh" have no idea what he just said either, they just think it was deep and moving because they know he is a wise man. #respect.
"This" can not be learned anywhere because its in you! Ask the question "who am I" find the real "I" in you! That's Buddha in there. And that's not the end of the story, after that you will see that "I" in everyone as well. So that "self" is the only self that exists. You may call it Buddha nature, God, source... that is the only real thing that exists. that's the TRUTH🤗🙏
Where does this beautiful man lives? Is there a way of contacting or seeing him? Does he has any commune or disciples? TibetKanagawa, please reply and why so few asked about that?
I know all that, I fully agree with you!!! I just wanted to put a side note on the 'all concepts ar wrong' generalization. People read this and get confused on these notes. I think. :-) But your last note is much clearer on that...
So it seems a doing, directing awareness to the center, finding out where thoughts originate. But this whole thing you describe is all based on thought, 'planning to see it, planning to get better after seeing it (whatever, source), getting to be a better person, being able to help more in the world'.
Wonderful person. So, if I understand it right (and I heard it several times before), sitting without thinking is a key point of the art. But this is the real difficulty, isn't it. And what really troubles me is the question how shall one do this, stop thinking. Is there a method which teaches you how to stop thinking? But if there would be a method, than there would be a concept and the whole trouble starts again. So, what do I have to do to learn to sit without thinking? And please, don't answere "just sit" because than, I fear, the trouble never ends.
A zen philosophy once entered my head.. his name was taisen deshimaru, his two books were edited by philippe coupey, the names were, sit, and The VOICE of the VALLEY
The problem is not what you "get" - as 69torus has pointed out - but that we are unaware that we have reduced our reality to mere thought, and self-centered thought, at that. We simply are not aware of it until, by simply sitting and abandoning those otherwise useful tools of coneptualization, we realize what we have not been aware of.
@amn3h23h2 Good observation. This is because a zen master is able to guage where others are at, sees their progress upon the path they are following, and encourages them to make progress for themselves. A zen master understands that nobody began life as a zen master. :)
El-Branden Brazil Can i ask you something, please? My dad is a Zen Master, and he really need to send this video with portuguese subtitles for his students, so can you post the same video with portuguese subtitles, please?

His laughter, gestures and eyes answer the question. Beautiful.
he's hilarious
He didn't answer anything because there was no question🙏
That laughter in between the answers; its the generosity of a man who knows the answers cannot be found by way of discursive thought but humors the student all the same. "The truth my son, is what you may* find doing zazen until your pate shines like mine! . . . that and what you become"
truth is giving free chuckles from time to time :)
From his laughter we all can know how living in simplicity can let us realize something far more greater
Jinen-san was about 64 in this video. He's a dear friend and it is an honour and a pleasure to spend time with him.
Thank you for this beautiful and inspiring video. Wonderful and clear teaching.

They are also fully compassionate
I think they see the irony of it all
I had to watch it again, was so lost laughing and smiling seeing your teacher's expressions and face,it was so soothing, I lost track of what he was saying.
Thanks for upload this really really good video !! You are so lucky to have this teacher.
Master Jinen is very natural. He is a very good example.
He is, indeed. It is a joy to spend time with him. He is a genuinely lovely man and the result of many years of dedicated Zen practice.
Wonderful exchange. I don't tire of viewing it over time. :-)
And that's the truth, which is beyond the concept of word truth! 🙏
I commented on this video before, but I just can't get over how cool a dude mr Jinen is. Just watching this makes me smile.

hvala, majstore, ala si me opravio - svaka ti cast!
When you want what you need you don't want anymore what you don't need.
You should have turned off the fan to allow the truth to flow.
the Truth is flowing through the fan.

No! without a fan there is no truth!
Fan makes the wind of truth to flow!
Without a fan the truth would be too hot to handle.
In its interconnectedness, the running fan is part & parcel of the TRUTH at the ever-present-now.
( So why need to turn it off ?)
Truth. Realisation. Meditation...how easily the nervous mind becomes fascinated by conceptualisations. When you sit...just sit. When you walk...just walk. When you sleep...just sleep.

@mazhpereira If you are interested, I would be happy to put you in contact with Master Jinen.
Why is finding realization so difficult?
Because you are looking for it.
That makes sense that it is his second language. It is not criticism, it is discussion. Thanks for the comment.
Yes. This is why he is always smiling.

Wonderful person. So, if I understand it right (and I heard it several times before), sitting without thinking is a key point of the art. But this is the real difficulty, isn't it. Truth is beyond compassion beyond reality beyond fact beyond zazen
@PeesheePeeshee You are most welcome.
Zen is so hard to explain/grasp because its something that has to be understood without thoughts. Your mind distracts you from it.
